[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Help with translation and identification
Lexi/Marilyn, That's what George said...the men's entrance was because of the liquor. You never know with pictures. I had one that I took around for a few years. I was helping a man at my FHC in Los Angeles on his Portuguese lines. We never found a connection (yet). He asked me to come over around Christmas and meet his parents from RI. I came with old photos. His father identified some of the people in the photo! [AZORES-Genealogy] Vila Franca do Campo visit
Cheri and others, I'm hoping that perhaps you can provide some advice to us regarding our upcoming visit to Vila Franca do Campo in about one month. We hope to locate relatives there but do not have much information to go on, other than the fact the family could be from the St. Michael's parish. When the family emigrated in 1904, the eldest daughter stayed behind. We know her name, that she was a teacher, and that when her younger sister visited her many years later she reportedly still lived in VF and had a houseful of children and grandchildren. Our living cousins here in the US have scoured their family records trying to help us find more information without success. We know that she as born pre-1892. While we've searched LDS films for her parents vitals, we don't know any of hers. We've struck out on the parents as well, and are thinking that they could have been baptized and married at another parish even thought their passport records id this as their parish. We also have some family photos, but none that include this eldest daughter. Still we hope they might be useful, and have made reprints to use when we are there. Other than simply walking around and asking town residents, I wonder if you have any advice for us. We have also timed our visited to coincide with the annual parish festa, in hopes that this could afford additional opportunities for us. We hope that if we can find her decedents, perhaps they can lead us to more information about the parents. Any advice at all would be appreciated. Hi John, Rick listed that his FHC has films for Ribeirinha on Sao Miguel island (there's more than one Ribeirinha in the Azores). What site are you trying to get your mother-in-law's birth from? What year was she born? I think the Filiacao means who are her parents, but I'd have to see the site to be sure. [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Vila Franca do Campo visit
Marcia, If this woman was born pre-1892, you would have to go to the archive in Ponta Delgada and search the baptisms for Vila Franca - Sao Miguel Arcanjo, requesting the years 1882-1892. You will have to hunt for her looking at every baby born with her first name, checking to see if the parents are the right ones. However, a few of the books do have an index in the back, so I'd look back there first to see if an index exists. I'd continue back in time, collecting all the siblings until I go for a few years with no children. If the records state that all the babies were legitimate, I'd go to the marriage book and start look for the parents marriage, beginning with the day before the first born's birth. The marriages will be easier to search, as they will list the bride and groom in the margin or at the top (for that time period). I think SMA was filmed to about 1883, so I'd trace the records back to at least then. That way, when you get home, you can order the film and continue searching back in time. I'd go to the praca (town square) and find an old timer and ask him if he recognizes the photo. He may have you ask someone else. I've had people able to identify my relatives that way. Also, at the festa there will be many people to ask too, so that would be a good idea. Hi Steven, Just for practice, start to read the dates on each baptism (as they are in chronological order). It takes time to get used to the dates being spelled out instead of using numbers (they use some numbers in the older records). You'll get used to the months that way too. Get the Portuguese Word list from Family Search: http://tinyurl.com/b2q9zx You'll notice the link at the top that will take you directly to numbers, dates, and time. #4 Antonio 1) On the twenty-five day of the month of May (that was in the fold and I don't have my reading glasses, so I just checked record # 5; remember, this top line is the baptism date) 2) of the year of one thousand eight hundred seventy three in this 3) church parish of Nossa Senhora das Milgres of Lagedo 4) council of Vila das Lajes diocese of Angra 5) I baptize solemnly an individual of the sex 6) masculine to whom I gave the name Antonio and that 7) he was born in this freguesia at five hours of the morning 8) on the same day, month and year son legitimate first 9) of the name of Jose Coelho Ramos worker and Puliceca (don't trust my spelling on that) 10) de Jesus occupation of the service of her house native received (married) 11) parishioners and living in this freguesia grandson pa- 12) ternal of Jose Coelho Ramos and Izabel Maria, mater- 13) nal of Francisco de Frietas and Roza de Sao Jose, for god- 14) father Antonio Maria Henriques single stu- 15) dent and Godmother Maria dos Anjos single of 16) whom have the proper papers blah blah blah (church stuff) Yep, less vinho this time! Another thing that is confusing when you start out...they write like this: Thequ ick brown fox ju mpedov er the lazy dog. [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Films in Exeter NH FHC
Hello John, The films in the FHC for Ribeirinha, Ribeira Grande only go to the year 1883. That was all they could film up to because of the 100 year rule (they were filmed in 1983-5). I have not tried the site so I am not familiar with it but in order to get your names to the records prior to 1883 you will have to request the record of birth or marriage as needed to get to names that could be looked up in the filmed records. When you do get the names let me know as I already have many on my data base. The home is that of my Ggrandmother Francisca Rosa Lemos, born around 1869. I have no idea which village this is and hope that someone on the list might recognize the church in the background. Re : [AZORES-Genealogy] Madeira Archives Online
Hi Cherri, Do you, please, know if there is any site for Azores passports online? Thank you. Since this list focuses on the Azores, I don't have much for Madeira. George had the URL below for them since he's a researcher for hire and knows all this stuff. http://www.arquivo-madeira.org/homepage.php They are the Archive Regional of Madeira (ARM). In the upper right, they have a translation to English. They too are a work in progress. They have baptisms, marriage, and the passports online. It looks like you have to search by modern Portuguese spelling (Melo, not Mello) and probably have to use the diacritics (accented letters). -- Cheri Mello Listowner, Azores-Gen Researching: Vila Franca, Ponta Garca, Ribeira Quente, R. das Tainhas, Achada --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ To unsubscribe from this group, send email to azores-unsubscr...@googlegroups.com. Hi Listers I have copies of Angra Passports Aug 1836 thru Dec 1839 only. Rosemarie - Original Message - From: Cheri Mello To: Azores@googlegroups.com Sent: Friday, April 10, 2009 4:06 PM Subject: Re: Re : [AZORES-Genealogy] Madeira Archives Online Natalia, The Center for Knowledge of the Azores (Centro de Conhecimento dos Acores) or CCA has SOME of them online here: http://pg.azores.gov.pt/drac/cca/ig/ Only the port of Ponta Delgada is online (1875-1939 with gaps). The port of Angra used to be online when they had the old URL. Rosemarie Capodicci copied them and will do a look up for you. I don't know how many she copied or what years they cover (she may have said at one time). She's on this list, but you can also email her direct at rcapodc at redshift dot com The port of Horta has never been online. The CCA site is a work in progress. It will take quite awhile for them to get everything online. [AZORES-Genealogy] Family Last Names
Hello All, I have done a fair amount of my family tree, and I notice that from generation to generation some were given the same last name while others were not. I am assuming that it was not always common practice to give the children the same last name as the father, but were would they get the other name from? [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Does anyone know this village?
When Arline and I were in Rosais in 2006, talking to anyone who would stop to talk, we met a man with the surname of Sequeira. Since that is my son-in-law's paternal great-grandfather's name, we had a conversation and he said he had an old picture of the church. We took the picture to Velas, had a copy made, and returned the original to him. During our conversation, he told us about the church being rebuilt with the steeple put on the other side. I don't remember what year that took place, maybe Arline does. [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Family Last Names
Jessica, As Elaine said, the rule is that there is no rule! Pretty frustrating. However, there are some vague generalities. I did a mini-survey a few years ago. I asked people to look up their ancestors in a specific time period and to tell me which line their surname came from. A majority did come from either the father's or the mother's line with any of the grandparents coming in second. Although no one responded with a surname from a godparent, I am told this also happens. [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Family Last Names
My guess is that sometimes the family was so poor, they would use the godparent's name if the godparent owned a tree in someone else's plot of land. I think if I were in the same situation I would want to give my child the best chance to own that tree some time in the future. [AZORES-Genealogy] Rosais, Sao Jorge
I have some pictures from my 2006 trip to Sao Jorge. Because I like to have a photograph of the church, baptismal font and altars where my ancestors were baptized, married, etc. I have some from Rosais. A few years ago, I took a picture of a font thinking it was the font where the ancestor had been baptized. When I returned to the same church to talk to the priest, I happened to mention that the font looked newer than those I had seen in other churches. He told me is had been replaced after some problem occurred. I asked where the old font was and was told it was attached to the wall in the back room and used for the priests to wash his hands. I now have a picture of the old font where my husband's ancestor was baptized. Since that, I always ask about the age of the fonts. In Rosais, the old font (the largest I have seen so far) is in a park and used as a bird bath. I have a picture of that font too. I don't know how long it will take me to scan the pictures; however, contact me off list and I will send you the scans as soon as I can.
