2009-06-16 Thread bbffrrpp

Hi Jesse,

I just went to a map of Sao Miguel and was reminded that Nordeste is
almost on the other end of the island from Ponta Delgada (Sao
Roque). So, your Joao PACHECO and my husband's Joao PACHECO were
probably not directly related. However, I have been curious whether
families moved from one part of the island to another, and was it
fairly easy to do that by boat?

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Why our Portuguese ancestors moved so often & used

2009-06-16 Thread LHarrah333
I've come to the realization that It is extremely difficult tracing family
(duh!). My family came from Capelo, Faial. My dad came from a family of
11. On entering the US, half came with the name Rose (da Rosa). The other
half came with the name of da Silva or just Silva. One uncle in RI
changed his last name to Silvia. My paternal grandfather's name was actually
Jose Silveira as I understand it.My paternal grandmother's maiden name was
Maria Brum but she was mostly known as Maria de Jesus. She was married to
Jose Silveira my gfather). All 11 children had the middle name of Correia (I
don't know where that came from; I'm thinking that might have been an
important descendant. One aunt married a first cousin who's name was
Francisco
Brum. My uncle Manuel married a first cousin, Theresa. This goes on and
on.

On my mother's side, her maiden name was Andrade and her middle name was
Cunha. So where did the Cunha come from? A couple of years ago I had a
cousin in Faial attempt to get records in Horta on my mother's family. Papers
sent to me listed about 5 Filomena Andrade's from Capelo all around the
same time as my mother's existence. I haven't pursued tracing family since
then and I don't know if I will. Maybe on my next trip to Faial. Good
luck to all. I enjoy reading all the e-mails and I'm astonished as to how
many of you have ancestors in common. Interesting. Maybe before I get too
senile I'll work at it. It's just too overwhelming right now.

Hello group,

I hope someone has the answer to these questions. Maybe someone in

I've been having a rough time tracing my family. Slowly but surely I
am finding new information. and can credit that success to being able
to cross reference information found at the UMass Dartmouth Paper. One
of my biggest problems has been the frequency in which they moved and
changed their names. I don't know if others have experienced that or
not or maybe it was just most of my family on the run. LOL A recent
example is a relative named Arsenio Pamplona Corte Real Camara. I've
found him using the names Harrison Cambra, Harrison Camara, the above
name, Arsenio Camara/Cambra and Frank Perry/Pereira. Absolutely
unbelievable!!! You'd think they were living in this day & age and
were afraid of identify theft.

Curiosity is my main reason for the questions but am I to expect this
with most of my Portuguese ancestors? I've definitely found it to be
the case with the moving part but the name changes too???

Thank you for your time.

Michelle

Hi Jesse,

I can just offer an FYI. My (now) husband's great-grandparents were
Joao PACHECO and Jacintha COSTA from the village of Sao Roque on Sao
Miguel. They had a son, Antonio PACHECO, b~1885 there.
Unfortunately, I don't know anything else about the family.

I've posted about this family before, so there is information in the
archives of this Group, and in genealogy Lists, etc.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Manuel P Serpa emigrates from Pico? around 1891

2009-06-16 Thread Kevin Gartner
Hello,

My great-grandfather was apparently Manuel P. Serpa. He was born in about 1873
and emigrated from the Azores in about 1891. He ended up in New Bedford,
Massachusetts. At least he lived there by 1930. His wife was "Mary", at least
that was how she was described in 1930, and he had two sons, Joseph and Manuel
A. Serpa. The latter was my grandfather, and a good guy he was, too.

Anyone know of either Manual P. or his wife, Mary?

Be sure to read the link from Dick's blog to the Kansas City Star. Sounds
like the FOIA form G-639 will no longer be required. There currently is no
index and it sounds like you have to search there yourself (unless you know
a researcher in that area). Note the 100 year rule (it's 2009 so the
person's DOB needs to be 1909 or earlier) and new ones will be released in

Kevin,

If you think they married in New Bedford, you need to check St. John the
Baptist church for their marriage. Ask if they will photocopy the entry out
of the book and if not, ask if they will type up everything verbatim (even
if it's in Latin) for you. There's a period of time where they wrote down
the freguesia (village) from where the newlywed came. If they mail you the
paper certificate, it just says the bride married the groom on this date by
the priest with X & Y as witnesses. If it's not at St. John's try Mt.
Carmel (or is it Our Lady of Carmel?)

2009-06-16 Thread Cheri Mello
Iggy,

They are listed on the Azores Genweb:
http://homepage.mac.com/kmacardoza/Genealogy/maps.html
Click on the island (in your case, Sao Miguel) and scroll down to N for
Nordeste. You will see only 1 church listed for Nordeste, called Sao
Jorge. The third column lists the years that the microfilm covers (1563 -
1884).

The 1902 immigration may be his best guess. You'll also have to search 1901
and then 1903 and possibly keep expanding the the years, or try other
American sources to figure out the immigration date. The 1900, 1910, 1920,
and 1930 censuses all ask for the immigration year (a sample of what is
asked on each U.S. Federal Census can be downloaded from Ancestry.com's
Learning Center for FREE: http://www.ancestry.com/trees/charts/census.aspx)

For other ideas on tracing your immigrant, check out the Azores Genweb here:

Funny in one place it says that the G-639 isn't needed and on the G-639 they
have you do it. Maybe by mail you need the G-639 otherwise, you can search
for them in person there (once it's all set up). The KC Star says the

HI Rosemarie,

That tinyURL didn't work.

I think I'd wait until the records were settled in MO. Just in case they
lost my request in the move.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Searching Agua de Pau for Correia, Pacheco, TAvares,

2009-06-16 Thread CaraBela
You mentioned you found a grave in New Bedford with the name Tavares on it.
My family has a Tavares family plot in St. John's Cemetery in New Bedford.
It is a long flat marker that just says "Tavares." There are quite a few
family members buried under there. My great, great grandparents Guilherme
(William) Tavares & Augusta Botelho Neves Tavares are there. Augusta's
mother, Jacintha Botelho da Silva is also there. My great grandparents are
there, Oscar Horta Pacheco & Maria (Mary) Joanna Tavares Pacheco. Mathilda
Tavares & her 4 children are all there also. Virginio Perriera (Gene Perry) is
there also. He was my great-aunt's second husband. Edna Pacheco Perry & her
sister, my grandmother Bertha Pacheco Rose will be buried there also when
they die.

A lot of people are there & just the name Tavares. It took a very long
time to get the names of all who are buried there. My great-aunt, Edna went
there years ago & got into an argument with the lady at the office for the
cemetery. Edna still pays for the family plot & she wanted to know who all
was in there because she wanted to know who she was going to be buried with
someday. They lady wasn't very nice & my sweet little Aunt finally wore her
down & got her to make a copy of the one card that had all the information.
We were surprised so many were there.

Our Tavares line only said they were from Ponta Delgada. That is all they
would say. I did find on a passenger list that had my great, great
grandmother & her two daughters, that the girls were listed as being born in
Relva &
it said "Matriz" for my gg grandmother's birthplace. I have been told that
"Matriz" means Mother Church. I haven't looked into this line any further.
I have been working on another line in Graciosa for quite a while.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Manuel P Serpa emigrates from Pico? around 1891

2009-06-16 Thread Michelle
Hello Kevin,

I don't know if you have a membership with Ancestry or with New England
Historical Society but this is what I found. If you already have this
information I apologize for the duplication but if you don't...enjoy and best
of luck in your search. I hope some of it helps.

Jose P. Serpa was born 6/30/1904 in New Bedford. Parents shown as Manuel P.
Serpa & Maria Conceicao. Manuel was a Mill Operative at the time and again he
was born in Pico, AZ and she was born in Terceira, AZ. Vol: 542 ; Page: 305

Their marriage record: Married 8/8/1903...NEHGS shows his name as Manoel
Pereira Serpa & her's as Maria da Consolacao. He was 31 and she was 26 years
old...first marriage for both. Again, he was born Pico and she was born
Terceira. His parents names were Jose Pereira Serpa & Maria Isabel Victorina.
Her parents names were Manoel Antonio & Maria do Rosario. Vol 536, Page 287

In 1908, 1909, 1913, 1917 Manuel, Maria & family were living at 252 Hillman and
using the name Manuel P. Serpa according to the directories.

Their 1920 Census says they are living at 252 Hillman Street. Mary's abt is
1878. Immigration for him 1891 for her 1895.

In the 1930 Census they are still living at 252 Hillman Street. The boys are
not shown living with them. The main page on Ancestry messed up on the front
page stating they were from Ireland. It was actually the people above them in
the census that were from Ireland. It states they owned the home. This record
shows him immigrating in 1894 & her in 1895.

I did find a ship manifest for June 22, 1896 for a Maria Conceicao coming from
Terceira going to Taunton, MA but it's one of those records that doesn't have a
lot of information. It has her age at 16 years old. I also found a death record
for a Mary Serpa that was born July 4, 1880 and died October 17, 1970 in
Taunton, MA.

In 1932 & 1937 there is a Manuel A. Serpa, Milkman (Jeanne C. Briene) living at
319 Park. I do not see a Joseph listed but the 1932 directory does say that
Manuel P. Serpa died January 29, 1932 and that Mary C was still living at 252
Hillman. She was also still at this address in from 1937-1955 (no other
directories to reference after that). In 1943-1955 Manuel A & his wife are now
shown living at 105 Newton.

In the UMASS Dartmouth paper I found an article about Manuel A & Jeanne
(Briene) Serpa having a boy that was born April 8, 1935. In his 1930 Census it
looks like he and Jeanne were married in early 1930...she was born in Canada.
It the "C" stands for Choquette then I also found other census records for her
prior to her marrying Manuel but don't know for sure without more information.

In 1940 there are several ads in the Port Paper in September that appear that
he was supporting a George A. Dean for County Commissioner but they show his
name as Manuel A. Serra...his address though matches the directories & 1930
Census record for Manuel A. Serpa.

Well, hope some of it helps and matches some of what you may already know.

Regards,
Michelle

I would love for this to be a connection! The names i have are a bit
different than what you say
but i was writing things down from what my aunts and uncles could
remember. My great great grandfather
was Manuel Sousa Couto who was married to Ana do Jesus Couto (i don't
know how they would have the same last names..) One of their daughters
would have been Maria de Conceicao de Couto (my great grandmother).
The only other info i have of hers is that she was born around the
1880's and she had sisters...Maria de LuzFrancisca...Antonia de
Jesus...and Bernaldina...

To Michelle and Cheri,

I am stunned and pleased by the research and advice I got (and fast!)
to my inquiry about my great-grandfather. You have added a whole
generation to my knowledge, and done so with lots of detail.
Moreover, I know have leads on where to go from there.

By the way, I am a partner in developing and marketing a software
product for genealogy for the Macintosh (the newly released GEDitCOM
II). Though you have helped me with my personal tree, your research
and ideas also help me think of better ways to develop software and
data tools to help others.

Thanks again,
Kevin
