Celeste,

Many years ago while researching in San Benito County for one of my lines I was
told to check all bordering areas of where the family lived.  Why?  Because
just as I may drive to Sacramento, Sutter or Yuba Counties from my county of
Placer to do business, so did our relatives. I live in the country and am
pretty much right in the middle of being able to drive to all these counties
the same distance from my home.  Anyhow, they may have been working in that
area, delivering hay, or whatever and stopped at an office to be naturalized.

Ever since then I keep an open mind on all research to never limit myself to
the immediate area of where my family lived.

BTW, another example, even though we lived in Placer County when our son was in
High School, his school "district" was in another county.  His high school was
closer to our home (besides being in the district), then the high school in the
town in which we live.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: JORGE, SILVEIRA, FURTADO & VA LADÃO families in Fajã Grande, Flores (specifically Ponta)

2010-08-02 Thread Katharine
The paper the letters are written on is delicate, the ink faint, the
penmanship challenging, and the spelling archaic (if not sometimes
just plain wrong). Scanning them would also be very time-consuming,
and my family situation makes in not feasible at this time.

However, the gist of all these letters can be summarized as, "Esteemed
(etc.) aunt, I hope you are well. Please send money."

Sorry not to be able to be of more help right now. Katharine (with an
"A" in the middle).

[AZORES-Genealogy] My experience searching for naturalization papers

2010-08-02 Thread celeste perry
A few years ago,  I was searching for Frank Enos Sousa, (Francisco Ignacio
Sousa) my son-in-law's paternal grandfather.  Frank had lived in Oakland, CA
from before the turn of the century and I had the address of the house where he
lived and where all his children were born.
I spent an entire summer looking at naturalization papers at the Alameda
County office in Oakland.  I did not find it.  Because the family insisted he
had been naturalized, I did not give up.  I was told during my search that a
person could have been naturalized in ANY court; even a traffic court.  That
really made it more difficult for me, I thought only some special court did
that.
I contacted the San Francisco County office (Oakland is just across the bay
from SF).  Of course, there were almost no naturalization papers for the time
period I needed because of the earthquake and fires in 1906 that destroyed all
of them.
I was told there was something called, "The Great Register," which was
really voter registration, by prestinct, for 1890.  I found a copy of The Great
Register at the Oakland Library and began to try to find Frank.  Of course,
there was no way to figure out the number of the prestinct in which he lived.
I went to the voter registration office (in the same building) and asked
what the number would have been for 1890.  I learned that the numbers changed
and there was no way to know what it was in 1890.
During my very agitated conversation with the person at the counter, a woman
overheard me and said I needed to check the, "Erickson Collection."  OK, what
is this collection.  She told me it is the original forms that all voters
signed when they registered to vote.  (Don't get too excited, yet!)  I was also
told that when the forms were going to be destroyed, someone, (I suppose an
Erickson) gathered up the binders and found someplace to send them.
As it turned out, they were sent to California State College in Hayward.
(Now Cal State East Bay).  I made an appt. with the archivist there and saw an
entire wall of binders that contained all of the original voter registration
forms from the beginning of Alameda County until 1920.
I searched for, and found, Frank Enos Sousa had voted 16 times (you had to
fill out a new form each time you voted, I guess).  On one of the forms, Frank
had written not Portugal, not Azores (like he did on 15 of them) but Flores,
Azores.  His place of naturalization was also on that form.  To this day, I
would like to know why someone who lived in Oakland went to SF, (there was no
bridge across the bay in those days).
That was my lead that I followed through the UPEC, which gave me his date of
birth and then to the baptism books that are in the archive in Fayal, Azores.
I have written this very long note to encourage you to keep an open mind
about spelling, places, dates, etc. when you are looking for your ancestors.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Birth Certificate Searches Borba

2010-08-02 Thread eric edgar
Adair,

My ggGrandfather Manuel J Vieira lived in Analy Township, Sonoma county
also. He can be found a few census sheets away from your Borbas on the
1900 census. His naturalzation paper work was filed in Sonoma County court
in 1898.

I spent a day in Santa Rosa at the Library History Center and in the
Sebastapol Library gathering info. The Great Register of Voters list there
only showed birthplace as Portugal. Even the naturalization application only
shows Portugal. A few of the applicants listed Azores or Western Islands,
but no one was specific with island or town.

The clues I spotted were on the 1900 census, that the oldest son Manuel was
born in 1878 in Rhode Island, that the parents were married 24 years in
1900, so in 1876, or four years after
Manuels arrival in 1872.

I'd look for a Rhode Island marriage record from that year.

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] JORGE, SILVEIRA, FURTADO & VA LADÃO families in Fajã Grande, Flores (specifically Ponta)

2010-08-02 Thread Debra Wolgemuth

Katharine and Eric,

My great grandfather was Francisco Jose Jorge (1871 - 1963) and he immigrated
to the US in 1889 settling in Merced in the Buhach Colony. He was the son of
Antonio Jose Jorge and Ana de Jesus. Francisco's daughter, Marie E George
married Edwin W Rodrigues, grandson of Mary Silveira Matos Enos (1883-1978).
The Jorge and Enos famlies were neighbors in the Buhach Colony. Edwin's father
died in the Spanish flu epidemic (abt 1918) and was raised by his grandparents
in Merced.

I knew that the Jorge family was from Faja Grande, Flores from listening to
conversations as a child. From census records, I assumed that Mary Silveira
Matos Enos (1883-1978) and Joseph Enos (1877-1956) immigrated from another
Azores island and not Flores.

I can't read Portuguese, but I'd love to find out what the letters say.

Katherine,

I did a project for a George family in the Fremont Hayward area a few years ago
and was never able to identify the immigrant ancestor. They were from the
Azores and arrived before 1860.

I'd be interested in a scan or copy as I have a dozen or more projects
involving Flores families.

presumably as FRANCISCO JORGE ) and ISABEL THOMAZIA (b. ca. 1854).

In addition, I have over old letters to Isabel in Portuguese from two
nieces and a nephew of hers who stayed behind in Ponta da Fajã Grande:

7 are signed by MARIA MATEUS (or Matheus) SILVEIRA (1913-1938);

8 are signed by ANA FLORIPES (or Floripe or Fluripas) DA SILVEIRA (7
between 1917-1926, plus 1 undated); and,

1 is signed by MANUEL LUÍZ FURTADO (1936).

Additionally, I have an undated letter from JOSÉ ANTÓNIO VALADÃO
(possibly from Flores) and a 1921 letter from ISABEL FURTADO in
Oakland, California.

Does any recognize any of these names?

  Adair,

I spoke with a very nice woman at the Western Sonoma County
Historical Society and she found the following. She said they are buried at a
little cemetery she thought was called Forest Lawn on the corner of Bodega Hwy
but I have a feeling it is Sebastopol Memorial Lawn Cemetery as I cannot find a
Forest Lawn Cemetery. I am not familiar with Sebastopol but she said if you get
to Pleasant Hill you have gone too far. So I have called Sebastopol Memorial
Lawn and waiting for them to call me back with exact dates of death for Jennie
and Manuel.

  Manuel E. Borba 1851-1934
  Jennie Borba 1856-1946
  Wm. Sebastian Borba 1886-1971
  Manuel I. Borba 1878-1977

The woman and the Western Sonoma County Historical Society started
giving me info in obit but I'm sorry I could not write that fast but she did
tell me the obits would have been in either the Santa Rosa Press Democrat or
the Sebastopol paper. Also, she said someone in the office did a study of some
of the people in the area and she said Borba was a familiar name in the area so
you might want to give them a jingle to see what else they might have on the
family.

Adair,

I spoke with a very nice woman at the Western Sonoma County Historical Society
and she found the following. She said they are buried at a little cemetery she
thought was called Forest Lawn on the corner of Bodega Hwy but I have a feeling
it is Sebastopol Memorial Lawn Cemetery as I cannot find a Forest Lawn
Cemetery. I am not familiar with Sebastopol but she said if you get to Pleasant
Hill you have gone too far. So I have called Sebastopol Memorial Lawn and
waiting for them to call me back with exact dates of death for Jennie and
Manuel.

Manuel E. Borba 1851-1934
Jennie Borba 1856-1946
Wm. Sebastian Borba 1886-1971
Manuel I. Borba 1878-1977

The woman and the Western Sonoma County Historical Society started giving me
info in obit but I'm sorry I could not write that fast but she did tell me the
obits would have been in either the Santa Rosa Press Democrat or the Sebastopol
paper. Also, she said someone in the office did a study of some of the people
in the area and she said Borba was a familiar name in the area so you might
want to give them a jingle to see what else they might have on the family.

2010-08-02 Thread celeste perry
Ireis,
Your Manuel may have belonged to the IDES or UPEC (both originally men's
organizations).
The new organization, PFSA (Portuguese Fraternal Societies of America) which
resulted from the merger of the UPPEC, (women) UPEC, (men), IDES, (men) and SES
(I think they always admitted both men & women) may have information about
their members.  I am not sure; however, it may be worth a try to find out which
local councils of the above listed organizations still have active councils.
Those councils may have information about members.  If he joined one of the
organizations, there MAY be death records.
In my experience, it has not been easy to obtain information from any of the
organizations, other than the UPPEC, where my mother and aunt were active from
the 1940's until death in 1997  (for my aunt) and dementia, presently,  (for my
mother) occurred.
The PFSA is located in San Leandro, CA; houses the Freitas Library and may
have information that can help you.  Their email is:  www.mypfsa.org

I think it says villa de Agoa do Pao, not Lagoa. Because you skipped
parts of the record I'm not sure what the s are referring to but
everything else looks correct to me. I think right after Joana de Jesus
it says where Anna was born (Baptiza...) but I'm not sure where it is
saying.

Katherine,

I did a project for a George family in the Fremont Hayward area a few years
ago and was never able to identify the immigrant ancestor. They were from
the Azores and arrived before 1860.

I'd be interested in a scan or copy as I have a dozen or more projects
involving Flores families.
