RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] grandmother with pais incognito

2010-08-05 Thread Judi Phillips

Joanne,
There is an entry on the passports in Ponta Delgada on Feb 13, 1904 for a Jose
Pereira son of Joaquim Pereira and Emilia Augusta traveling with his wife
Francisca de Jesus age 25 and Humberto age 1. If this is your family, they are
from Sao Rogue, Ponta Delgada. Have you tried the microfilm at the FHC? It
should be easy enough to find since you know the birth date.

Hi group,
I hope someone can help me in my quest. On my grandmother's Francisca J
(Almeida) Pereira born July 1 1879 passport application her parents were listed
as pais inognito. It is thought that the Almeida name was that of her foster or
adoptive parents.
Does anyone know where you begin to look for a birth or baptismal record?
I will be in Sao Miguel for ten days. Leaving on August 14. Will be going to
the archives to trace my grandfather's family (Pereira) but she is the one that
I am really interested in. I know that the Almeida family was from Sao Pedro,
Ponta Delgada. One of the wonderful people in this group found her sister's
obituary in Oakland,CA. My grandparents came to the East coast and settled in
Fall River,MA.
She arrived with my grandfather and an 18 month old son named Umberto.
George Pacheco mentioned that the baptisms of those children were kept in
the Matriz church. Any idea as tto how I can see that book?
Am I on a fruitless quest?

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: grandmother with pais incognito

2010-08-05 Thread Katharine
Joanne,

I've found baptisms for children with pai incógnito among legitimate
birth baptisms in 19th-century registos kept in parishes on Flores and
São Jorge, so I wonder if the same was true for São Miguel. In fact,
I'd estimate that roughly 1 in 6 to 8 baptisms in those parishes for
was a child without an acknowledged father -- though of course it's
entirely likely that both parents and their families knew perfectly
well who the dad was :-)

Katharine.

Where to go in San Bruno and Oakland to get naturalization records?

At San Bruno NARA office, you can get copies of the actual citizenship

This is the web page with instuctions. I had a date to look for , so it was

In Oakland, the main public Library has a History Room with city and county

In searching the Pereira Azevedo family I've met so many nice, helpful
people on this website. I'm not sure if the following information
will help you. If not perhaps it will help someone else.
Ted Vierra from Los Angeles wrote my sister:
Because my grandfather Joseph Vierra (1856-1937) who was born on
Flores had in his possession at the time of his death an old
photograph of A.J.Almeida and family taken in Sonora, CA (Tuolumne
County). I have presumed a family relationship, but have never proved
it. Mary Ennis Price, an Azevedo, married A.J.Almeida.
My sister replied I found that Antonio Joseph Almeida lived in
Springfield about 1900 and was a registered voter. The census shows
him living in Berkley and that he had a wife named Mary. Berkley is
a town next to Oakland.
Some of my family used the name Azevedo and some used Pereira,
changing it again to Perry and Prara.

Don Warrin's a great guy, and I'm sure his book is really interesting,
so it should be a delightful evening. My own presentations (blush) of
two books I co-translated -- held last September at several locations
around California, including the J.A. Freitas Library -- was a great
experience. Tim, Isolete and the rest of the folks at the then-UPEC
extended gracious hospitality to all of us involved with the books,
plus there was a fabulous buffet during the book signing! If you go,
be sure to say Hi for me. Katharine.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Velas marriages 1918-20

2010-08-05 Thread Katharine
The only thing I might know is that post-1910 records are stored in
local municipal buildings -- as opposed to in Regional Archives (in
the case of São Jorge, in the Angra Public Library). I vaguely recall
on my first visit to São Jorge that my cousin Carlos tried to check
something for me in Calheta, but it turned out to have been pre-1911,
alas. Presumably Velas keeps its own hard copies of records, though I
have no idea re online availability. Can you email for guidance their
city or concelho hall? Or maybe to the Velas Public Library? Just a
few thoughts. Katharine.

Another great reason for members of this group to attend is that if
you've never been to the J.A. Freitas Library before, you'll be
impressed at what a comprehensive reference resource it is, and it
might be of help in your research! Their web homepage is:
http://www.mypfsa.org/library
I can't seem to find an online listing of their holdings, but it's
late here so my Googling skills are feeling a bit fuzzy :-) If
someone else can locate it online, would you please post it to the
group? Thanks.

Hope some of you are able to attend the event and meet everyone
there! Katharine

P.S. It's not that far from major freeways, as I recall.
