Though Prior is commonly a monastic superior, I've seen it applied to
priests of a mother church.
Your translation seems correct to me.

2012-01-21 Thread Richard Francis Pimentel
Priory could mean another church. This record is from Santissimo Salvador so
Priory could mean NS Estrela which is the mother church (Martz) or any other
church under NS Estrela. So translated it would be "baptized in the above
referred Priory"?

Rick,

In accordance to the American linguistics journal: PiOxah is a semantic
word and it means "to wash" and could also be the instrument which washes,
like soap or a washing board.
 washes.

Veffer is also semantic surname. Veffer+ida. Could indicate a type or brand

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Sao Jorge family names

2012-01-21 Thread Robin Lebo
To all,

Talked to my mom about the name issue. She said that Ava Arminda said they
changed their names on purpose. This may not be for every family, but this is
what she was told. They were really poor in the Azores, so when they came to
America they felt rich and they wanted rich names so they changed their names
to be wealthy Americans. They were so very proud to be called Americans. They
kept their heritage but the names were changed. When they went home to visit,
the family in the village expected them to have a festa. The visitor showed
their wealth by paying for the festa. We have pictures of an aunt paying for
her festa. The celebration was a large one.
This is a family story of what was expected. It may not have been that way with
all families but it might explain some of the name issues.
I do not understand it, but I don't know all the issues associated with it
either.
Hope this helps

Robin

Hi Richard,

It drives me crazy when you do the snips. I can't compare his handwriting
to something else :(

Is this a marriage? If I back up to the end of line 3, I get:
Manuel Lopes, son of Francisco Lopes and of Maria Eugenia, baptized (nat^e
... I'm pretty sure it's an abbreviation. I think it's for native),
something, something.

I can't figure out the efferida word, but I wonder if the next word is
Prioz Or if that "z" is an "x?"

Whatever it is, it's referring to the baptism of Manuel Lopes, the groom.
I think this is a marriage.

Anyone else?
