Two things as to when the picture was taken. The size of the photo looks
like it was taken with an early Kodak box camera, which was common in the
late 20's early 30's. The other is the style of clothing which looks like
about the same era. So to guess I would say about 1930.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Grandfathers Birth Place

2012-02-10 Thread Greg Dias
My name is Gregory Dias, my Portuguese side of the family were in
Oakland, Calif area

I am 63 years old

I am sorry but I don’t speak Portuguese, I have been struggling with
Spanish for years!

I just found out this last December that my grandfather was born on
Faial on October 17 1888

I am trying to find any birth records for him

I am planning to go to Faial soon, I want to stand where he stood.
Maybe connect with distant cousins.

I am really excited since my grandfather died when I was 16 years old
and I never knew anything about his birthplace.

Manuel Dias was the only name I knew him by.

I was told his name was shortened at Ellis Island, I was told that
maybe his name was Furtado and his mother maiden name was Dias

I have searched many a database and can’t quite get a match.

Do you know if Faial has birth records dating back to 1888 ?

Any help would be appreciated or pass my mail on to anyone who may
help me

Thank you,
Greg

Thanks for the information. I have just began my research for my
ancestors. I haven't been able to get much information.
So far I know that my grandfather Joseph (Jose) Machado Silva was born
about 1894 on Terceira and from Angra or San Mateus. His parents were
Antonio Machado Silva and Maria Luz. He and my grandmother came to the
United States in 1921.

My grandmother was Maria Augusta Gonsalves Silva born Jan. 14, 1897 in San
Mateus. Her mother's name may have been Maria Clementina.

That is all the information I have right now. I would love to know how I
can find out more. I may be traveling to Teceira in August, 2012. Is it
best to go directly to the churches for information.

I am also told that my grandmother's father may have been left at an
orphanage on a table. Any information about how orphanages were run would
be appreciated.

Thanks again,

Colleen Wright

Cheryl L,

You are Gmail. Start a new email (so yours doesn't get mixed up with this
thread). To Azores@googlegroups.com Subject: Photos of A B. Or Photos
of ___ Island or whatever. Type what you know in the body. When you are
done, look at the links right below the To box. Add CC, Add Bcc, Edit
Subject, then a paper clip and it says Attach a file. Click that and
upload your photos.

I have Sylvia cousins in Fairhaven. John V. Sylvia, Sr. lived in New
Bedford. He had a daughter Mildred Sylvia. He also had a son John V.
Sylvia, Jr. And a daughter Rose Sylvia. Best I can tell they lived in New
Bedford but John V. Sylvia, Jr. lived and died in Fairhaven. There was also
another son Antone who lived in Fairhaven.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Grandfathers Birth Place

2012-02-10 Thread bellemarco

Greg,

There are quite a few Manuel Dias. Do you know if he came to the US with
wife and children so I might to try and find the right one? I am assuming
you do not have their ship's manifest yet?

PS: Most of us don't speak/read/write Portuguese or Spanish for that
fact..but we learned to read the records with help from online sites..Also,
you will love the Azores.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Granfather's birthplace in Faial

2012-02-10 Thread Tomas Leal
The library in Horta has the various parish records going far back. I
have copies of baptism certificates of my grandfather's oldest brother
who was born in 1869.

The records are stored by parish, then by year and by date.
