RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] New pictures
Two things as to when the picture was taken. The size of the photo looks like it was taken with an early Kodak box camera, which was common in the late 20's early 30's. The other is the style of clothing which looks like about the same era. So to guess I would say about 1930. E, As far as I'm aware (and I'd be the one who'd ok work to the site ;)), the site is up and running. There are two addresses that can be used: http://www.lib.umassd.edu/archives/paa/PADigitalNewsColl.html (where you then click on the box to search); or https://news.arcasearch.com/usmaums/ (which takes you directly to the site). Note that we've added further titles to the database so you'll have to specify that you want to search the Diario de Noticias to limit your search to that specific newspaper. [AZORES-Genealogy] Grandfathers Birth Place
My name is Gregory Dias, my Portuguese side of the family were in Oakland, Calif area I am 63 years old I am sorry but I don’t speak Portuguese, I have been struggling with Spanish for years! I just found out this last December that my grandfather was born on Faial on October 17 1888 I am trying to find any birth records for him I am planning to go to Faial soon, I want to stand where he stood. Maybe connect with distant cousins. I am really excited since my grandfather died when I was 16 years old and I never knew anything about his birthplace. Manuel Dias was the only name I knew him by. I was told his name was shortened at Ellis Island, I was told that maybe his name was Furtado and his mother maiden name was Dias I have searched many a database and can’t quite get a match. Do you know if Faial has birth records dating back to 1888 ? Any help would be appreciated or pass my mail on to anyone who may help me Thank you, Greg -- To unsubscribe from this group, send email to azores+unsubscr...@googlegroups.com. Thanks for the information. I have just began my research for my ancestors. I haven't been able to get much information. So far I know that my grandfather Joseph (Jose) Machado Silva was born about 1894 on Terceira and from Angra or San Mateus. His parents were Antonio Machado Silva and Maria Luz. He and my grandmother came to the United States in 1921. My grandmother was Maria Augusta Gonsalves Silva born Jan. 14, 1897 in San Mateus. Her mother's name may have been Maria Clementina. That is all the information I have right now. I would love to know how I can find out more. I may be traveling to Teceira in August, 2012. Is it best to go directly to the churches for information. I am also told that my grandmother's father may have been left at an orphanage on a table. Any information about how orphanages were run would be appreciated.
