[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Help reading two fathers last names

2012-02-13 Thread sdarosa

Margaret, I can definitely see that it could be Ferreira. The letter F
is the same as the F In Furtado and you really see it when zoomed in.
I will add this possibility into my searching because Perreira is
bringing up nothing over a 45 year period.
Thanks

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Help reading two fathers last names

2012-02-13 Thread sdarosa
I've gone back to Maria Furtada's obituary and it is very clear there
that the abbreviation of her deceased husband's last name begins with
the exact same F as written in Furtado. So I'll begin the search for
Ferreira and see what happens! I'm encouraged and of course won't be
surprised if some other mystery shows up!

If anyone is searching for a Joze Ferreria or Maria Furtado, Velas,
would have been born mid 1600's, let me know

2012-02-13 Thread Richard Francis Pimentel
Hi Suzanne, & Margaret,

Looking again this morning I now agree with Margaret that the name is
Ferreira. While the writing on the record in question is difficult to
discern the capitol letters “F, P &T” I now see two things. The spelling of
Ferreira has a double r where the spelling of Pereira has a single r. If you
look on the left side of that page you will see the name of Bento Pereira at
the top and see how the writer wrote Pereira as compared to Ferreira. I
don’t know how many times I have had difficulty in reading those two names
in records because of the way the writer wrote. I hope this settles the
question for you.

2. Witnesses are Amaro Teixeira de Sousa and Manuel Ferreira Madruga.

I am doing research on the Manoel's father and mother. In this
record, at first glance it appears that his last name is Joze Perreira
but as I look at it, I see an X in the name, and am wondering if it
looksTexeira to anyone else.

also is Maria's father is Silvestre de Viz?

The Perriera/Teixera name clarification would make a big difference in
my searching because I have found various records for Joseph Teixera
and Maria Furtado during the 40 years I am searching, but no birth,
marriage, death records or births of children under Maria Furtado/a
and Jose Pereira. If I have been reading the marriage record of their
son Manoel wrong, this would clear a lot of things up.

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Geneology software

2012-02-13 Thread Richard Francis Pimentel
Hi Rich,

That is kind of an open ended question. I would say a lot depends on your
experience level and what you want to do with your data and how you want to
document your data with sources.

I can only address software for PC's as I have never used a MAC. The most
popular software is Family Tree Maker. I am currently using the 2011 version
which I find faults with. I had previously used other versions and the one I
liked best was the 2006 V16. I have not tried the 2012 version so I am not
sure if they fixed the problems.

I also have TMG (the Master Genealogist) which I have used on a limited
basis. If you are just starting out and this is your first program then you
will not be bothered by the learning curb as much if you are going from
another program.

Sonia,

As far as the US in concerned, I believe a lot of it came when they arrived
in the US and wanted to assimilate with the American culture. I have done
much research in Lisbon at the Archives quite a few years ago but now those
records, as well as other areas of mainland Portugal, are slowly coming
online which it makes it a little easier for all of us. I do know my
Austrian Empire family who went to the Algarve with Napoleon and married
there changed the original spelling when the children came of age and they
changed it to a more Portuguese spelling. Interestingly, the ones who went
to Trieste, Italy after WWII changed it to a more Italian spelling. Since
the land went back and forth between Italy and Croatia, there maybe some
who remained in Croatia who consider themselves Croatia but the ones who
went to Italy consider themselves Italian...although I believe most of them
are loyal to their Italian heritage no matter where they live.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Geneology software

2012-02-13 Thread Kathy Cardoza
E

Well, I'm a Mac user, myself, but I think I can still help you This is how
it is on a Mac and I'm assuming it is the same way on a PC.

So, on your Toshiba laptop, in FTM, go to the File menu and choose Backup to
backup the family file you want to share. Depending on your setup at home,
choose to save the file in a location you can easily find.. perhaps the
Desktop or directly to a plugged in Flash Drive (aka Thumb Drive.) If your
computers are on the same wireless network at home, you can even transfer the
file that way. There are other ways, too, like connecting both computers via a
cable such as Ethernet or USB. BUT, the Flash Drive method is probably the
easiest.

Now that you have your file on the Flash Drive, you need to transfer it to your
second computer, the Mini. I'm not sure about how the FTM directories are set
up on a PC. You could just copy the backed up file to the Desktop of the Mini
or you could copy it directly to a Backups directory within the FTM directory.

Open up FTM on the Mini. Go to the File Menu and choose Restore. Locate where
you put that backed up file from the Toshiba and select that. The File should
restore just fine and there should now be a family file in your FTM directory.

A word of caution on this... If you have linked any media to your FTM file
(as opposed to actually adding it into your FTM file which makes the file much
bigger) those links to photos, census images, etc. MAY not show up on your
Mini. UNLESS you also copy the media and maintain an exact copy on both
computers. I'm not sure about that last one so perhaps someone who does this
with your program can clarify that.

Also, if you make changes to the file on your Mini, you can just reverse the
above procedure to copy those changes back to the Toshiba. Be sure not to make
any changes to the Toshiba file until you have copied the changed file back to
the Toshiba or you'll have a mess on your hands.

All of this may sound pretty confusing. But, if you do it all correctly and be
consistent in your work flow, it will work fine.

I used to do this all the time and even used Dropbox to sync my family history
files and all my media. That method works great, too, but is not for folks who
aren't totally sure of how it works. Now, I'm working only on one computer so
it makes life much easier.

Hopefully this helped you a little. If you need more help, please email me
directly and I will share my phone number so we can talk about it on the phone
if that will help.

Good luck and happy hunting!
Kathy

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: 1940 Census

2012-02-13 Thread Kawika322
To all,

I know that if you are part of the indexing effort with
familysearch.org, you can help index the 1940 census as soon as it is
released. I think they are going to start with the smallest states and
then expand so you can work on states you are more interested in.
Their goal is to have the whole census indexed 6 months after it is
released. I think that this indexing effort will be more accurate then
how ancestry.com is going to be indexing the 1940 census, because I
heard they are outsourcing the indexing work to India so they can get
it done faster and cheaper...however I think that there will be more
inaccuracies and inconsistencies in doing it that way rather than
having people here who may be more familiar with the names to do the
indexing. Anyone can create a free account on familysearch.org and
download the indexing program and start indexing. There are a bunch of
different types of records available now (even some Portugal and
Brazil baptisms and marriages). Hope this helps.

  Thanks,

 David

I was wondering if someone would mind having a look at this record for
the marriage of Manoel Furtado de Mendon a to Maria de Avila,
1723.http://pg.azores.gov.pt/drac/cca/biblioteca_digital/SJVVC1701-1734/SJ...

Thanks
Suzanne

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Azores Visit Suggestions

2012-02-13 Thread Katharine
Diane, With such a brief stop on Faial, your most efficient use of
time might be to ARRANGE IN ADVANCE for a bilingual driver/tour guide
to show you around the island. Can the travel agent booking your
cruise help you with this as well? Or if not, perhaps a concierge on
shipboard can, during the cruise. Explain that you want particular
emphasis on seeing Feteira, Horta and Flamengos, and tell the driver
your family surnames from each of those towns. It's been 8 years
since I used a driver/tour guide on Faial, but back then the standard
charge was 20 Euros/hour; it may well be more now, but at least that
gives you a ball-park figure. You'll also likely want to tip your
guide (20 Euros extra, perhaps).

>From comments others have left here, I gather that the Biblioteca
Pública e Arquivo Regional (Horta public library and archives) no
longer permits hands-on examination of old baptismal, marriage and
death registries (I was last there in late spring 2008, when it was
still allowed). While the new Horta public library (early spring
2008) is lovely, be aware that most of the staff (although wonderful
folks) speak no English.

Hope you enjoy your stop on Faial. Be sure to get a gin-&-tonic or
Coke-with-lemon-slice at Peter Café Sport, which they'll even allow
you to take outside to drink so you can enjoy the scenery! Katharine.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Geneology software

2012-02-13 Thread Diane George
I am a PC user and like Legacy Family Tree, http://legacyfamilytree.com/,
mostly because of the source citation templates. They make it easy to add
complete details for sources in a consistent way. In addition, I am learning
to use TNG (The Next Generation of Genealogy Sitebuilding,
http://www.tngsitebuilding.com/) to create a website to share my information
with family members. Data is exported from Legacy in Gedcom format, then
imported into the TNG site to update the data.

I also use multiple computers (desktop and laptops) so we keep our data
files on a network drive so that the data is accessible from any one of the
computers when we are home. If we need to travel, we just copy the data
files needed to the laptop and open the file on the laptop instead of the
network drive. In the case of any media files, it does mean maintaining
multiple sets of the files, but that also means that you have backups.

If we make updates to the data on the laptop, the updated file can be backed
up and restored to the network drive or in the case of the Legacy software,
I can just copy the pertinent files onto the network drive to update the
data. In addition, data on the network is backed up periodically to another
drive and I maintain a second external drive for additional backups. I keep
it with me whenever we leave the house (it's small and fits easily in my
purse).

2012-02-13 Thread Cheri Mello
For Elaine,

If you are using the same program on different computers (desktop and
laptop), you can back up to a flash drive or use Dropbox.

For Rich Silva:
There is no "best" genealogy software. What you find best or I find best
may be two completely different things. The "best" one for you will be the
one that matches your needs and goals.

The 4 most popular (in alphabetically order) for use on a PC (although a
Mac running VMFusion or Parallels can run these as well):
Family Tree Maker
Legacy Family Tree
RootsMagic
The Master Genealogist

I'll look for a post I made about them later and repost it here.

I believe all have demos except Family Tree Maker.
Legacy: www.legacyfamilytree.com (download the standard version)
RootsMagic: www.rootsmagic.com (I think the "essentials" is free)
The Master Genealogist: www.whollygenes.com (free for 30 days)

Play around with them a bit and see what you like or dislike about them.

There are many other genealogy software programs out there besides the 4
most popular, above. You can find a review here:
http://genealogy-software-review.toptenreviews.com/
You can also google "genealogy software programs" and find more that way.

There are also some cloud-type software programs. Ancestry.com is one. I
think you need a subscription to have your tree housed there, but I'm not
entirely sure.

2012-02-13 Thread Robin Lebo
Greetings,
I started with using legacy and I still use it. Thanks to a cousin, I now have
the family website on tribal pages. It is free up to a certain amount. I have
yet to reach that limit point. My cousin has 25,000 names so he pays a small
fee. I can put citations on it as well as pictures. My cousin has a family
members who served military picture page. It sends out a monthly newsletter and
I have a guest password for family as well as my own for editing. It does not
do any research, just the info. My back up is a flash drive. I am still pretty
new at all this, but for a beginner I really like it.
There is a lot out there and it gets confusing to me. I feel what I have now is
working for what I am doing. As the tree grows, I will probably need to make
changes. It is always a works in progress, just like my garden.

Greg,

So the grandparents divorced? Then he married Pauline?

I'll look for more on this. I have a similar stuation in my family. My
grandmother's sister had a boy hit by a car and killed in San Antonio in
1935. When I

traveled there to meet my great aunt , the family gave me his photo album.
They didn't know what to do with it, but couldn't just throw it out, so I

On the Victorino and Quiteria marriage, you'll see it was January 1888, and
Manuel was born in October. I believe they are his natural parents.

I'm looking forward to reading the book, many people have recommended it to

I have a copy of my fathers birth certificate, I found it the same time I
found my grandfather immigration card.
During the heat of filling out the certificate it shows my grandfathers name
as Manuel Victor Dias and the son (Alvin, my father) with the name Manuel
Victor Dias as well !!
BTW I just finished reading “The Undiscovered Island” by Darrell Kastin
would of read it non-stop but my vision gets blurred...

Thanks again for helping me making it real!

  Greg,

The information was put together mostly from Ancestry.com for shiplist and
censuses, from Vitalsearch for birth and death records, from the Gold Nugget
Library site for

city directories, and the NEPS site.

What I haven't found is much on Elsie Falk. The children she had with Manuel
show her last name as Rose. In the Alameda county area there are a few Elsie
Roses,

born in California, of Danish descent. The Elsie Falks found are also of
Danish background.

Another loose end is the sister Francisca mentioned on the shiplist. I'll get
back to you if I find more.

Greg,

Your lucky day!
I found Manuel Garcia Dias on a ship list coming from Faial to
Massachucetts 1909. It had fathers name, Victorino Dias Furtado. I took this to
the NEPS site for Faial and hunted around a while to find him in Feteiria. That
gave me the Praia do Almoxarife birthplace. So here is what appears to be the
family tree going back four more generations from the great grandfather.

Diane, With such a brief stop on Faial, your most efficient use of time
might be to ARRANGE IN ADVANCE for a bilingual driver/tour guide to show you
around the island. Can the travel agent booking your cruise help you with
this as well? Or if not, perhaps a concierge on shipboard can, during the
cruise. Explain that you want particular emphasis on seeing Feteira, Horta
and Flamengos, and tell the driver your family surnames from each of those
towns. It's been 8 years since I used a driver/tour guide on Faial, but
back then the standard charge was 20 Euros/hour; it may well be more now,
but at least that gives you a ball-park figure. You'll also likely want to
tip your guide (20 Euros extra, perhaps).

>From comments others have left here, I gather that the Biblioteca Pública e
Arquivo Regional (Horta public library and archives) no longer permits
hands-on examination of old baptismal, marriage and death registries (I was
last there in late spring 2008, when it was still allowed). While the new
Horta public library (early spring
2008) is lovely, be aware that most of the staff (although wonderful
folks) speak no English.

Hope you enjoy your stop on Faial. Be sure to get a gin-&-tonic or
Coke-with-lemon-slice at Peter Café Sport, which they'll even allow you to
take outside to drink so you can enjoy the scenery! Katharine.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Geneology software

2012-02-13 Thread Dora Smith
I prefer Personal Ancestral File, available for free from
familysearch.org . It has a Companion that you can buy for about $9,
and it has a demo version.I've found that the basic program itself
seems to do more. PAF is a real workhorse, particularly useful if
you've alot of data to enter, it'll keep any amount of notes, and it
does decent reports.

I use Rootsmagic for particularly pretty reports, and Legacy for web
sites, and occasionally for other things.

I tried Master Genealogist in 2006. I don't recommend it to anyone.
It uses so much computer resources, it froze up on my ca 2002 computer
with 500 mb of RAM, which is what most but the newest desktops have.
It is unecessarily complex and hard to learn, and I recall it not doing
such basics as listing all the children of all the spouses as members of
a family unit. The program has a certain fanatical following, but few
could love it.

I LEAST recommend Family Tree Maker; it uses great gobs of computer
space to do very little. It is perfect for people who just want to
compile a photo scrapbook of the most recent three or four generations
of the family, without alot of depth, and without any particularly
complex family membership, but such people as that wouldn't be on the
Azores list; you're already interested in 18th and 19th century ancestors.

as pictures. My cousin has a family members who served military

research, just the info. My back up is a flash drive. I am still
pretty new at all this, but for a beginner I really like it.
There is a lot out there and it gets confusing to me. I feel what I
have now is working for what I am doing. As the tree grows, I will
probably need to make changes. It is always a works in progress, just

Family Tree Maker
Legacy Family Tree
RootsMagic
The Master Genealogist

Ancestry also has a volunteer data transcription / indexing project.

   Thanks,

Dear E

You are correct, it will take some months to have any viable index for the
1940 so we are stuck with trying to find our people in the same place they
were in 1930! Converting the 1930 ED's to 1940 ED's will be the only way
to find your people in the big cities like New York City, Chicago etc. If
they moved between 1930 and 1940 you may have to wait until there is an
index. The smaller towns can be searched page-by-page but not the big
ones!

Rosemarie

Thanks, Rosemarie, according to Ancestry.com only 50 more days Correct

me if I am wrong, there will not be an index.you have to search by
EDso this site will be VERY useful.
