RE: [AZORES-Genealogy]. New Study--Percentage of Jewish ancestry among Iberian population
I think the Moorish influence in Portugal has been greatly exaggerated over the years especially with regard to Catholicism and conversions. They had great influence in Spain and weren't expelled from that country until 1492 but in Portugal their influence was mainly in the area of commerce and architecture and confined primarily to the the south. Their influence on religion was minor at best in Portugal. By very early 1100s the Crusades had expelled the Moors from Southern Portugal. Boundaries were formed and those boundaries remain essentially the same today as they were in 1139 making Portugal the second oldest country in Europe, second to Denmark in terms of having a defined border etc. Italy for example did not become a country until the 1800s and many countries in Europe were splintered into many factions and territories until even the 1900s. Those divisions continue to this day in many other parts of Europe. -- For options, such as changing to List, Digest, Abridged, or No Mail (vacation) mode, log into your Google account and visit this group at http://groups.google.com/group/Azores. The percentages may be too high. I know of another study in progress and it's not supporting the 20% rate. Far less. We'll have to wait and see what their final numbers are when they publish it. [AZORES-Genealogy] Abreu from Flamengos, Fayal
I am wondering if anyone might have a connection to my 7th great grandparents. Domingos de Abreu was born in Flamengos. he married Luisa Goulart also born in Flamengos I have no dates except that they had a daughter, Josepha Rosa, born in Flamengos and she married in 1767 to Caetano de Sousa of Horta. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy]. New Study--Percentage of Jewish ancestry among Iberian population
Yes Eric that is essentially correct. I am familiar with the the battle of Ourique and the history of Portugal but I think I have made the point I wanted to make. We learn new things on DNA everyday. DNA testing is still in infancy and we will continue to learn more in the coming years. Knowing the history of a nation and it's people allows us to better understand results of DNA studies and to examine those studies with a critical eye. RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Abreu from Flamengos, Fayal
Hi Doug, Caetano de Sousa is pai incognito and according to NEPS born in Horta (Conceicao) to Agueda da Boa Nova. I found his marriage to Jacinta Rosa in Matriz Horta 1727-1802 page 0182. It appears his mother is from Bandeiras but it's unclear and I don't see Pico mentioned in the record. There's a side note that is unclear to me. I haven't noticed any marches with you or your dad. I also keep the DNA for my Uncle, John Cardoza Baptiste and I haven't noticed a match to you with him either. [AZORES-Genealogy] S. Sebastião in Santa Maria?
I recently found a line from S. Pedro of Vila Franca that goes to Santa Maria. The problem is that states that the groom parents were from the parish of s. Sebastiao Santa Maria island. I am not even aware of any church in Santa Maria whose patron would be s. Sebastiao. I even researched online and nothing came up. If anyone has any ideas that would be very much appreciated. I wonder If the priest meant Assunção? [AZORES-Genealogy] Post the links only. Do not attach files
Why I ask people to post the link. Reasons for posting the link: 1) Makes it easier on the translators. They just click the link and read the parts you are having problems with. Requester is not taking up any more of their time by asking them to navigate the CCA site and drill down to that particular record. All that is needed to be told to look at the top right, bottom left, etc. 2) Unless Requester is sure that their format works on all PCs, Macs, Linux and that everyone who reads their post has the same software, the upload won't work. It would have to uploaded in multiple formats, taking up more space in our archive/web board/forum. The link doesn't take up that much space. 3) At least 10 people will send a message to the list saying they can't open the file. The list is busy enough without the extra traffic. Who wants to come home from a long day at work and find 10 messages in their inbox saying that they can't read the file? Please post the links everyone! Thanks! Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Manuel da Silva and Jozefa Leira Achada Grande
Sorry Aaron, I too have been busy with a couple of things and now having the chance to catch up. My husband descends of Joao and Engracia's daughter Genoveva. Her marriage link below. http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-ND-ACHADA-C-1758-1787/SMG-ND-ACHADA-C-1758-1787_item1/P85.html Genoveva da Silva married Francisco Raposo. They had Jeronima Maria da Silva who married Manuel Carreiro. They had Jose Antonio da Silva Carreiro Lazaro who married Maria Candida da Rocha. They had Manuel Carreiro Lazaro da Silva who married Rosa Vitoria de Pimentel, his maternal great-grandparents Nordeste region. His paternal line, Vicente, is from Ponta Delgada. According to my personal findings during a certain timeline women were carrying the surnames of their Mothers, and later on there was a switch and the records show them bearing their Father's surname instead. It is obvious from their obits the Arruda to be her Father's surname and the Maria Vieira listed above might be her sister. Most families would choose Godparents from within their immediate family. I will check this further to see if we can connect the dots. JR (John Roias) has given a link worth exploring. Early records unfortunately are very limited and obits don't give reasons for the deaths. When you see records like these just a couple of days from each other, she died on the first and he died on the 3rd day, leads me to believe it could have been something contagious, in those days, measles and chicken pocks or a certain strain of the flu would be enough to cause death. If and when I may find anything more conclusive I will email. On Mon, Feb 24, 2014 at 4:23 AM, Aaron Pereira pereirah...@gmail.comwrote: Hello Mara. Sorry for the late reply, I sleep in the day and work a strange mid shift, so all of my posts are usually in the late night to early morning hours. That's very interesting because I was actually going to ask you about your surname, Vicente. I have family in Hawaii with the surname Vicente. Francisco de Medeiros Jardim and Maria Vicente's daughter, Margaret Jardim (later Jardin) married a Pereira.(1924). But, It does seem that your husband and I do share some commonality. Your husband is a descendent of one of Joao and Engracia's children? Which child, if you don't mind? I'm from his son Francisco. Btw, I also have Barbara de Sousa and Manuel in my family tree. Also, I wanted to run something by you and get your opinion. I look at Joao da Silva's marriage to Engracia (1759) and I notice that Manuel da Sylva and Josepha are alive, but in in 1766, Manuel's daughter, Maria da Silva's marriage, it states that both Manuel and Josepha have passed on. So, I look in the obitos, between 1760 and 1766, and this is what I find...they're listings are next to each other, (1761) the same month and the same year, I can't tell the day, but it looks pretty close if not a few days apart. But, Josepha is listed as Josepha de Arruda. So, I check a few baptism records for the children of Manuel and Josepha, and there is a Francisco de Arruda listed in the bottom part, under testamentos. He is listed as one of the fathers of a godparent, Maria Vieira. here is Josepha and Manuels death records, Josepha is very bottom, left side of page, and Manuel is very top, right side of page. http://goo.gl/4lGAKe here is the other Joseph's baptism, there were two children named Joseph http://goo.gl/DCA0W6 and here is Maria's baptism http://goo.gl/7fHypo one of the godparents is Maria Vieira, daughter of Francisco de Arruda. I'm very curious as to Manuel's and Josepha's cause of death. I can't read portuguese, very well, but I'm learning. I use google translate for the profession of one of my ancestors (Campónio) and it tells me my ancestor was a redneck haha, I though that was funny. I find it means a peasant or farmer. That makes sense because my family farmed cotton and other crops for generations I also wanted to say thanks to you and others who helped clarify Josepha's surname, Vieira On Sunday, February 23, 2014 6:07:56 AM UTC-8, Mara wrote: Aaron, I took a look at my tree and guess what Manuel da Silva and Josefa Breysa? are direct ancestor's of my husband through their son Joao da Silva married to Engracia de Sousa, daughter of Manuel Furtado Rebelo and Barbara de Sousa. Cheri, In a previous post on the subject (Pesquisa de Passaportes Feb. 7) you passed along Mel's e-mail address. I tried to send a message and have yet to hear from her. I also tried the website yourislandroutes.com and sent her a message via the e-mail address there, still nor reply. Either she is busy to reply or both addresses are incorrect. If you type in islandroutes.com it takes you to a Caribbean travel site. Do you know of a different address to contact Mel?
