Edna, you've got both the date and names correct.  Some times
people/priests dropped or added names/surnames.  Try finding other children
to see if "de Quadros" shows up but I'm inclined to think this is the
record you're looking for if the date matches more or less.

I've been a quite follower of your board for many years. This is the first time 
I"ve replied. My Great Grandfather, Joao Baptiste Perreira came from Terceira 
and my Great Grandmother was from Pico. I recently visited both islands for two 
reasons:  one to see where my ancestors came from, but also because I am 
writing a novel and some of it takes place in Praia da Vittoria in Terceira. I 
went with my daughter and it was a wonderful visit.


While there took a lot of pictures and made a lot of notes for my book, which I 
am now working on the section that takes place in Praia da Vittoria. One of the 
things I want to reference is a very small chapel, and I found a description of 
it, but it is in Portuguese, which I don't speak! So I'm stuck. 


The first person I thought of turning to for help with the translation is you. 
Would you be willing to translate this for me, or do you know someone who might 
do me such a nice favor? I would be so grateful!

O Império dos Marítimos da freguesia de Santa Cruz, concelho da Praia da 
Vitória, Terceira, fica situado no Largo José Silvestre Ribeiro, no local onde 
foi outrora a Ermida de São Pedro Gonçalves, e a sua data de construção remonta 
ao último quartel do século XIX, ao ano de 1877.


Esta irmandade celebra a festa em honra do Divino Espírito Santo no denominado 
Domingo da Trindade.
O Império dos Marítimos contem imagens e tem a forma de uma capela. Devido ao 
pequeno número de irmãos e às dificuldades vigentes, esta irmandade não tem 
tido a possibilidade de realizar  atividades culturais durante a semana. Porém, 
no Domingo da Trindade realiza-se o cortejo do Divino Espírito Santo, 
acompanhado por uma filarmónica para a Igreja, onde é celebrada missa de festa, 
no fim da qual se realizam as coroações. Neste dia tiram-se os pelouros e é 
nomeada a comissão para o ano seguinte.


No âmbito da festa deste império, realiza-se, no sábado seguinte, uma tourada à 
corda.

Can a someone translate this plaque that Jack (Perry) Matthews saw at the
ermida in Praia da Vitoria on Terceira? I can get the gist of it, but he
wants to put it in a book, so a better translation would be needed.

Cheri,

I'm on my way out and unable to translate it until tomorrow.  In any case,
heads up to anyone who may do so is that the "observation" regarding the
little chapel is indeed what they call it "o Imperio" it looks like a
chapel but it's not.  This is where they store the Crowns and Flags during

OK, because I thought it said when it was built, that it was used for
Espirito Santo, and that they have the Tourada a Corda (bullfight on a
rope) the following Saturday. That's why I asked for someone else to
translate it. I can get the gist, but misunderstanding a couple of things.

Thank you, Manuel!! 

It may surprise you to know that I did not know Vila Franca had marriage 
records in the mid 1650's. Because when I last checked years ago, all I saw 
were empty pages and assumed, rather foolishly, that the whole period had 
nothing in it. Then I saw your posts and noticed the mid 1600 dates, so now 
I am revisiting the whole period. Lots missing, but many are still in good 
shape.

I think there may still be conflict with Manuel da Costa Grosso, so I will 
recheck my records.

These marriages clearly indicate father as Manuel Costa Grosso and not 
Carvalho:

Grosso is an alcunha meaning, fat, strong.

The surname Raposo in Miguel da Costa [Raposo] (m. to Ana de Andrade) is a 
good clue. Luzia Carvalho, the mother of Manuel da Costa Carvalho, was the 
daughter of Manuel Raposo.

"The "Império" of the the seafarers of the Parish of Santa Cruz, concelho of 
Praia da Vitória, Terceira, is located in the Largo José Silvestre Ribeiro, 
where there once stood the Chapel of São Pedro Gonçalves, and the date of its 
construction goes back to the last quarter of the 19th century, to the year 
1877.
This brotherhood celebrates the feast in honor of the Holy Spirit on the so 
called Trinity Sunday. 

The "Império dos Marítimos" contains statues and is in the form of a chapel. 
Due to the small number of members and the existing difficulties, this 
brotherhood does not have the means to provide for the cultural activities 
during the festival week. Bur, on Trinity Sunday, there is the procession of 
the Holy Spirit, with a band, down to the church, where the feast day Mass is 
celebrated, at the end of which there are the coronations. On this day the 
drawings are held and next year's festival commission is named.
As part of the festivities of this "imperio" on the following Saturday there is 
the roped bullfights."

The last few times I've gone on ftDNA and have found new "cousins" with
Ancestor Trees available, I have been irritated. When you click on their
tree you find only their name... with no tree at all! I don't even consider
it a seed.
If you are one of these people, do us all a favor, eliminate your "tree".

I too utilize the posted tree to find relatives. I manage several relatives 
profiles and occasionally check it on all my profiles to see if I can find 
connections to the matches. It is make it more difficult to open a tree to find 
it has one name or just their name and their parents. To help me keep track of 
those matches I type no tree in the note section. A note with no known 
relationship most likely means that they have no tree or I have already emailed 
them and was unable to find the connection. A note and a known relationship 
means the note will have how we are related and in some case that can be many 
different distance way only making us distant cousin but many time over so the 
relationship calculator think we are closer related. I hope this helps. Maybe 
someone has a better way of organizing the search efforts? If so please share 
your methods.

The last few times I've gone on ftDNA and have found new "cousins" with 
Ancestor Trees available, I have been irritated. When you click on their tree 
you find only their name... with no tree at all! I don't even consider it a 
seed.

If you are one of these people, do us all a favor, eliminate your "tree".

Good idea Doreen. In the past I have only used the notes to denote an email
sent. I will now "flag" those who have no real tree online.

Well, that's not a Family Tree DNA (FTDNA) issue, it's the person who
tested who has not uploaded their tree.

Here is an excerpt of the Welcome Letter that goes out when someone joins
the Azores DNA project:

Welcome to the Azores Islands DNA Project!  We are glad you have decided to
join us!
Blah blah blah...

Some things to do while you send in your DNA and wait for your results to
come in:

   - See how a DNA sample is collected: http://davedorsey.com/dna.html


   - Get your Gedcom in order.  If you use diacritics (non-English
   letters), you’ll need to make sure you save them with ANSEL encoding for
   uploading to the DNA web sites.If you don’t know what a Gedcom is or
   don’t have a genealogy software program, please let us know. We have simple
   directions with pictures for creating Gedcoms from the most popular
   genealogy programs or we can create a Gedcom for you.

(Well, except it's not in red in the letter. And since they have "upgraded"
things, I'm not sure if it's ANSEL or if they want ANSI. I'm pretty sure
UTF-8 coding doesn't work).

Note: They get this email only if the join a project. If they are not part
of the Azores DNA project, they may not know. Please let them know there is
an Azores DNA project that they can join.

All you can do is ask them to upload their Gedcom so you can see their
tree. If they don't know what a Gedcom is or need help, send them over to
me or Rick. I think Nancy Jean is gone on vacation right now.

saint at some point during the summer. Those smaller festas are not

RR's book, chapter 4, §12, N. 3

I didn´t find yet the marriage of Manuel Raposo and Luzia Carvalho in MVFC 
and I think it's possible that we can link them to RR's book.

Sebastião de Arruda and his sister Luzia Carvalho, residents of Arrifes, 
freguesia of São Mateus de Ponta Delgada, appear as Teresa's godparents. 
Teresa, the daughter of Manuel da Costa [Carvalho] and Margarida da Costa, 
was born in MVFC on 15 sept 1709 - CCA #249.

In the baptism of Francisca on 3 nov 1710 - CCA #9 the godparent is 
Sebastião de Arruda, single, native of the freguesia de São Mateus, Ponta

The last few times I've gone on ftDNA and have found new "cousins" with
Ancestor Trees available, I have been irritated. When you click on their
tree you find only their name... with no tree at all! I don't even consider
it a seed.
If you are one of these people, do us all a favor, eliminate your "tree".

However, it's not FTDNA's fault that people don't email back. The same
thing happens on AncestryDNA and 23andMe as well. Not everyone answers
back. Sometimes it's them and sometimes it's the sender.

If someone is managing multiple kits and the email says "Hi I match you"
they have no idea who "you" is. If you state "Hi I'm matching Fred G.
Jones" then they have a starting point.
