Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Need help with a birth place

2016-08-03 Thread Steve Wright
Yahoo! Found my grandfather's passport information. It verifies what my
father always said that he was from Sao Mateus, Graciosa! He left from
Angra and came through New York at the age of 11! Settled in Lawrence,
Mass. Doesn't look like he traveled with his parents though - so more
unanswered questions!
His name was not written correctly on ship's manifest which added to
confusion. I have been searching for him for several years. I had records
of him once he was in Massachusetts but not in Azores. So exciting to have
this information.

Thank you Cheri Mello and Richard Pimentel all for your help.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Need help with a birth place

2016-08-03 Thread Steve Wright
It was my mother's DNA. Francisco Sousa Rosa is my father's father.

I found the ship manifest and he is listed as Franco de Sensa Rosa age 11.
When looking at writing, I'm almost sure Sensa is Sousa. He was born Oct.
1887, so age fits. Shows leaving from Terceira. So I will search passports
for Terceira now. Trying to make out other passengers names he may have
traveled with.

If I did my DNA, would it help in showing my father's? My only brother has
passed and no other living males. I see that FTDNA is having a sale now.

So excited to finally find out more about my dads side.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Family Tree DNA's Sizzling Summer Sale starts Wednesday, August 3

2016-08-03 Thread Cheri Mello
Siblings would get different results.

We get 50% of our DNA from dad and 50% from mom. A sibling would also get
50% of dad and 50% of mom. Who says it's the same 50%? Because the DNA is
mixed (like a card shuffle), a sibling doesn't get the same 50% that we
got. A good chunk of it is the same, but some of it is a bit different.

Regarding matchings, siblings will have the same close matches. So if your
1st cousin tested, you should both match the 1st cousin. The difference
shows up more in the distant matches (4th, 5th, remote).

This is assuming we are talking about FULL SIBLINGS. And if there has been
rumors in your family or a skeleton in the closet, DNA will let you know.
So if you really don't want to know what grandma did, DON'T DNA test. Rick
Pimentel is working with a DNA match where it seems someone went out to the
cow pasture.

Also, siblings will get different ethnicities. Rosemarie and her brother
have both DNA tested. They are half Italian and half Portuguese. One seems
to get more Italian matches and the other seems to get more Portuguese
matches.

It's good to have siblings test if it's in the budget.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Need help with a birth place

2016-08-03 Thread Cheri Mello
The Dona Maria sailed into New York on Oct. 1, 1899. That must be your ship
and the date.

However, that ship picked up people from all 3 Azorean ports before making
it to New York. However, you may be able to find him on Ancestry as only
you know your ancestor's birth date. The ships list will say sailed from
Sao Miguel and list those passengers for a few pages, then say Angra and
list those passengers and so on. So once you find your ancestor, then go to
the CCA and look there.

If you don't have an Ancestry subscription, your local FHC and public
library have one. It is against Ancestry terms for anyone to look up the
stuff for you and publicly post it.

Yeah, they wrote what they heard. My ancestor said she came on the
Pensailor. No ship ever existed by that name. I had the date and found the
Peninsular. Also, she said she immigrated under the name of Gloria Correia.
She was 13 at the time of immigration. 50 years later when she's filling
out these forms (well, she couldn't write) her memory as a bit different.
And she was not the one giving her name to the immigration officials. Her
16 year old sister was. And her 16 year old sister liked using the family
alcunha. Her paperwork for the INS had a big stamp that said UNABLE TO
VERIFY. Nope, they could not find any Gloria Correia coming to New York on
that date (but they did figure out it was the Peninsular). Why would
American INS workers in the 1950s even think that Gloria Correia was the
same person as Maria da Gloria Viola?

Anyways, you're getting close!

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Need help with a birth place

2016-08-03 Thread Richard Francis Pimentel
Colleen,

I would suggest you go to the Ellis Island website. Try looking up his name in
any number of variations with the ship name and date of arrival you can always
find the manifest by backing into it and then check the names one by one. The
manifest should also say where what island it departed from and then go to the
passport records which are on line at the CCA web site. Most people emigrating
applied for their passport within a month of departing so start searching with
the arrival date and work back a couple of months.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Joao Afonso das Grotas Fundas and the Counts of Benavente

2016-08-03 Thread Cheri Mello
You know how ideas are really good in theory but sometimes when we put them
to practice, well, we run into obstacles?

Joao Afonso Grotas Fundas...born mid to late 1400s, d. 1512. Work tracing
ALL his sons forward for the past 550 years to wherever his descendants
went: America, Canada, Brasil, Bermuda, Australia, etc. AND find a living
son. That's a half a century of work! And do the same thing for the Count.

Who are the sons of Joao Afonso of Grotas Fundas? Who are sons of the Count?

Is someone on this list a strict line male descendant of those two men?
Maybe. Are they sitting on the other side of the computer hiding out? I
doubt it. If they are a strict line male descendant, they probably don't
know it. Maybe it's Rick Pimentel. He's done a bunch of research, but he
ran out of records way before the mid to late 1400s. Many people don't have
their genealogy back to the 1400s because of the lack of records. And then
we have this group of people - they either don't have an island or a
freguesia yet and have not been able to search. Or maybe they have their
island & freguesia but find reading the records intimidating and really
haven't begun their research in the Azores. Maybe it's Peter Pimentel who
lives in Omaha, Nebraska and is 1/16th Portuguese and doesn't do genealogy.
(He's fictional, by-the-way). Maybe it's Mike Miller (also fictional) who
lives in New England and whose family has been there forever, since
Mayflower times. Or so he thinks. His surname is Miller and he assumes it
is English and he assumes he goes back to the American colonial families.
He doesn't know that Miller is an anglicization of Mello and that he's
really Portuguese. His sister does all the genealogy by following the
little green leaves on Ancestry and she thinks they are Mayflower
descendants too.

It would take a lot of work to trace the strict male lines forward. Not
only for Joao Afonso, but William van der Haagen, Jose d'Utra, etc, etc. It
would be wonderful to have the Y DNA of those prominent men of the Azores.
And Gaspar Frutuoso too. But he was a priest and as far as we know,
celibate. Did he have any brothers? So many good sample to get. Everyone
should DNA test even if they are just beginning in genealogy. They may be
that person that we are after and they just don't know it yet.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Family Tree DNA's Sizzling Summer Sale starts Wednesday, August 3

2016-08-03 Thread Cheri Mello
Elaine,

It's you.

If you are trying to order a BRAND NEW KIT, you can't do it by logging into
YOUR page.

Regarding your husband: Has he DNA tested before? If not, then just go to
www.ftdna.com and place the order. If he has tested with FTDNA, what
test(s) have you had done on him?

Regarding the McNeal cousin: Has he DNA tested before? If not, then just go
to www.ftdna.com and place the order. If he has tested with FTDNA, what
test(s) have you had done on him?

You won't be able to order Fam.Finder if these 2 men have already had that
test done.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Lourenço Antonio Bonito Viera married to Ana Julia Linhares

2016-08-03 Thread brownat68
Thank you for all the information everyone is finding on this family.

Are any of the siblings born in Sao Jose?

Is there a rule with the surname Lourenço? Sometimes it is a surname
sometimes it is a first name? There is a Lawrence family in Plymouth my
mother was told were cousins of ours through the Luis Lourenço Bonito Viera
family. I am starting to think this is not the case. I am supposed to
interview the Lawrence family at some point which would help.

Those of us that are descendants of João Afonso can all pitch in for a
Y-DNA test.

I remember someone posting information a year or so ago that a university
was going to publish a paper about João Afonso (de Pimentel) das Grotas

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Joao Afonso das Grotas Fundas and the Counts of Benavente

2016-08-03 Thread Manita M
Dear direct paternal line descendant of Joao Afonso das Grotas Fundas,

We need your Y DNA tested to confirm a mystery and be able to make a huge
breakthrough with one of the original settlers of the Azores.

Of course we would then need to find a direct paternal descendant of his
father, the Count of Benavente and do the exact same thing and determine if
there is a Y DNA match, but even if that is years away, it would still be
helpful.

A bunch of us, myself included descend from this man and I'm dying to know
if it's true that he is who we think he is, then we connect to Rainha Santa
Isabel and some other VERY interesting people in history.

This is exactly what we need in order to have scientific proof. Otherwise,
we will never know for sure. We NEED to figure this out. It's an
intriguing story that needs to be told and properly researched.

Is there anyway that we could identify a direct male descendant of Joao
Afonso das GF? Then get the Y DNA done on that person?

Is there anyone in this group that is on the direct paternal line to Joao
Afonso das GF? Please, please identify yourself and would you please do a Y
DNA test? If too cost prohibitive, I am sure a bunch of us would sponsor
that test for you, me included.
