Yeah, I know. That link thing is dumb. I uncheck the box so the person
doesn't know that I linked them. Well, they know because I've emailed them
already.

I'll let the tree guy at FTDNA know. I've already told Customer Service
once.

*Ken,*

*I agree with Susan and Rosemarie. You're dreaming if you think you can
visit more than one Island in 3 days and do it justice. Your time would be
better spent doing one island well. The $82 trip to Terceira sounds like a
good deal. Summer is a great time with a lot of Festas and Portuguese style
bullfights on Terceira. Air reservations between islands can sometimes be
iffy and you could easily spend a good part of that time sitting in
airports. If you want to get to Graciosa, I would consider dumping Morocco
and use that time to visit Graciosa. There are inter-island ferries that
operate between about May - September and connect Terceria to the central
group which includes Graciosa.Google Azores islands Inter-island ferry's
and look at the Yellow Line Schedules. That is cheaper than flying and may
offer more flexability. What does your schedule look like, maybe we can
come up with more suggestions if we knew? *

If I am making it through this correctly, the groom's parents are from
Ribeira Seca (lines 11-12). The bride's parents are from Topo and the
bride was baptized there (lines 14-15). All are parishioners in Rebeira
Seca (line 15) where the groom was baptized (line 16).

On your note about linking people Cheri.I know you will be posting a
video about this. I just wanted to ask you about the fact that I got two
emails today saying in one that I was added to their family tree and in
another, that my brother was addedbut I have no clue who did the
linking. I looked at my pedigree chart and cannot see whoever it was that
added me and my brother. There was a link on the email but it did not work.
Will we be able to know who links us? And I am not sure if this is good or
not.if everyone is right, that is great, but if they are not right,
then it reminds me of all the errors on Ancestry.com and why i have never
posted a tree there. So who will see these links...only the person who
links them, or anyone who looks at their pedigree??
Interesting!!

You need to upload a Gedcom and start linking people. I suggest you get
everyone back 10 - 12 generations and make sure it includes everyone coming
forward (so your 3rd, 4th, 5th cousins are in your tree). Upload that and
start linking. I'm making a video on it. I've been busy the last 10 days
and hope to get to it this weekend.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Azores Visit

2017-02-26 Thread 'Susan Murphy' via Azores Genealogy
Ok, I will elaborate, as Mary said, I was diplomatic and you will see that I
was!! I know this is not genealogy but it is entertaining I think:)

One funny story was the last time I went with my dad, when he was close to 80
and hard of hearing (so I had to be the “I speak broken Portuguese”
negotiator)…We sat ON the plane in Oakland for THREE hours for whoever knows
what reason and consequently got to Terceira very late and missed our
connecting flight to Faial. (Now mind you, they knew in Terceira that SO many
on our flight were going on that flight to Faial, and heard that they left with
only a handful of people, but they took off without us anyway). So we ended up
stranded in Terceira waiting for an afternoon flight. We were all in the same
boat because we had come off the same fight but the people in charge said my
dad and I were at the end of the line because our luggage had come off last!
OK…..so then they said that our luggage would be going to Faial but we would
NOT. You can get a visual of me and my cute dad running out on the field
saying…don’t take our luggage!! They had mixed our luggage up as there was
another Vargas pair on their way to Faial and thought it was their luggage.
We had been at the airport for hours and, at that point, I broke down and cried
because they said we would have to spend the night and we had reservations only
in Faial. We had had NO sleep! The sweet lady at the desk called someone and
got us a hotel and arranged a taxi to take us there. But still we missed a day
at our destination of Faial. To be fair that was in about 1997.

Fast forward to just two years ago when we took my daughter’s family to the
Azores. (it is my goal to try to take all my grandchildren when they are old
enough). So we were all set to leave on the charter flight from Oakland on a
Monday. I think it was about Thursday that we got a call that our plane was was
having problems and they had to “rent” a plane and now we would be leaving on
Sunday NOT Monday (what?? My grandsons were all in swim championships on Sunday
and practically had to dry off and change in the car and dash to the airport)
So…you can imagine, we had NO hotel reservations, so Sata put us up in a hotel
in Terceira and also paid for our meals because we were a day early…. They also
transported us to and from the hotel but we were made to wait in a ramshackle
bus for a long time for them to fill the bus. Well, it was great to get that
extra day but little did know that the saga of SATA was not over:)

When we went to fly home two weeks later, we took off and had flown for close
to an hour when an announcement came on that we were going back. We had not
picked up altitude and I want you to know that it was SO SCARY and I’m sure a
LOT of promesas and hail Mary’s were offered up! It felt like we were on the
little Engine who could…..Not quite make it!! We were all pretty frightened
except my youngest grandson who just delighted to be going back!
Now they had to put us up again while the airplane was repaired. This ended up
being a great experience as it was a festa weekend and most hotels were booked.
So they sent us by taxi to Quinta do Martelo which is an agritourism place, in
the countryside. I slept that night in an old lava rock house and imagined I
was back in time. The food was the best of our two weeks in the Azores…but I am
not sure it was worth the frightening experience. I have to tell you that I
was still very nervous to get back on the SAME plane to go home the next day.
But we all lived to tell the story and my only regret was that we did not buy
those T Shirts that say “I Survived Sata” :)
So now you know the rest of the story and why, if I have the hoped for
privilege of taking my last little family group (one grandson is only three)….I
am planning to go to the mainland and then take TAP!!

It’s an adventure!

I fly SATA all the time. They have improved greatly and except for the uniforms
of the cabin crew and the exterior design of the plane, you'd be hard pressed
to  differentiate SATA from TAP. Unfortunately, neither airline serves the
great meals that TAP used to serve, and the bar service is almost non-existent.
I have never had a problem with baggage.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Baptism record - Francisco (Jose da Terra) of Cabo da Praia Terceira 1864

2017-02-26 Thread linda
Hi Evee,

If I read it correctly, the margin note is making a correction to the info
on the baptism that the mother's name was Isabel Victorina, not Isabel de
Ascencao. A native speaker should confirm that, though.

O Vig.o JMendes

hope that helps,

Linda

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Manuel De Sousa De Mattos and Maria Silveira Wedding

2017-02-26 Thread Rosemarie Capodicci
Louie, it says that both of the marrying couple are from Ribeira Seca so,
look for their baptisms in Ribeira Seca to the parents mentioned. You have
the parental names correct except you need to start writing them with the
small 'de' not capital 'de'. It should be written, Manuel de Souza de
Mattos/Matos. I don't think we talked about which program you are using but
most allow you to write the given name and first surname as Manuel de Souza
de on one line then Mattos on the Surname line. When it prints it comes out
Manuel de Souza de Mattos.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Azores Visit

2017-02-26 Thread Leonard Silva
Don,
My grandfather, Manuel Correia Silva, was also from Covas, Graciosa. He was
born in 1865. He married Anna Mendonca, born 1863, also from Covas. I know
so very little of his life pre immigration. Please contact me if you have
anything to share.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Azores Visit

2017-02-26 Thread Mary Bordi
Ah yes, SATA. I like Susan's diplomacy! There's the nickname "Sitting At
The Airport".

We were fortunate to be on a tour with a guide who knew that SATA owed us a
free meal of the delay was longer than a certain amount of time.

Of course, the weather conditions can be changeable and flights can be
delayed. But sometimes it's inexplicable!
