[AZORES-Genealogy] Help with Bretanha Óbitos - 1862

I understand most of it but I have 2 questions -
1) is that the word “exposta” after Claudina’s name?
2) Can someone translate the last sentence after Francisco de Camara’s name?

I always appreciate the help - thanks!

Hi Rosemarie,
Thanks for your response. I have used Joao Ventura recently. He was able
to find one document for me but had difficulty locating for others largely
because the information I had given him was perhaps not 100% accurate. But
I think I will redouble my efforts with Joao. Thanks again.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Question on Madeira research

2017-05-16 Thread Cheri Mello
Joining Rootsweb lists doesn't work that way. Sending a message to
prt-made...@rootsweb.com means you sent the word "subscribe" to everyone on
the list. Follow the directions in the link I provided in the previous
email. Here it is again:
http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/intl/PRT/PRT-MADEIRA.html

Tombo.pt is only a portal (like an index or a table of contents) to the
Portuguese based arquives. He's written code to crawl all the Portuguese
based sites in the Azores, Madeira, and the continent of Portugal. He then
presents you with what is available all on one page.

Hope that clarifies things! Cheri

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Question on Madeira research

2017-05-16 Thread 'Denise' via Azores Genealogy
Hi Maria Elena,

Yes there is a Madeira email list like this one. The email is
prt-made...@rootsweb.com. I believe if you send an email to that address saying
SUBSCRIBE it should get you on the list. In the meantime, the way Erica
explained how to view the Madeira films on line at FamilySearch.org is the best
way of doing it, just follow her instructions. Tombo and the Archivo Regional
da Madeira are no where near where Family Search is right now.

There's no need to compare lists, just go to the site that has what you're
looking for. Not all parishes are available yet but a decent amount are.

It's very clear on Tombo.pt that Madeira is not all there. I don't have the
time to sit down and compare the records that Tombo.pt is catching from the ABM
(Madeira's CCA site) to the records that Family Search is doing. I'll leave
that to someone who researches Madeira. Cheri

2017-05-16 Thread Cheri Mello
I'm not so sure about that.

Tombo.pt shows only 975 Madeira records digitized by the Madeiran
government so far, with more to go. Family Search has 50? Someone needs to
sit down and compare the two. Are they counting books? Parishes? Or what?

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Question on Madeira research

2017-05-16 Thread Erica Botelho
Familysearch.com has just digitized almost all of their Madeira records. You
can access them through searching their "catalog". Type in the place "Madeira,
Portugal" and "search". Then choose the option of "church records - 50 items".
This will bring you to a list of all of the freguesias of Madeira. Pick your
freguesia and click on it. That will bring up a list of all the records they
have. If the icon to the right is a camera, then you can click on that link
and look through them. If the icon is a film reel, then those records are not
uploaded to the internet yet and only available through ordering them directly.
If you have any other questions, you can email me directly audiosourceinc at

Subject: [AZORES-Genealogy] Question on Madeira research

A friend asked me for help on his wife's Madeira ancestry. I'd like to help
with reading the records for them but I'm not sure the records are online like
the Azores. I'm not even sure yet if there's more than one island - sorry to
admit in public - I'm just starting to explore how I can help them.

Is there an equivalent list for Madeira like this one?

Thanks,

Maria Elena

Yes, however Joao lives on Terceira and probably has to collect enough
requests to make it worth his while to go over there. I also put in a
request to Joao, so now he has at least 2 from Sao Miguel!

 Hello Everyone,

My name is Andrew Medeiros. I currently reside in Rhode Island and I
just joined your group today. I am currently doing research for my family
who originated on Sao Miguel, specifically I have been looking at Ribeira
Grande. Does anyone know when CCA will be releasing the records for
1906-1910? I really need to be able to research these years as I do not
know the exact parish and date of a wedding that occurred around this time.
If not, anyone know how I could contact them to find out?

 Thanks,
 Andrew

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: LAST NAME OF GROOM's FATHER

2017-05-16 Thread JR
If you want to standardize names, then it should be Velho, as Velha is the
feminine application. Today, except for names which are inherently
feminine, like Rosa on the Island Faial, only one version is used and it is
Velho. In their time, Maria and Barbara used Velha. It is up to you how you
want to log this information so long as you record the the correct
historical spelling somewhere in your notes.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: LAST NAME OF GROOM's FATHER

2017-05-16 Thread Cheri Mello
An "a" is feminine or female and an "o" is masculine or male. So Velho or
Pacheco are on men's names and Velha or Pacheca are on women's names.

With the diacritics (José, Conceição) you have to export it as ANSI or
ANSEL. João who does the computer programming and the Tombo.pt site can
probably explain better.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: LAST NAME OF GROOM's FATHER

2017-05-16 Thread Rosemarie Capodicci
JR,
I totally agree with you on the modern spellings. I think that some of the
priests sat there and tried to think of different ways to spell some of
those names! I use the modern spelling all of the time and put the actual
transcription spelling in my note sections. I've never tried to put in the
accents because I'm never sure about them and I've seen how they get messed
up when you try to make a GEDCOM or transfer from one program to another.

JR- thanks for the info and also on the accents- I had started getting fancy
adding accents but fortunately, I usually forget, so I will not any more.

So I'm asking would the woman be VELHA and the man VELHO?

Thanks so much for taking the time.

2017-05-16 Thread JR
You have it right. It is Francisco Paxequo (Pacheco) fo. de Manoel da Graca
ja defunto...

I always use the modern spellings within reason. This makes it easier for
your program to find a name when doing a search. Of course you can and
should put the correct historical spelling in the notes section; that is
where you place your transcription of the record. Some programs allow you
to index names starting with first names, and that is method well suited
for Portuguese names. I only realized this when Margaret V. brought it to
my attention.

One other thing to consider is accents. Yes it is nice to be accurate and
use Portuguese accents. However, I have had nothing but problems when
trying to create Gedcoms and reloading to a new or updated program. They
often come out as coded gibberish- sometimes to the point where I can't
recognize what the name actually was. I won't go through that again and
risk corrupting my entire database. So I use plain alphanumerical lettering
in all my records.
