Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Help with St. Mary's Home New Bedford, MA

2019-05-25 Thread 'John Raposo' via Azores Genealogy
Back in that time period it was a home for orphans and for children whose
parents couldn't provide for them. In the latter case parents might visit on a
Sunday, etc.

In the 1970 and eighties, it was a residential treatment program for troubled
children. After it closed the building was used for a pre-release program and a
prison diversion program for incarcerated women with a history of substance
abuse.

I'm not sure if Children's Aid exists anymore. If it does, it's on the east
coast of America. In California, we have only the Department of Welfare and

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Help with St. Mary's Home New Bedford, MA

2019-05-25 Thread Cheri Mello
I think the Children's Aid Society was an east coast thing and when they
got too many kids, they started shipping them out all over the U.S. on
Orphan Trains. Basically child labor. I know for sure it wasn't a western
U.S. thing.

2019-05-25 Thread Margaret Vicente
Terri,

It’s good to do your own search to verify but you will be searching in vain,
if indeed this is the couple you are working on. They only had 3 children
(Umbelina, Joao and Maria] plus one unborn child at the time of the father’s
death. Umbelina was already married by the time the parents were wed.

Here’s the marriage record on the death bed of Joao Travassos and Josefa
Mariana, right sight. Look at the bottom where you will see the named children
the couple had between them.

http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-VF-SAOMIGUEL-C-1836-1856/SMG-VF-SAOMIGUEL-C-1836-1856_item1/P115.html

I have ancestors married at 12 and 13 years of age.

Bill, I also agree with Mariano because if you go back and forth to see what
the letters are that bleed through, you can sort of eliminate the dark letter P
that's coming through. Then, notice how the priest writes the letter M. He
has a little circle at the base of the M almost like an o or e before he
starts going up on the M. (If that makes sense).

I also have a Mariano in my husband's ancestry and it is unusual. Hope this
helps you.

The index was made by a human and humans can make mistakes. Look at all the
kids and look for gaps between kids. Then search those gaps by hand.

I'm suspicious that there was only ONE Maria!

 Terri,

The record states the different dates and places of baptism for the
Joao and Maria, who were both Expostos; Joao on Mar 9th 1834 baptized
same day in Candelaria. Maria baptized in Sao Sebastiao de Ponta Delgada …
days of of the month of January of 1844.

The document is a legitimization record for these two exposto children
on their father’s deatch bed as declared in the hour of his death
recognizing them and marrying/receiving their Mother ……… marriage … book 8
 of this Parish pages 113….

It also goes to say the mother also recognized them as her own children…

She married and died in Sao Miguel Vila Franca do Campo.

Her death record on 10 July 1896 states she died at the age of 53 years
old. That makes her birth year c.1843, but that would make her 11 years
 old at marriage.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Help with St. Mary's Home New Bedford, MA

2019-05-25 Thread Cheri Mello
What is CAS? Depending on where you live, acronyms can have so many
meanings. It's always best to take your time and spell these things out to
avoid confusion.

Using quotes in a search is helpful. I did "st mary's home" "new bedford"
just like that:
https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-1-d=%22st+mary%27s+home%22+%22new+bedford%22

It appears it was an orphanage.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Help with St. Mary's Home New Bedford, MA

2019-05-25 Thread Leonor Bertoni
Hello all,
I found a 1920 census for St. Mary's Home, my cousin's wife lived there
when she was a child (9 years old). I have tried to search for information
but have been unsuccessful, I found a picture but nothing else. Does anyone
have any info? I imagine it was a home for children whose parents couldn't
care for them but was it an adoption centre, just temporary care or
something like CAS?

TIA.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Portuguese Genealogy Conference deadline is 2 months away

2019-05-25 Thread Cheri Mello
Hi Bob L,

Maybe next time. When I negotiated with the hotel last fall, they didn't
have the availability for our group until June. So that's the dates I had
to pick. We try to have them about every 18 months or so, depending on the
availability of the host hotel. This was to have been our spring one. So
the next would be the late summer/early fall around late Aug/early Sept of
2020, depending on what is available at the Salt Lake Plaza Hotel. The
announcement for the dates will be around Feb/March of next year. Cheri

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Maria de Jesus(wife of Francisco de Pimentel)S.Sebastiao in Ponta Delgada OR from SM-Vila Franca?

2019-05-25 Thread Margaret Vicente
Terri,

The record states the different dates and places of baptism for the Joao and
Maria, who were both Expostos; Joao on Mar 9th 1834 baptized same day in
Candelaria. Maria baptized in Sao Sebastiao de Ponta Delgada … days of of the
month of January of 1844.

The document is a legitimization record for these two exposto children on their
father’s deatch bed as declared in the hour of his death recognizing them and
marrying/receiving their Mother ……… marriage … book 8 of this Parish pages 113….

It also goes to say the mother also recognized them as her own children…

Record signed and dated June 11 1845

2019-05-25 Thread Ângela Loura
Hi Terri,

What makes you assume that this exposta is the Maria de Jesus you are
looking for?
My guess is, either you found diferent Marias, or her death records that
she was 53 years old, «pouco mais ou menos», meaning she could be older
than 53.

Please post the marriage and death record as Cheri asked, so we can take
better conclusions to help you.

In the baptism record I found below i found that she was from Sao Sebastiao

Can anyone share some clarity to what might be going on here.
