Hi Eliseu,

I found the other sisters, the daughters of Luzia Ledo..also two sons.

Mary Conceicas married Charles Mello, of Sao Miguel. They lived in Cambridge
Massachusetts. She died in 1973, she had two children.

Mary dos Anjes married Arthur Silva Fairterceiro of Sao Miguel. They lived in
Cambridge, Massachusetts. She died in 1971, she had seven children

Angelo, a son, remained in Sao Miguel. He was alive in the 1970s, when his
sister Mercedes came to visit. I do not know when he passed away.

Joseph, a son, was in the U.S, living in Fall River Massachusetts. He died
before 1973, I do not know exactly when.

Mercedes I have noted before, she is my great grandmother.

Luzia, or Louise, married John Alessi and had four children, and lived in
Boston. She died in 2000.

thank you again for all of your help.

Assunto: [AZORES-Genealogy] Menezes genealogy, Sao Miguel

Hi all,

New to list - my ggrandfather Jose da Costa Menezes was born 1900 in Ribeira
Grande and emigrated to America between 1916 and 1918. Once in Massachusetts,
he married his cousin, Maria das Merces. She was also from Ribeira Grande,
born in 1903 or 1904. Her father was Jose da Costa. Her mother, I believe,
was named Luzia Ledo. She arrived in New York in 1919 with her father (who had
been in America for 12 years, the story handed down is that he returned to get
his daughters after their mother died from the Spanish flu). The sisters were
Maria Conceicao, Maria des Anjes, and Luzia. They left behind a brother,
Angelo Costa Menezes. Waiting for them in Fall River was Jose da Costa's
brother, Gabriel da Costa. Jose Menezes and Maria Merces, or Mercedes as we
know her, were married in New Bedford in 1923. They moved to Cambridge, MA by
1924, where they had a number of children. Jose Menezes, or Joseph, died in
1972, Mercedes in 1983.

I have combed the baptisms looking for Jose Menezes - his dob is 9/16/1900 -
but did not find him. Mercedes is a bit more complicated as the date of birth
I have for her is 1902, which we know was not true, but was stated to make her
older so she could work. (this caused her a problem when she tried to get
Social Security). I believe it was resolved as 1903, but her Massachusetts
Death Index dob is 1904. I will have to check both years. The date is 5/28.

I'm looking for any confirmation on these families...

thank you! Kerry Sullivan

2017-09-02 Thread kerrysullivan67
An update here - I have located one of the sisters that I mentioned below.
Maria Conceicas married Charles Mello and also, along with her sister
Mercedes, moved to Cambridge. Mary, as she was known, died in 1973 in
Cambridge, Massachusetts. They had two children, Anthony and Alice. Also,
to add to the Menezes/Ledo children below, I believe there was also a son,
Angelo, who remained in Ribeira Grande. This is according to the
immigration paper that lists the contact remaining in the country of
origin. I have just unearthed a photo of Mercedes' trip to Ribeira Grande
in the 1970s, and it is her with, I believe, Angelo.

Latin helps. Or even any of the Romance languages (Spanish, Italian,
French). All verbs have a conjugation pattern. The adjective is after the
noun. Nouns have genders. You just learn that son is "filho" instead of
"hijo" from high school Spanish. Even those who weren't required to take a
foreign languagethe documents follow a format. You learn the format and
few keywords. With some perseverance, it can be done!

The children, as I know them, of Jose da Costa and Luzia Ledo were: (I
located this on both passenger lists and the outgoing passport lists on the

Maria de Conceicas Menezes, born about 1895

Maria de Merces Ledo Menezes, born 5/28/1903 (I think, there is some
question about the year of her birth, but it's between 1902 and 1905)
Luzia Agueda Ledo Menezes, born about 1906.

I am still trying to find out what happened to the other sisters after they
arrived in the U.S. in December of 1919. They landed in New Bedford; Maria
de Merces, or Mercedes as she was called, married her cousin Jose da Costa
Menezes (son of Alberto da Costa Menezes in 1920. They moved to Cambridge,

2017-02-23 Thread Cheri Mello
Kerry, you are not part of the Azores DNA project on FTDNA. When you say
you had your "maternal" DNA, I don't know what you are referring to.
There's no "maternal" DNA test on the market with any DNA testing company.
There's a mitochondrial DNA test (mtDNA) that tests your mother's mother's
mother's line (bottom of your pedigree), but those tests don't say you are
Portuguese and German. It would tell you that you are Haplogroup Something
(a letter). And that the migration path for the haplogroup came out of
Africa went up the the Middle East, made a left and went and populated
Europe. This is anthropology stuff, way before countries and political
boundaries ever existed. So there's no way to say Portugal and Germany.

Yes, the were Flemish in the Azores. English too. But this is not in the
mtDNA test. You need to join your results to the Azores DNA project on
FTDNA so I can figure out what you are trying to explain.

Thank you so much! First of anything I have ever seen on them. (I have
been distracted on other lines since I wrote this) Family tradition has it
that Luzia died in the flu epidemic. My grandmother was named for her.

Out of interest, I had my maternal DNA done (my Azorean side) and it came
out Portuguese and German..I think I have seen something somewhere about a
colony of Dutch settlers from Flanders on Sao Miguel, is this correct, does
anyone know?

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Menezes genealogy, Sao Miguel

2016-08-21 Thread Cheri Mello
Kerry,
Sounds like you have enough information to start.

Sometimes the stated birth date was their baptism date. Sometimes they were
off by a few days. Sometimes they were confused on the year, so look a
couple of years ahead or behind the date.

Also, Ribeira Grande has 2 churches. That is, if they are from Ribeira
Grande proper. They could be saying Ribeira Grande here, but really be from
a smaller freguesia. If I was from Honey Creek, Nebraska, I'd probably just
say Omaha, because people outside of NE would have heard of Omaha more so
than Honey Creek.

You can verify the freguesia by finding your people on the Passaportes
outbound from the Azores on the CCA.
Good luck,
