Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Williams from Faial
Cheri and Shervoy, You are most likely correct, Frank did come over on a whaler. You might try the Whaling Museum in New Bedford next time you are in the area. To try and research Faial records looking for a Francis/Francisco b. abt. 1840 with parents Joseph Francis and Antonia but without a parish is like looking for a needle in a haystack. Best bet - someone who has already researched this family. I will keep looking though to see if I can find a ship's manifest. I found one I was recently looking for in 1860's. Moses Howe, clergyman, New Bedford was already 80 years old in 1870 census, so he was 85 when they married. He had been a clergyman at Seaman's Bethel 1843-1858. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Williams from Faial
I thought this is him but it says he was from US??? There is more than 1 Frank Williams in the area and I think, of these, one was a mariner and one was a farmer and one settled in Wellfleet (mariner) and one in Lakeville (farmer). Since several used the Williams surname could their surname have been Wilhelm (I think Portuguese for William??? or some such variation???) Frank Williams, 30, mariner, bark Evarista, sailing from Fayal, arriving Boston July 5, 1866. There is another, Frank Williams, 28, mariner, who I think is same as above sailing from Fayal on Barque Azor Oct. 1862 and it also listed from US. I also found these Frank Williams: Frank Williams, 33, sailing from Flores, Azores, farmer, arriving Boston Aug. 27, 1870 aboard the brig Oriana. Frank Williams, 30, laborer, sailing from Sao Miguel (St. Michael) arriving Boston July 14, 1873 on bark Armizade. PS: I also found Frank and Mary Ann living in Lakeville in the 1880 census. E I know ages don't quite match but we all know how these can fluctuate. E -- To unsubscribe from this group, send email to azores+unsubscr...@googlegroups.com. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Williams from Faial
Shervoy is on the list. But the postings from this person have 2 Re: in them, so it breaks the thread. They get caught in the queue so I need to repost them. It's always best to leave the subject alone, just hit reply, and type away. From Shervoy: I looked at the Whaling Museum's site, and he was not listed among the crews of the 3 trips the Kate Cory made to Faial. Therefore, I suspect that he signed onto a different ship in Faial, and somewhere along the line, signed onto the Kate Cory. He was on that ship when it was confiscated by the U.S. Navy during the Civil War, and it was burned by the Confederate ship The Alabama. The seamen were put ashore on the coast of Brazil. -- To unsubscribe from this group, send email to azores+unsubscr...@googlegroups.com. Follow the confirmation directions when they arrive. RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Williams from Faial
Thank you so very much; this is very helpful. He signed on to the Brig Kate Cory, a whaler, at an early age. The ship was confiscated by the U.S. Navy during the Civil War, burned by the Alabama, a Confederate ship, and the seamen were put ashore on the coast of Brazil. From there, he somehow got to the United States, and eventually married a Civil War widow. They were married in New Bedford, Massachusetts. Therefore, there is no parish to explore. I am going to make a trip to New Bedford to look at old records to see if I can decipher his parents' surnames. Thank you again. -Original Message- From: azores@googlegroups.com [mailto:azores@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Dano Sent: Wednesday, May 11, 2011 1:01 AM To: Azores Genealogy Subject: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Williams from Faial Fayal was the second largest port in the Azores. As such, it saw many foreign ships, including whalers and fishing vessels that would often stop to sign up crew replacements. So, the short answer to your question is, yes, a native of the Azores can have the surname Williams. Often surnames became remastered to make them sound more Portuguese or more English. Major settlement of the Azores was, of course, by Portuguese nobility, who were offered land and power to colonize the newly discovered islands in the 15th century. Shortly after they were joined by Flemish expatriates under an agreement by the respective kings of Portugal and France. Owing to the history of the islands, persons from Scotland, France, Italy, and Spain, were also permitted to settle in the islands from time to time. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Williams from Faial
Shevory, Maybe you should scan the record and send it to the list (attach it to your email). It's been many years, but if I remember correctly, Danielle Steel is a quarter Portuguese. She had someone come from England (surname Stone) and I think the records in the Azores named the descendants Manuel Stone da Silva (I made that upbut it was Portuguese first name, Stone, then Portuguese last name). I think it would be best to send the record to the list. Thank you, Kathy, George Williams 35 mariner b. Fayal, W.I. (no parents listed) and Hannah Higgins 25 married in Wellfleet MA Nov. 10, 1854 by George Denham, Cleryman. Actual record is listed on www.familysearch.org This one will be difficult as no parents are listed on marriage record. I would try and see if you can get a copy of the form they filled out to get the marriage license and hope it might have this info. What info do you have that he died ca 1857? I notice on Ancestry there is a George Williams and Hannah Higgins family tree (Clark). I found Hannah and her 2 sons on 1860 census. I also found George Williams in 1860 census b.
