[BackupPC-users] add rsync -A -X and get 'Got fatal error during xfer (fileListReceive failed)'
I am trying to add acl file permissions and attr to rsync in "RsyncArgs" and "RsyncRestoreArgs" and have discovered that their addition is not that easy. When backups are run the log files contains: "Got fatal error during xfer (fileListReceive failed)". Removing the "-A" and the "-X" allows the backup to proceed without errors. Holger, thanks for your reply. I'll will be running some troubleshooting commands with the rsync "-A" and "-X" options to see what happens. I have not taken the time to read up on "File::RsyncP", yet. Plan to do that this weekend. You insight is a big help. I went away from this and now I am back. Stephen, your link returns a "404." Could you check it, please. And, it has been so long since I installed from a tar.gz file that I have gone brain dead. I have found most of the perl dependencies and I think I have them covered but, the installation of the backuppc-4.0.0alpha3.tar.gz goes very quickly and I am struggling with what directories hold what . . . would you happen to have any notes from when you did yours that you might like share with all of us? I'd really like to get a Backuppc-4.0.0 machine that will backup my Samba4 member server ACL and xattr file permissions. Any information would be greatly appreciated. [BackupPC-users] following directories are bogus
I am receiving this email: The following directories are bogus and are not being used by BackupPC. This typically happens when PCs are removed from the backup list. If you don't need any old backups from these PCs you should remove these directories. If there are machines on this list that should be backed up then there is a problem with the hosts file: - /var/lib/backuppc/pc/192.168.***.119 Regards, PC Backup Genie This was a 'test' host and the host was removed, weeks ago. I assumed that BackupPC (v3.3.0) would eventually remove the bogus directory. Searching the 'net' results in some very old ways of removing this directory. In the past I simply "rm -rf /var/lib/backuppc/pc/192.168.***.119" but I have read that it does not work properly. Re: [BackupPC-users] following directories are bogus
Okay, I might have handled that incorrectly . . . the "***" (triple asterisk signs) were to obscure the ip address on the mailing list only. That is NOT the ip address my server is using for a client. Sorry for confusion. I found my "old" BackupPC notes book and in it found a mailing list post from 2009 that instructions to "rm -rf /var/lib/backuppc/pc/[hostname]" and that "BackupPC Nightly" will take care of the rest. I have decided to give that a go and see what happens. --- ___ Bob Wooden of Donelson Trophy 615.885.2846 www.donelsontrophy.com [1] "Everyone deserves an award!!" [BackupPC-users] help installing BackupPC4.0.0alpha3.tar.gz
I know this is a very general request but, I have been trying to install BackupPC4.0.0alpha3.tar,gz on Ubuntu 14.04.2 LTS. Re: [BackupPC-users] help installing BackupPC4.0.0alpha3.tar.gz
Thanks for the reply, David. I have thought about switching distro to CentOS. I have seen other mailing posts that mention the use of it and have some experience with CentOS. (Not that I am against Ubuntu or Debian, they are my primary distros . . . no offense, anyone.) I do not have a problem with untarring, etc. My main issue is where to place what. There is an "html-dir" directory that I am not sure where to put it (i.e. /usr/share/backuppc/html or somewhere in Apache2?) And so I cannot get the URL to allow access via the webpage (http://[ip address]/backuppc.)And then the permissions required for backuppc user to access the cgi-bin files? Could I see a copy (sanitized, if you like) of your configure.pl file? Where you chose to place various directories might help me figure out what I am doing wrong. --- ___ Bob Wooden of Donelson Trophy 615.885.2846 www.donelsontrophy.com [2] "Everyone deserves an award!!" Re: [BackupPC-users] help installing BackupPC4.0.0alpha3.tar.gz
(Sorry, David. 'Hit' reply instead of "reply-all". So your getting a duplicate.) Yes, I am following the steps below. However the "./configure.sh --prefix option" suggestion to add to the rsync-bpc, I did not do as running "./configure.sh" reports that is has installed in /usr/local/bin by default. Keywords in that suggestion sentence are "default might be . . .". Also, your config.pl file is very much identical to mine except I have not yet installed samba. I am having trouble getting backuppc to run manually (have not activated the init.d script, yet.) I am struggling with file permissions and will not get back to post any specific questions until late this afternoon or tomorrow. Good news! Got BackupPC 4.0.0 to run!! I had a permissions issue with /data, my data (storage) directory. When I 'chown' to backuppc user, and ran "sudo -u backuppc /usr/local/BackupPC/bin/BackupPC -d" BackupPC started . . . yeah!! (Now I can go look at logfiles.) Now, I think I have an Apache permissions issue as when I use my browser to access the [ip address]/BackupPC I get nothing but, when I try [ip address]/backuppc I get the directory that contains all the *.gif files and other. Having trouble finding instruction regarding how to setup CGI access for Apache on CentOS 7. Most of the instructions I am finding are for older versions. Any of those changes break httpd . . . so I remove that to return to functionality. With 'Links' installed, I can run the su -u backuppc /var/www/cgi-bin/BackupPC_Admin and the webpage appears on the sverver machine (via ssh) itself. So, the cgi-bin file is functional. David, I have placed your "checkTempFs" file but it appears to not be running on restart. What directory did you place your "checkTempFs" file in? What file permissions does "checkTempFs" need? Yes, when I run them manually they do solve the problem. I understand that "checkTempFs" script that is run by what user? root? And if I understand what your saying, inserting "checkTempFs" into the /etc/init.d/backuppc startup script. But, I am confused as to where /etc/init.d/backuppc "looks" for the script to run it on start up? (FYI, my OS is a CentOS 7, like yours, I believe. Re: [BackupPC-users] help installing BackupPC4.0.0alpha3.tar.gz
EUREKA! After initiating your init.d script and a restart of the machine, I access the webgui via the ipaddress on my browser and it was complaining (across the top of the page) that "Error: Unable to connect to BackupPC server". Checked permissions on the /data/BackupPC/ files and they were the same. Scratched my head and Googled the error message. One of the post mentioned selinux. Checked my selinux and reset to "permissive" (with "setenforce 0") and restarted backuppc and httpd and tried the webgui, again . . . EUREKA Looks just like the BackupPC 3.3.* version I am use to! Thank you, thank you, thank you David Cramblett I had not done a tar install in about ten years and had forgotten everything. [BackupPC-users] BackupPC 4.0 --acls question
I have a functional BackupPC 4.0.0alpha3 running on CentOS 7. I have one client that is my Samba4 fileserver running Debian 7.8.0 with (Sernet)Samba 4.2.3 that is handling ACL and xattr file attributes of my W7 clients. So, acl and xattr are setup on that machine. I am currently backup (with BPC4) other linux clients without issue. I have set "RsyncArgsExtra" for "--acls" and "--xattrs" as instructed by the wiki. To add some info that may or may not help . . . The Samba4 fileserver uses 'ext4' file structure. (If that matters.) The "other linux clients" do not backup 'acls' or 'xattr' attributes. And I found a bug report (3828) at https://bugzilla.samba.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3828 from 2006 referencing rsync version 2.6.8 and how "_That warning means that rsync was patched with ACL support but not configured with it enabled. I have been using BackupPC for years on an Ubuntu/Debian OS. I am switching to CentOS 7 and cannot figure out why I am getting the following: FORBIDDEN You don't have permission to access /BackupPC on this server. . . . . when I "http://[ipaddress]/BackupPC"; I have disabled selinux and firewalld to see if they are interfering with my access. They do not appear to be. (So, I re-enabled them.) I can access "http://[ipaddress]"; and get the default CentOS webpage. To install BackupPC I enabled the EPEL repository. I really do not want to talk about top posting and the all the reasons I have little choice in the matter . . . please. Regarding my permissions issue. I have really begun to think that CentOS 7 is a little too new for this particular installation. I am still learning about selinux and it's benefits but, I do not have time to wait much longer. So I have decided to start again with CentOS 6.7. I need this machine to be backing up. And I think I will find a solution and upgrade instructions (to CentOS 7) before 2020 when CentOS 6.7 is end of life. There is plenty of instructions to get C6.7 and BPC3.3.1 running. Re: [BackupPC-users] Forbidden You don't have permission to access /BackupPC on this server.
I just finished installing C6.7 and BackuppPC 3.3.1. It went like a charm. Getting ready to take the machine to it's final home. I am not complaining but the documentation always lags (with any distro) and the issues I was having with C7 are most likely related to the newer systemd, selinux or both. I just do not have time to research and find the answers. My old BackupPC machine died and I needed this one machine running ASAP. Like I said 2020 is end of life for C6.7. By next year this time, I'll probably find the upgrade info I need. I love linux. I always get it to work for me, eventually. (Sorry, I top posted again!! Re: [BackupPC-users] Forbidden You don't have permission to access /BackupPC on this server.
Les, What I was trying to say (and not very well) is that I was having trouble finding the answers I needed. I had to get the backup server up and running so I abandon the C7 version and reverted to C6.7 hoping someday there will be a simple upgrade soon . . . as in next year or maybe the year after. And you may be correct. I remember reading somewhere that one of the issues Apache 2.4 handles differently than Apache 2.2 is external access. And I searched for that information again and could not find it. (Bottom line, C6.7 is running and I have moved on.) Thanks for your suggestion. The apache log said the configuration prevented the client from having access - and only the part of the config that applied to apache 2.2 was changed to allow access from remote clients. First, I have trimmed out the irrelevant rhetoric. To the nicer people on this list, with your help, I have moved on. If you read all the threads of my original post, Stefan Peter was the first to get way off topic. Then, whether appropriate or not, Holger Parplies uses this off topic post to start one of his rants. Holger, you have chastised me before and I let it go. This is the BackupPC-users mailing list and I am a user of BackupPC and have been for years. I, as a user, ask questions just like any other user posting to this list. In the future, I will be back. Holger, you have berated many via this list. You should be ashamed of your behavior. I have noticed this fact, it is always late in the day here (in the USA) which is late night in Europe when you post one of your rants . . . . there is treatment for your condition. Get some help. Re: [BackupPC-users] Status on new BackupPC v4
I could be completely wrong but, I have v4.0alpha and v3.31(?) running on two different machines and both are just doing their job. Backing up clients at their locations. Backuppc (IMO) has always been a simple frontend for rsync with some scripts that guide rsync (and other programs) to store backups. At this moment, those scripts are working fine with the current versions of rsync (and all the other programs (MySQL, LAMP stack, etc.) needed to make Backuppc work.) All these other programs are independent of Backuppc and until those scripts (that essentially are Backuppc) fail, we the users have little to fear . . . not trying to start any fear and doubt . . . otherwise known as FUD. Today, there are thousands of Backuppc machines running everywhere. Someday, when the need arises, someone will pickup the banner and run with it. Post the fix to whatever script needs a line change and we the users will continue to enjoy the benefits. Just my two cents . . . (but, if someone out there is thinking of picking up the banner . . . think about ACL's . . . to me this appears to be the next needed step, that was started by Craig with v4.0 that currently does not work.) See there is a need, now!! --- ___ Bob Wooden of Donelson Trophy 615.885.2846 www.donelsontrophy.com [5] "Everyone deserves an award!!" Thanks for the response, Brad. I need to clarify that I can backup other hosts just NOT the localhost and I am confused as to why I cannot. I see, by your "backup command" that your using rsync. Is this the command to backup your localhost? I just tried ssh-ing into the locahost (first time I can remember that experience) and it worked. Re-ran my test command "sudo -u backuppc /usr/share/backuppc/bin/BackupPC_dump -v -f localhost" and got the same "Backup aborted (No files dumped for share /)" and "Can't cd to /root: Permission denied". Did you change the RsyncClientRestoreCmd in the same manner? Using 2 layers of ssh forwarding is clever, but it is only necessary if you can't route directly to the client. That is, if your 2 subnets have unique IP addresses and the VPN link handles routing (including the route back from the client), you don't need to do anything different from your remote server. Thanks Les. I am currently testing backing up one client machine from the other end of the vpn. I used the client machines ipaddress instead of it's hostname. The ssh key was copied and the backup began as expected. So, the different ip subnet did not matter to the backuppc machine. (First time I had ever tried backing up thru the vpn.) I also expected the backup to be slower thru the vpn than the local backuppc machine there and it appears to be that, slower. I figured, for now, keep it simple and just try this and see what happens. When the backup completes I will compare the two backuppc machine client data. I'm looking for redundancy with two backups per client machine in two different geographical locations, one local lan and the other at my house (other end of vpn.) Backup has been running about three hours now. Like you said, the two subnets are well translated by the vpn link. As far as his "string", I'm still studying what the "options" mean and might his way be a faster backup method or not. These are only thoughts at this point. (First my apologizes, my webmail client has a glitch. Not a story for this mailing list but my reply will look like an extension of the previous message and can cause confusion during reading . . . you'll see what I mean if the "glitch" happens.) Thanks for the info, Les. I backed up a small Active Directory Domain Controller (Samba4). It is about 5Gb in size and (full) backed up in about an hour. Slower than the local Backuppc but, not a lot slower. Then I started the backup of one of the ADDC member file servers . . . about 250Gb (I think) . . . Backuppc (thru vpn) has been running now for about 21 hours for this first, full backup. This backup took about five or six hours locally. I'm guessing it will finish soon . . . I hope. This idea of doing the initial backup (of the second machine) on the local lan and then moving it to the second location, I do not see this as very practical. Every week (6.97 days) Backuppc does a full backup, does this mean I need to move the machine every 6.97 days to the local lan? Surely there is some compression options that could be put in place to better stream the data thru the vpn and improve the backup speed? So I add "-C" to the "RsyncClientCmd sshpath" or "RsyncArgs"? Aren't the "-q -x -l" default options in the "RsyncClientCmd sshpath" ssh options? [BackupPC-users] version 4 gif files only
This is a BackupPC version 4 question. Attention Johan Ehnberg (author of "Installing BackupPC 4 from git on Ubuntu Xenial 16.04 LTS" script.) I have a VM running Ubuntu 16.04.1LTS and decided to try the script posted at https://github.com/backuppc/backuppc/wiki/Installing-BackupPC-4-from-git-on-Ubuntu-Xenial-16.04-LTS. Install appeared to process correctly. When I access the //[ip address]/BackupPC I get a list of mostly *.gif files. (Clearly the graphics 'pieces' that make the web interface.) I believe this may be a permissions issue. [BackupPC-users] cannot "su - backuppc" after script
I have been experimenting with the script originally submitted by Johan Ehnberg (thank you, BTW) to build on a VM (Virtualbox). As BackupPC has been updated to 4.1.0 and the script (I believe) pulls the latest from github I have rerun the script to test the newer BackupPC version. With each VM (version 4.0.0 and now 4.1.0?) I am unable to access the "su - backuppc" via commandline in order to "ssh-copy-id" keys to the clients. Any attempt to "su - backuppc" simply returns to the 'root' user prompt as opposed to the 'backuppc' "$" prompt. I have even backed out of the 'root' user to the admin user and tried "sudo su - backuppc" with the same result, a return to the admin user prompt. Is there a different way I am to backuppc user login to "ssh-copy-id" with the newer BackupPC 4 version? Perhaps you should also consider an upgrade script? Myself, I have begun using stable tarball versions of software in place of distro version packages. Some distro software versions packages lag too far behind the releases. This ties to how quickly the package development is advancing. In the last few months, now that Craig has time, things have moved very quickly. If this pace keeps up, IMHO, stable tarball is the way to go. But, that's me. [BackupPC-users] back to ssh class, I guess
I now have a functional VM running Ubuntu 16.04LTS and BackupPC 4.0 (from the master) source. I have "su - backuppc -s /bin/sh" and acquired the "$" prompt. Generated the keys with "ssh-keygen". Now when I: $ ssh-copy-id root at client ipaddress<<< sanitized for security /usr/bin/ssh-copy-id: INFO: Source of key(s) to be installed: "/var/lib/backuppc/.ssh/id_rsa.pub" /usr/bin/ssh-copy-id: INFO: attempting to log in with the new key(s), to filter out any that are already installed /usr/bin/ssh-copy-id: INFO: 1 key(s) remain to be installed -- if you are prompted now it is to install the new keys Permission denied (publickey, password). I have not had a chance to search why, yet. This works fine with a repo install of BackupPC v3.3.1 on Ubuntu (has been my experience) so, my guess is the repo package dependencies takes care of what is causing this. I know that by default Ubuntu does not allow root ssh access therefore it leads me to believe that the "packaging" sets the ssh access rights to allow the "copy" to work. How is the old version (v3.3.1) getting around this by not manually adjusting the /etc/ssh/ssh_config of each client to allow root logins? So, to potentially help someone else with the same problem, I pose the question here. Thank you for that. I have been researching signing into the web gui. Even before I upgraded to v4.1.1 I was having resistance to signing in with the backuppc user with the htpasswd I have set up. I mentioned in a previous email that the backuppc user appears in the /etc/BackupPC/apache.users file, as it should. But, When I sign into the [ipaddress]/BackupPC it gives an "Internal Server Error". If I modify the /etc/httpd/conf.d/BackupPC.conf file and add "Require all granted" and comment out the "Require valid-user" I can access the gui however, I cannot do much of anything. Hum-m-m-m?? To Tim, I changed the user and group to "backuppc" and noticed this. The first login asked for the user and password. The second and every logion after that automatically logged in, no request for user and password. Odd . . . so I reset the user and group back to apache. I also noticed that when I modify the /etc/httpd/conf.d/BackupPC.conf to allow "Require all granted" it always logs in with asking for user and password. The last thing I noticed is in both cases the navigation menu (on the left side under "SERVER") contains only five entries. Status, Host Summary, Documentation, Wiki, Github are listed entries. Compared to my v3 box, missing are Edit Config, Edit Hosts, Admin Options, LOG File, Old LOGs, Email Summary, Current Queues, and Sourceforge (which I think is only there because it's v3.) This leads me to believe apache is "seeing" the incorrect permissions for the backuppc user, for that matter, any user and is not allowing admin access. Therefore it comes back to a permissions issue. Perhaps this info will help Richard or anyone else to guide me to an operational v4? -- ___ Bob Wooden of Donelson Trophy-- Check out the vibrant tech community on one of the world's most engaging tech sites, Slashdot.org! http://sdm.link/slashdot___ BackupPC-users mailing list BackupPC-users@lists.sourceforge.net List:https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/backuppc-users Wiki:http://backuppc.wiki.sourceforge.net Project: http://backuppc.sourceforge.net/

The first login attempt and I received the appropriate login box, entered user name and passwd but still only five (5) entires in navigation menu. Logoff, close browser tab, start new tab, enter backuppc ipaddress and just login, no request for user name or passwd. Thanks for your suggestions, Adam. These match (in the CentOS way) to what I was seeing on Ubuntu running v3.3.1. I still think it is a permissions issue. -- ___ Bob Wooden of Donelson Trophy-- Check out the vibrant tech community on one of the world's most engaging tech sites, Slashdot.org! http://sdm.link/slashdot___ BackupPC-users mailing list BackupPC-users@lists.sourceforge.net List:https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/backuppc-users Wiki:http://backuppc.wiki.sourceforge.net Project: http://backuppc.sourceforge.net/

Perhaps I missed something . . . what is being said here is that with version31 ACL and xattr are on by defaults? Or, do they (ACL and xattr) still need to be added via 'RsyncArgsExtra'? -- ___ Bob Wooden of Donelson Trophy-- Check out the vibrant tech community on one of the world's most engaging tech sites, Slashdot.org! http://sdm.link/slashdot___ BackupPC-users mailing list BackupPC-users@lists.sourceforge.net List:https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/backuppc-users Wiki:http://backuppc.wiki.sourceforge.net Project: http://backuppc.sourceforge.net/
[BackupPC-users] acls and xattrs attributes
Over two years ago I discovered that BackupPC v3 will not backup acl and xattr file attributes. At that time, it was suggested to try v4 (had just been released as beta(?), I think) and I did get an OS to run v4.0. It (v4.0) backups failed when "acls" and "xattrs" RsyncArgsExtra where activated. So, I worked out a simple alternative for the time being with rsync. Now, let me explain my need. I have a Samba4 active directory setup with one machine acting as a member server that carries the redirected files from all the W workstations. This active directory requires the use of acls and xattrs file attributes. Enter BackupPC v4.1.2 (now.) I have created a test rig to test bpc4 and it is backing up the active directory setup. Both domain controllers (these machines do NOT incorporate the use of "acls" and "xattrs" attributes) backup just fine. The member server (a file server), on the other hand, has acls and xattrs attributes activated on the /home directory but, will not backup the /home directory. All other directories are being backed up from the member server. When I set "RsyncArgsExtra" to include "acls" and "xattrs" the machine backups up but the /home backup is empty. I have disabled one, then the other and finally both to see if BackupPC will backup the /home in any fashion, the /home directory remains empty. A brief explanation of "acls" and "xattrs" settings on a member server. Only directories under /home have had any adjustments to these file attributes by the domain administrators. User files with in the subdirectories are adjusted to meet the needs of users on the workstations. Therefore, it is my belief that this is the reason BackupPC v4.1.2 will not back up anything under the /home directory. I have checked Rsync backups and they include these file attribute settings. So my question (finally) is this, if Rsync (on Ubuntu 16.04LTS uses Rsync 3.1.1-3ubuntu1) works with "acls" and "xattrs", why doesn't Rsync_bpc?
