When I got started with Bacula a year ago I started from the online manual
(http://www.bacula.org/rel-manual/index.html). I read almost all of it and to
me it was enough to get experimenting and configuring Bacula.

But I agree that it's a good idea to have a wiki with sample configurations
etc.

[Bacula-users] cancel job: job not found

2007-04-17 Thread Silver Salonen
Hi.

I'm using Bacula 2.0.1 on FreeBSD-4.9.

In console status dir:
=
Running Jobs:
 JobId Level   Name   Status
==
  7617 Fullrakvere.2007-04-17_11.29.52 is waiting for Client rakvere-fd to
connect to Storage storage-rakvere
  7618 Fullpaide.2007-04-17_11.34.35 is waiting for Client paide-fd to
connect to Storage storage-paide
=

They've been hanging there for 4 hours now, so I wanted to just cancel them.

In console cancel jobid=7617:
=
3904 Job rakvere.2007-04-17_11.29.52 not found.
=

cancel jobid=7618:
=
3904 Job paide.2007-04-17_11.34.35 not found.
=

After a while they still got cancelled, so these error messages were a little
misleading.

A bug?

 Please don't.

  A forum would keep inboxes from becoming cluttered, and represents a

 their standard mail readers which usually are not web browsers.
Now The Guru has signed off the mailing list..

  verified belief is that newbies presented with a choice of forum

 You are probably right. That's because they don't know it better.
 Most experts decide the other way.
Why?
When I learned the little Bacula that I know I tried, but found it impossible
to do any meaningful searches in the list archives. It did not help that they
are occasionally offline.

I read the book (manual), but the end result is that the few things that I did
not find in the book or misunderstood, had to be helped out by Kern on the
maillinglist.

This experience is in contrast to other opensource worlds, where most often a
search in a forum reveals the answer that has usually already been given
once.

There is a huge difference between good and bad forum software - in the good
ones it is very easy to survey the topics, see which issues are unsolved or
even unanswered - add sticky notes, and thus you can keep in touch in a short
time compared to being signed up to a maillinglist.

[Bacula-users] Serious restore problem

2007-04-17 Thread Johan Ehnberg
(This is the second post of Volume data error. I am stuck trying to
figure this out.)

Hello mailinglist!

I am happily running bacula 1.36.2 on debian sarge for two years now.
One client is a Windows 2000 MVS NT 5.0.2195. I am getting the following
errors during a restore job to create a monthly snapshot of its backup.
The job worked well until this month.

What is going wrong? Can it be similar to this one:
http://www.mail-archive.com/bacula-users@lists.sourceforge.net/msg20622.html

The following facts are of interest:
- Error is always the same (same address, checksums and block), although
the volume can be different and there have been Full backups in between
tries.
- The backup is successful
- Other large restore jobs work well from the same disk
- No I/O errors on either FD or SD, scandisk shows no errors on client
- Same error when running 'restore all' or bextract
- The restore client FD is on the server
- Communications run over stunnel and filesets are GZIPped
- Storage is a file on a md RAID1
- Disks are two Maxtor 6B300S0
- Controller is a Silicon Image, Inc. SiI 3114 [SATALink/SATARaid]

The error in bacula:
13-Apr 17:46 SERVER-sd: CLIENT-snapshot.2007-04-13_17.46.00 Error:
block.c:304 Volume data error at 0:383349411! Block checksum mismatch in
block 5715: calc=4d849bb9 blk=5b9137bf

The error with bextract -p and the most recent bootstrap:
13-Apr 18:27 bextract: Ready to read from volume
CLIENT-backup-2006-06-26 on device /opt/bacula1/CLIENT.
13-Apr 18:27 bextract: bextract Error: block.c:304 Volume data error at

13-Apr 18:30 bextract: End of Volume at file 2 on device
/opt/bacula1/CLIENT, Volume CLIENT-backup-2006-06-26
13-Apr 18:30 bextract: End of all volumes.
13-Apr 18:30 bextract: bextract Error: 39 block read errors not printed.
4158 files restored.

An upgrade to debian etch is imminent, along with bacula 2.0.3. If this
is a bug or missing feature in this older version, a hint is appreciated
to get my partner pull the switch.

The restore job:
Job {
Name = CLIENT-snapshot
Type = Restore
Client = SERVER-fd
Fileset = CLIENT-set
Storage = CLIENT-storage
Schedule = CLIENT-snapshot-schedule
Priority = 8
Pool = Default
Messages = Standard
Where = /tmp/CLIENT-snapshot
Bootstrap = /var/lib/bacula/CLIENT.bsr
ClientRunAfterJob = /etc/bacula/CLIENT-snapshot
}

The backup job:
Job {
Name = CLIENT-backup
Client = CLIENT-fd
FileSet = CLIENT-set
Storage = CLIENT-storage
Write Bootstrap = /var/lib/bacula/CLIENT.bsr
Type = Backup
Level = Incremental
Schedule = weekly-cycle1
Messages = Standard
Pool = Default
Priority = 6
}

Help is appreciated.

Best regards,
Johan

[Bacula-users] Autochanger in IBM TS3310

2007-04-17 Thread Mariusz Czulada
Hello,

I'm preparing the installation of bacula on a server which is connected
to TS3310 library. At this moment I have some problems with autochanger.
I can use an IBMtapeutil - IBM tool for library (tape/changer)
management. Unfortunately it is not compatible with mtx.

I'd like to ask if someone uses/used this library with bacula and can
give me some hins or suggesions. For now I suppose I'll have to rewrite
'mtx-changer' as a wrapper around IBMtapeutil, but perhaps there is a
simpler solution for this?

TIA,

Mariusz

I'm guessing here... but perhaps you could try a Verify job with
Level=DiskToCatalog? I'm not sure quite what the output will look
like or whether you can parse it, but it should compare the current
disk state to the state from a previous backup.

If fileset's options{} block has a verify=p, that would check only
the permission bits, and not hashes, modification times, etc. The
default is pin5, so permission changes (even if nothing else is
different) should result in some sort of reporting.

Other alternatives include pulling the data from the catalog with SQL
queries...

 Rex,

 If your tape drive lives on the same machine as the director, you can
 use the RunsOnClient=No directive to make the script run on the
 director, which will then run it against the tape drive.

 That was the problem I had trying to run scripts which accessed the
 tape drive, for some reason, the client won't run scripts that access
 the tape drive. My script is for scheduled ejection and injection of
 tapes. Added the runson bit and now it works like a charm.

  I see that there is a Mount Command directive, but it does not
seem to
  be called for my jobs. I am not sure if it will get called for Tape
  devices.

  I tried the following:

  Device {

Media Type = DLT
Device Type = Tape
Archive Device = Tape0
AutomaticMount = yes
AlwaysOpen = yes
RemovableMedia = yes
RandomAccess = no
Mount Command = init_dlt %a
  }

  My init_dlt.cmd file is in the same directory as the mtx-changer.cmd
  file and contains:

  @echo off
  SET MT=C:\Program Files\Bacula\bin\mt.exe
  %MT% -f %1 setblk 0
  %MT% -f %1 compression 1

  When I run a job, my init_dlt script does not get called. My script
  works if I just run it (I can tell because when I run it, the
  compression indicator lights up on the tape drive.) Any suggestions?

  Thanks,

   Great!

   Now you have to modify the mtx-changer.cmd script. This will make

[Bacula-users] Backup levels: Base, Since

2007-04-17 Thread Darien Hager
Mucking around with the console I noticed I could set the level of a
backup job to Base or Since. There is some mention of Base
backups as being vaporware as of 1.30 within the FAQ, but otherwise
the manual doesn't seem to have that much on these options.

Is Base is some sort of variation on a Full backup, and Since backs
up files added and changed after a specified date? I am able to
modify jobs to either of those, but I haven't actually run them since
I'm not entirely sure what'll happen.

[Bacula-users] Is there a way to pool tape drives?

2007-04-17 Thread Rex Wheeler
I have 3 stand alone DLT drives (no changers.) I would like to define a
backup job that can treat these drives as a pool and span across them.
Is this possible?

The reason I want this is that I have a backup job that will not fit on
one tape. I would like to put a tape in each drive and have bacula write
to the first tape and then write to the second tape as needed, without
operator intervention.

I was thinking about trying to lie to bacula and tell it that it has a
changer with multiple drives and no slots, but I don't know if that
would work?

Has anyone tried this or have any suggestions?

Thanks,

Rex

 I am having a very difficult time with win2k3 bacula-fd. If spooling
 takes more than 14 seconds, communication between the FD and SD breaks
 down and the backup job fails. The machines are all on a local network,
 there are no firewalls or routers other than WinXP pro where bacula-fd and
 its tcp port are allowed (and backup and restores work just fine for
 winXP pro FD).

 I have turned up debug level 200 and tracing on for the win2k3 FD. I have
 lots of trace data but I am not seeing any glaring problems. There does
 not seem to be much of a correlation between the error messages in the

 I'm guessing here... but perhaps you could try a Verify job with
 Level=DiskToCatalog?

Update: Nah, it seems it errors out on the first difference.

I may fiddle with pulling stuff from the DB, but another possibility
is to just restore the files to a seperate temporary location.

If space is tight, a script could and have a script periodically
cat /dev/null over the ones that are done being written... For example:
find /var/temprestore/ -type f -and -mmin +5 -and -size +1
Should list all normal files in the directory that were not modified
within the last five minutes and take up more than one block on the
disk as candidates for space-saving wiping during the restore process.

After that it should be possible to have a script iterate over all
the files in the temp directory, get their permission bits, and apply
them to the corresponding file in the real directory if it exists.

Re: [Bacula-users] appropriate data spool size for tape

2007-04-17 Thread John Stoffel

Dave I'm getting my Quantum Dlt 4000 going with bacula. I've
Dave included my definitions below and the job that i'm running. I'm
Dave not getting very good performance with the spool, the drive
Dave starts and stops quite frequently, it is on an Adaptec Ultrawide
Dave 2940 scsi controller. I was wondering the optimal size of a tape
Dave data spool?

I've got a single DLT7000 at home and I was running with a spool of
around 7gb and it made alot of difference. Being able to push the
incrementals totally to disk, then spool them off a tape speed
increased my capacity on the tapes, and I also don't hear nearly as
much shoe-shining when backups are running.

For the DLT4000, which only holds 20gb native, I'd say 5gb would be
fine. Of course if you have more space, then that's good too.

[Bacula-users] Job runs on wrong tape drive when overriding storage device

2007-04-17 Thread Rex Wheeler
I have a machine that has two DLT drives. While I can define a job to
run on either tape drive, I can not at run time alter an existing job to
run on the other tape drive. If I do try to alter the storage location
of a job (with the mod option of the run command), my request to use
a different storage device is ignored.

Both drives have a mounted tape from the default pool

status storage=Molerat-0 gives:

Device status:
Device DLT-0 (/dev/st0) is mounted with Volume=DLT120 Pool=Default
Total Bytes Read=0 Blocks Read=0 Bytes/block=0
Positioned at File=9 Block=0
Device DLT-1 (/dev/st1) is mounted with Volume=DLT121 Pool=Default
Total Bytes=504,612,864 Blocks=7,821 Bytes/block=64,520
Positioned at File=1 Block=0

If I run a predefined job and don't override the storage location each
job runs on the proper tape drive...

This works and puts the job on the first drive:

Run Backup job
JobName:  Molerat
Level:Full
Client:   molerat-fd
FileSet:  LinuxFull
Pool: Default (From Job resource)
Storage:  Molerat-0 (From Job resource)

This works and puts the job on the second drive:

Run Backup job
JobName:  Molerat-test
Level:Full
Client:   molerat-fd
FileSet:  LinuxFull
Pool: Default (From Job resource)
Storage:  Molerat-1 (From Job resource)

This is a request to put the job on the second drive, but the first
drive is used:

Run Backup job
JobName:  Molerat
Level:Full
Client:   molerat-fd
FileSet:  LinuxFull
Pool: Default (From Job resource)
Storage:  Molerat-1 (From user selection)

As you can see from the following (I canceled the job), the job went to

Interesting... when I cancel a job like this, I always get TWO lines of
messages. One from the DIR, one from the SD or FD, I think.

 After a while they still got cancelled, so these error messages were a little
 misleading.

 A bug?

Or possible the rwason why the jobs were hanging around... like the DIR
still knew of them, but the SD or FD was restarted in between. This, at
least, is usually the reason when I get the not found messages.
Accompanied, to emphasize that, usually by a message that the job was
canceled.

Never tried it, but using a clever mtx-changer script it should be

 and he had some reasons for it.

If this is the case, then there would be no reason to be able to change
the storage device of a job with the mod option at runtime... or am I
missing something?

I will poke around on the archive and see if I can find the past
discussion, but it would seem to me that if there is an option to
redirect a job to a new storage device, then that option should work.

Rex

 The must have convinced me at least, because I once fought with the
 behaviour you describe, too.

 You'll have to search the list archives (try gmane.org) yourself, or
 remind me in a week or so... hopefully, I'll find the time to look up
 that discussion then.
