Newbie questions

2011-08-19 Thread Alex Popescu
Hi all,

I'm a newbie to BBEdit and after spending sometime through the menus
and (the scarce) documentation I still have a couple of questions I
couldn't answer:

1. Is there a way to have the Toolbar hidden by default?

I have defined a shortcut for showing/hidding it, but I hoped I could
keep it hidden by default.

2. When working with a project (directory) of files:

2.1. Is there any way to navigate the project view using the keyboard?
I do a Cmd+0 to show the project view, but then I don't seem to find a
way to navigate it using the keyboard only.

2.2. Is there a way to navigate the files in a project without the
project view?

Note: Please do not suggest using PeepCode as a solution to this.

I think that's all for now.

Many thanks in advance,

Alex://

Re: Newbie questions

2011-08-20 Thread Alex Popescu
Kerri, you are right: I forgot about the BBEdit Help book. In my
defense I have been clear about being a newbie--well, that's just
half defense :-).

I'll go through the doc and learn the tricks in there.

Re: opening files in project

2011-08-20 Thread Alex Popescu
I was asking a similar question the other day wondering if PeepCode is
the only answer.

When working with a project there is an "Open file by name" menu item
available that accepts wildcards. I briefly tried it and while not
completely similar to TM Cmd+T, I think this is the closest you'll
get. On the other hand, PeepCode can give you a different solution.

Possible bug in com.barebones.bbedit ProjectsOpenItemsOnSingleClick

2011-08-21 Thread Alex Popescu
As instructed in my first post to the group, I've spent some time
reading through the BBEdit help and manual. One setting that I was
interested in com.barebones.bbedit ProjectsOpenItemsOnSingleClick
doesn't seem to work correctly in BBEdit 10.0.1

What I did:

defaults write com.barebones.bbedit ProjectsOpenItemsOnSingleClick -
bool NO

Expected behavior:

- when navigating the project view using either arrow keys or the
mouse, file should not open in the editor

Real behavior:

- for both arrow keys and single mouse clicks files are still opened
in the editor

Clarifications about Sharing Application Support & Preferences Data via Dropbox

2011-08-21 Thread Alex Popescu
Hi,

Could anyone clarify the second part of the "Sharing Application
Support & Preferences Data via Dropbox":

* Locate your BBEdit preference data folder (either ~/Library/BBEdit/
or ~/Library/Preferences/com.barebones.bbedit.PreferenceData/)

I do have a ~/Library/BBEdit/ folder

• Rename your BBEdit preference data folder from “BBEdit” (or
“com.barebones.bbedit.PreferenceData”) to “PreferenceData”.

I can do this

• Move the renamed preference data folder into ~/Dropbox/Application
Support/BBEdit/, and rename it

This last part is confusing. The way I read it is that ~/Library/
BBEdit/ folder previously renamed to ~/Library/PreferenceData should
be under ~/Dropbox/Application Support/BBEdit/. But what should it be
renamed to?

tia,

If it'd be possible to vote for new features I'd probably give this
one a +1.

On the other hand I didn't play enough with Open file by name (which
could be quite similar to Open resource file in Eclipse).

I've tried moving the ~/Library/BBedit files into ~/Dropbox/
Application Support/BBEdit/Setup but it doesn't seem to work or at
least I see the ~/Library/BBEdit folder recreated.

I've read the Read Me.txt file, but I couldn't find a clear reference

The documentation doesn't mention anywhere creating a Library folder
in Dropbox, but an Application Support. I've already made this change
and it seems to work OK (I don't see BBEdit recreating the original "~/

I don't want to sound picky but how can it be a bargain if it doesn't
even work?

Leaving it aside for a second, I'd say that such functionality should
exist in BBEdit by default and users ahouldn't have to spend money on
a 3rd party tool whose compatibility is not guaranteed.

I'm planning to take Open file by name for an extensive test and see
how it behaves compared with other similar functionality in other text
editors/IDEs.

Opening Files in Project Feature Suggestion

2011-08-27 Thread Alex Popescu
I've been reading this group for a while and played a bit more with
the Open File by Name feature (the closest to what other editors
provide). While it is definitely not on par with other solutions (Cmd
+T in TextMate, PeepCode, etc.) it could be good enough if:

1. it would use some filters to ignore files and searching

While using it with a versioned project, a search will also look
under .svn or .git folders. This is very annoying as I'd never really
want to look into those files. In case some advanced users would
actually need to access those files, then there could be a checkbox to
disable global filters.

The set of global filters would probably have to include:

- versioning files
- temporary files
- binary/compilation result files

2. in some next version, the open file by name would perform a fuzzy
live search: having feedback when performing an operation is so
present these days, that it looks odd that a desktop application is
not able to provide any feedback until clicking OK.

I hope you'll consider these features for the next versions of
BBEdit.

Python clipping help

2011-09-06 Thread Alex Popescu
Hi,

As I haven't found any Python specific clippings (well, there's a
Django one, but I just want something generic), I've started to create
my own.

Here is my first attempt:

try:
#INDENT##SELECTIONORINSERTION#
#INDENT#except #PLACEHOLDERSTART#exceotion#PLACEHOLDEREND#,
#PLACEHOLDERSTART#name#PLACEHOLDEREND#:
#INDENT##INSERTION#

As many of you already know Python is space/tab aware so I was
wondering what solution might I have to determine how to correctly
indent the code according to the file indentation.

Navigating methods

2011-09-07 Thread Alex Popescu
Hi all,

At the top of the editors there's a small "thing" that allows
navigating a source file by functions (probably other structural
elements). Any ideas how I could get "that thing" to show up and take
focus using a shortcut? I'm not able to figure out what's the
corresponding editor functionality to associate it with a shortcut.

many thanks in advance,

Installing Attachment Scripts

2011-09-07 Thread Alex Popescu
Hi,

A kind BBEdit user (ascarter) has been kind enough to put together an
AppleScript that trigger ctags [1]. Following the instructions in the
BBEdit manual I've modified this script to have a on documentDidSave
function that triggers makeTags.

As per the manual, I've named the script Document.documentDidSave.scpt
and saved it into my ~/Dropbox/Application Support/BBEdit/Attachment
Scripts folder.

But the script doesn't seem to be triggered at all. I've removed most
of the code in the original and just left inside:

on documentDidSave()
  display dialog "BBEdit on documentDidSave" buttons {"Yes", "No"}
default button 2 with icon 1
  -- makeTags()
end documentDidSave

but still no results. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

Minutes after posting a question related to this script I've figured
it out:

1. name the script Document.documentDidSave.scpt

2. add the following code:

on documentDidSave()
makeTags()
end documentDidSave

3. when saving the script make sure that it is saved as Script + Run
only (nb: according to the documentation the script must be compiled
and I assume Run only option means it is compiled)

4. done

Thanks a lot,

As always, seconds after posting the question I've figured it out:

1. script location is correct (Application Support/BBEdit/Attachment
Scripts)

2. script name was correct (Document.documentDidSave.scpt)

3. when saving the script make sure it is saved as: Script with the
Run only option checked

4. it works

Displaying/Following symlinks in Project view

Hi,

I was wondering if there's any option available to enable displaying/
following symlinks in Project view. I use symlinks quite often and I'd
prefer not to navigate outside BBEdit to get to them

I think you can go into Preferences -> Languages and associate the txt
extension with Markdown.
Keep in mind that this will treat all txt files as markdown going
forward though.

Well, I have to partially disagree with that, by placing them at about
the same learning experience. What I've found more difficult in vim/
MacVim is getting used to it, not learning the common functionality.
But all these are usually very biased points.

Loading project freezes BBEdit 10 and 10.0.2 for seconds

2011-09-14 Thread Alex Popescu
Hi,

Today I've loaded a Java project into BBEdit. While not extremely big
(but with a probably over 100 source files) it makes BBEdit (10 and
the 10.0.2 preview) freeze for seconds.

As I newbie BBEdit user this came as a big surprise considering that
most of the people comparing BBEdit w/ TextMate were referring to
scenarios where TM would be freezing out while BBEdit would not even
notice.

Is there something that I should look for to debug this situation? One
thing that I'd like would be the possibility to tell BBEdit to ignore
some subfolders as those contained compiled code and that's of no
interest for editing.

Any help in figuring out what's the issue is much appreciated,

Re: Can someone explain ctags to me?

2011-09-21 Thread Alex Popescu
I'm reviving this thread to post some more updates and also ask for
some help.

1. As mentioned previously I've used ascarter's script as a
Document.documentDidSave. After doing it BBEdit started to freeze even
if I wasn't just navigating through a project.

The reason for BBEdit freezing was exactly the tags generation script.
BBEdit is performing autosaves and so it was triggering it very often.
In fact it was so often that made BBEdit almost unusable with decently
sized projects.

Lesson learned: don't use the tags generation script as a
documentDidSave event, except you can filter an actual source file
save.

2. The conclusion above made me think that a better event to attach
the tags generation would be the Save action. So I've transformed it
into a File • Save script.

This approach has solved the above issue, but the script in the
current form was not able to make the difference between a real
project (with a folder structure) and a bunch a separate files opened
in the current window.

3. This is the part where I'm asking for help. The script in the
current form can be found at the end of the post. What I'd need help
with is:

3.1 Is there a way to determine if the current window belongs to a
real project vs a set of random files?

3.2. Could someone validate the following code snippet which tries to
get the parent folder if the main script result is a file:

if kind of (info for theFile) is "folder" then
-- Run the maketags script
set thePath to POSIX path of theFile
else
set thePath to POSIX path of (container of theFile)
end if
set cmd to "cd " & thePath & "; /usr/local/bin/bbedit
--maketags"

3.3 Is there a way to install this script and trigger it through a
menu item/shortcut against the current project instead of having it
automatically triggered by the Save action?

on menuselect(menuName, itemName)
if menuName = "File" and itemName = "Save" then
-- must return false to let the application do the work
return false
end if
end menuselect
on postmenuselect(menuName, itemName)
-- this is called after the application has processed
-- the command
if menuName = "File" and itemName = "Save" then
my makeTags()
end if
end postmenuselect

on makeTags()
set theFile to missing value

tell application "BBEdit"
set activeWindow to front window

if (class of activeWindow is project window) then
set projectDocument to project document of activeWindow

if ((count of items of projectDocument) > 0) then
set firstFileItem to item 1 of projectDocument
as alias
else
set firstFileItem to file of document of
activeWindow as alias
end if

if (on disk of projectDocument) then
set theProjectFile to file of projectDocument
as alias

tell application "Finder"
set theProjectDir to container of
theProjectFile
set firstFileDir to container of
firstFileItem
end tell

if (firstFileDir is equal to theProjectDir) then
-- Use project file
set theFile to theProjectDir as alias
else
-- External project file -> use first
item to set context
set theFile to firstFileItem
end if
else
-- BBEdit doesn't provide direct access to the
Instaproject root
-- Use the first node from the project list
set theFile to firstFileItem
end if
end if
end tell

if theFile is equal to missing value then
-- No base file found for reference
-- Signal error by beep and end
-- beep
else
if kind of (info for theFile) is "folder" then
-- Run the maketags script
set thePath to POSIX path of theFile
else
set thePath to POSIX path of (container of theFile)
end if
set cmd to "cd " & thePath & "; /usr/local/bin/bbedit
--maketags"
do shell script cmd
end if
end makeTags

Many thanks in advance for the help,

Even if the two previous suggestions are good, but not optimized for
speed typing, the solution I'd suggest is to assign a shortcut to
Close current tag and one that is not very difficult to type
frequently.

Another possible solution is to assign a nice shortcut to Insert
clipping (e.g. Ctrl + Space) menu and have that insert the tags as it
automatically inserts the tags.

Switching between the Project Panel and Editor

2012-04-14 Thread Alex Popescu
Hi all,

I've searched both the forum and skimmed over BBEdit documentation and I
couldn't find any references to how to quickly switch from the Project
panel to Editor and back. Right now what I'm doing is:

1. while in Project panel/view: after opening a file, Tab to the editor
(depending on if Currently Opened Documents and Recent Documents panels are
activated I need to Tab a couple of times to get to the editor)
2. while in Editor view... I have to move my hand to the mouse to click the
Project panel

This feels quite unproductive and I was wondering if there's a different
way to switch between these panels. Scripts would also be ok.

thanks in advance,

A://

Wouldn't it be weird to look to hide the Currently Open Documents when the
files panel would already be hidden :-)? The sidebar (files panel) is
active, but the following two options are disabled:

1. Hide Currently Open Documents
2. Hide Worksheet & Scratchpad (I don't have a worksheet or scratchpad so
this makes sense)

Slowness on startup and with project

2013-05-08 Thread Alex Popescu
Hi,

I was wondering if others have noticed a slow down in BBEdit lately.
Basically when I fire it I get beach balling and it takes a good few
seconds before it becomes available (this on a rMBR with 8GB of RAM). I'm
also using BBEdit with a project that has about 4000+ files. Clicking in
the Project view is painful (basically nothing happens for good seconds).

I did some changes but they were mostly splitting my previous .bash_profile
into multiple (semantic) .files. Did you see anything in the profile?

Quick update (after Rich's question about .bash_profile changes). I went
and installed the 10.5.3 release version and I definitely don't see the
slowness I'm seeing with the dev builds.

Backspace in Open file by name

2014-11-12 Thread Alex Popescu

if I open "Open File by Name" dialog and I try to delete characters using
Backspace, it actually adds spaces.

food offering done... but I don't like restarting finder (if that would be
required I'd say it's a bug, not a feature)
