Re: BBEdit losing its punch?

2008-09-04 Thread stratboy

Well, I'm using BBEdit since about 1999,with Mac Os 8.6 or so... I'm
an xhtml/js/as programmer.
Every new release helped me a lot with new productivity features! And
this one, with auto-completion (I asked a lot for it and finally it's
there!!! :) ) and improved project management, after a few days is
already giving me a lot of joy while working. Sure, it's a .0 version,
therefore maybe it needs some adjustments (and I'm already writing to
the support team abou them), but for me, it just rocks! :)

In fact, I don't understand really much what scratchpad is for. It
would be really good if barebones post a tutorial about professional
use of it.

Auto-completion: actionscript 3.0 and other issues

2008-09-04 Thread stratboy

Auto-completion is fantastic, but for me has 2 main problems:

- for actionscript 3.0 is only partial: it doesn't even have the
package and class keywords, not to speak about many other.

- it should be language-specific. If I'm writing a javascript file, I
should only see javascript keywords, otherwise auto-completion, for
me, looses a part of its productivity value, and after all, auto-
completion is all about productivity.

Please excuse me for my bad english.

Bye!

[9.0] text colour bug in AS 3.0 files?

2008-09-04 Thread stratboy

Hi! I'm experiencing a strange bug in text colors in actionscript 3.0
files. I've already written about it to the support team. I only want
to know if any of you has the same problem.

The problem is with comments colour (that for me is green).

In .as documents with comments inside, often, when I start to edit
them, all the comments in the following lines loose their green colour
and revert back to standard code colour. If I close and re-open the
file, they're green again, but they'll turn to the normal colour if I
try to edit the code.
If I change the language type to javascript (even if their .as), all
works fine.

Any of you?
Tkz! Luca

clippings for AS3?

Hi! I've just created some clipping for as3. I've also installer the

But now I'd really like the autocompletion to show my as3 clippings.
In other words I'm looking for a method to 'link' a clippings folder

selective auto-completion

2008-10-30 Thread stratboy

Hi! Is there a way to exclude some source for the auto-completion?
More specifically, i'd really like to exclude the green dictionary
words from the javascript/actionscript auto-completion. Or at least
(it would be even better), i'd like them to be litsted only after the
words that come from the language module AND the clippings.

My main problem with this issue is that my clipping don't appear
immediately after the module words. They appear in the middle of
dictionary words, alphabetically ordered with them. I'd like the
clippings to take precedence instead. Is it possible?

Please excuse me for bad english.

Re: clippings for AS3?

2008-10-30 Thread stratboy

[SOLVED] Answered by myself:

As of BBEdit 9.0.2 (don't know previous versions), I've got to call
the actionscript clipping folder with the .as extension (ex. ~/Library/
Application Support/BBEdit/Clippings/Actionscript.as) and put the
clippings files there.

That's all, all working fine now! :)

Another auto-completion suggestion

Hi! I'd like really much if in some cases, especially in css, auto-

For example when I write, say, 'position:', I'd like to see a set of

Feature request: better html auto completion

2009-03-07 Thread stratboy

Hi! I've got a feature request: It would be great if the html auto-
completion believed like the dreamweaver one. In other words, when I
write a tag, it auto-completes by himself, and when I close it, it
auto-closes. Or, in other words, obvious things like this, should
autocomplete by themselves without me to chose the right completion.
If I write '.

I'm not so good in english, hope this is clear and helps.

Hi Dennis, I think we all know the things you say about completion in
bbedit, but that's why I'm requesting this feature: because it's not
like the things you're explaining. I always use clippings, and I've
made a lot of custom clippings, and that's really fine, but that's not
what we mean.
I think maybe you could grab a dw or golive copy to see how different
they work with html and undestand what we're saying (especially when
closing tags), if you want.

Thanks, bye!

Mmm no, there must be something wrong, because with the previous

Ok, I come from here (a post of mine):

http://groups.google.com/group/bbedit/browse_thread/thread/c23a3d6be244a7c8/

I've got this problem too. BOM or not BOM for me is a simple problem:
as an xhtml programmer, I need simple utf-8 since the no-bom encoding
makes a lor of characters displaying wrong (unless I use the old
entities). So I frankly don't mind if ir better to use the no-bom
encoding. For me, it's quite evident that good-old plain utf-8 is
better. That's why I want it back like it was before 9.3 :)

this time, maybe there are some reasons. So, fight more, fight harder,
I want still continue to use bbedit, but you must be the best, since
you by far are the most expensive! :)

a better auto completion? :)

2009-11-30 Thread stratboy
Hi, there are 2 main things I think you could consider to make a
better auto completion:

- auto-closing html tags. Just like dreamweaver or coda. There are
really no reasons for not closing a tag immediately after writing it.
Also the are really no reasons for letting the coder doing it for
bbedit ;)

- hints for css values. They really lack. And since they're simply
language syntax, they shouldn't be made by the coder via clippings. I
mean: if I write for example, 'font-weight', I'm expecting to see
hints for 'bold' and 'normal'. Another: if I write 'list-style-type',
I'm expecting to see 'upper-roman', 'disc', 'square', etc..

Bye! :)

Re: a better auto completion? :)

2009-12-01 Thread stratboy
My message was to the developers.

I used bbedit for 10 years, since mac os 8.5...
I'm an experieced xhtml / javascript / actionscript programmer and a
web designer. I know what I say.

If the competitors make some choices, maybe there are reasons.
And if new competitors rapidly gain such a success, maybe there are
some more reasons.

If auto-balance completion is more an issue for some coders, well,
simply put it in a menu/preferences option. For me, it's really not an
issue. I really don't see anything useful in writing things like or . I write them since 1999, I'm quite tired.. But hey,
you're right, I'm speaking only for me.

And for css, yes, not all values can be put in clippings (for example
numeric values), but there are really a lot that could. After all, if
you use auto-completion for tags, it's just the same for every other
bit of code.

Anyway, these are only suggestions.

css: nested comments

2009-12-04 Thread stratboy
Hi! Another really useful feature, for me, would be the possibility of
placing nested comments in css files.
To be more clear: in html files, if I comment an area that itself
contains comments, they get modified so code won't break. Then, they
can be restored. It would be useful the possibility of doing the same
with css comments.

feature requests about projects

2010-02-04 Thread stratboy
Hi! A couple of requests for the files column of the project window:

1. It would be really nice if it retained the labels colors eventually
setted with finder

2. it would be also nice if I could really duplicate a file and see it
in the real window. This feature would save me a lot fo switching
between finder and bbedit.

3. The copy path. Well, as a starting idea is good. But, in practice,
I do not use it too much for a couple of reasons:

- I need to access a submenu of the context menu: not so usable. It
would be better that the 4 copy tasks were visible directly in the
context menu.

- Copy URL is a file: url: based on my machine: quite unusable in a
website development context. It would be nice if I could define a root
on a per-project basis, and have that commands behave accordingly.

Not to speak about copy path and full path.

So, I usually end up using only copy name. But, how about making
easier copying a simple file name by, for example, hitting command+c
after selecting a file in the file column?

Thank you, hi!

definitive tutorial on completion and language modules?

2010-04-28 Thread stratboy
Hi! I see these notes about 9.5:

- Compiled language modules may specify a new plist key:
BBLMCompletionTagsFileNames. This is an array of strings, each one
corresponding to the name of a file in the language module's Resources
directory. Each file (if present) is expected to be a valid tags file,
and is used when generating completions.

- There's a new placeholder format: <#* ... #>. This is used for
optional arguments generated during completion. It can be selected in
the usual fashion; and if you delete a selected optional-argument
placeholder with the Backspace key, BBEdit will delete any leading
whitespace, back to a preceding comma (if there is one).

- BBEdit now uses the ctags files in ~/Library/Application Support/
BBEdit/Completion Data/ for more than just completion: "Find
Definition" (and the contextual menu) will now include definitions
specified on those tags files (which is handy if you've built a tags
file from a Mac OS X or iPhone SDK); and symbols defined in the
central tags files will also appear in an appropriate color.

- Completion data dictionaries generated by language modules can now
contain an additional key: AutoIndentCompletionText. It's optional,
but if present signals the completion system that the completion text,
if multi-line, should be auto-indented according to where the
completion is inserted.

- BBEdit can now generate completions for include file names in C/C++/
ObjC/ObjC++ source files. (This applies when typing in an #include or
#import directive.) The data is sourced from the active Xcode project,
system headers and frameworks, and the directory containing the source
file in which you're completing.

So, to me it's not so clear. Maybe would be great to see a definitive
tutorial about all this completion an language-related stuff, along
with the previews versions enhancements. :)

Bye!

9.5 - still the same html tools?

2010-04-28 Thread stratboy
Hi! ! little thing - a feature request I made a long time ago: the
anchor tag html tool, still doesn't give me the opportunity of adding
a rel attribute. I think that maybe you should update all the (x)html
tools to reflect today's needs. Yesterday's, maybe, given that tools
like lightbox (that require the rel attribute) have out there for a
while now..

9.5 - problem in html syntax coloring

2010-04-28 Thread stratboy
Hi!

@import url(files/css/default.css);
@import url(files/css/shared.css);
@import url(files/css/menu.css);
@import url(files/css/home.css);

The closing tag appears black, not blue. This seems that can
happen in all similar situations. I've seen it 2 times last hour, so
probably there's some syntax coloring problem.

2010-05-04 Thread stratboy

I already asked: isn't it time for a really definitive guide on
clippings, autompletion?

empty the clipboard so that new copy & append calls will start
appending from nothing?

Re: HTML 5 and CSS 3

Yes, I think that BBEdit HTML tools in general REALLY need an heavy
upgrade, not only for html5/css3 issues.

Also, one thing that would really set BBEdit apart, would to finally
have full and up-to-date native autocomplation for the most important
js frameworks, jquery and Mootools first. It comes with some prototype
snippets but hey.. Prototype... Still Prototype? Really? Are you maybe
joking? :)

problem with clipping indentation

2010-09-14 Thread stratboy
Hi! See:

#indent#

#select#

Suppose I've got already indented code (as it always is..). I start
the selection to the same indentation of that code. Then I use the
above clipping. What happens is that:

- the div tag is properly placed and indented
- the FIRST line of the selected code is properly indented
- the subsequent lines of the selected code are wrong: again indented

like this:

--

original (first lines):

America

---

after clipping insert (first lines):

America

---

See that the clipping div is ok, the h4 is ok, but from , all the subsequent lines the are indented
again, a lot.

is it a bug? Am I wrong? Is there any solution? Thank you.

Re: Why BBE pisses me off

2011-08-23 Thread stratboy
I agree, that's it. Maybe it's not the right/polite way to file
problems, but, I was REALLY tempted to do it me too.
After paying money, (also in euro exactly == dollars, curious, where's
the change rate??) and after trying bbedit for about 30 minutes, saw
that a certain number of good features were gone (read the manual to
be sure, I couldn't believe.. But.. ), while other simple but
effective features that I asked in the years (really several mails, I
use bbedit since 1999..) still aren't implemented, and they say 'we
are working on them'...
So I restored version 9 and reported all the things, the polite way
(with a certain difficulty to stop my lowest instincts..). Very few
things still keeps me from switching to softwares like Espresso or
TextMate right now...
It's quite a sad thing, though. Hope they SOON clean up things and get
it back better.

Re: BBEdit 10.0.2 (3087) pre-release

2011-09-07 Thread stratboy
At least, this version lacks (compared with v9) the possibility to
drag drop multiple images from the project drawer to hml documents,
lacks the auto setup of dimensions for the image tag, and so the other
fast tag setups that v9 has, such as the pre defined title filed for
the anchor tags (we always put titles: so like the href prop, I should
not have to select the title field from the menu to define it: and why
are there both the class and id attributes then? Title is quite
mandatory in good html programming, while class and id are just
options). So, to me, it's still a downgrade. It really seems that none
of the bbedit programmers are advanced html programmers. You should
hire someone to extensively check the real usability and effectiveness
of the html tools. I'm shure you would end up strongly improving this
aspect of bbedit.
You surely did something good by adding the ability to add arbitrary
properties to html tags, but you stripped out ALL the good things
there were in v9. v10 seems just an heavily incomplete draft, not a
finished upgrade. So right direction, but far from the final step (at
least for what affects the html tools and projects).

Bye!

Re: My Disappoints in BBEdit 10

2011-09-12 Thread stratboy
At least, this version lacks (compared with v9) the possibility to
drag drop multiple images from the project drawer to hml documents,
and so the other
fast tag setups that v9 has, such as the pre defined title filed for
the anchor tags (we always put titles: so like the href prop, I should
not have to select the title field from the menu to define it: and why
are there both the class and id attributes then? Title is quite
mandatory in good html programming, while class and id are just
options). So, to me, it's still a downgrade.

Basically (I insist on this) It really seems that none
of the bbedit programmers are advanced *HTML* programmers. You should
hire someone to extensively check the real usability and effectiveness
of the html tools. I'm shure you would end up strongly improving this
aspect of bbedit.

You surely did something good by adding the ability to add arbitrary
properties to html tags, but you stripped out ALL the good things
there were in v9. v10 seems just an incomplete draft, not a
finished upgrade. So right direction, but far from the final step (at
least for what affects the HTML TOOLS and projects).
Maybe for say, a C++ programmer is a huge upgrade, I don't know.
For me, an html/css/js/as/php programmer, using bbedit since 1999, v10
it's not an upgrade, compared with v9.6

Me too. And I switched back to 9 about 30 minutes after buying 10. :P
Then I come back to 10 several times, to follow some suggestions found
here, and to check the upgrades, but every time came back to 9 in
about 5 minutes.. And today I'm still working with 9, waiting to see a
better 10 (since I paid for it.. btw..). So, I'm definitely with you.

how about making bbedit eat TextMate Bundles like Sublime Text?

2013-10-30 Thread stratboy
Hi. I'm a bbedit user from 1999, maybe before. I'm a web developer, so my
languages are mainly html, css, js, php, less, ruby. Now I need to learn
and use Slim.
Over the last years I've been tempted more than a time to switch to more
'modern' text editors like Text Mate and Espresso.
I always decided to stick on bbedit because I ended up thinking it has more
features after all, and some better ones.
I also made a lot of feature suggestions over the years. In the best cases,
i was told 'yes, we will think later', and never saw them done. So I'm not
expecting nothing more here, but I try..

I see the new player is Sublime Text. It's quite innovative in many things.
It doesn't matter. But it can use TextMate Bundles. I need Slim text
coloring and it seems there's still no language module for that.
Also, I think at least 1 year ago I pointed out that Less was going to be a
standard, and bbedit needed a less module. Angry folks said no no it's
sass. That was the answer. Now the devs "seem" to be considering including
less. Less IS a standard.
The fact is just this: bbedit badly need a better way to be able to quickly
adapt to new languages. Sublime solved it by being textmate-compatible.
Smart.
Yes, there are codeless language modules. Some say, do one by yourself. I
say I could, but it's not so simple, still not enough. Codeless language
modules are not enough. Maybe it's simply not possible to find a more
simple way to define one, but there's at least another way to let
programmers find quickly a new module: use a shared way. And a way that
