[beagleboard] BBAI USB-C only enumerates as high speed device with cable in one orientation

2019-11-07 Thread nick . graumann

Hello,

I have noticed that my BBAI Rev A1, when connected to a PC, will enumerate
as a high-speed USB device with the USB-C connector in one orientation, and
a Super-Speed device with the connector oriented in the other direction
(simply flipped upside down). I have reproduced this across several
software revisions including the production emmc image:
http://debian.beagleboard.org/images/am57xx-eMMC-flasher-debian-9.9-lxqt-armhf-2019-08-03-4gb.img.xz

I checked the
https://github.com/beagleboard/beaglebone-ai/wiki/System-Reference-Manual#board-changes

page and did not see any changes related to USB in any of the newer
revisions. I was wondering if there are others who also have experienced
this issue, or if it could be isolated to my specific board. I have
reproduced the issue with several different USB-C cables including a USB
A->USB-C and USB-C -> USB-C cable.

First orientation:

2019-05-10 Thread Nick
Hello Markus, hello Mojtaba

I know this is an old thread, but I have identical symptoms with my very
similar setup, so I just wanted to as what you did to fix the issue.
Thanks a lot,
Nick

[beagleboard] CAN setup and auto loading

2019-05-10 Thread Nick

Hi,

I’m completely new to both Beaglebone and Embedded Linux, but I decided to
learn both in order to use Beaglebone Black as a development environment
for a project which needs to include Can Bus interface. This forum and
Molloy’s book are huge help of course, but some topics do require more info
to complete the picture.

In order to enable CanBus on Beaglebone, I did all the steps described in
various places including the book –

a) GPIO configuration using BB-CAN1-00A0.dtbo device tree overlay,

b) LKM deployment using modprobe and finally

c) Interface enabling using the ip link set and ifconfig <> up command.

This all makes sense, but I still have a few questions:

a) In order to do these three steps automatically on bootup, it is
necessary to edit uBoot.txt (which I did) and that will take care of GPIO
configuration. Editing /etc/network/interfaces will take care of interface
enabling, but I still don’t understand what is the way to automatically
load necessary Kernel modules.

b) Also, my understanding at the moment is that these modules are a part of
SocketCan network protocol base driver, but I would appreciate if someone
can confirm (or not) this.

c) Right after power-up, lsmod tells me that c_can_platform is loaded,
together with it’s dependancies – c_can and can_dev. What is the reason
these two were loaded but not the can_raw which is mentioned as required in
every tutorial? Loading of can_raw also causes it’s dependency – can module
to load. How come this one was not loaded automatically with others?

d) Finally, same as some previous posters I see a problem with pins. After
enabling the can0 interface I can see it being loaded using ifconfig
command. I can use it in the loopback mode using /can-utils/candump can0 &
followed by /can-utils/cansend can0 123#123456.

Howeveer, it can’t be uses for the actual physical connection as all
relevant pins are reported as not configured: for pins 19, 20, 24, 26, I
get: config-pin -q P9_26 à P9_26 pinmux file not found! And Pin has no
cape: P9_26. I do have Waveshare RS485/Can Cape connected to the BBB.

Thanks a lot,

Nick

Re: [beagleboard] Re: Debian 8 vs Debian 9

2019-04-08 Thread Nick
Thank you very much David.
I certainly don't care too much about not being able to connect via serial
port, but, like I said, I can't connect to Internet via shared network
connection on my PC, which is something I have no problems doing with
Debian 8.

[beagleboard] Debian 8 vs Debian 9

2019-04-04 Thread Nick

I hope some of you experts can help with this issue.
I learned how to connect to internet via USB port and shared network
connection and it works fine for me with Debian 8. However, I just loaded
the latest Debain 9.5 and many things appear to be different: a) Windows
device manager complains about "CDC Serial" driver; b) Serial port has
changed (Win7 control pannel); c) Can't connect to BBB using PuTTY
USB-serial connection, SSH works; d) Network connections now show RNDIS
network - not "Linux USB Ethernet/RNDIS Gadget" connection like with
earlier Debian, e) I can't connect BBB to internet using shared Network
Connection, which is something I have no problems doing with earlier
Debian. I still have Windows drivers that I installed when I first
connected BBB running Debian 8.? Should I remove them, update them, or
install the new drivers without touching the old ones? According to the new
BBB instructions, Debian 9 doesn't require any Windows drivers, but what if
I already have them installed? Would that cause my network problems? I'll
be very grateful if you can help me with this one. In the meantime, I'm not
flushing eMMC with the latest Debian. Thanks in advance, Nick

[beagleboard] Re: Adding BBB Support For Kotlin Native

2017-04-12 Thread Nick Apperley
Linux Mint uses the same back-end (general infrastructure/software) as
Ubuntu. So Ubuntu 14.04 is the base for Linux Mint 17, Ubuntu 16.04 is the
base for Linux Mint 18 for instance. No need to switch from Linux Mint to
Ubuntu since Linux Mint has a reputation for being the most user
friendly/reliable Linux Desktop distribution. GitHub isn't the best place
to host large binary files.

I already have my own BBB for testing, why would I want another one? All
development I am doing to add BBB support for Kotlin Native isn't
commercially motivated, if anything it is for the benefit of the entire
Kotlin community. Is there an issue with contributing to the community for
non-commercial gain?

[beagleboard] Adding BBB Support For Kotlin Native

2017-04-12 Thread Nick Apperley
Greetings. I am a Kotlin community member that is
working on adding BBB support for Kotlin Native
and need some help with the
following:

   - Selecting a suitable toolchain that will work on Ubuntu, Linux Mint,
and possibly Debian (hosts) for cross compilation to the BBB
   - Setting up a sysroot (libraries, config files to include etc)
   - What C libraries to use with the toolchain (if applicable)
   - Standard C library to use for the embedded side (for use in a
*"Blinky"* Kotlin Native sample program on the BBB side)
   - Hosting for the Kotlin Native BBB toolchain and sysroot (stored as
   *tar.gz* files)

Now for a bit of background Kotlin Native uses the Kotlin programming
language, and LLVM for developing native programs
(executables) that work on multiple platforms (Linux x86-64, Mac OSX, ARM
Cortex A SBC's etc) without a virtual machine. Currently there is automatic
reference counting for automatic memory management (no GC implemented), and
manual memory management can also be used. Interoperability
 is
available for C (not C++) libraries, which has a partial reliance on libffi
. There are some Kotlin Native samples
 available
with the most sophisticated one being a Tetris

game which uses the SDL library.

The Kotlin programming language was created by JetBrains
(the company that sells tools like PyCharm
 and IntelliJ
). Andrey Breslav is the language founder
who named Kotlin after Kotlin Island
 near Saint Petersburg,
Russia. Kotlin is designed to be a programmatic (industrial), Object
Orientated (is multi paradigm) programming language, which is fully
inter-operable with Java (Kotlin JVM only), and is open source
(Apache 2). Average time for learning
Kotlin is around 3 days,
although some people can pickup Kotlin in a few hours. Main areas where
Kotlin is used are Android, and server side (especially micro web services)
development. You might be interested in listening to some Talking Kotlin
podcasts which cover other areas where Kotlin
has been used.

Would be highly appreciated (also grateful) by the Kotlin Native team if
the Beaglebone Foundation could send a BBB to JetBrains in order to ensure
that Kotlin Native properly supports the BBB. Important to note that Kotlin
is split into three platforms:

   - Kotlin JVM (Kotlin on the Java platform)
   - Kotlin JS (Kotlin on the web)
   - Kotlin Native (Kotlin on native platforms without a virtual machine)

[beagleboard] UARTs and pin names

2017-02-15 Thread Nick Grey
Hi

I'm looking @ the BB Black for a project. I need 4 UARTs for this, only one
of which needs to have RTS CTS flow control.

The Black seems to fit the bill, but looking at
http://elinux.org/Beagleboard:Cape_Expansion_Headers in section 4.5 Serial
UARTS the pins for UART5 are suffixed with a "+". Anyone know why this is?
I'm guessing it's a potential conflict with another peripheral option.

One other thing I'm not 100% sure about is the GPIO pins have 8 different
modes. I assume these can be set on a per-pin basis? (as opposed from
choosing from one of 8 predefined sets for the whole chip)

If it's relevant my overall requirement is:

4 UART
Ethernet
USB host
microSD card
10 GPIOs
Audio (analog - will need to add codec)
No display

Thanks
Nick

Thanks for the info. Will look forward to seeing them on RS in the coming
weeks then. Good luck with the US distributors.

[beagleboard] BeagleBoard-X15 production board update

2016-09-30 Thread Nick Cripps
Hi,

Apologies if this has been covered recently.

I am wondering what the current status of BeagleBoard-X15 production boards is.
The wiki seems to imply that production boards would be shipping this week but,
it also says that only A2 versions are currently available. Can anyone clarify
what is on sale on RS UK as a BeagleBoard-X15 here
https://uk.rs-online.com/mobile/p/processor-microcontroller-development-kits/8874764/
and, if it is not a production board, when they are expected to go on sale in
the UK?

Many thanks,
Nick

[beagleboard] track width of external/internal layer

2016-04-15 Thread Nick

Dear BeagleBoard

I have a Beaglebone black hardware and have few question regarding the same
in some document i found the layer stack up dimension in mils it is
mistyped as inched anyway.

<https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-qz23YbGfDBM/VxEULsycp5I/AKQ/ZjgCUqH28WIPO0VD4rvFiqyIU4GP5pj8wCLcB/s1600/Screen%2BShot%2B2016-04-15%2Bat%2B17.16.56.png>

   1. does this track width (50ohm single ended impedance control) marked
in red represent all signal lines like spi,i2c,uart, gpio including power
lines in which case the track width of power line is also 4.75 mils on
external layer and 5.25 miles on internal layers ?

Re: [beagleboard] BeagleBone PCB stackup

2016-04-15 Thread Nick
Hello gerald/forum

I had a look at BeagleBone_Black_RevB4_FAB.pdf
in there i can see for the 50 ohm impedance signal with a track width of
4.75 on external layers and 5.25 on internal layers
so does that mean power supply lines are also 4.75 track width on external
layer and 5.25 on internal layer

Nick

[beagleboard] RNDIS doesn't work with console images for BBB

2015-06-19 Thread Nick B
When I program my BBB with lxde based Debian images from
http://elinux.org/Beagleboard:BeagleBoneBlack_Debian#2015-03-01
the RNDIS driver seems to function correctly and I can ping and ssh into my
BBB through USB. However when I program the console
only images, the RNDIS connection doesn't work correctly. I am using a
Windows 7 PC, and I can see the new network connection get created
when I plug in the BBB, but it says Network Cable Unplugged. This behavior
is the same whether I use the Flasher images or the SD Card images,
current release (2015-03-01) or snapshots. Is there something different
about the console images that prevents the RNDIS from working correctly?
Is there a way that I can get the same behavior with the smaller console
images?

2015-05-06 Thread Nick Wernicke
There really isnt anything wrong with the shipped debian os. I have a
custom angstrom build i have been using for a long time with some
networking options and a loadable module i made/am making.

I borrowed a friends win7 laptop and my image copied perfectly on the first
try. Im just bitter that win 8.1 seems to fail and waste time in so many
ways.

[beagleboard] Beaglebone Black and Windows 8.1

2015-05-06 Thread Nick Wernicke
Hello all, I gave my old (Angstrom) BBB to a friend, and purchased new one,
which apparently comes with Debian. I need to get that *&(%^ off of there
and get a proper embedded OS onto it so I can run C/C++ programs and use
device trees.

Has anyone noticed that the win32 disk imager doesn't seem to work in
windows 8.1? Is there a fix for that?
Has anyone noticed that the beaglebone drivers don't recognize properly in
windows 8.1? I can't even tell which device it is to apply the drivers
manually: Integrated USB bridge, Unknown USB Device, or USB Input Device.

Robert - thanks for the advise. Would it make sense economically to go for
the Wandboard Quad over the upcoming Beagleboard X15 when it comes to
running GUI programs?

FYI OpenJFX 1.8u40 includes Dialog/Alert API
. If you use the
Oracle JDK then you will have to wait until around March 2015 to take
advantage of the new API.

Re: [beagleboard] Re: JavaFX 8 on BeagleBone Black (SGX driver problem?)

2014-11-28 Thread Nick Apperley
Basic overview of setting up a BBB running Ubuntu 14.04 to run a JavaFX
program (*rough draft*):

1. Add unofficial OpenJDK 8 PPA
2. Update package list
3. Install OpenJDK 8 JamVM package
4. Make sure OpenJDK is installed by running *java -version* in a terminal
(should see OpenJDK 1.8 being mentioned in the output)
5. Build DirectFB 1.6
6. Install DirectFB to */usr*
7. Extract OpenJFX 1.8u40 runtime file (7z) using *p7zip* and copy the lib
directory to the OpenJDK 8 JRE directory
8. Run Ensemble8 demo in X11 via LXDE to make sure that a JavaFX program
will run properly:

*java -Djavafx.platform=DirectFB -jamvm -jar
/home/a_user/sample_dir/Ensemble8.jar*

Would it be possible to have a JavaFX section in the BBB wiki on the ELinux
website?

Re: [beagleboard] Re: JavaFX 8 on BeagleBone Black (SGX driver problem?)

2014-11-28 Thread Nick Apperley
Do be aware with OpenJFX that JavaFX programs on the BBB will only run in
X11 with DirectFB being specified as the renderer. DirectFB on the BBB with
the current revision of OpenJFX that I was using had the bizarre GTK
requirement, which prevents the framebuffer (no X11) from being used. Also
a custom version of DirectFB must be built and installed. There is an
ancient version of DirectFB in the Debian/Ubuntu repository but it doesn't
work with OpenJFX or JavaFX.

Re: [beagleboard] Re: JavaFX 8 on BeagleBone Black (SGX driver problem?)

2014-11-27 Thread Nick Apperley
By default OpenJDK 8 uses the Zero JVM which doesn't provide a high level
of performance. Highly recommended to use the high performance JamVM JVM
instead, which is comparable performance wise to the JVM used in Oracle's
Java SE Embedded 8. JamVM was originally designed to perform well on
resource constrained embedded devices. Java 8 Lambda features can be used
in a JavaFX program on an embedded device using JamVM, which the Oracle JVM
doesn't support (in the case of Java SE Embedded 8).

to have Robert Nelson look into this issue with LXDE?

Re: [beagleboard] Re: JavaFX 8 on BeagleBone Black (SGX driver problem?)

2014-11-24 Thread Nick Apperley
Thanks for that. Discovered that JamVM isn't an actual JRE since it relies
on the class libraries which are available in OpenJDK. JamVM is only a JVM
(Java Virtual Machine). From the outset JamVM *might* be able to run JavaFX
programs since it is compatible with OpenJDK 8. IcedTea (OpenJDK
derivative) uses JamVM as its JVM.

Originally JamVM was designed to perform well on very resource constrained
embedded devices. Now JamVM can be used on Linux PCs (x86/AMD64).

Thanks for the update. Damm, oh well there is the option to do a custom

Having great difficulty in tracking down good documentation in this area,
specifically for the ARM side. Might be worth looking at the CACAO and

the OpenJFX runtime.

Below are some handy links for creating custom builds of OpenJDK and
OpenJFX.

- Building OpenJFX
<https://wiki.openjdk.java.net/display/OpenJFX/Building+OpenJFX>
- Building OpenJFX For ARM
<https://wiki.openjdk.java.net/display/OpenJFX/Cross+Building+for+ARM+Hard+Float>
- Official Debian GIT For OpenJFX <https://github.com/Debian/openjfx> (GIT
Hub)
- How To Build And Package OpenJDK 8 With OpenJFX On Linux
<https://github.com/hgomez/obuildfactory/wiki/How-to-build-and-package-OpenJDK-8-with-OpenJFX-on-Linux>
 (x86
only)

H Looks as though Debian officially has some packaging for OpenJFX,
however they would need to also have packaging for OpenJDK 8 too in order
for OpenJFX to work. Wonder if the packaging targets x86 only or if it
extends to ARM as well. Robert - If you have time can you please look into
this one.

@Robert - Are you referring to OpenJFX for a Deb package. See that there is
still no OpenJDK 8 package for Ubuntu/Debian, how annoying. OpenJFX (ARM)
is reported to work on OpenJDK 8 (ARM).

Building OpenJDK is not for the faint of heart. Attempting to do so would
likely result in a brain dump. Also a super computer would be required to
do the build in quick time, which I don't have.

Luckily doing a build of OpenJFX in desktop Linux is straightforward and
can be done in around 30 min on a Intel Core 2 Duo laptop for example.

Open source GPU driver is called etna_viv. Phoronix have an article
<http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=MTI3MjU> covering

confused with the gpu-viv-acc-fb package which only contains the closed
source Vivante GPU driver, not the open source one that I thought the
package had.

Re: [beagleboard] Re: JavaFX 8 on BeagleBone Black (SGX driver problem?)

2014-11-23 Thread Nick Apperley
You're not going to like this suggestion. Far better option to get JavaFX
and OpenJFX working and performing well is to run JavaFX programs on a
Wandboard <http://www.wandboard.org/> (eg the Dual version) since all the
Vivante GPUs are supported, even graphics acceleration via both GPUs. Sadly
the GPU on the BBB will *NEVER *be fully supported as long as Imagitech
<http://www.imagitech.co.uk/> refuse to completely release the
specifications for all of its GPUs.

Plenty of people are in the same situation with trying to get the SGX GPU
working on the BBB but to no avail. So much time spent trying to get the
GPU supported. To make matters worse the Beaglebone Foundation's upcoming
Beagleboard
X15 also contains a SGX GPU.
Extremely FRUSTRATING!

Much better off spending the money on a Wandboard to get JavaFX programs
running easily. Ubuntu/Debian have a package containing the open source
Vivante GPU driver which covers most of the Vivante GPUs (2D and 3D ones).
Easy as pie to install the GPU driver via *apt-get* (single step). Wish it
was the same with the BBB.

Why does the Beaglebone Foundation always insist on using a SGX GPU in
every board that gets released?

on Ubuntu. Got a sample JavaFX program (Ensemble) working by accident on
X11 by specifying a renderer that isn't supported by OpenJFX. Key part here
is that you *must* specify the unsupported renderer otherwise no JavaFX
program will start, and some errors will appear in the terminal. Automatic
renderer detection with OpenJFX is currently broken.

Big mystery as to what renderer is being used since it isn't listed in the
Monocle wiki page
on the OpenJDK website. X11 render doesn't work just in case anyone was
wondering. Note that there are no existing builds of OpenJFX available to
use on the BBB. A custom build must be created which is only compatible
with Java SE 8 Embedded and Java SE 8.

[beagleboard] Re: Starting Up Programs Automatically With LXDE

2014-11-17 Thread Nick Apperley
Automatically starting the shell script when logging into LXDE works fine
in a Lubuntu 12.04 VM. For some strange reason the same thing can't be done
on the BBB. No error messages appear anywhere, a real mystery. There may be
an issue with Java since some of the other shell scripts (not using Java)
start up without any issues on the BBB.

[beagleboard] BBB xylotex bbb_db25 cape to control a probotix V90

2014-11-12 Thread Nick Appelmans
Hi BeagleBoard group members.
I have a Fireball V90
(PBX RF breakout) that I purchased a couple of years ago. I built the kit,
got it running with an old windows box and then got hired and let it sit. I
made a stab at replacing the failing windows box with a beaglebone black
and xylotex bbb_db25 cape
.

Now, I'd like to interface the V90 and the xylotex bbb_db25 cape and was
wondering if there was someone else who has used this setup and posted
something on the web. So far my Google searches come up empty.

I have experience in 3d printing and electronics and am comfortable with
Linux. I am also planning to take a CNC course at our local community
college this spring since I am new to CNC. So, my question to the group is
has anyone heard of driving this system with a Beaglebone black and xylotex
bbb_db25 cape? If not, I would probably try to incorporate the information
in the http://probotix.com/cnc_downloads emc2 config files into Linux_CNC.
Can anyone give me some heads up on how to check the pins from the bbb_db25
cape for correct signals before I connect to the PBX RF breakout V90
control board?
Thanks for any thoughts you guys might have.

2014-11-06 Thread Nick Apperley
Noticed that there are no instructions provided for building the kernel in
the Ubuntu wiki like there is on the
Debian
wiki . Is there a
script to run that allows the kernel to be customised before running
*build_kernel.sh*? Under great pressure to get the BBB MIDI organ finished
in time for Xmas. Ended up being caught off guard by the *sequencer not
found* issue which pops up when running *aseqdump -l* (lists all MIDI
devices connected and recognised by Linux which is part of the *alsa-utils

Did the testing on a Linux desktop thinking that I was all set to do a
similar setup on the BBB. Unfortunately Murphy's law kicked in.

So incredibly easy for good plans to come unravelled in a blink of an eye.

[beagleboard] Re: Beaglebone Black and Web Servers?

2014-11-03 Thread Nick Apperley
Couldn't find anything conclusive about Django and the BBB (Beaglebone
Black). However I found this blog post

on Django and the Raspberry PI. Looking at the blog post it looks as though
Django doesn't use any native C/C++ libraries, which means it can be used
on both X86 (eg Linux laptop/desktop) and Arm platforms (eg BBB/Raspberry
Pi). Since the Raspberry Pi uses Debian some minor changes might need to be
made to install Django when using Ubuntu even though it is based on Debian.

Have answers to some of your questions. See the replies below:

(i) Apache
(ii)Linux (Debian or Ubuntu)

Not sure if Django can be installed on the BBB. Will largely depend upon
whether or not Django uses any native C/C++ libraries.

Re: [beagleboard] Creating The SGX Driver For Ubuntu 14.04

2014-06-22 Thread Nick Apperley
Created a demo Python script using Pygame . Ran the
script remotely on the BBB and discovered that the framebuffer can be
accessed by technologies other than QT Embedded (C/C++ only), however
DirectFB had to be used since access to the
driver API (EGL 2) is restricted to QT Embedded. Somewhat strange that the
driver supplied by TI has a library dedicated to QT Embedded (special
treatment), yet other technologies use the other libraries supplied by the
driver. Comes across as underhanded that other technologies except for QT
Embedded aren't given proper support.

TI *SHOULD* be following Google's example with Android by providing equal
API access to all regardless of the specific technology that is used.

Going to rebuild DirectFB with the following:

*./configure --with-inputdrivers=none \*

*--with-gfxdrivers=gles2,omap,pvr2d \*

*--enable-egl \*

*--without-tools --disable-static \*

*--prefix=/usr*

Which gl egl packages is DirectFB referring to? Noticed during the

am assuming is used on the BBB and not the pvr2d one.

This time when running the sample program locally a *segmentation fault*
message appears. Thought it might be useful to display the frame buffer
info (via *fbset -i*):

Just realised that I installed an experimental version of DirectFB from the
1.7 branch. Will try a stable one from the 1.6 branch. Hopefully that will
do the trick.

Found an Oracle article
<http://docs.oracle.com/javase/8/embedded/develop-platforms/javafx.htm> on
getting JavaFX 8 to work on a Beagleboard-xM which may be relevant to the
BBB. In the article DirectFB <http://www.directfb.org/> is used for
graphics rendering however it is done in software, which may be BRUTAL
performance wise. Might be worth trying the DirectFB method which could
work for other technologies that require EGL 2 support (eg Kivy
<http://kivy.org> for Python).

2014-06-19 Thread Nick Apperley
Robert,

Thank you for helping out, highly appreciated. Now I am at a difficult
position where the ball is in TI's court with properly implementing the EGL
2 APIs. No JavaFX programs can be run on the BBB via the frame buffer until
that issue is resolved. At least the SGX demos are working fine now so
there is some hope on getting the GPU utilised throughout the OS (Debian,
Ubuntu etc).

Re: [beagleboard] Creating The SGX Driver For Ubuntu 14.04

2014-06-19 Thread Nick Apperley
Now when I try to run the sample JavaFX 8 program (locally or remotely)
different error messages appear like the following:

===
Connecting to xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:22
cmd : cd '/home/debian/NetBeans_Projects//JavaFX_Test';
'/home/debian/ejre-1.8.0_fx/bin/java' -Dfile.encoding=UTF-8 -jar
/home/debian/NetBeans_Projects//JavaFX_Test/dist/JavaFX_Test.jar
*eglGetConfigAttrib failed!*
Graphics Device initialization failed for : es2
Error initializing QuantumRenderer: no suitable pipeline found
===

Getting very close towards the end goal (?). Spotted in the EGL ApI Docs

by chance that the *eglGetConfigAttrib* function according to the
description, *"return information about an EGL frame buffer configuration"*.
Discovered indirectly from the docs that JavaFX needs direct access to the
frame buffer and doesn't require *X Server* to be running. Right now I am
assuming that JavaFX can now create an EGL surface but cannot obtain
configuration information for the frame buffer which is needed to render
everything else graphics wise, hence an exception (error) is
thrown/displayed.

I suspect that the SGX driver is being very naughty by withholding vital
frame buffer configuration information needed for graphics rendering. Is TI
going to properly fix this serious issue?

echo "Usage: /etc/init.d/sgx-startup.sh

exit 0

Once the file was created the SGX daemon was started by running the
following:

*sudo sh /etc/init/sgx-startup.sh*

Run one of the SGX demos (eg Magic Lantern) and volla! :)

Just for reference with Debian on BBB where would the following be located:

   - *rc.pvr* daemon

Been trying to find the 2 mentioned files. Running *lsmod | grep omaplfb*

Tried running the Magic Lantern demo on Debian 7.5 with the 3.13.11-bone10
kernel (newly built) but had the same problems appear (*Unable to create
surface*).

Oh that's right, the rc.pvr daemon was already running but needed to be
given the equivalent of a reboot in order to avoid the *EGL_BAD_ALLOC *

Robert,

Did you check to see if the rc.pvr daemon is running before running one of
the demos? Did have the *PVRShell: EGL Error (EGL_BAD_ALLOC) *error but
managed to resolve it by restarting the rc.pvr daemon. Really weird that
the daemon doesn't start automatically during boot up.

Created a new thread on the TI E2E forum in relation to the surface errors

from TI.

Have a funny feeling that I am getting very close to remotely running the
sample JavaFX 8 program without any issues. Currently the following errors
occur when running the sample JavaFX 8 program remotely, provided the
rc.pvr daemon on the BBB is running:

Connecting to xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:22
cmd : cd '/home/ubuntu/NetBeans_Projects/JavaFX_Test';
'/home/ubuntu/ejre-1.8.0_fx/bin/java' -Dfile.encoding=UTF-8 -jar

*eglCreateWindowSurface failed! eglGetError 12291*
*eglMakeCurrent failed - 12297*
Failed to create EGLContext
Graphics Device initialization failed for : es2
Error initializing QuantumRenderer: no suitable pipeline found
java.lang.RuntimeException: java.lang.RuntimeException: Error initializing
QuantumRenderer: no suitable pipeline found

Seems as though the create surface problem is related to the issues with
trying to run any of the SGX EGL2 demos.

Both omaplfb and pvrsrvkm modules are already loaded. Also the rc.pvr
daemon is automatically started during boot. Where is *335x-demo* on Ubuntu
14.04?

Re: [beagleboard] Creating The SGX Driver For Ubuntu 14.04

2014-06-17 Thread Nick Apperley
Updated the OpenGL ES libraries so that the SGX ones are used. Ran the
Magic Lantern demo again locally and ended up with different error messages
appearing like the following:

ubuntu@arm:/opt/gfxsdkdemos/ogles2$ ./OGLES2MagicLantern
Can't open keypad input device (/dev/input/event0)
Exit message has been set to: "PVRShell: Unable to initialise EGL
".
PVRShell: EGL Error (EGL_BAD_ALLOC)
InitAPI failed!
PVRShell: Unable to initialise EGL

Do wonder if the SGX video driver was built properly.

Re: [beagleboard] Creating The SGX Driver For Ubuntu 14.04

2014-06-17 Thread Nick Apperley
Ran a different demo locally and had different error messages appearing
like the following:

=
ubuntu@arm:/opt/gfxsdkdemos/ogles2$ ./OGLES2ChameleonMan
Can't open keypad input device (/dev/input/event0)
*libEGL warning: DRI2: failed to authenticate*
PVRShell: EGL 1.4 initialized
Exit message has been set to: "PVRShell: Unable to create surface
".
InitAPI failed!
PVRShell: Unable to create surface
=

When trying to run the sample JavaFX 8 program locally the same error
message appears:

*libEGL warning: DRI2: failed to authenticate*

I have a theory that if OpenGL ES 2.0 can be initialised successfully in
one program then the sample JavaFX 8 program will run successfully.

Tried running one of the demos remotely (via SSH) and ended up with error
messages being spitted out (aka crash 'n' burn) like the following:

===
ubuntu@arm:/opt/gfxsdkdemos/ogles2$ ./OGLES2MagicLantern
Can't open keypad input device (/dev/input/event0)
*libEGL warning: DRI2: xcb_connect failed*
*libEGL warning: DRI2: xcb_connect failed*
*libEGL warning: GLX: failed to load GLX*
Exit message has been set to: "PVRShell: Unable to initialise EGL
".
PVRShell: EGL Error (EGL_NOT_INITIALIZED)
InitAPI failed!
PVRShell: Unable to initialise EGL
===

Very similar error messages when trying to run the sample JavaFX 8 program
remotely (via SSH). Robert can you please confirm if you can run one of the
SGX demos (eg Magic Lantern) successfully, and post the results from
running the *fbset -i* and *es2_info* commands (locally).

Ran glxgears and the tool reported an average of 32 FPS which is average.
Before loading the driver the average was 28 FPS. CPU load is still around
100%, something seems a bit off..

Robert,

The instructions in the last post did the trick with loading the driver (

rendering is being used. Running glxinfo reveals SGI once again :( Is
there an alternative CLI tool around that can provide details about the
