Actually, I'm working on that. When Donna wrote about Hugo's
difficulties, I remembered an apparatus that our local referral
surgeon (who does a lot of neck and back surgeries) used for his
neuro patients. I've mentioned it to Donna, and am trying to get
more info on it. Right now, he and I are playing phone tag, but
hopefully I'll have better luck on Monday. I have at least
determined that they made it themselves, so I may be able to get
plans or something of the sort. If so, this info will be available not
only for Hugo, but for any other berner in similar straits.

Stevie's Progress

2003-01-31 Thread Karen McFarlane
Dear List,
Well it is Friday night and I had to say good bye to my sister today.
Unfortunately she had to fly back home. I will miss her so much :( Stevie's
spirits seem a bit low today, but he might have just absorbed that from me
as I was sad over my sister's leaving. Physically he is about the same,
still trying to get around but he still requires a fair amount of
assistance. It was suggested to me to try Bach's flower remedy for his mood.
I would just like to hear from any other listers who have had any experience
with this. The baby food ideas that we received were a blessing. He
absolutely adores it. We thin it out a bit with some warm homemade broth and
he just lays with me holding the bowl under his chin and laps it up until it
is gone. It is going to be an absolute shock to him when I start expecting
him to actually eat DOG FOOD!! Oh my!! His ear is giving him a fair amount
of problems and he is still shaking his head alot. If this does not subside
then I will call and/or bring him to the vet tomorrow and see what else can
be done for him. His hair continues to come out quite profusely, I hope that
it stops soon. They said that it is trauma induced and should not be a
problem later on. I hope not, he had such a gorgeous coat since we started
giving him Omega 3 fatty acids in early December. (Thanks to this list!!) I
will update over the weekend. Love to All.

How about Berner rescue? Between the regional clubs' rescue efforts, Doug

feel-good potential, along with the potential for a lot of education.

agility

2003-01-31 Thread Mary-Ann Bowman
There is a lot that an eight month old can do in agility, but I would not
jump even 12 inches with a puppy. There are so many other things to learn in
agility that there is no rush to jump more than a few inches. Once the
growth plates close, jump training can begin in earnest.

Halo is three months old. Today she had a private agility lesson and we
worked on foot placement using a ladder and an obstacle course of various
cardboard tubes and jump poles, and contacts using a target. We also placed
her on the end of the teeter and gave her little rides while she ate treats
so that she gets used to motion. As I said, there is so much that a puppy
can learn in agility (and obedience) while they are growing up that jumping
does not need to be rushed. In addition to obedience and agility, Halo is
also tracking -- puppies are smart, willing workers if we give them fun and
interesting jobs :)

Denise, Deuce and all,
I started training Boomer at about 12 weeks. Of course I didn't have
him jump or do the dangerous stuff at that age. But the earlier you expose
to the baby teeter, tunnel, ladder on the ground (to teach him where his
feet are), etc., the easier it is later.
Boomer went to the big show in Cleveland in December in the preferred
classes so he didn't have to jump full height. He wasn't quit 19 months old
and, other than knocking off a bar here and there (He's still learning how
to jump. It's hard for a big dog to know where to gather himself between
jumps so that the take-off is in the right place.), he performed beautifully
and loved every minute of it.
Go ahead and get your 8 mo. old started. Just don't jump him over 12
inches at first. By the end of the class you might be able to do 16 if it's
elbow height or below. Don't have him go over the full height A-frame for a
while either. Coming down can be hard. And make sure he's steady before
trying the dog walk very high. You don't want him to fall off and hurt
himself. Hopefully these are safeguards that your trainer will have built
into the beginner class.

Occasionally she asks if I have any story ideas, and I could mention the

E-coli in urine - Trimethoprin-Sulfa

2003-01-31 Thread jeccjax
We have a 2 1/2 year old male who, while our two bitches were/are in season suddenly
had a watery-bloody smear on his foot and on the floor, which when drawn out from his
bladder by a catheter turned out to be lots of blood (the specimin was claret-colored)
in his urine and tested to be an e-coli infection. His prostate was a bit enlarged,
but our vet said they did not seem to be infected and she thought that was just the
result of the girls smelling good. The blood, though, seemed to be more than just his
being excited.

Has anyone had a similar problem? Our vet has determined that this is resistant to
Keflex (cefalexin) and to Batril, and has now prescribed a sulfa drug,
Trimethoprinsulfa, which she says works well in big dogs and horses. However, she
said it can cause dry eye in Dobermans - but she found no indication of problems with
the drug in bernese mountain dogs.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what causes this kind of infection? If there is
something I can do to prevent it, I certainly will. He's a picky eater, and doesn't
eat pooh, as far as I'm aware, so I'm at a loss as to how he would have contracted
something like this.

A friend has suggested that we give him colloidial silver in his water as an
antibacterial meaure - apparently it works well with urinary tract infections in
humans and some people have had good luck with it in dogs and other pets.

He sldo seems uncharacteristically whiney - so I wonder if he is in pain. I can't
tell if it is sypathy he wants because of the girls, or if he is really, really
uncomfortable. I tend to think he hurts and is looking to me to help make it better.

I would certainly appreciate any information anyone has on this new and troubling
problem. Including any experience - positive or negative - with this new drug.

Thanks.

While Flash has a limited repetoire, shake, high "4" (his dewclaws are

easiest to teach and won us some "Best Trick" classes as breed picnics was to
jump through a hoop. I got a large hula hoop at the toy store and starting
with it on the ground and using a treat as a lure, first got him walking
through it. Slowly I began raising it off the floor maybe an inch at a time
until. after a few weeks, it was about 6 - 8" off the floor. While you
wouldn't want to be jumping your young Berner, at that height, he really
wouldn't be jumping, but he would be conditioned to going through the hoop.
It's a great start on teaching the agility tire! Put a few streamers on the
hoop and it is very showy .

Hi,
I believe its American Cocker Spaniels that Oprah owns not Golden
Retreivers.

With the current climate I don't think the producers would be too receptive
about a show on Puppy Mills, seems to me the show has been very focussed on
"people" issues lately and once you're talking about governors lifting
death sentences and the threat of war and social roots I don't think dogs
are very high on the worry list right now. Media is too focussed on other
issues right now and a puppy mill story would get washed away. IMO Good
idea but poor timing for mass effect.

Potty confusion...I think!

maybe behalf could help out by helping to find hugo a set of wheels he could
practice with. it would truly be wonderful if we could be a resource to dogs
like hugo as well. it is truly a wonderful thing that behalf exists as part
of this wonderful community.

Can you all tell I've had a bit of insomnia tonight? Been up since 2:15 EST.

I just wanted to comment on the recent events re:Stevie and Karen. First I
love Stevie Nicks so you already had me right there. But, Karen I have been
following all your posts on Stevie. I am so happy he is making such
progress. But the recent post about BEHAF and Stevie possibly being a
Special Friend just blew me away.

First I was so happy that people had suggested that Stevie be made a SF of
BEHAF. That's exactly why the SF catagory was started. But to then hear that
someone offered to pay all your medical bills, Karenwell I was just
floored. Seriously I lost it.

To that most generous person, there is a special place in Berner Heaven
waiting for you.

Now I promise I will try not to send 3 e-mails on the same day again, Pat.

Much love to Karen, Stevie and the wonderful benefactor. And please remember
BEHAF, and the Special Friends catagory. It is in existence for those not so
fortunate as Karenthey either don't qualify or are reluctant to accept
funding.but have captured the sympathies of the berner community, that
is what the SF's category is for. All funds go directly to the designated SF
[any amount over the needed funds go into the BEHAF general fund] .

Much love to that special person who took care of Stevies medical bills.
And all my best too Karen and Stevie.

Our girl Ari is what you might call a "one trick pony". She loves to lay on
the bed with us watching TV, and once we said "okay...off now girl". Well
she put her paw over her eye.thinking we wouldn't notice the other 85
lbs of her. It was just so adorablenow we say "put your paw over your
eye" and she does.

Our one trick pony, Ari

Sorry, had to respond again. We taught Bacchus "little woofs". He will give
a little allmost soundless woof. Originally taaught himm by putting my hands
over my ears and saying "oh my.that is WAY too loud". Try a little
woof. LOL

Love them berners
