Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] SqueezePlay - how intensively should we be testing it?

2008-10-13 Thread awy

A couple of points:

I have been working with SqueezePlay (SP) audio on Linux. I have
implemented the various sync-related protocol enhancements. Sync
playback works well for me but subject to many of the usual caveats
with regard to synchronization and software players.

I recently fixed a problem with FLAC playback when the buffer is not
kept resasonably supplied, such as with transcoding of a radio stream
(AlienBBC is the prime example). This could cause high CPU use. (A
similar fix is required for the hardware players.)

[SlimDevices: Beta] Cannot connect to SC 7.3 Oct 13 build on ReadyNAS

2008-10-13 Thread hipitihop

I wanted to try the latest 7.3 build, mainly to see and test if I can
use the my new Squeezebox Duet controller as a player (headphone
output) which I read somewhere would be supported under 7.3 I have no
problems running 7.2 build on ReadyNas running RAIDiator 4.1.4
[1.00a042] however after I loaded todays build (13 Oct)
http://downloads.slimdevices.com/nightly/latest/7.3/SqueezeCenter_7.3~23529.bin
I cannot access it from my browser. My controller also fails to connect.
The server shows no errors and the plugin service claims to have been
installed and started with no problems. I recovered by reloading the
release 7.2 bin.

I know 7.3 is not yet supported so I just thought I would report this
in case it helps but I would dearly like to get it going so any
suggestions are welcome.

[SlimDevices: Beta] New preference default detection for language & music source

2008-10-13 Thread Michael Herger
In an attempt to make the SC wizard obsolete I've been working on improved
default behaviour on initial setup (SC 7.3). The two most important settings in
the wizard were language and music source. These are now detected from your
system if possible:

Language:
- Windows/OSX: use system language setting using system calls
- Rest: use locale setting to _guess_ the language

Music source:
- "audiodir": read user's default music folder (OSX/Win XP+ only)
- "itunes": if iTunes is installed an available, then use it (OSX/Win)
- "musicip": if MusicIP is listening on port 10002: use it (all systems).
-> use "quick" mixable status import only, if music folder is defined
-> use full import, if no music folder is defined

I'd be glad if you could test this on your various configurations. You'd have
to wipe the above settings from your server/itunes/musicip prefs files before
restarting SC.

[SlimDevices: Beta] Cleanup script

2008-10-13 Thread Michael Herger
I've added a simple cleanup script to 7.3 trunk, which should help you get rid
of your SC preferences, cache and mysql database. Simply run "cleanup.pl" from
the SC installation folder (Windows .exe still to be done), while SC is shut
down.

It currently supports only three parameters: --cache, --prefs, --all.

Please give them a try (but don't complain if you have to run a full re-scan
afterwards ;-)). Any comment is welcome. Thanks!

Ok. Can someone give me a step by step guide to getting SqueezePlay to play
audio (rather than just control an instance of SoftSqueeze)?

If I go the main menu and select 'Test Decode' I can get it to play the
various tones. If I go into 'Settings' -> 'Advanced' -> TEST_PLAYBACK I get
two options:

x.x.x.x (the ip.address of my server)
my.server.name (the name of the same server)

If I press 'Right' on the IP address, it remains in this menu. If I press
'Right' on the server name it goes back up to the 'Advanced' menu.

Is the fact that I'm running an instance of SoftSqueeze on the same machine
as SqueezePlay causing problems?

Thanks for any help.

There's no final plan yet. But latest was to have a summary of what had been
done (discovered configuration), what was going on (background scan), and where
the user could fix this (instructions) at first start. Consider this a one page
wizard with only the summary page displayed.

So instead of putting a setup wizard into the installer, it ends up
appearing the first time the user enters the web interface? Maybe not
a bad idea, but it probably comes with its own set of obstacles. One
disadvantage would be requiring the user to restart the server should
they not want iTunes or MusicIP integration.

What's the push for doing this - that it would be more cross-platform?

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Installer EXE naming, port checking, and firewalls

2008-10-13 Thread dwilliams01

No, never thought of that kind of a check. Actually, when I did the
reinstall of a nightly that I had already installed (for the pause
issue) it hit the firewall check again even though I'm pretty sure that
I responded with "allow always" the first time anyway.

So, if there was a seperate .exe that was called by the installer and
did the actual checking it wouldn't have to change and the firewall
wouldn't ask every time, right?

I think I've mentioned before, but it's worth repeating, that the instance
of SqueezePlay is far remote from the SlimCenter. I have the firewall opened
up sufficiently that SoftSqueeze works just fine from the remote location.

Casual consumers who use WMP, iTunes, etc, will not have music stored on
external HD's, NAS, etc. This one-off installation for new users sounds okay
to me.

If there is no music in the default My Music folder, then a scan won't take
long - it would almost be the equivalent of not setting a path and not running
the scan ;)

fine, but even a new user might want to set if SC should treat TPE2 as
album artist or not for instance, esp if that won't be the default,
since it has a huge impact on mp3 users, you know, the masses.

and thats just one such important option. if you don't, then you run

The install went perfectly and was seemless (which is more than I can

My PlayLog plugin creates a directory inside the cache dir, as that's
the only obvious place that I thought I could expect to have write
privileges. Your cleanup tool appears (read the source at
http://svn.slimdevices.com/repos/slim/7.3/trunk/server/cleanup.pl but
haven't run it) to wipe out that entire directory. I'd personally
prefer it if it were smart/gentle enough to only delete SC7 content
from the cache dir.

I don't know if this is a big deal -- I expect this is mostly a tool
for support to suggest when something's *very* broken. But from my
perspective it'd be nice if it were less aggressive.

Perhaps another option would be making another directory for plugins'
use?

You forgot --logs. :-) I try to remember to clear the cache and logs
when I stop my Windows server to do an SVN update. The logs only
because they tend to grow so large if you have any logging levels set
to Info or Debug.

I've always thought a means of clearing the file and/or artwork cache
would be nice to have as a function from within the web ui. It would
certainly make life easier for users who are asked to clear these
caches to see if it fixes problems in the web interface.

Resetting server prefs would be nice if it could be done from the web
ui, but I'm guessing SqueezeCenter's architecture makes this nearly
impossible. A first step, though, would be to make it possible to
reset individual prefs back to their defaults, which I don't think I've
seen anywhere.

No need to do so: we didn't disable the plugins before neither. We only

Ease of use, out of the box experience etc. We've seen a lot of new users
struggle with the number of questions asked during an initial setup (product,
SN subscription, SC installation & configuration). We'd like them to have the
quickest and smoothest setup possible. Rather have them play music within 15
minutes, with some steps postponed, than let them struggle 2hrs until all and
