Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Please Fix the Controller :(

2009-01-15 Thread Skunk

Part of the problem is that it works great for some people, like me, so
reproducing a problematic setup is probably not easy in the quality
control lab.

I would imagine they'd be interested in why it's not staying connected
on your setup, so consider contacting tech support and giving them as
many details as possible, which will also be in your own best interest
for getting this solved quickly.

When I've had troubles with the Controller disconnecting repeatedly it
usually proven worthwhile to look into the router config page and see
what it's doing. Are IP addresses conflicting when E.g. the Boom or a
laptop gets assigned? Does it help if the Controller has a fixed IP?
Try a different encryption method. Make sure it's not set to
reauthenticate every 7 minutes. See if there is more up-to-date
firmware available for it. Etc. Etc.

Good luck, and please post about your success or failure.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] r3309 oddity

2008-11-09 Thread Skunk

Well SqueezePlay was able to remember its name, but not before losing
the ability to contact SC for a few hours. It eventually fixed itself
by sitting in the cradle, with SC on and playing through Boom.

I was glad that it was able to fix itself, because in the past this
familiar lack of communication w/ SC meant I'd have to downgrade FW.
Maybe this issue is unique to me, but the common theme is always that
the players are shown and working through SC, but the players disappear
when you try selecting them with the Controller (or more accurately, try
selecting the music source). The wireless icon remains white the whole
time. Nothing will make the players show up except using the Win tray
icon to 'Stop SqueezeCenter'. They then magically and instantly show up
again, but still fail to connect to SC when restarted. It seems to me
something SC is doing is blocking the communication, but I'm open to
the fact that it could be my network. Maybe it's Zone Alarm, and just
shutting it down isn't enough. I suppose I should try uninstalling it
all together, and make sure it doesn't ever happen using the same
router but with a .deb SC. Sorry for thinking aloud.

One other thing I noticed was that I'm not able to get the loved track
feature to stick, but this happens using the Boom's panel too. Is this
just me as well?

My only issue with 3206 was the inability to initiate set up of my

usually is after resetting, but when I try selecting it I just get the
spinning wheel and connecting to network, and eventually a red wireless

the icon was white, I could see and control Boom fine, just not set up

When testing yesterday the same thing happened after a reset of the

downgrade to 7.2 again to get the Receiver working. Yet today, with the

after a few attempts at breaking it again. I'm kind of baffled, but
figure whatever the issue was it must have gotten fixed.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Stable squeezecenter 7.3 build for Duet?

2008-10-27 Thread Skunk

Stable beta is an oxymoron.

FWIW, my Duet was stuck on connecting to network all weekend and only
listed the Receiver by it's mac address instead of by name, and
wouldn't let me connect to it, which sounds like your problem. This
happened after I upgraded the Controller FW to 3206, and the three or
four nightly SC upgrades since then didn't fix the issue.

I ended up going back to 7.2.1, where the Controller still refused to
talk to the network long enough to downgrade firmware, so I SSH'ed the
r3080.bin firmware onto the controller, at which point it worked again.
Today I installed last night's 7.3 23694, the Controller updated back to
3206, and now all is fine.

It's not the hardware, but rather a software problem. You're using beta
software, and reverting to the previous release will solve your problem
of crackling sounds. The tech support people are probably not equipped
to answer beta questions yet, let alone questions about alpha features
like playback.

For the record, mine crackles as well, especially in the bass. It
sounds great when I'm streaming FLAC, but drops out too often to be
usable. Local Mp3 files and also files transcoded via bitrate limiting
on the player exhibit exactly what you're describing, but only if the
recording comes anywhere near clipping. E.g. on My Life In The Bush Of
Ghosts original pressing there are no crackles, but on the much hotter
mastering of the recent re-release it's very noticable.

I'm sure it's nothing to worry about, and if it bothers you too much
you should revert to officially released software before pestering tech
support, IMHO.

Every time they issue a software update it will revert to 100%, until
the volume issue is fixed. Your commands will be saved in WinSCP, so it

then you have a makeshift volume control in the dropdown menu.

The 1/29 windows.exe hangs before the wizard comes up if this process
is running (for me on win2k), but installs fine if it isn't.
Unfortunately the only way I've found to kill it is rebooting.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Hard to kill mysql.exe

2008-01-29 Thread Skunk

It's actually mysqld.exe, unlike the title. I don't think it's the
service the installer installs, rather a leftover process from the
previous install. You're right that I don't know where services control
applet is, but if I try to kill in task manager I get access denied. For
that reason I also can't delete Program Files/Squeezecenter. I'm running
SC as an app, but was getting the same leftover process/install hang as
a service (IIRC).

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Hard to kill mysql.exe

2008-01-29 Thread Skunk

Sorry. I just saw the 'Stop Squeezecenter' in slim tray, which does kill
the process. My problem was that out of habit I right click the tray
icon and click exit, and then kill any squeeze processes in task
manager before installing. I should have been clicking 'Stop
Squeezecenter', which is easier too.

It seems odd that an uninstall doesn't kill it, and also that right
clickexit on the tray icon doesn't exit Squeezecenter. Would there
ever be a reason to exit the tray app but not Squeezecenter?

It doesn't sound like it. You need to uninstall (and reinstall)
Squeezecenter itself, which can be done from the start menu by using
the shortcut StartProgramsSqueezecenterUninstall Squeezecenter, or
by going to the Squeezecenter folder at C:\Program Files\SqueezeCenter
and running the uninstall application (called unins000 on my version).

Don't forget to shut down the Squeeze process in task manager again
before uninstalling. I usually shut down the mysql and squeezetray
tasks before upgrading too, but I'm not sure it's necessary.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Updated New Default skin

2007-11-16 Thread Skunk

Actually getting a song to play next can be pretty tedious with long
playlists, even with the DD feature.

One thing that would make life easier is some kind of auto scrolling
feature, so that once you've dragged to the highest visible point in
the playlist it automatically pushes to scroll to the top of the list.
As it's implemented now, you have to drop the item, scroll up, and then
continue dragging to the top and repeat as necessary.

I haven't actually seen this done anywhere, but the behavior I'm
imagining is similar to selecting large amounts of text and having it
auto scroll to the top/bottom. Apps like Illustrator do it as well if
you drag something beyond the bounds of the window, but I haven't seen
it on the Web. Apologies if I'm suggesting the impossible.

Yes even a tiny amount of resizing pulls everything into line. Since my

It's not that big of a deal at any rate, since there is hardly ever

In Opera 9.2, also with more than one page of results, the entries are

Art in the playlist does seem a bit redundant, but I usually listen to
a single album rather than playlists or random mix, for which it will
probably be nice. A toggle like Jim mentioned would be nice.

I would prefer to see the genre listed as opposed to the bitrate in
status.html.

Also, like others I'm not a big fan of the extra click to get to my
local music- especially considering that I didn't even register for SN
or have any favorites set up- whether the page actually refreshes or
not.

The colors are nice though, and that's half the battle!

It may be fat, but it's fast. Browsing seems more fluid, even with my
meager 124 album directory. 6.3 used to freeze a lot (but continue
playing) and not allow me skip track with remote until the end of the
song. That never happens anymore, even when sending .wav to the
player.

The new volume control is great as well.

I believe with FW61 L/R channels are swapped. The analog outs sounded
worse in my system w/ 61, FWIW.

Oops, sorry: 61 only swaps channels when using the internal DAC.

Digital out should be ok. I didn't notice them sounding particularly
better than before though.
