Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Alarm not working with 8.3?

Question: On what player types does the alarm fail for you?

- Squeezebox Radio (official firmware 7.x)
- Squeezebox Radio (community firmware 8.x)
- Squeezebox Touch (official firmware 7.x)
- Squeezebox Touch (community firmware 8.x)
- SB Classic/Boom/Receiver/Transporter
- Other (eg. Raspberry Pi based)

I hadn't tried to test this until this morning. Running LMS 8.3.1 on
rPi4B. Boom Alarm playing an internet radio favorite worked properly
this morning. No issues, played for an hour (which is what I've set).

title is song title. track is track number. Be sure and look at
"extended tags" in mp3tag, in order to see all tag fields that might
exist. I think you probably are looking at extended tags, but just in
case.

In the past, this would happen to me, when everything appeared the same,
but one file had a "disc total" tag field, or something similar that
made that track different. (this might happen if I re-ripped just one
track at the time of ripping the disk)

I didn't notice that the style tag was being added when I first started
ripping with dbpoweramp. Then at some point I discovered the style tag
in my files (all long since deleted). The ones added via the online
databases were almost entirely junk. I recall a track on Jimi Hendrix,
"Are You Experienced" album having a long list of styles (with things
like:rock, pop, metal, reggae, world, soul, country, bluegrass,
blues, etc.). In other words, everything but the kitchen sink.

Maybe short, maybe not. I've seen some style tags that have 15 or 20
different styles listed in the same tag field.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] LSM splits one album into multiple albums with the same name

I've had this happen when I accidentally have a few tracks that have
disk number (1/1). This can happen with my dbpa ripper, when I rerip a
few tracks and forget to clear the disk number box. Those tracks with
stray disk number field get put into a different album, with same name.

I've never seen that on any of my players. Depending on location, I use
both windows LMS and linux (fedora on vortexbox and whatever
PiCorePlayer uses). And these servers can be rebooted without any of

Unless there are reasons to use APE (and not sure what they would be),
I'd remove the APE tags and only have ID3v2.3 tags in my mp3 files.

note that 7.9 has some info handling options that earlier versions of

Your discs don't have consistent tags. Load all the 4 albums up in a
single tag editor (mp3tag is a good one) and you'll see that album names
are different, some have artistsort tags, and some don't, and even
ARTIST and/or ARTISTSORT tags are different across the discs. Make all
these consistent and rescan.

no idea. I'm just repeating things that others have posted for doing
this (and that I've recently used myself). My limited understanding is
that the vortexbox is not using the latest LMS and has its own
repository for the program it is using. So one has to "disconnect" that
one and then install 7.9 from your website. That's what I had to do to
get the 7.9 nightlys too

no. that won't update to this version. Do these steps

Code:

yum clean all
  yum update
  reboot

after reboot and restart:

Code:

  rpm -e --nodeps logitechmediaserver logitechmediaserver-CPAN
logitechmediaserver-vendor logitechmediaserver-firmware-ip3k
  cp -a /var/lib/squeezeboxserver/prefs/server.prefs.rpmsave

  yum install

after install is done, do this:

Code:

Just to help you in debugging, I don't think the issue specifically lies
in VB2.3 and the LMS you're running. I use the identical release of 7.8
on my VB 2.3 setup. My iphone6 and ipad Air2 and ipad2 all see the cover
art with no issues. Much of the art is 1000x1000 jpg files. Also have a
Win7 and win8.1 setup, both running relatively recent builds of LMS
7.9 and observe no art problem. I don't have any other hints, but
didn't want you to assume that your VB setup was the definite problem.

Finally got the letter today via email:

   Dear Valued Listener,

Our records show that you may be streaming music over a
Logitech device. We are improving the way we stream the SiriusXM
Internet service which requires a compatible internet enabled player.
We suggest asking the manufacturer of your device about what's needed
to continue streaming SiriusXM. It's important to take action soon
because as of September 30 your streaming radio or receiver will not be
able to play the enhanced streaming service.

This has no effect on your account and the billing of your
SiriusXM Internet Radio subscription package. You can continue to
listen to SiriusXM over the internet by downloading our app on your
smartphone, tablet, PC, or current internet-connected sound system.
This also has no effect on listening to SiriusXM by satellite.

If you have any questions please call us at 1-888-601-6296
and reference your device.

Thank you for being a loyal SiriusXM listener.

Haven't tested myself, but I recall that:

1. if there is embedded art, this takes precedence over folder.jpg in
the album subdirectory
2. if there is embedded art in Track #1, this is the art used for
everything.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] 7.9 Problems/Bugs

2015-07-07 Thread garym

MYSTERY SOLVED. Thanks to all for advice. I don't ever create or use CUE
files, but after removing playlists, double checking file handling
options (as JJ noted) I still didn't get same track count. But then I
did a search in my music directory for *.cue files. And what do you
know, I found a single cue file on a recently ripped CD. I couldn't
figure out how in the world my dbpoweramp rip produced a CUE file (since
it is not set up to do so). But then it came back to me: I used
CueTools to repair that particular CD rip and CueTools created a CUE
file along with the repaired FLAC files. Removed the single CUE file,
re-ran with both 7.8.0 and 7.9.0 and all is identical.

(why the CUE file for a 10 track CD caused the track count to increase
by "3" seems odd, but anyhow, mystery solved). Thanks again for
suggestions.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] 7.9 Problems/Bugs

2015-07-06 Thread garym

I've done a cleaner test. Same Windows 7 machine, Same SATA attached
HDD. Only differs by whether running LMS 7.8.0, 7.8.1, or 7.9.0. See
below for all three scan outcomes. Differing numbers are highlighted in
RED. Summary: 7.8.0 or 7.8.1 produces 89,136 tracks (which is also
what foobar2000 on this machine counts as total). 7.9.0 produces 89,139
tracks (3 more). All else is same except for smart mix profile export
being "1" off in 7.9. That is, same number of files/directories read,
same number of new music files scanned, same total albums, total
artists, total genres, and total playing time.

So the question is why the difference in total track count in 7.9.0?

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] 7.9 Problems/Bugs

2015-07-04 Thread garym

::I've noticed an odd \"track counting\" issue with LMS 7.9 (on windows;
July 1, 2015 version).

When I do a full scan with LMS 7.9, I get reported track count of
*89,139* (see below). Oddly, the \"scanning new music files\" initially
reports finding *89,137* (and in LMS 7.8, the two numbers would have
been exactly the same in a full complete scan, not \"2\" different).

Using 7.8 I get 89,136 tracks (3 less). Pointing at the same HDD, I
also get 89,136 tracks in foobar2000. Using 7.8 I get 89,136 tracks
too. However, despite the track count difference, the number of
artists,* number of albums, and genres is reported as identical in both
7.8 and 7.9. And most interestingly, despite the \"3 track difference\",
the \"::Total Playing Time\\" is 8112:01:13 EXACTLY for both lms 7.8
and 7.9 complete \\"complete\\" database scans.

*note, the same after adjustment for the difference in how 7.9 can
report artists and album artists.

A poll associated with this post was created, to vote and see the

Question: AAC or MP3 - what would you prefer?

- I would chose AAC/192kbps over MP3/192kbps, even if seeking within
  the AAC stream wasn't possible.
- I would chose AAC/320kbps over MP3/192kbps, even if seeking within
  the AAC stream wasn't possible.
- I'd rather have seeking than higher quality sound.

And to clarify for my own case, I'm running LMS on a fedora linux

Actually, now that I dig deeper, my AAC radio streams show as converted

I'm confused. Just checking and I'm streaming a radio station to my
Transporter that is 48kbps CBR AAC. LMS reports it as an AAC file. Also
tried radioparadise AAC stream, and LMS reports it as AAC (128k). Here's
the URL
http://www.radioparadise.com/m3u/aac-128.m3u

Why are these playing on my TRANSPORTER?

i voted for 320AAC over seeking (then again, I have a fast internet
connection, a robust network, with all my devices connected via
ethernet). I rarely use seeking even when possible except with
podcasts. But I also use ip3k players a lot (transporter and booms).
But since I use LMS rather than mysb.com, I can also listen to AAC on
those devices.

Clarify that statement a bit. When you say they "come back" and mysb.com
"has got to know about them again", do you mean that the players again
show up in mysqueezebox.com as registered players? If so, I assume they
show in mysb.com as "not connected"? or do they show up as "Connected"?

If I login to my account at mysqueezebox.com and click on player tab, I
see all my players listed. In my cases they show as "not connected"
because they are all instead connected to my local LMS. Been a while,
but I recall that when I setup my players initially, I had to enter my
"mysqueezebox.com" account information. This was the registration.
Although I'm using LMS, some streaming requires the mysb.com
intermediary (siriusXM, pandora, etc.)

Hmmm, good question. But then again, I've had the internet connection go
down but continue to use my local LMS to play my own music to my
Squeezebox players. They are all hardware players (touch, transporter,
radio), but I can't see why software SB players would be any different.
And all my players are registered with mysb.com, etc.

Were you trying to play local music or internet streaming?

dbpa does have settings that allows users to select only the tag fields
they want to be included in rips. And one can also set different ripping
profiles so that some profiles save different tags, use different file
naming, etc. Once setup, the user doesn't have to fiddle with those
options.

I rip with dbpoweramp. It finds/adds composer tags about 40% of the
time. dbpa has "perfectmeta" which is 4 or 5 metadata sources which it
polls and then tries to provide the "best" metadata.

In my case, in the LMS settings I change the default name from "Various
Artists" to "COMPILATIONS" in the LMS > Settings > my music >
"When compilation albums are grouped together, they appear under
"Various Artists" by default. You can change that name below."

I also set it to "group compilation albums together"

In this way, I end up with the Compilations browsing under ARTISTS under
something called Compilations (rather than Various Artists). And
anything under Various Artists in my Artists Listing is something I have
definitely given the ARTIST or ALBUMARTIST name Various Artists (and
thus this does NOT include things I've labeled Compilations). I also
leave Album Artist generally blank for compilations rather than
including VA there. Because I use the Compilation tag, the compilations
are organized properly in any case.

yes, they appear sorted under ALBUM ARTIST (e.g., the Bob Dylan comp
shows up when browsing albums under Bob Dylan as artist). (In options,
I change the name of compilations to "compilations" rather than various

I might be missing the full point here (as I'm just jumping in this
thread in the middle), so I apologize if I'm answering the wrong
question.

But regarding the above statement, I have lots of albums that are marked
with compilation tag (value =1) and also have ALBUM ARTIST tag filled in
with something. They show up as I expect in LMS (under compilation and
also tracks under any of the individual track artists, if such track
artist has at least one other non compilation album in LMS.

p.s. In my case, I rarely fill in the Album Artist on a compilation, but
do when I want it to show up in a special way when browsing (e.g., I put
"Bob Dylan" as Album Artist on a Bob Dylan tribute album. This way, I
see that Album if I browse Bob Dylan albums, even though Bob Dylan is
not on any of the tracks).

90% of my browsing is using SqueezePlay 7.8 (on win7 laptop). the other
10% is iPeng on iphone or ipad (and sometimes squeezepad on ipad).
Server is Vortexbox (linux). I find the squeezeplay better as when I
select artist (mostly) or album, I can quickly scroll the entire list vs
the webGUI where I have to go to different pagesRarely use the
webGUI except for accessing settings (to rescan, update plugins, etc.).
Use firefox as browser.

most painful action (none really), but opening New Music can
occasionally hang (and even interupt music playing briefly). Also,
album art can sometimes take a little bit of time to populate.

I (sorta) like this idea. But it would require me to use mp3tag to batch
create Album Artist tag fields for all my compilations.

Without rehashing the 1000s!! of posts on the issue of compilations and
AlbumArtist, it would take some adjustment on my side. I'm one of the
folks that leaves Album Artist empty for compilations (but does set the
compilation tag to a value of 1). This way I don't see any "various
artists" listing in my artist listing. I use settings to tell it to
group my compilations together and label it "Compilations". This
category shows up at the top of my artist listing and contains all my
compilations. The only time I use Album Artist for a compilation is if I

in your LMS webGUI, go to settings (lower right), then click on basic
settings tab, then on that page you should see the directory location
that is entered for playlists. Look in that directory on your computer
and email one of those playlist files to michael. Send one that you

understand. too bad that I'm stuck in limbo. I wonder if there's any way
to set up mysb.com where it works with the firmware for 7.8 players. I

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] 7.8 official release plans?

2014-01-30 Thread garym

I use 7.8 at home with my Vortexbox server. The value for me of a
"released" 7.8, is that at my weekend place I'm stuck with 7.7.x because
I often leave the VB there unplugged and leave players setup to work
directly with mysb.com for others to use. So if I used 7.8 there on the
VB, then switched to mysb.com, there is the back and forth firmware
updates/downgrades to some of the players. This just confuses folks, so
I leave on 7.7.x there. If mysb.com was also "on 7.8", that solves my
switching problem.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Why many men with an equal number of trunpets?

2013-11-02 Thread garym

Just updated my win7 box to 7.8, todays posted version (nov 2) and I get
exactly the same results as you. On the wegui on the left side of
screen, if I click on ARTISTS, I see "man with trumpet" pictures. And
clear and rescan only shows this:

Discovering files/directories: E:\All Music Files (83262 of 83262)
Complete 00:01:58
Scanning new music files: E:\All Music Files (75375 of 75375)
Complete 00:50:31
The server has finished scanning your media library.
Total Time: 00:52:29 (Saturday, November 2, 2013 / 11:19 AM)

With Home > Albums, I see all the right artwork.I see the "man with
trumpet" on my vortexbox (fedora linux) 7.8 (oct 15 or so build) as well
when looking at Home > artists. Now that I think about it, I think it
used to just be an artist list rather than this picture. But this all
probably relates to me having the plugin "music and artist information
5.1" installed (and I haven't done any settings with it).

*The larger issue is that it didn't seem to scan for smart mix plugin on
this windows7 install of 7.8 (as noted above). And if I went to the
smart mix plugin and forced a reexport, it didn't do anything either. If
I try to play a smartmix, it works, but ONLY plays spotify tracks (and
no local tracks). This makes sense given that it doesn't seem to have
done an export. *

yes and no. I know NOTHING about linux. I purchased my Vortexbox
Appliances from "Small Green Computer" (a vortexbox dealer in the US).
The unit is essentially a headless/keyboardless low-power PC. It runs
the vortebox system. Vortexbox system is Fedora linux based and has
several tweaks and preinstalled programs to make serving audio or video
to squeezeboxes, sonos, upnp players, etc. It also has its own built in
VB PLayer (that essentially emulates a squeezebox playerone version
they use is based on squeezelite). It also does automatic ripping, etc.
but I don't use it for that (I use dbpoweramp). One can also simply
install the Vortexbox system on any old x86 computer and get the same
outcome. One doesn't need to know anything to do this other than to burn
the image to a CD and insert the CD in a PC and follow a couple of menu
items to install. The VB install already has LMS, LAME, etc. You
control the VB from a webGUI from any computer on the network. It has a
very user friendly webGUI for doing certain things (backing up files,
etc.).

so to summarize and answer your questions: it has a simple setup and
configuration interface (no linux required); you can install 7.8 (I use
7.8). There are vB builds at the nightly location. these are the REDHAT
rpm installs. Vortexbox also has a repo location with a 7.8 LMS version
that is based on the community 7.8 and can be installed easily (that's
what I used). Already has LAME and can easily handle transcoding, etc.
It supports (and I use) Triode's 3rd party plugin.

But this is a bit of DIY if one wants it to be. Its not "locked down"
like ReadyNAS units. One can add all sorts of stuff to it if one wants
and tweak it etc. I don't do any of that. I use it to server about
75,000 files (flac, mp3, aac) to my various Squeezeboxes. It is
blazingly fast in terms of interface (browsing, etc.). I also use it to

I use it to serve videos to my ROKU on my TV. It can also rip CDs and

an mp3mirror from FLAC files. And it automates an incremental backup of

Ikabob. Have you seen others reporting the same issue. I don't use 7.8
so can't comment. But based on my (perhaps faulty) recollection, you're
the only one I've seen posting reporting this sync issue in 7.8. Are
you sure this is a 7.8 problem and not something on your end. For
example, for some odd reason (which I could never figure out), on an
older install of LMS 7.7.2 on a WinXP machine I was using temporarily, I
could never get sync to work perfectly without being off. Works fine on
a different laptop running LMS 7.7.2, works fine on my vortexbox
(linux), etc. It just would not work reliably on that one WinXP machine
(even after reinstalling 7.7.2, etc.). A mystery.

p.s. Of course if others are reporting the same thing with 7.8, then
perhaps it is a widespread 7.8 issue. Just haven't noticed others
reporting this

Yes you can update normally to latest firmware without it converting to
UE. Converting to UE requires specific steps.

search the forum for whitebear. This is one approach for using LMS with
DLNA devices that seems to work better than the official DLNA server.
And in general, one can have FLAC files decoded on the server to PCM by
changing the settings in LMS > SETTINGS > ADVANCED > File Types. Not
sure if this also works when LMS is being used as a DLNA server.

H, so this speaks to having an Album Artist for every album,
compilation or not (I knew this was some folk's preference, but
didn't realize the mechanics of LMS noted above).

and I am looking forward to that point in my life when the term DVD and
CD have no more meaning to most people than the term "8-track tape".
That is, when all my CDs and movies are lossless computer files and all
future purchases don't involve a physical object.

That said, I probably never enjoyed Pink Floyd's Meddle as much as I
did upon its initial release, listening to it with my friends on the
8-track player in my piece of junk 1969 Austin American, with
self-installed cheap speakers in the package tray.

Aha! Interesting. other than dropping one or the other in the tray of

very stupid question. To rip a bluray, I assume I need a bluray disc
reader in my computer, or can one rip a bluray from a DVD reader (I'm
thinking that maybe it only needs to read the "data" on the disc, not
"play" the bluray).

h, odd. I'm assuming that all the new music stuff has already been
seen by LMS with either a "new and changed scan" or a "clear and
rescan" versus just adding files to the library directory location then
choosing NEW MUSIC?

I see only a few seconds (NOT minutes) of delay myself and my new music
limit is 500 (which I think is 500 albums not tracks). No longer than
clicking on a genre with lots of albums....

hmmm, I'm having a hard time trying to test this, as any artist I have
that ONLY shows up on a compilation doesn't show up in my artist list
or my custom browse artist list (this is one of the options I believe
and I like this outcome). They only show up when I click on a

not sure what you mean. If I click on an artist in browse artist menu,
I get a list of all the albums that artist is on (their own albums as
well as any compilation albums that the artist appears on). Isn't this
what you would want? Or are you saying your list shows ALL compilation
albums, even if artist is not on them? Be careful, as it may be showing
albums where your artist is a COMPOSER of the song.

I thought I would run 7.7 through the paces with a large library. My
normal library is about 66,000 files, but I still have my original
digital copy of my library from my original "ripping to mp3" days and
this is over 200,000 mp3 tracks. (p.s. I'm working through all my
discs gradually re-ripping to FLAC, but you can see that this will take
me years!).

I did this at the office where I'm running 7.7 on a fairly new desktop
with win7(64), i7 chip. Files are on a 2TB USB 2.0 external drive.

When I press the power button, my right side display (VU meters) goes

This sounds like the Transporter is becoming disconnected from SbS. On
my Transporter, if it loses a connection to SbS (maybe I've turned off
the computer running SbS, rebooting it, or something), it will first
show a message that it is trying to find the server (or something like
this), then the transporter screen goes black/blank. I've only ever
had this when the SbS was down/off. So I've not seen the problem.

Aha! p.s. I just did a clear and rescan on my office machine and it
did 56,000 audio tracks in 20 minutes. A new record!

Hmmm, this is not the case on my install. I installed rc2 on my win7
machine today. From the tray, I have the option to "START LOGITECH
MEDIA SERVER" if it is not running. When it is running, I see the
option to "STOP LOGITECH MEDIA SERVER". And both work as expected.

but once you stop from the tray (and it has stopped), do you get the
option to start. That's what I'm seeing. I don't see BOTH options at
the same time. Only the option to go to the state that I'm not in at
the time.
