Mine's running fine. Andy first copied over 7.6/trunk, before he then

pulled 7.6/lms on top of it. But it should be complete now.

Should be complete, but the Media/Scan/Scan.so files were missed in the
CPAN tree for 7.7. They can, however, be copied from 7.6lms.

this location should have a Scan.so, for example:
http://svn.slimdevices.com/slim/7.7/trunk/server/CPAN/arch/5.10/i386-linux-thread-multi/auto/Media/Scan/

Not sure what else may have been missed.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] SBS 7.6 svn 30689 problem

2011-05-01 Thread kdf

It was bug 16138. A fix to at least correct the log dump is in r32384.

Instead of a failed query, whatever is there should show up and if
there is some process that was consistently causing this problem, it
may show a different symptom that will be more able to point to the
root cause of the issue.

Some time shortly before Chris posted about ending internal full-time

response to some user complaints that the product selection was hard to read

impossible to search for specifics, but at least it is made a little bit easier

You are correct. That is exactly what it means and why the backtraces are
executed. You'll want to contact the author if you are anxious for an
update. Most often, deprecation notices will hang around for at least a
full release cycle. If you use beta/nightly versions, of course, you never
know when the cut will be made.

-k

 Thanks for the reply.

In the log output I've shown above, the only plugin referred to in the
backtrace is 'Sugarcube'. Does it mean that in this case, Sugarcube is
the offending plugin. Sorry if it's a dumb question, I've not managed to
work out and what backtraces mean yet.

I get the same failure. I'm surprised you get 7.4 to build as I've
been unable to build for months. If you check for the files it's
reporting as not found, copy them to the build directory. You will
get further. Mine eventually fails looking for asound. The
instructions for the build environment on linux are long outdated and
there hasn't been a lot of focus on getting SP to build on the linux
desktop. 7.5 only recently got a batch of merges from 7.4 and I would
suspect not all have been done as there are some differences that
don't look like they were recent design changes.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] 7.4 Desktop Squeezeplay builds with Radio/Touch/new Controller UI now available

2009-10-16 Thread kdf
As part of the 7.4 development, the skinning code was more or less
completely overhauled to make it more readily scalable for controller,
touch and radio formats. This meant that the skins made specifically
for squeezeplay desktop were lost. As you might imagine, the priority
is on everything working on the hardware first. More than one
developer commented on really wanting to be able to spend more time
giving the desktop version a bit more love, but there has not been time.

If the new skinning code is as scalable as intended appearance, then a
larger/expandable version should be along when time permits.

There is little difference for the moment. 7.5 was only recently

work already started in the 7.5 branches (like the embedded version of

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] On Flickr behavior

2009-09-11 Thread kdf

If it's giving weird results, seems worth leaving it out for now. From
what little I know of Flickr, it seems to me that a more interesting
option would be the ability to enter a tag (or even multiple) and pull
images based on those. That seems to be in line with the ethos of
flickr, and if an particular Flickr user is thorough enough to tag their
own work with their id, then the artist option still exists through
that.

If you try running it, are you seeing anything in the task manager process

Is anything showing up in the Event Viewer, specifically the Applications

I've been running recent enough SP builds with the branch code for some

 Hi there,

just tried this on XP SP3 and I get no output as well. Looking in the
Task Manager there is nothing in the applications listed and nothing in
the processes under S (I'm guessing the process name is something like
 SqueezePlay).

Under processes, it's squeezeplay.exe. Under applications, it is
SqueezePlay Beta.

You should check both tabs as the applications tab doesn't show all
processes.

Kevin, try installing it again to a different folder and running that
version. Something must be missing. A dll maybe? If you compare the
two installation folders you may be able to tell what it is.

Two files are missing in a fresh install.
/mime/core.dll
/socket/core.dll

copying these from the older install location makes it work. Looks like
the project file must have lost these along the way.

After updating my controller to 7296, it started with a different
wallpaper. After settting it back to Black, I noticed it changes
spontaneously to Encore and back to Black when I walk through the
entries in the Choose Player menu. Curious. Maybe the menus are somehow
 coupled.

Wallpaper is player specific, so you can have a different background for
each player that you are controlling and thus easily tell which player is
active without actually having to look up 2 and read anything :)

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Changes to ip3k menu in tonight's 7.4 (8/26)

2009-08-27 Thread kdf

Info Browser is somewhat hidden on the latest menu layout - I think it
should be kept as it does something differnet from a news ticker. It is
also the only option which allows additional parsers for displaying
 other information.

can the ticker not be integrated into info browser as the screensaver
part? RSSNews currently allows reading directly AND the ticker
screensaver. Surely the direct read is redundant and merging them into a
fully functional sing app might relieve some of the confusion.

The only drawback would be that you end up with a single pref for feeds.
That could be solved by having the list with a checkbox for which ones to
enable for ticker mode

There may be other reasons to keep them separate.

Also essentially feasible using checkboxes. A list of Feeds, then check
which ones are enabled for browser, and which for ticker. You could then
have stock prices, football scores ticking by, but skip them when you want
web or SP screen-based browsing and just go to the full stories about the
latest football brawl ;)

2009-08-27 Thread kdf
 Hi kdf slim-m...@deane-freeman.com,

Would require a slightly more awkward UI to set up, esp. via installing as
an app on a classic player.

How about two apps that use a common support system. If either one is
installed, you get a UI to add/delete feeds from the server list. Then
each app lists those feeds and you choose which are enabled for that app.
Both currently use XMLBrowser at one level or another, so it could be as
simple as letting XMLBrowser handle the UI for adding/editing feeds and
the UI for it is only exposed once you have something that makes use of
it.

Info Browser would then only show up on browse menus, while Info Ticker
would only show up as a screensaver. There is really little reason to
keep the ip3k RSSNews menu item for browsing.

with SQLite.

Not really false positives. The problem is that by default, the
scanners would access the temp files used by mysql. Mysql didn't
like it when it wanted to erase or add to those files and found that
it was locked up by another process. Thus, the transaction would
fail. No bad name, just a limitation of using that service for
something that seems to need the db on demand, beyond what it can
stand to wait for virus scanners to move along.

That's true. Most people seem to be saying that SQLite is slower
than their MySQL setup, but that the scanning code is faster; the
net gain seems to be that the overrall scanning process is a bit
slower.

I'm using trunk, so I haven't run it myself yet, but I recall reading
that the debugging was on by default. This makes scanner speed less
than it could be.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] miss a master volume on the controller to all my clients at once

2009-05-26 Thread kdf

When I started working on this in iPeng a few weeks ago I tried it.
The sync option now fixes the volume to the same LEVEL on all
devices, no way to relatively adapt individual volumes.
It will take over the level from the sync master.

Makes sense in the context of how volume is handled more recently. Used
to be more or less linear ramping, and also had both relative and absolute
controls. Ramp changed, and more recently the volume became controlled by
an absolute value rather than +/- single steps (UI got messy trying to
balance all variations with the steps and direct control). And, as peter
has pointed out, it's not a direct match any more.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Merging Plugins and Extension Downloader tabs ?

2009-05-26 Thread kdf

The Extension Installer should not even be a plugin... it should be a
basic native function of SC that can be enabled/disabled.

This is exactly what it is. Just that anything that can be, as a module,
enabled or disabled is handled through the plugin API. Native plugins
are Slim/Plugin/* modules, while third party are installed in Plugins, or
the cache (in the case of installation using ED). I highly doubt it would
be perceived as all that much simpler if there were two pages for
accessing enable/disable of featuresets.

Much of the functions you know are done through the plugin API now simply
because it's matured into a API that can simply hook into the various UIs
and maintain a feature set in one module. Examples: song scanning,
favourites UI, Random Mix, and most of the online music services.

This indicate a conflict, which would have been also noted when you do svn

while you check out (tf, for example uses the SD repo version in full -
theirs-full).

svn revert also works if you want to simply clean the junk out.

If they are the result of local modifications, then you can fix them by

At least now it comes from official resources. The old third-party

Now, I have to say that tracking the activity of bugs is a bogus way
to watch things. A year or so ago, I was the most frequent single

just organisation, based on having very little time to search. Now
that there are dedicated resources and a wider audience (arguably
filing lamer bug reports) the activity falls more in line with
prioritising and based on effort of the now rather large internal
group of developers (working full-time and far faster than third-party
folks can keep up with).

Sadly, while this does mean that voices, complaints etc are more
readily heard and acted upon, it also means that the feedback loop is
wider and the consideration of a wider audience delays actions.

Those who have posted about wanting a mainstream market acceptance,
welcome to the brave new world. It's nice to see the success, sad to

That upgrades the bootloader, but I don't think that gives you a valid

There is a different tool that you need to have the right uuid to
match the mac.

In my case, I got one from Dean and had to use a tool to write to the
non-volatile memory on the controller (with a number of warnings that
I only get a couple of chances to get it right)

2008-12-19 Thread kdf

Now 7.3 is out in the wild and 7.3.1 is to follow...
Where do we go to next in the nightlies? 7.3.2 or 7.4

There is now a 7.3.2 target in bugzilla, so the 7.3 trunk should be
changing to 7.3.2 in the nightlies.

I'm confused about 7.4 - is it worth installing, or will it disappear
in favour of an 8.0 beta?

7.4 is supposedly not in the cards. Everything that was 7.4 is moved to
8.0. The current state of the 7.4 trunk is not much different from what
is currently in 7.3 right now.

There doesn't seem to be a firmware directory for 7.4, and what happens
 with the Extension Downloader?

Many plugins will not be set to support 7.4 currently, and firmware isn't
being built for 7.4 yet. Given that 7.4 is is now really 8.0, it may not
get sorted until there is a good moment to migrate everything to an 8.0
trunk. I would expect the current focus is to get 7.3.1 tested and
released.

Users do have the option of the tar.gz, which does actually extract
without much effort in windows. After all, they have to install
Active Perl anyway, so they must have at least some level of
competence beyond knowing where the power button is. I think that not
having the source automatically included with the exe means less drive

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] What do you do with these updates?

2008-11-27 Thread kdf

This is probably dumb, but what can you do with these updates and how
 would you install them?

You shouldn't need to install them. They get installed where they need to
be when you install Squeezecenter.

Under 7.3 firmware updates boom 39.bin or receiver 54.bin. I put the
in the same place I put the updates for SBC, but that didn't do
 anything.

They may not, as these are firmware images for the players.
receiver_54.bin is for the Receiver part of the Duet, boom_33.bin is for
Squeezebox Boom. By default, the receiver will update automatically when
you start the server. Boom may or may not depending on a setting in the
setup mode shown when powering up. These firmware images are tightly
matched with the version of Squeezecenter. It is not intended that you
ever run a firmware from one version of SC with another, even if they are
just nightly builds.

Normally the .bin files are kept in the Firmware folder. This is in
contrast with the Controller images, which are a complete packaged OS and
can be updated independently of SqueezeCenter.

They can be cool, but they don't update nearly as often as everything
else simply because they are closed-source and have much more
consequences if they fail. To see that any specific version is adding,
you can check the changelog for the SC version you are using, or watch
the checkins mailing list to see the notes as they come in.

As for what they may addressed in future, check bugzilla and look for
those bugs that are set specifically for a player type as the
component, rather than SqueezeCenter or Controller. Another clue is
that they are assigned to felix or sean.

What's the answer next time,
just ignore the update on the Remote?

Avoid using pre-release (7.3) nightly builds is one option. There are
stable versions (7.2.1), and unstable versions (7.3). You choose. If you
go with the unstable, then you get to play with the newest but you also
then need to accept that it is under construction (especially the audio
playback which is only targetted to be BETA level for 7.3 release)

You can also turn off software updates in server settings, then restart
the server. This will cause the server to stop downloading any updates.

Also, any idea how to get this
 update out of my system?

as mentioned on many other recent threads, press vol+ while booting will
return you to previous firmware.

Yes, the setting is in the web interface. Click the settings link in

Use the pulldown near the top left to select software updates.
Choose the don't check for software updates option and click the

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] FW jive_7.3_r3330 is broken!!

There is no way to cancel an update once you are told you need one. You
can however, stop the update from being requested. Using the web
interface, look in server settings-software updates and turn off the
automatic software updates option. This will stop SqueezeCenter from
downloading the latest Controller update.

Overall, once you get yourself a Beta that you are happy with, and you
are nervous about the effect of another update, don't download a newer
Beta. The problem with avoiding some updates while installing others
is that you MAY find that certain things don't work well together.
Asking for help here in those cases, you will almost always be told to
make sure you have matching updates for everything.
