Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] On Flickr behavior

2009-09-11 Thread kdf

If it's giving weird results, seems worth leaving it out for now. From
what little I know of Flickr, it seems to me that a more interesting
option would be the ability to enter a tag (or even multiple) and pull
images based on those. That seems to be in line with the ethos of
flickr, and if an particular Flickr user is thorough enough to tag their
own work with their id, then the artist option still exists through
that.

If you try running it, are you seeing anything in the task manager process
list?

Is anything showing up in the Event Viewer, specifically the Applications
Tab?

I've been running recent enough SP builds with the branch code for some
time. I do, however, have Visual Studio installed which may be supplying
libraries if the build isn't providing them properly in the installer.

Under processes, it's "squeezeplay.exe". Under applications, it is
"SqueezePlay Beta".

You should check both tabs as the applications tab doesn't show all
processes.

Two files are missing in a fresh install.
/mime/core.dll
/socket/core.dll

copying these from the older install location makes it work. Looks like
the project file must have lost these along the way.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Silence $alarmNext warning?

2009-09-26 Thread kdf
I would guess it depends on what screens are on what players at the
time. I got quite a few every minute before I patched my local copy.
I think James didn't notice it was different from the other two
sections of the patch, which were only for logging (although they also
appear a lot on every startup)

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] 7.4.1 or 7.5

2009-10-06 Thread kdf

There is little difference for the moment. 7.5 was only recently
created based on 7.4.1. 7.4.1 will get bug fixes for issues in the
7.4.0 release. 7.5 will get more substantial design changes based on
work already started in the 7.5 branches (like the embedded version of
Squeezebox server). 7.4.1 should remain stable if you keep up wiht
nightly builds. 7.5 may break without notice.

I found a bug that was causing a problem writing the settings files for
squeezeplay. I'm going to put the fix in later today and that should
help with home menu settings and it seems to also help with the
connection problems, at least it has for the ones I've been seeing for
windows builds of SP.

Try out tomorrow's 7.4 Windows Executable.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] 7.4 Desktop Squeezeplay builds with Radio/Touch/new Controller UI now available

2009-10-16 Thread kdf
As part of the 7.4 development, the skinning code was more or less
completely overhauled to make it more readily scalable for controller,
touch and radio formats. This meant that the skins made specifically
for squeezeplay desktop were lost. As you might imagine, the priority
is on everything working on the hardware first. More than one
developer commented on really wanting to be able to spend more time
giving the desktop version a bit more love, but there has not been time.

If the new skinning code is as scalable as intended appearance, then a
larger/expandable version should be along when time permits.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Building squeezeplay 7.5 from svn fails

2009-10-17 Thread kdf
I get the same failure. I'm surprised you get 7.4 to build as I've
been unable to build for months. If you check for the files it's
reporting as not found, copy them to the build directory. You will
get further. Mine eventually fails looking for asound. The
instructions for the build environment on linux are long outdated and
there hasn't been a lot of focus on getting SP to build on the linux
desktop. 7.5 only recently got a batch of merges from 7.4 and I would
suspect not all have been done as there are some differences that
don't look like they were recent design changes.

If you are watching the 7.5 builds of squeezeplay, any build after

It's harmless for now. What it means is that you need to get updates
for your plugins. Eventually the commands mentioned in your log will be
fully removed and the plugin will no longer work unless the problem

You are correct. That is exactly what it means and why the backtraces are
executed. You'll want to contact the author if you are anxious for an
update. Most often, deprecation notices will hang around for at least a
full release cycle. If you use beta/nightly versions, of course, you never
know when the cut will be made.

Some time shortly before Chris posted about ending internal full-time
management of bugzilla, the products all got shortened. This may have been in
response to some user complaints that the product selection was hard to read
when they all showed up as "Squeezebo..." in lists. It's still near
impossible to search for specifics, but at least it is made a little bit easier
to read larger result sets to find what you need to find.

This is a sign of bad interaction with an antivirus program. Most of these
have options for excluding certain file types from the anti-virus scan. Set it

likely the same for all of the non-default skins as they are using the

none of this has directly changed in 18 months or more

I think they are still there, but for some reason it is being pushed down

30609, 7.5 trunk and recorded against bug 16062. Hopefully that won't mess
with the auto-merges forward. I did the patch during the day where I only have
one version being updated. svn through a firewall is just too painfully slow
to handle more. I update only once a day and it slows everything down for 20

It was bug 16138. A fix to at least correct the log dump is in r32384.

Instead of a failed query, whatever is there should show up and if
there is some process that was consistently causing this problem, it
may show a different symptom that will be more able to point to the
root cause of the issue.

Should be complete, but the Media/Scan/Scan.so files were missed in the
CPAN tree for 7.7. They can, however, be copied from 7.6lms.

this location should have a Scan.so, for example:
http://svn.slimdevices.com/slim/7.7/trunk/server/CPAN/arch/5.10/i386-linux-thread-multi/auto/Media/Scan/

Not sure what else may have been missed.

It shouldn't be. The bug was closed off and protected because a
helpful user accidentally posted a log that hadn't been cleaned of
personal info.
The comment at fix time notes that you must clear your preferences if
you have been affected by this problem. the prefs file must be cleared

It seems to me that you re asking is for the scan to force musicIP to
refresh its database as part of the clear/rescan, which is exactly
what this bug (and related thread) talks about as part of the scheduler.

The scheduler is already there. To do anything that refreshes MIP
before a rescan does need some sort of new scheduler to check when MIP
is done it's task. If it were simple, I'd have already done it.
Anything would need some good testing to make sure MIP status info is
accurate and predictable.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Decibel

dB is an expression of power (among other things) on a logarithmic
scale. 0 is considered 'line level' and is usually full volume, or
near to it (another typical maximum is +6dB). Anything lower is thus
negative, or attenuated, meaning the original output power is being
reduced. Each 3dB reduction is about half of the power.

Basically, for those who want dB display, the negative makes perfect
sense. For the rest, it's simply nice to know that it goes to 11.

first stop, check the log. If you've ended up with any corrupted
templates, it will spit out there. Otherwise, view source (if
available), and network.http set to debug for even more info in the

I can't recall if the db goes in the cache or not, because I use an

Are you using your system's mysql server or the SC-included instance?
Try starting both versions with --debug database.mysql. Check the cnf
file that each is reporting to use, and compare them to make sure they
match up.

Hopefully that will be a good start.

The joy of skin development, especially with beta. Much effort has
been put into making common blocks that skins can use, which allow a
single location for changes of this type (hreftemplate and cmdwrappers
specifically), but with more complicated skins and those using
javascript/css it isn't always possible to everything built for shared
construction. Some of these central blocks were later identified as
bottlenecks and were subsequently unrolled for better performance.

fortunately in this case, it should be a simple find/replace.

Far too true. Everything goes there, and folks get soundly razzed if
the comments are crap, plus any that link to bugs get linked and have
comments in the bug. Putting the same info into wiki, announcements,
forwards, stickies, release notes and repeat every week or so to catch
everyone up very quickly runs into no time to actually write code and
fix bugs. There is limited time for everyone, no matter how much they
get paid (or stay up nights).

The checkins can be overwhelming especially when the pace has been
going so full on as it has been for a long time now. I would suggest
signing up anyway, just to give it a go. You can filter later based
on subject, say anything that's HTML or in the Slim/Web modules.
Perhaps Slim/Control if you use the cli for any of the js interfaces.
That should give you a bit better focus for anything you might need to
check up on later. Often is just takes a glance to notice that
something affecting you has changed, and you can take a longer look on
ly when you have to.

Backward compatibility is a big deal, and it is always a top concern.
As odd as it may seem, backward compatibility also applies when
looking forward. It is important to make the changes during beta when
people have been warned that some changes will come. It is always
much harder once an official release is out. This is part of the
reason that 7 is so long in the making. It does break things from
6.5, and it needed lots of time for gathering feedback.

--memoryusage, I believe. That or d_memoryusage. It's not documented
as it will not work on all systems. It will require a number of new
modules but then you can view the usage for each module from the
memoryusage.html web page in the sc web ui (you'll have to manually
enter the url). Certainly not recommended for the timid and it will
add an element of instability to the systems as a whole.

For the required modules, there is one that tends to fail to install
in a lot of cases. I can't recall the name but it's one of the last
ones you run into when you are watching for failed module loads. It's
actually optional, and the page should still load. It takes a long
time, however. This is where is tends to show the instability. When
it works, it takes a long time to generate the info. It can also just
simply stop. Did I mention this is risky?

It's not been relocated through the code. The cache dir, however, is
stored as a pref, so if you used --cachedir as a command line at any
point, that would have overridden the default location and stored that
location in the prefs to use next time.

I like the basic idea. I'm not so keen on the custom tags aspect, as
this becomes a never ending cycle of supporting any idea that comes up
(some people just can't say no). One possible idea might be to
automatically loop all found tags, vorbis blocks, etc as raw blocks.
Any that aren't specificlally handled by slimserver could be popped up
with perhaps basic html framing so that embedded html would be
allowed, and perhaps some common API for template toolkit content (so
that your tags can have access to some slimserver specific variables)
and leave it at that. Simple is best, and this would allow basic text
where it exists, up to just about anything as long as the user is
willing to put in the time creating html blocks for tags.

It is all in the way the http server works. The page handlers use a
pattern match on the url to call the handler function. In this case, the
active line of code is in Slim::Web::Pages::EditPlaylist:
Slim::Web::HTTP::addPageFunction(qr/^edit_playlist\.(?:htm|xml)/,
\&editplaylist);
this means that the request for edit_playtlist.html will execute
editplaylist(). This function sends its results to
Slim::Web::Pages::BrowseDB::browsedb. When all results are complete, the
server delivers the information to a template like so:
return Slim::Web::HTTP::filltemplatefile($template, $params);
In the case of browsing playlists, $template is set in
Slim::Schema::ResultSet::PlaylistTrack to be browse_playlist.html, which
is the template file designed to handle the information given from the
server.

Judging by the other thread you started over the EXACT same issue, I'd

I have no performance problems Athlon 64 X2 3600, dual core 3G ram and

I'm sure you've been given plenty of tips already, so I won't bother

you've been asked to use the performance testing and that Triode has

Sounds like you went for 7.1, which is very much NOT beta.
Not the best plan as that is currently where experimental changes are
being added. It should only be taken on by those who can diagnose
problems for themselves and take part in the fix. Posting about daily
builds being a "real mess" would fall into being a bit unfair (devs
have to be able to experiment SOMEWHERE)

rolling back, you probably have to clear out the file cache and browser

correct order, wrong result. The code operates on first found, so if the
function exists in a custom map, then that is selected. Only if there is
nothing else does it fall to Default map. This works the same for modes.
If a function for a specified mode exists then that is used. If nothing
is found then it falls to "common".

You do, however, have to have the custom map chosen in the player settings
or the only map file checked is Default.

If you look at the 7.0 trunk of svn, you'll find that it's been
updated to version 7.0.2
you can consider that beta.

Although, in reality, the alpha/beta thing has never been very much
applicable to SqueezeCenter.

What you have are nightly builds, release and svn. in 7.0 trunk are
the stable builds, fixes only.
7.1 trunk is for more advanced feature changes
7.2 is a bit more experimental
7.3 seems to be nothing but 7.2 with a different version, but that
could change as more long-term
plans are made.
