Great info, since the scan runs fine in Mac OS but crashes in Windows.

Sorry, I haven't been around for a while but they were all .M4A files.
I basically solved my problems with ALAC and the lack of seeking by
simply converting them all to FLAC. That was a cinch - handled by
Mediamonkey with no sweat, tags and all preserved.

Why would anyone pay for this? The only real difference between it and
keeping the free MusicIP server running is it would ADVERTISE music to
you and give you an easy way to buy it.

Well that's what Apple's Genius does anyway. They don't really care
about audiophiles yet since their still making money off the 256Kbps.
Soon enough Apple will use that to raise the price of a song and offer
you another "upgrade" to lossless for more money. They did it once and
they'll do it again. Until then I guess we can use the results to just
order the CD instead.

Not ONE person other than you finds anything magical about Tapestry. If

[SlimDevices: Beta] Performance of Squeezecenter 7.5 beta (Win 7 x64)

2010-02-11 Thread sxr71

I usually come here to complain about something that's not working. But
over the last few weeks I've been noticing that the builds have been
very stable and they haven't caused me any problems or issues.

I've also noticed that performance seems to have been improved. The web
interface seems more responsive and even in machines that are not the
most powerful. It's a really good sign. I don't notice as much of a
difference between my completely on RAMDisk/Core i7 (4.1GHz) system vs.
running it on 5400RPM HDD/Core Duo Laptop at 1.6GHz as I did before.

The one thing I do wonder about is why the web interface needs to read
the actual music files when generating the album view with album art. I
have my entire cached art in RAMDisk as well my entire Album Art folder.
I have set SBS 7.5 to read the album art from that folder. I don't see
why it needs to read the actual files. I see the read accesses in Win 7
Resource Monitor. It tells you which files are getting read/written to.
Maybe there is something I'm missing.

Also I've noticed that even on my overclocked to 4.1GHz Core i7 machine
the limiting factor in web page generation is still the CPU. I see one
core of my virtual 8 cores get pegged to the full 12.5% which reads as
13% in the Win 7 task manager and it stays there for about a second or
two while the album page loads.

But it seems faster on all hardware than before, but I'm curious as to
what I can do to improve performance at this point. It might be overkill
but I built that machine primarily to be as fast as possible running
SBS.

What can I do to make SBS respond lightning fast? Also I love the Web
Interface more than the SB remote or iPeng. Overall with Trackstat and
MusicIP there is no easier way to control your music and playlists. I
hope it stays in the SB Touch. But I suppose I will always run the full
server on one of my machines anyway.

I have 6GB and never has my peak commit charge exceeded 2GB even with
RAM devoted to SBS. It's the only thing that runs on that machine. If
you try it you will see the difference. It is faster, and each web page
operation causes that RAMDisk to be read instead of a slow HDD. I don't
remember the last time this decade I have needed to hit a swap file due
to being short on memory - memory is so cheap now.

I use this:
http://memory.dataram.com/products-and-services/software/ramdisk

It's free and has been rock solid. It backups the data before shutdown
and restores the RAMDisk with data at bootup. The only thing I do is to
disable automatic startup of SBS at login so the RAMDisk can be up and
running before I start SBS.

Just create a RAMDisk and install your SBS to it. That's the easiest
way. But make sure your cache is moved as well. You can set it manually
in server.prefs. I leave server.prefs on a physical drive but everything
else is on the RAMDisk.

It makes a difference and if you have lots of RAM and have never seen
your peak commit charge high enough to indicate its being used I see it
as a free upgrade.

I also have run it on MAC OSX installed on an SSD and SBS running on a
RAMDisk. RAMDisk is very easy on Mac OS you can type a line in terminal
(easy Google search) or there's a program that backs up and restores
RAMDisk images as well.

It's easy, painless (once you set it up) and provides a performance
boost. It seemed to me that SBS ran faster in Mac OS than in Windows
though. I always run on maximum priority.

If you have a wireless access point in the network can you disable it

Yes, which is why cheater plug or isolation transformer was listed

he's lucky to easily know what the source is.

At first it worked then it seemed an update broke it for some tracks

Just perfect.

impressive. Keep up the good work!

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Stability of 7.6?

2010-06-15 Thread sxr71

I using the latest 7.6 beta and I have to say it is stable as in it does
not crash or stop. However I've noticed that sometimes it just does not
respond. It sits there and sits there and finally after 5-10 seconds it
loads up the page I requested. Which is ridiculous on a 4GHz quad core
i7 with the entire program and cache on a RAMDisk. However I understand
a beta program will do crazy things.

One thing I cannot for the life of me understand is why this program
needs to wake up the HDD with the songs on it simply to display album
art. Even with SQLite and the reworking of the program it seems to wake
up my HDD (and I hear it) while it slowly displays album art.

Can someone tell me what the purpose of the art cache is? Because it
seems to me it does nothing but take up space. The new scanner is
excellent and it updates the library periodically. So if there were any
question that the file (or album) is actually present the periodic scans
should answer that question. I don't see why the code is so inefficient
as to request a wake up of my HDD just to display my album art while
browsing. It's just very inefficient. I mean I could have this program
running on a Cray supercomputer and it would still be slow and clunky.

On the bright side, thank heaven for working Trackstat and iPeng on the
SQLite 7.6 version. Somebody please make this program behave with some
common sense else explain to me what the cache actually does. I
understand logitech has put the developers under a lot of stress and
with some crazy requests to be fulfilled in short order, but I really
hope we could go back to the basics and make some things fundamentally
more efficient. It would be much appreciated.

[SlimDevices: Beta] Need this thing to be lean and mean!

2010-06-15 Thread sxr71

Hello everyone, I currently run SBS 7.6 (latest nightly per the date of
this post) on Win 7 x64 on a 4Ghz core i7 with the entire program and
its cache on RAMDisk. The system drive is a 80GB Intel SSD and it is
where the .prefs file resides.

I have done everything in my power to make this web interface respond
fast and I must admit it does quite well. However I have noticed some
hiccups like how it needs to read the HDD (or the network location)
before showing album art on the web interface or on iPeng for that
matter.

Given this behavior the only next step I see is to literally get 1TB of
SSDs to store my entire music collection on it. This would run maybe
$2000.

So I am asking those who have run SBS on Windows and on Mac OS if it
really makes a speed difference by running on a Unix based OS. I am
seriously considering the new Mac Mini to run both iTunes and SBS. Then
I could use my PC only for HTPC and leave that power hungry monster in
sleep mode. I will of course be putting everything on RAMDisk even in
the Mac. I tried this on my Hackintosh and it works perfectly (My post
history will show the programs I used - it was very easy. Also a
RAMDisk on Mac can be set up in command line).

So does it run faster on a Unix based OS? Is Windows holding me back?

I was having some problems with the scanner and its results and I found
that deleting cache using the control panel did not help. I saw that
only some songs have MusicIP results and some rescans seemed to take
forever.

Anyway, I just navigated to the Squeezebox/cache directory and deleted
all files there (leaving the directories as they were). I started up
SBS and it seems to be doing a new scan and looking at task manager it
seems to be the in-process scanner only.

It looks so far like this may give me a correct scan.

Well whatever said and done I feel the SBS + IPeng interface is
preferable to iTunes remote. It lets you select "play next" or "add to

iTunes remote is quite primitive in comparison IMHO. No way to create a

[SlimDevices: Beta] 7.6 r31401 scanner will not clear library and rescan/musicIP nightmares

2010-10-02 Thread sxr71

Well, I've noticed a lot of changes in 7.6 but one in particular nearly
makes MusicIP unusable.

For whatever reason even when a correct scan was done and the SBS
restarts it will rescan the library and in the process if MusicIP is
not running it will clear all MusicIP data. The new automated rescans
do not play well with MusicIP at all.

Now if I select clear library and rescan it will not really work. This
has been an issue for several releases and I am just bringing this up.
I need to literally go into the SBS folder and delete the cache
manually. Not to mention that the control panel "clear cache" function
does absolutely nothing.

So the only recourse I have with this is to just manually delete cache
files and then start a rescan. Thankfully scans are faster but this
whole thing is really a pain.

Is there a solution? Can I stop those automated rescans? Can I somehow
make it preserve MusicIP scans?

I do believe in this platform and I recently picked up a Transporter
because I didn't like using iTunes remote, but these software issues
make life hard.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] 7.6 r31401 scanner will not clear library and rescan/musicIP nightmares

2010-10-05 Thread sxr71

Hello,

Yes I have disabled the function "automatically detect changes". I am
running on WHS Vail (Windows 2008 server) with a dual core Core i5 and
4GB RAM.

I realized it happens on the startup scan if MusicIP is not running it
drops all data from the MusicIP import. So the important thing is to
make sure MusicIP is running before starting the server. However it is
set to start on log-in so I must make sure the MusicIP also runs on
log-in.

My feeling is that dropping the MusicIP data with a rescan is bad
behavior though.

[SlimDevices: Beta] MusicIP not pulling from Apple Lossless files in version

2009-01-09 Thread sxr71

In version , I noticed that when I select the option to only read
mixable status from MusicIP, a funny behavior manifests.

Such Apple Lossless songs will find themselves within MusicIP mixes,
but those files themselves will not have the ability to create a
MusicIP mix.

Is this something anyone else has experienced? Am I overlooking
something in the configuration? Thanks.

You must drop back to PERL 5.8. Every time I tried 5.10 it fails.

[SlimDevices: Beta] Trimming my SVN install of 7.4...

2009-04-26 Thread sxr71

I have chosen to go the extreme route of putting my SC installation as
well as my Perl installation and my MySQL installation on a RAM Disk.

All I can say is that it flies! I mean artists load up in less than one
second and load completely in Google Chrome (the fastest browser for
this job; minefield 3.6 alpha is a close second).

My concern is how massive my SC installation is. I noticed that
Tortoise SVN downloads files for each and every version of SC.

Even if I tell it to delete certain folders related to Mac OS or Linux
it still keeps a lot of information in its folders.

I can't get this installation down to less than 300MB. I could break
the SVN but I like using it to update to the latest nightlies, which by
the way I update to 3-4 times a week with no adverse effect.

I wish there was a way to point Tortoise to only download the Win32
components of SC. Is there?

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Trimming my SVN install of 7.4...

2009-05-02 Thread sxr71

Yeah my solution is low tech but involves deleting out the useless
folders:

test
softsqueeze
Vendors\CPAN

Also everything under Bin or anything in a folder not related to Win32
when the other items are clearly for other OSes.

I got it down to 201MB or 221MB on Disk.

I just do my updates in my RAM disk sync folder, then do my manual
deletions and then copy to the RAM Disk. This setup simply flies.

I have to tell everyone, the method of delete and ignore and then
manually deleting everything in the folders works perfectly.

I updated again today and it even tells you which folders are deleted
while doing the update.

I have 106MB and 130MB on disk again. This is great for RAM Disk

[SlimDevices: Beta] 7.4 26506 Not playing certain ALAC files.

2009-05-08 Thread sxr71

I've noticed that SC 7.4 26506 fails to play certain ALAC files. It
plays some of them but with others it just shows the counter go to 1, 2
and 3 and then goes back to 0. I don't hear any music at all.

I just wanted to report this here to see if anyone else is having
problems. I know previous versions have played the same songs that this
version is not playing.

I run SC using SVN on WHS, I do not use the WHS version but rather the
Perl version and I only download the "server" path and not the whole
"Trunk" path.

Not IME. SC doesn't really utilize more than one core when rendering

page build while core core is used 100% and the other is idle.

Anyway I hope it improves. But I will need to stick with MySQL unless
the new SC has a way to support multiple instances.

With MySQL I could have 10 instances of SC all using the same MySQL

So I would do this again in the Registry under new Srvany processes as
I created last time with the same parameters basically (different cache
folders of course and different prefs folder)?

Do you think it is worth doing? Are there any improvements in other
areas that makes it worth it? I would lose Trackstat and that would be a
major loss.

I see the SC process run taking anywhere from 5-8% CPU for literally 20
minutes before I see a web interface at all. It's just too weird. Anyway
I gave on my foray into this new SC. I might try it again one day, but

Are there any other benefits we would get by running cleanup.pl? With a

I assume that if I run it once and uninstall wxperl that the control

That's just how it is. It was like that for me too. No feedback at all
during the scan.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Please rename "Beta" to "Alpha" !!!

2009-07-17 Thread sxr71

I really hate to say it but you guys are right. The quality of releases
is going down. I am using 7.34 which is just a minor upgrade on the
released 7.3 so I can't understand why it has so many problems.

Then you have 7.4 which performs worse in every area from scanning to
performance and it breaks Trackstat.

I loved the SC system for a year but I am close to giving up and just
finding something that doesn't require so much effort to maintain. I
want music, not a full time job maintaining a system. It's just become
very consumer unfriendly now. I mean you can't get Last.FM to work
because they screwed up the DNS function on the new FW. What were they
thinking? Then they screwed up the MySQL database that always worked
with some crap DB now.

This system is going to dogs. I'm sorry to be so straightforward about
my feelings about this but something has to change if they expect to be
successful. I really hope they can make it work, but it seems the latest
changes are just flushing years of good work down the toilet. I hate to
see this happen. I recommended the product to several friends and hate
to see them suffer on account of my advice.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Slow startup of EXE as Windows service?

2009-07-17 Thread sxr71

The system is unbelievably CPU intensive. I mean I have checked CPU use
and disk activity using the wonderful Windows 7 resource manager and
clearly the system is excessive in CPU usage.

I mean on a 1.6Ghz Core Duo laptop which I tweaked to run 100% CPU
speed 24/7 so as to not suffer from Intel Speedstep slowdowns it sits
and uses 50% CPU (yeah it look very single threaded this program -
somebody fix that one day I mean 4 or more cores are becoming the norm)
for a good 5-10 seconds.

WHY?

I mean I run the whole shebang inside a RAM disk and I cache album art.
Why it is reading data from my music drive every time I load an album
page? It takes so darn long to load even if I reduce the number to 50
items. The fact that it does not cache properly and needs to read the
album art from the music disk is simply inexcusable. My entire cache is
on RAMDisk and it is still so slow. Beyond that it was much slower when
running on a HDD. I wonder how people running this on NAS even find the
performance acceptable at all.

The program is so badly CPU and disk limited. I am now thinking of
building an expensive fast dual core machine just for this program at
considerable cost to me. Why I don't just wisen up and switch to another
system I don't know. It would save me hundreds of dollars. The only
reason I am doing this is just to take pride in having the fastest
operating SC I know of. So for this I am planning on getting a Core i7
and O/C to 4Ghz (maybe that will reduce an album page load from 5-10
seconds to 2-4 seconds - which still isn't that fast considering). Then
I am going to get 12GB RAM so maybe I can devote 1GB just for this
program and then take hours and hours to move all my album art to a
separate folder and then put that whole folder on the RAMDisk. Maybe
together with all that effort I will finally see album pages loading in
1-2 seconds. Maybe then I can set it to the 200 items per page I want to
use.

So $800 and hours of work later finally this system will perform
DECENTLY. Why I don't just get a Sonos or just get iTunes + remote and
run it on a cheap $300 machine with better performance I don't
understand sometimes. Maybe I am an idiot.

All this over-engineering to get acceptable performance. Something is
seriously wrong with the way this system is coded. Performance is
unacceptable and 7.4 despite its change of DB and breaking of Trackstat
doesn't help one bit. Someone needs to sit down and rewrite this thing
from scratch. Just my honest advice.

Yes it has been this way since day one. No indication that anything is
happening unless you check task manager and reassure yourself it is
working. We can do that, but regular consumers will not. They will
always wonder what the heck is going on.

I am using 7.34 not 7.4. It has been suggested when features are broken
in the released 7.3 to try 7.34 and it too has its problems. As for 7.4
I would never use it again until it is release ready and then again
probably not unless Trackstat works with it.

Maybe I should give Moose a try. iPeng is actually not bad at all. But
I know that the album page is very slow to load. I have been tracking
performance since the beginning and waiting 10+ seconds for a page of 50
items to load is a bit much. Even when running entirely in RAM.

Do you have any idea why it needs to read my music folder when it is
caching my artwork? That's an issue right there. It slows things down a
lot. I use both the SC performance monitoring and check CPU use via
remote desktop. The machine I am using has everything else disabled and
services disabled galore. It has 2GB RAM and 1GB free.

I noticed that once all album art has been displayed once it then
speeds up again but CPU use is still high and it is single threaded.
Multithreaded is the way forward. Other interface elements are extremely
fast when not loading artists or albums since I am on RAMDisk. But
artists and albums for browsing are still slow.

Sorry to be so terse but what part of "7.34" did you not read? I went
back to 7.33 and its the same story. Oddly, 7.4 fixes some issues with
7.33 like Duet needing an unplug and replug to see the server.

Just installed this, still scanning. Seems much better than 7.3.4 so
far. Let's see.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] 7.4 beta in an unstable, but usable state...

2009-08-28 Thread sxr71

Usable state on which planet? I mean the thing doesn't even show my
player nor does it even show any players in the drop down box. So I have
no volume control or play/pause control. When I set up a streaming
player it doesn't even show since the whole right side of the "default"
interface is dead. This is not usable for most humans.

Also Trackstat fails to load. I got it to work once, but then it just
died with that error. I'm going back to 7.3.4 and I wonder what kind of
errors I will find there.

I hate to be so negative since I know the developers are really trying
and they address issues very fast, so I will patiently wait.
