[Ontbirds]Haldiman Birds

2008-10-22 Thread Harold Stiver
A drive about the back roads of Haldiman produced flocks of migrating
flocks of birds.

Large number of KILLDEER were in many fields. In a field with standing water
on Concession 3, west of Cheapside, hundreds were in the field, most being
1st year birds. (See photo of bird watching a hawk
overheadhttp://ontfin.com/Birds/displayimage.php?album=373pos=21).
They were joined by several pair of WILSON'S SNIPE.

Across the road, a newly ploughed field was being worked by hundreds of
AMERICAN PIPITS, more than I've ever seen in one place before (See
photoshttp://ontfin.com/Word/american-pipit/).
They were joined by HORNED LARKS and a few SAVANNAH SPARROWS.

An Immature GREAT BLUE HERON used an interesting herding behavior to harvest
some small fish. (You can see his plumage details
herehttp://ontfin.com/Word/immature-great-blue-heron/
.)

WILD TURKEY seems to be quite common in groups of 7-8, and the field
directly north of the power plant seems to be a reliable spot to spot them.
NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD have also become easy to see with birds scattered
throughout.

Along the lakeshore a small number of SANDERLINGS were seen as well as the
occasional GREATER YELLOWLEGS. Several groups of HORNED GREBES were offshore
as were SCAUP SP. and a few BUFFLEHEAD.

Raptors have not appeared in large numbers as yet, The common RED-TAILED
HAWK were almost all adults (See
photohttp://ontfin.com/Birds/displayimage.php?album=262pos=9)
who haven't been joined by the immature birds yet. Good numbers of NORTHERN
HARRIER worked the fields and AMERICAN KESTREL were common.

The fields south of Rainham Road, west of Dunnville, hosted several huge
flocks of blackbirds, BROWN-HEADED COWBIRDS, GRACKLES, RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD,
and STARLINGS. It is an amazing sight to see thousands of these birds,
especially when they suddenly take flight.

Medium NW, with periodic NE winds, excellent thermals (TUV=3), and rising BP,
we knew we would have a good flight. Indeed, up to 11amEST only 27 came
through, including a sub-adult Bald Eagle. Over the next 3+ hours it was great
to visualize hawks on high thermals as they came off the lake from Thickson Pt.
I thank the sharp eyes of all of the above for helping me. Then, at 1:40pmEST
our first GOLDEN EAGLE arrived--what a sight--just 2 tree-tops directly over
our heads we had a marvelous view of the underwings of an adult bird.

[Ontbirds] Fork-tailed Flycatcher - north of Point Pelee National Park - YES

2008-10-22 Thread Sarah Rupert
Hi All

I got a call again this afternoon that the Fork-tailed Flycatcher had been
re-found around 3:30 pm. I arrived on D Concession around 4:45 pm to find
the bird on the north side of the road, sitting in some trees along the
ditch - it was just east of address marker 1802, directly across the road
from a light blue barn, where the bird was first found earlier in the day.
We watched the bird for a good 30 minutes, before it took off and flew north
west into a some wooded area between Concession C and D. A couple of
birders were walking through the fields along the hedgerow, hoping to catch
up with the bird.

There were still lots of grasshoppers and other insects along the roadside
this afternoon. I will be checking out the site on my way into the park
tomorrow morning and will post the results.

Good birding everyone.

[Ontbirds]Chatham-Kent------SNOWY Owl + Snow Buntings--Oct. 22

2008-10-22 Thread Irene Woods
Greetings Birders :

In spite of a beautiful Fall day here, perhaps Winter has arrived !

I received a phone call from Craig Anderson who was scouting for ducks.
He had an early Snowy Owl in view--probably male juvenile, very heavily striped.
He found the bird at 12:45 p.m. I arrived there a little later to see the bird.
It was still there at 4:00 p.m. when I left. It was sitting quietly, about 20
to 30 m.
from the dirt road, in a recently worked bean field. This was about 1/2 way
down
the road---Taylor Rd.--leading to Lake Erie. The bird was on the West side.
Directions to follow .

As a side note , there is a trail at the end of this road, that leads to the
lake.
Numerous ducks are there, as well as Scoters.

Later in the afternoon, Craig had 2 Snow Buntings land on his duck blind,
near Rondeau, about 300m off shore, in the Bay [ I think ].

On another note : A gentleman from Rondeau is writing an article / book
pertaining to Rondeau Park--2008. He wishes to include a photo of the
Scissor-Tailed Flycatcher seen in May in the Park. If you have a photo of
this bird,
and are willing to have it published, please contact me privately. Thanks.

[Ontbirds]A quick note about re-finding the Fork-tailed...

2008-10-22 Thread Steve Pike
The bird had flown North from concession D towards concession C, landing in
an isolated woodlot between concessions. Two birders attempted to re-find
the bird first asking permission to walk the lane way to where we believed
the bird had flown. Without knowing another house was located exactly where
I figured it ended up but the property owner was annoyed with their presence
on their property and threatened to call the police for trespassing even
before they had a chance to ask for permission.

Do not attempt to re-find the bird on private property, we're hoping it will
re-appear tomorrow along the road on concession D where it was sheltered and
seemed content with clear, close unobstructed views.

Best,
Steve

Weather:
After some early morning cloudiness and haze, conditions were sunny with
high cirrus cloud cover. Winds were light from the west early in the day
becoming initially south and then moderate from the southeast.

Raptor Observations:
Not altogether slow by most accounts, the day however was much less
productive in terms of migration than the last several, not surprising
given the conditions. Much of the TV movement was well to the north but at
least folks got to see some of the Buteos that came overhead with some
excellent views provided by both Red-tails and Red-shoulders. Unfortunately
the four Golden Eagles seen were also well to the north.

Weather:
Mostly sunny conditions prevailed during the morning hours with heavier
cloud cover moving into the area in the afternoon as a frontal system
approached from the west. This system is forecast to bring rain in the
overnight and much colder temperatures after the passage of a cold front.
Winds were moderate to fairly strong varying from west-southwest to
southwest.

Raptor Observations:
Migration was very stagnant with even the vulture flight but a trickle
compared to the movement over the last week.

Non-raptor Observations:
Kinglets of both species continue to be some of the most numerous birds in
the area along with large numbers of Robins, White-throated Sparrows and
goodly numbers of Hermit Thrushes and Rusty Blackbirds.

Weather:
After early morning cloudiness, gradual clearing was seen with mostly sunny
conditions remaining throughout the balance of the day. Winds were fairly
strong and brisk from the northwest varying somewhat to the
west-northwest.

Raptor Observations:
After last night’s rain and the passage of a cold front, today was perhaps
a bit slower than anticipated with the flight mainly a TV and Red-tail
event. I suspect that the front as it continued to move to the east blocked
any large movement of raptors.

Non-raptor Observations:
Crows continued to move well today especially in the afternoon with some
particularly large groups noted late in the day. With the strong west winds
overnight, a large area of mudflat was in view at Pointe Mouillee today and
hundreds of feeding gulls were present, mostly Ring-bills but also good
numbers of Bonaparte’s. Shorebirds present included both Yellowlegs,
Dunlin, Semipalmated Sandpiper, Black-bellied Plover, Killdeer and most
surprising, a possible Piping Plover.

Skies were mainly sunny today with a some heavier cloud cover early in the
day giving way to just high cirrus cloud. Winds were for the most part
light and variable becoming light east-northeast by late morning and
freshening to quite a stiff breeze later in the afternoon.

Raptor Observations:
After a very slow start, the flight was steady from late morning until late
in the day. Red-tails and Red-shoulders had their best showings of the
season so far with the flight being rounded out nicely by the 7 Golden
Eagles tallied along with a couple of Rough-legs. A perched Merlin early in
the day added to the day’s highlights of sightings.

Non-raptor Observations:
Today saw probably the largest Crow movement so far this fall with probably
10s of thousands of birds involved in today’s flight.

Total observation time: 8 hours

Official Counter:Colin Horstead

Observers:Bill Smith, Dave Brown, Dave Verkley, Dave Weare,
Don Taylor, Ed Taylor, Jim Dunn, Keith Sealy, Maris Apse,
  Mike Street, Phil Waggett

Visitors:
A tough day for everyone trying to spot the birds (understatement of the
day!!)...a big thanks to our visitors Clive Hodder (Oakville), Kathy
Knott, Lois Evans...and the usual suspects (see the list of observers /
counters).

Weather:
BLue skies, blue skies and more blue skies!! OK...so viewing was difficult
today to say the least. Winds were initially from the N but swung to NE for
most of the day until the last couple of hours when it went quickly E and
then S. Temp was VERY cool in the morning with a temp of just 2C but well
below zero with the windchill. Lower humidity and steady high pressure.

Raptor Observations:
Despite the difficulty seeing the birds today the total was still
impressive with 1044 birds tallied. Interestingly, since the day we got our
first Golden Eagle this season, we've had at least one pass by the hawk
watch each day since then. However, we almost missed out on one today...and
a big thanks to Kathy Knott (who just got started into hawkwatching this
season) for spotting a Golden Eagle crossing directly overhead!

Another decent flight of buteos with Redtails (358), Red-shoulders (42)
and a lone Roughleg...a nice dark-morph.

Non-raptor Observations:
Another good bird today was a Common Raven that flew directly overhead just
a couple of hundred feet up...and it actually did a bit of soaring behind
us after it had passed. Crows were passing through non-stop today...and
there were plenty of blackbirds on the move as well.

Predictions:
With predicted E winds there might be a bit of a flight in the
morning...but winds are then predicted to go SE which is our worst wind for
any kind of flight.
