[Ontbirds] 3 Orange Crowned Warblers, The Coves, London, Jan 7
I currently have 3 OCWA foraging actively in a canada goldenrod patch along the west pond of the Coves, in London. This spot is locally known as the orchard. I'm not sure which birds are continuing or if one is a new discovery. One is markedly brighter than the others. I did manage some poor video footage from my phone. Birds are actively giving chipping notes. This is a probable 4th warbler with them, I think a Nashville but I didn't get a good enough look to eliminate others... so I will work on pinning down this pig. They aren't currently with any other Dickie birds and were not present yesterday on my search. From wharncliffe ave, drive west on Cove Road. You can park at the German Club. Walk west to the terminus of cove road until you see a house with no trespassing signs. Turn left follow that path past the soccer fields and you will see the west pond in fr9nt of you eventually.Follow the footpath along the west pond until it's western terminus, on your right, an old, barely legible, no trespassing sign with red paint on it. I have marked the path with an inordinate number of things so you can't miss the spot. Birds are here now. Continue on path and on your right is a larger goldenrod patch which they have also flown to. Hi, A White-eyed Vireo discovered yesterday at Paletta Park in Burlington, is still being seen as of moments ago. The bird seems to stay in the cedars which are on the west side of the creek, and run along the east side of Paletta Mansion. It can be seen with other dickie birds. This bird may be around for Friday, the first day of annual winter listing. Take the QEW to walkers line, take Walkers Line to Lakeshore Blvd. Travel east on Lakeshore and the park is on your right. [Ontbirds] Northern Gannet Update, Hamilton, Nov.26
Hi, Birders have been looking for the Northern Gannet this morning. To my knowledge it had not been relocated as of yet. I searched along the lakefront this morning from the Skyway Bridge/Burlington Beach, east to 50 Point CA in Grimsby. I did not locate a single feeding frenzy that would attract the Gannet. On top of this, the wind is blowing from the west and north and, is at times quite strong. These winds could easily have pushed the Gannet east towards Niagara or perhaps back to New York state where it was seen before visiting us. Its still worth searching for of course. The scenario I mention is a strong possibility, however. [Ontbirds] Hamilton OFO trip summary
31 participants met me at Van Wagner's beach, for some fall birding along the Hamilton waterfront. A pleasant andsunny morning was welcome. 4 Sanderling on the beach and 2 Great Black-backed Gull on the lake, were a good start. That good start quickly turned not so good though, as the group quickly discovered that songbirds (even very common ones) were nearly impossible to turn up.Despite checking many traditional warbler hotspots on the first leg of the trip, our entire group only had 1 WARBLER OF 1 SPECIES! A Myrtle! The trend continued with only a couple of the usually numerous sparrows we regularly see.Herons put in a good show with Great Egrets, Green, Black Crowned Night, and Great Blue, all being seen in the same location. Shorebirds were later well represented with Marbled Godwit, Golden Plover, Bairds Sand, Ruddy Turnstone , Spotted, and a getting late Short-billed Dowitcher. The Godwit and Turnstone being lifers for different participants. Ducks also played a role in boosting our moderate species count, (about 60)with White-winged Scorer, American Wigeon, Canvasback, Pintail, and Black Duck being notable. Upon returning home, I discovered a rogue Parakeet in my backyard. He's here as I type this. Does he count? I thank Andrew Don and Rob Palin for their great assistance, and also Dave Milsom for his tireless work in putting these many OFO outings together. [Ontbirds] Hamilton OFO outing info
Hi all! It's time once again for our annual Hamilton and HSA(Hamilton Study Area) trip. We will be starting promptly at 8 AM tomorrow, meeting at Hutch's on the beach. Tomorrow's weather is not supposed to be particularly comfortable. A high of 40 Celsius with high humidex is predicted. Bring water, sun screen, etc. We will go until it's unbearable. As seems to be the trend, weather will not be conducive for a seabird watch. That said we will scour the beach to see if anything is about. There is a chance I take a handful of folks looking for Nelsons Sparrows if the heat hasn't stopped us! See you tomorrow and enjoy the convention. [Ontbirds] Long-billed Dowitchers, Saltfleet, May 04
May the 4th be with you, birders. This morning I located a distant Dowitcher at the back of a flooded field on 5th Road East, in Saltfleet. It was unidentifiable to species. Cheryl Edgecombe later followed up on my report, and located 3 Dowitchers that were thankfully much closer for viewing. Many photos were taken and shorebird experts have determined these are Long-billed. Very rare in The Hamilton Area in spring. A little bit of team work goes a long way! The birds are in a flooded field on 5th Road East in Stoney Creek, and this area is also known as Saltfleet. The birds are on the west side, between Green Mountain Road and PowerLine Road. There are over 100 mixed Yellow legs, 20 Pectoraletc. The area is now prime to attract more rarities and should be checked regularly Any additional info can be obtained via text or call to me or my assistant at 289 456 6502. [Ontbirds] Lesser Yellowlegs @ Hamilton, Nov. 22/2016
Birders, Alan Wormington always told me that there was no such thing as winter listing. This always confused me as he kept and had an impressive winter list! This post is in the spirit of the winter list! There has recently been a Lesser Yellowlegs at the Red Hill Stormwater Pond in Hamilton. It's very late for this species. Since it may stay to December 1st and a lot of you may have your eye on the Chatham Western Sand (great bird Steve!), I figured a post today would help in planning a potential route for Dec 1. The pond can be accessed by QEW Niagara, just south of the Skyway Bridge in Burlington. Take the Red Hill Creek expressway exit. While on the exit note a marsh to your right. As the ramp starts to slope up, and to the right, note a gravel road to take to the pond. Please put 4 ways on well before and keep to the right. Re: [Ontbirds] Golden-crowned Sparrow - Lowville Park, Lowville (north of Burlington)
The bird is around today. Rich Poort and I independently heard the distinctive song at a distance. We were then invited briefly onto private property where the bird had been seen and with a group of white throated sparrows. The bird sang at very close range to us two more times. It is in a dense muddy thicket and the birds are just starting to resurface as it warms. Undoubtedly I think that the bird will be seen and heard near the bridge that crosses the creek in the NW of the park as sparrows become active. Please note we did NOT see the bird and all we have so far is audio so if you do make the trip I want to make this perfectly clear that we did not have a visual. Please note: there is no access to private property in this area. The homeowners do not want people on the property. You must park at the park itself as the end of Lowville Road is a no parking area and you will be ticketed. The top of the stairs is also private property, please be respectful of the landowners there and if you are asked to leave, please do so. There are many areas in the park this bird could resurface. Directions: Take Guelph Line north past Britannia Road to Lowville. About .8 km past Britannia you will see a small Bistro on the corner of Lowville Park Road. The entrance to the park is off here and there is a large parking lot. Len Sent from my Samsung Galaxy smartphone. Re: [Ontbirds] [hamiltonbirds] King Eiders - Fruitland Road- Stoney Creek Dec 2
Following the post by Josh Vandermeulen, I came to Fruitland Road at the lake to look for both Eiders that were reported. I found the female west of the lookout, close to shore with a few Merganser. The young Male took some work but I did find him straight out amongst all the Long-tailed. As I scanned I located a 3rd Eider, another female King, about as far out as the male, but west about 150 m. She is much richer in cinnamon colour than the bird currently closer to shore. If my hunch is right there are several along shore here and maybe a Common. Get out there and check the lake. Also of note a Red-throated Loon off Green Road jyst west of here, this morning, which can be tough here for the winter list. Fruitland road is acessed off the QEW Niagara in Stoney Creek. As a consolation prize, Lisa and I discovered a male dickcissel about ten minutes from Hillman Marsh, at the Campers Cove Road field east of wheatley. This has been a traditional spot for this species in the past but we had not seen any reports yet this season.
