[Ontbirds] Black Vultures - Thorold, Niagara Region
This morning while at the Walker Industries landfill in Thorold, Niagara Region, 3 Black Vultures flew over me slowly heading west. In the last few months I have only occasionally seen Black Vultures at the "usual spot", aka the Queenston area along the lower Niagara River, and usually only one or two birds; presumably some of those birds are the ones now in Thorold. The landfill is located on Thorold Townline Road just north of Lakeview Cemetery, in the northeast part of Thorold, Niagara Region. [Ontbirds] Black Vultures north of Queenston
At around 1:00 pm today we had 36 Turkey Vultures and 2 Black Vultures flying north over Lewiston, N.Y. and the Niagara River. About 20 minutes later we saw 4 Black Vultures with at least 6 Turkey Vultures perched in trees right along the Niagara Parkway at eye level about 200 m south of the Lewiston bridge. [Ontbirds] BLACK VULTURES
WE BIRDED ALONG THE NIAGARA RIVER TODAY, AND AT THE BOAT RAMP AT QUEENSTON WE HAD THREE BLACK VULTURES FLY OVER THE RIVER, ALONG WITH SEVERAL TURKEY VULTURES. AT DUFFERIN ISLAND PARK, ABOVE THE FALLS, WE HAD TWO TUFTED TITMOUSE, AND MANY OTHER COMMON BIRDS FEEDING ON THE SEED SPREAD ALONG THE TRAIL. GOOD BIRDING. [Ontbirds] Black Vultures at Queenston
Hey Folks, Earlier today, myself and Kyle Holloway had nine Black Vultures near the Queenston boat ramp in Niagara. We originally saw them kettling (without Turkey Vultures!) on the US side and eventually they flew across the river and roosted with about a half-dozen Turkey Vultures on the Canadian side. We drove to the Queenston lookout on the Niagara Parkway and walked about 100 m south of the parking area on the road to a little area with a bench overlooking the gorge and were able to view the birds very well at eye-level. We tried for the booby later in the day but were not successful, however there were still many cormorants around and they seemed to favour the rocky beach near Donnelly's Pier where it was more sheltered but alas harder to view. There was one very bizarre-looking leucistic cormorant amongst the hordes. We did have two Little Gulls here amongst the swarm of Bonaparte's feeding on shiners, and a juvenile Peregrine did a fly-by. Lots of ducks as well, including several Black Scoters. [Ontbirds] Black Vultures @ Queenston persist, March29
Birders, For those still looking to nab a Black Vulture for their Ontario year lists, I thought I'd mention that the previously reported birds are still being seen along the Niagara River, in the town of Queenston, just north of Niagara Falls. Viewing is from the Locust Grove Picnic Area. We viewed the 2 of the birds yesterday, in the company of Turkey Vultures, on both the Ontario, and New York side of the river. Patience may be required tough to wait them out until they fly over Canadian soil. I understand they roost on both sides of the river, and they frequent the dump that can be seen just over the river on the New York Side. Certainly worth a visit if you are in the area! Directions: >From the intersection of York Road (81) and Niagara Parkway in Queenston, >travel south east on Niagara Parkway, through the traffic circle, and the >picnic area is immediately on your left. Parking is here and viewing is form >the lookout over the river. Good luck, Len Manning III, Esq. [Ontbirds] Black Vultures at Queenston
Good morning Dad and I just saw 2 Black Vultures and 1 Turkey Vulture near Queenston. The birds appeared to be leaving a roost on the Ontario side of the river about 200m upriver from the traffic circle near the Brock monument. I assume they are at the dump in the USA by now. [Ontbirds] Black Vultures at Queenston Heights, Niagara
Today Dave Purcell, Jeremy Hatt, Matt Timpf and I joined forces watching for vultures from Queenston Heights looking out over the town of Queenston, NY. After a period of just over an hour beginning 12:30pm we watched a total of 6 Turkey Vultures and 6 Black Vultures fly painstakingly closer to the Canadian side of the river. Eventually 3 of the Blacks were seen to cross the river and seen again further down over the Lewiston bridge with great views had by all. 3 of the Turkeys spent most of their soaring in Canadian airspace. The California Gull was seen down amongst the rocks (American rocks unfortunately) halfway between Sir Adam Beck and the Butterfly Gardens at one of it's old haunts by Dave and I just before noon. We could not refind it late afternoon despite much searching. Directions: QEW to 405. Exit at last chance before boarder crossing and follow signage to Queenston Heights (where the traffic circle is). There are two pull off areas on the right hand side as you go downhill towards Niagara-on-the-lake. [Ontbirds] Black Vultures in Niagara
Ontbirders: There are 2 Black Vultures currently roosting with about a dozen Turkey Vultures in trees at the edge of the Niagara river. Take the Niagara Parkway north past the Floral Clock to just north of the Queenston-Lewiston bridge. If you park in one of the nearby picnic areas and take the paved pedestrian walkway to the north side of the bridge they should be fairly easy to pick out amongst the Turkey Vultures. [Ontbirds] Black Vultures - Niagara Falls, NY
In the early afternoon while working today, I saw two soaring BLACK VULTURES just above the gorge rim of the Niagara River. These birds were about ½ mile north of the American falls and would have been visible from Niagara Falls, Ontario, probably across from Michaels Inn, which is a little downriver from the Rainbow Bridge. Sorry for the late notice but this was the first chance I had to post. I would suggest looking anywhere on the lower Niagara River from the area of the falls, downriver to the Niagara escarpment in Lewiston, NY-Queenston, Ont. Good birding! [Ontbirds] Black Vultures at Niagara
Posting for Kayo Roy who called from the field... A group of Niagara birders on the Niagara Falls CBC have just seen (4) Black Vultures flying over the floral clock at Queenston. Kayo relates that these birds were first reported on December 5. Later in the month Kayo saw four vultures at a distance too far to permit certain identification. So, these four Black Vultures must be spending time and/or roosting somewhere in the Niagara Gorge. Ontario winter listers might wish to try to refind them.
