Yes, I think we all agree that's quite enough of that.

Hi Andrew,

The subject could use some work ;-)

A number of Asterisk contractors come to our meeting, and I'm sure a
few have emailed you already. There's also a fairly comprehensive list
on the VoIP Wiki:

I'm finding that a lot of my business is based on partnerships with other

served, as opposed to competing with others.

TAUG Meeting & Social, Monday November 27th 6:30pm

2006-11-20 Thread Simon P. Ditner
Note the meeting is on MONDAY of next week. Again, difficulty getting
space on our regular day.

This month we're being joined by Nenad Corbic, Chief Software Engineer of
Sangoma. He will be speaking on optimizing and enhancing open PBX TDM
architecture for scalable, high availability systems.

"The new breed of Open PBXs/Switches such as Asterisk, FreeSwitch, Yate,
etc.. are pushing the boundaries of Open Source Telephony. In this talk
Nenad will discuss current limitations of Open PBX TDM architecture and
offer solutions used to overcome the TDM bottleneck in order to support
scalable, high capacity media gateway applications. This talk will
address low level TDM driver issues in attempt to optimize the hardware
performance, discuss kernel to user space optimizations necessary to
support large number of TDM calls, as well as high level modules that
promise to expand the Open PBX into a scalable multi-system architecture.
With the market constantly pushing the limits of Open PBX architectures
for more and more capacity the existing models and architectures need to
adapt to meed the demand."

When:

LinuxWorld/NetworkWorld 2007 & TAUG

2007-01-12 Thread Simon P. Ditner
Hi all,

I don't recall if I've mentioned it before, but we've been approached by
LinuxWorld and CLUE.ca to help create a "mini" canadian asterisk
conference within LinuxWorld similar to what they did with SmallTalk last
year. If you're interested in helping out, pls. subscribe to the planning
list, [EMAIL PROTECTED] (posting to [EMAIL PROTECTED]), and check
out the wiki page: http://wiki.taug.ca/wiki/LinuxWorld_2007_Planning

To keep non-technical chatter to a minimum, most of the discussion will
happen on the planning list, with the odd polling here ;-)

2007-01-15 Thread Simon P. Ditner
>From Marsee @ O'Reilly:
--

O'Reilly Media is in the process of building the "Asterisk Cookbook."
We'd like to invite the Asterisk community to contribute. We're looking
for two kinds of contributions.

First, we're looking for problems you'd like to see solved in the book.
If you need to make Asterisk do something and just can't figure out how,
let us know. We'll try to solve the problem for you.

Second, we're looking for more advanced Asterisk users to contribute
solutions to problems that they've faced.

If you're interested in participating, please see

This month we're being joined by Hung Lam, Director of Aastra's IP

accessible via the phone. In this talk, we will discuss the XML API and
tools available from Aastra to facilitate development of these
productivity enhancing applications. Aastra has developed some simple
applications such as stock quote, weather, news, and area code lookup
which are freely available from our server to demonstrate the power of
 XML on Aastra SIP phones."

high(er) profile asterisk installs who'd be interested in speaking

2007-03-07 Thread Simon P. Ditner

Hey all,

We're on the hunt for some higher profile Asterisk installs that might
be interested in coming to talk at IT360 in Toronto at the end of
April, and tell us of their war stories. It may be you, or it may be
one of your customers... We're particularly interested in an
organization that's not focused on VoIP/Asterisk, and perhaps used
Asterisk to solve a non-technical problem.

Contact myself or Evan Leibovitch <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> off list if you
have someone in mind.

Cheers,

more left, would anyone be interested in speaking on locking down
asterisk & integrating it with other things like apache,
MySQL/Postgres, other open source tools, and *gasp*, even commercial

I'm also looking for a few people to join me on the topic of exploring
what people haven't traditionally thought their phone system could do.

Here are the asterisk specific talks.

launching new TAUG website soon

2007-04-17 Thread Simon P. Ditner
READ THIS FIRST: If you plan on replying to this message, please, please,
either subscribe to the planning list ([EMAIL PROTECTED]), and
post to [EMAIL PROTECTED], or email me directly. I don't want to flood
everyone with chatter about web pages ;-)

So... I'm putting together a new website for TAUG based on Drupal.

As much fun as I have guessing what everyone wants, don't be afraid to
tell me what you think it needs!

I can install Drupal 5.x modules from this list (if I can figure out how
to set them up of course): http://drupal.org/project/Modules

Things still pending:
- Re-doing the theme in asterisk-orange and cream
- Web-based mailing list subscription

IT360 - Thanks!

2007-05-03 Thread Simon P. Ditner
Hi All,

The IT360 trade show and conference went very well, it was a crazy 3 days.
A big thanks to everyone who staffed the booth answering hundreds of
questions, and to those who volunteered to speak. All the feedback has
been positive so far.

There was a fairly long list of people helping out, so I'm just going to
take a moment to name names ;-)

Bruce Cole from IT360, and his fantastic staff for bringing the whole
conference together and making an investment in the future of telephony.
Also for the booth space and complimentary passes for our draw.

Evan Leibovitch from CLUE.ca for planting the thought of a telephony
conference in Bruce's head, and for all his hard work organizing the
Asterisk track, and getting sponsors on board.

Keith Major from Aquarius Telecom, Stephan Monette from Unlimitel, Ian
Darwin, and Dave Donovan for putting together our flashy new flyers.

John Van Ostrand from Net Direct for loaning us his booth gear, and even
driving all the way out from Waterloo to set it up and tear it down.
Those bar chairs were a life saver, and the booth looked really
top-notch.

All our booth staff who took the time out of their schedules to staff the
booth: Henry Coleman, Keith Major, John Van Ostrand, Reza Mosaddeque
Reza, Jim Van Meggelen, Leif Madsen, and everyone else who popped in. It
was great seeing everyone there representing TAUG and spreading the idea
that sharing knowledge and information is a good thing.

Digium for coming on as a sponsor, and flying Kevin Fleming, Josh Colp,
and Aaron Daniel here to give talks.

Matt Florell from ViciDial and FAUG, as well as Reza for their talk on
ViciDial at our packed TAUG meeting Tuesday night.

Aastra and Polycom for the handsets that they've donated to our loaning
pool (the Aastra 55i will be available at our next meeting).

I hope everyone had a great time, and I apologize if I've left anyone
out.

Our next meeting will be around May 30th, and will be a two parter. The
first half will be introductory Asterisk to welcome our new members, and
the second half will be on an advanced topic (please send me your
suggestions!).

Cheers,
spd

Does open source telephony need an advertising campaign?

2007-06-15 Thread Simon P. Ditner
I was showing a friend of mine Ubuntu last night, and he was astonished
that something so complete and useable was out there, and said "Why
haven't I (a normal computer user) heard of this?"

"Well, there's no advertising.", I said.

Which brings up the question, does open source telephony need
advertising? Is Digium(R)Asterisk advertising enough? Would it do any
good to run a local ad campaign targeting IT & executives?

That almost sounds like a slogan. Let us (opensource) be your

speaker for this month...

Having a bit of trouble getting a speaker for this month -- any
volunteers out there?

Maybe an alternate format? I think Unix Unanimous does something like:
- poll for questions
- vote on which questions to tackle
- answer them

LINKSYS DISCOUNTS FOR TAUG MEMEBERS

In support of TAUG, Linksys is offering discounts on various voice and
network products to members.

Many of you saw and took advantage of these discounts in June. I've
applied further discounts for this last week of the sale.

Mirrorport has been authorized by Linksys to offer these savings to
members until July 13, 2007.

The prices below reflect discounts in the order between 20-25% off the
prices seen on many of the more popular websites.

Like in June quantities are limited at the distributor and the
manufacturer has the right to withdraw the offer at its discretion.

Shipping is extra. Based on quantity special arrangements can be
made.

Contact me by email or phone if you're interested in taking advantage
of this offer.

[biz] TAUG Meeting; Guest Speaker & Downtown Location; 7pm, Wed July 25th

2007-07-17 Thread Simon P. Ditner
NOTE: This talk will be DOWNTOWN at John St. and Wellington St. West

Next Wednesday July 25th, we have a guest speaker coming in from out
of town, so I hope everyone can make it downtown.

We are being joined by Andrew Gillis, the creator of TrixBox /
[EMAIL PROTECTED] and he will be giving a technical talk on TrixBox.

Some background on Andrew:

Andrew Gillis has been working with VoIP since VoIP became
commercially viable in 1998. He was a Senior Systems Engineer at
several VoIP startups including Octave Communications developing VOIP
voicemail systems. He became an independent consultant, deploying
worldwide roll-outs of VoIP PBX systems to companies such as Liberty
Mutual.

In his spare time, Andrew created [EMAIL PROTECTED] as a fun project to
build home PBX systems for his friends and business associates.
[EMAIL PROTECTED] took a life of its own and grew to be the largest source
forge in the world with 80,000 downloads a month.

A bit about Fonality, the sponsor of TrixBox:

Fonality became aware of [EMAIL PROTECTED] and was impressed by the
growing active community. In an effort to give back to its open source
roots as well as becoming a lead generation tool for Fonality's PBXtra
product, Fonality acquired [EMAIL PROTECTED] in October 2006. Fonality
renamed [EMAIL PROTECTED] to trixbox. Andrew continues to grow the trixbox
community and the products the products that surround it.

When:

   WEDNESDAY July 25th, 2007
   7:00 PM - 8:30 PM

Where:

   Room 308
   Metro Hall
   55 John St.,
   Toronto, ON
   (Google map link: http://xrl.us/25xp)a

Driving:

There is a large parking lot just a bit north at King Street and
John Street. (Maybe there's parking closer? I'm not familiar with
   the area)

TTC:

Take the subway to St. Andrew station, then walk through the PATH
to Metro Hall, or walk above ground 2 blocks west.

Afterwards:

We'll socialize & grab a bite at a local pub; if someone has a
favourite that would accomodate 40-50, mail me off-list and I'll
   make reservations.

Yes, Asterisk can be used to run multiple simultaneous conference

Re: [biz] Botanicalls outfits office plants with Asterisk solution

2007-07-31 Thread Simon P. Ditner
There's some entertaining stuff coming out of that ITP program in New
York (http://itp.nyu.edu/show/winter2006/results.php). I touched on it
briefly at the IT360 talk Claude and I did.

I saw botanicalls at E-Tel in February, along with these other
interesting ones, which I believe were the show winners:

I've talked to them about coming up here to give a talk -- but they're
all students, so the chances are pretty slim unless we're doing something
large, or sponsor the trip.

[biz] seeking simple SMS solution

2007-08-13 Thread Simon P. Ditner
Does anyone have a SMS provider they would recommend?

I'm looking for a provider that will send inbound SMS messages to me in a
way that's easy to integrate with. Preferably something like an HTTP
POST/GET to a URL that I supply them with, or an email message...

It would be very low volume (maybe 20-30 SMS's /mo) for my own
entertainment, so low per-message fees aren't that important, while low
monthly fees are.

Cheers,
spd

Not used, but a xorcom Astribank with the FXS modules might be within
reach of that. Froogle rates seem to place them at about $60-70/port
new.

For Asterisk, no, but CallWeaver (Formerly OpenPBX, a pure GPL fork of
Asterisk) has very good T.38 support, and should inter-operate well.

[biz] TAUG Meeting; at City Hall; 7pm, Tues Aug 28

2007-08-22 Thread Simon P. Ditner
NOTE: This talk will be DOWNTOWN at 100 Queen Street West in City Hall.
The NYCC is presently closed for renovation.

Next Tuesday August 28th, Gabe Sawhney will be joining us to talk about
[murmur], an audio documentary project that collects and distributes
people's stories about specific places. During their daily routines,
pedestrians walk past sites marked with a sign indicating the presence of
one or more stories, and a telephone number that can be dialed to listen
to them. It allows the listener to hear the story of that place, in that
place; the details come alive as the listener walks through, around, and
into the narrative. The stories are as personal as the relationship
people have with the spaces they inhabit. Secret histories unearthed,
private truths unveiled and tales as diverse as the city itself are
discovered and shared. All members of the community are encouraged to
participate and contribute, so that the "voice" of [murmur] reflects the
diversity of the neighbourhood.

[murmur] launched in Toronto in 2003, and has since grown to communities
in seven cities (with more on the way!). They have been using Asterisk
since 2005.

Project site: http://murmurtoronto.ca

When:

   TUESDAY August 28th, 2007
   7:00 PM - 8:30 PM

Where:

   Committee Room #1
   City Hall,
   100 Queen Street West
   Toronto, ON
   (Google map link: http://xrl.us/4dm9)

Driving:

There is a large parking lot under City Hall. There are entrances off
of Queen Street, and Bay Street.

TTC:

Take the subway to Queen station, then walk west on Queen Street to
City Hall. Altenatively take the subway to Osgoode station and walk
east on Queen Street to City Hall.

Afterwards:

We'll socialize & grab a bite at a local pub; if someone has a
favourite that would accomodate 40-50, mail me off-list and I'll make
   reservations.

[biz] monthly meeting postponed

2007-09-20 Thread Simon P. Ditner
Having a bit of trouble with facilities again. Hopefully I'll be able to
get something first week of October.

If there are any angel sponsors out there whom have space to host
meetings for about 35-40 people and whom are also somewhere along the
subway lines, we'd love to hear from you ;-)

Cheers,

2007-09-24 Thread Simon P. Ditner
(PLEASE NOTE we've pushed the meeting back one week due to facilities
availability, and adjusted the time a bit)

Topic:

The voicemail application in Asterisk is one of the oldest of the
dialplan applications. It is often critisized as one of the
less-than-compelling parts of Asterisk, and, because it's functionality
is locked up in a very complex, messy and poorly-documented bit of code
(app_voicemail.c), no one has the nerve to touch it.

Jim Van Meggelen believes there is a way to fix app_voicemail, and the
way to do it is to completely get rid of it. Rather than treat voicemail
as a closed application, and try and design an app that handles every
possible thing that anyone might want to use it for, it makes more sense
to see voicemail as a complex (very complex, in fact) IVR application,
and break it down into dialplan components that can be delivered through
dialplan logic.

This is easy to say; not so easy to do. Replacing app_voicemail with
dialplan code is going to require a lot of code, and there are several
dialplan apps that will need to be created or modified in order to allow
this to happen.

This session will introduce TAUGs first community development project:
Voicemail TNG. Everyone is more than welcome, but this session will be
geared towards people with a solid knowledge of asterisk architecture, so
bring your thinking cap.
