Thanks! It did! bbappMan now appears in my Icons list, and doesn't fuzz
up either my screen or slit. Thanks a bundle!

The source code is at:
http://bbtools.windsofstorm.net/sources/devel/bbappconf-0.0.1-peak3.tar.gz

and an unofficial Debian package can be found at:
http://research.soc.staffs.ac.uk/~james/download/bbappconf_0.0.1-peak3-1_i386.deb

I'd actually had the Debian package installed, so I had to search
through Google to find the source code -- which is buried in the bbtools
site, and never linked from their pages. It might be nice if someone --
perhaps the maintainers of the FAQ -- would inquire into getting
permission to host the source and Debian packages on their site, so that
this app won't get lost over time.

IIRC bbappconf hs never iconified right. I made a patch a long time ago
for bbappconf.

Where did you get bbappconf from?

beta3 and bbappconf iconic

2002-07-23 Thread Matthew Weier O'Phinney

I'm not sure exactly when I started using bbappconf -- if it was with
0.62.1 or with an early 0.65 alpha. However, when I originally used it,
running "bbappconf -i" wouldn't iconify bbappconf properly -- I'd get a
little, blank, decorless window in my upper left screen on each
workspace. As a result, I started using "bbappconf -w" so I at least
wouldn't see it so much (I run my slit as autohide).

Recently, in alpha8, I discovered it was once again iconifying properly.
Then, today, when I upgraded to beta3, it reverted to it's weird
behavior once again.

Is this a problem with bbappconf? Or is there code that has changed and
changed back again for the bbtools that would cause this behaviour?

I don't notice the same thing happening with bbkeys, the only other
bbtool I currently run, which leads me to believe it's a problem with
bbappconf...

Anybody else noticing this? figured out a patch?

Well, I don't use the 'class' field of bbappconf, but as far as I know
your setup should still work. Here are the two lines which work for me:

bbappconf.1.classHint.name: aterm
bbappconf.1.decorless: true

Now, this is probably a really stupid suggestion, but you do have
bbappconf running in the background, right? I start mine in .xinitrc
with:

bbappconf -i -s &

before blackbox gets executed. Also, you may want to make a note of the
bblaunch utility, if you haven't already. You can find the URL for it
somewhere in this list's archives, as it can be a b*tch to track down.

Take care,

John

Here is a portion of my ~/.bbtools/bbappconf.bb to load a small command-
line term on all workspaces:

bbappconf.numberOf.configs: 3

..

bbappconf.3.classHint.class: XTerm
bbappconf.3.classHint.name: commandbox
bbappconf.3.decorless: true
bbappconf.3.Stick: true

..

In this case, I have to run aterm with the option "-name commandbox".
But I don't really use bbappconf any more. :)

as Glyn points out the border is controlled by the style, reduce the border in
your style and your aterm will have a smaller border too.

The easiest is to call it with bbkeys, and toggling its decor off afterwards with
bbkeys too (I use ALT-6 for aterm and CTRL-TAB for toggleDecor). Still, you have
to do it every time Nothing's perfect.

I've been considering doing that myself on the (future) 0.70 tree. But that
remains to be seen. In any case, this would not become apparent for some
time as the 0.62 tree is not about new features, and the 0.70 tree will
take some time to become "usable" I think.

Further, I think it would be nice(and I may be the only one here) to have some
application or configuration file that allows me to move the decorations
around. On my BB, it is set up to have only one titlebar decoration: the exit
button, and it is on the LEFT side of the titlebar. Every BB upgrade I've had
to edit the source to achieve this but it wouldn't be difficult to modify the
internals so it is configurable(from what I can tell).

I know, purely cosmetic. :-)

well, obviously this isn't implemented yet, but I suspect there'd be
additional functions like load_menu, or something, and you'd be able to bind
keys to them (in a similar fashion to ShadwWindow, ExecCommand, etc) and
blackbox would have some way to interpret this, and then it would call the
associated function that right-clicking calls.

I think there's some preliminary support for this with a patch... but I'm
not sure.

Comments on the above URL:

Don't agree:

"add keybindings back to blackbox: bindings are ctrl-arrows to change
workspaces and alt-tab/alt-shift-tab to cycle windows. (Patch available)"

bbkeys is fine.

YES!

'use blackbox without a mouse (open menus and browse menus with keys)"

I don't agree with this:

"move select key bindings back into blackbox, and add key bindings to pop up
root and workspace menus (they will only be key-navigable when popped up by
a key binding)", I think all keybindings (even ALT+click, ALT+right-click,
etc) should be moved OUT of blackbox, and into bbkeys, maximum configuration
would result from this.

Well, it'll certainly be interesting to see some of this stuff implemented.
I'd even be happy with some CVS action happening so that BB's userbase can
use the latest and greatest, as the small changes take effect.

There is only one workaround: do not change workspaces quickly.

The problem seems to be aruond redrawing windows on a workspace that is
left before redrawing is completed.

(I proposed a workaround that didn't help: the "Focus On Last Window"
OFF setting.)

and yet there are some people on this list that feel that blackbox is fine
as is. Sure, this is an eye-candy issue... but still, it's a bug, period.

ok... is this a patch to bbkeys, or is it in the main distro? how do I
utilize this function?

also, if I start an app without decorations, is it's upper-left corner in
the same position as if it HAD decorations? or is it displaced by the space
that the decorations would actually take up?

I ask because I can live without moving SOME of my apps, but in order to do
this, I have to place them.. and I want to just move them (with decorations)
to get the coordinates... and then once I move them... I can reexecute them
with the coords, and without decor.

Okay. Yes, you're absolutely right. And this is a blackbox issue.
Blackbox is broke WRT windows that have decorations removed from them.
I've added code to bbkeys to allow decoration toggling (toggleDecor,
which will add or strip decorations from the currently-focused window)
and went as far as I can go. Blackbox's internals are broken also with
regards to being able to tell other apps what the decoration state of a
given window is. I've patched blackbox to at least tell external
applications whether a given window is decorated or not, but it really
does no good because there's the other problem in which blackbox acts
like it's going to let you move or resize a now-undecorated window, but
doesn't really do it.

I've approached Raven (who responded to me, but it's been so long I
forget what was said) and nyz (who said that the version of KDE that he
runs doesn't have that issue =:) ) about this and it never went
anywhere.

So, Jeff, if you're out there, is there any update on where this falls
on the official blackbox TODO list?

ok... to clarify: bbappconf removed all the window decorations (including
title bar). Now, having done this, I fully expected to have to alt-click to
move my windows, since that's what I had to do with Eterm when it was
borderless, but this doesn't work.

Also, I read YOUR message wrong... and though you mean I had to
alt+middle-click in order to move the window.

I've always been aware of alt+click to move windows, and in fact, I use it
more than anything else.

when bbappconf removes the window decorations on aterm, alt+click doesn't
work... and I want to know why... this is utterly annoying!

Blackbox,

Umm... I'm running bbappconf... and first off, neat. Second... I removed the
window decorations from aterm, but now I can't move it anywhere! At least
with a borderless eterm (using it's commandline options) I could use
ALT+MOUSEBUTTON1 to move it around.

Ideas how I can move these around?

thanks.

new features patch for bbappconf

2001-07-14 Thread xOr

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hello All,

This is my first patch for BlackBox (actually my first patch for any open
source project :), so I'm hoping I am doing this all correctly, please
don't get too upset if I am not..

This patch adds new functionality to the bbappconf tool. The author states
on the bbtools page that he is stopping development until he can figure
out if he can roll the application into blackbox itself. If the author of
bbappconf could contact me, I could probly help in that job. Anyhow.. the
new features! With this patch you can specify the coordinates to place a
window (upper left corner), and you can now also specify the width/height
of a window. The entries for the bbappconf.bb file are such as follows:

bbappconf.1.positionX: 10
bbappconf.1.positionY: 300
bbappconf.1.width: 280
bbappconf.1.height: 400

If only one of either pair is specified (x but not y), then nothing is
done with that pair. Position can be specified as a negative number (i
used - as the "illegal value" so that would actually not work, i doubt
anyone is putting windows that far into negative space..anyone disagree
with this?). For the width and height, a negative value is disregarded
entirely, they must be positive numbers.

Please give me any feedback you have regarding this all.

and stopCommands, which can really hose things up!
- Status lights always get cleared now on manual disconnect, instead of turning
   to the switching color.
- switchColor.switching is now used more intuitively (at least, to me :-).
The switch light changes to that color as soon as the user clicks to connect
   or disconnect.
- troughput rates >= 10kbps no longer overflow the throughput window.

bbappconf:

Added vertical an horizontal maximize options, just change the resources values
bbappconf.1.maxVert and bbappconf.1.maxHoriz.

Let me know if it works ok, if I don't get any bug reports I'll clean up the
code,
add documentation and make it an official release.

rxvt and xterm can use a geometry resource or command line option; aterm
probably has the same -- read the manpage for aterm.

-geometry WIDTHxHEIGHT+XOFF+YOFF

Maybe:
  aterm -geometry +50+50
  aterm -geometry +50+400

Positioning with bbappconf

2000-12-20 Thread Kevin Oleksy

I'm using bbappconf to start 2 decorless aterms on the same desktop, and
when they open up they're both on top of eachother (they're the same
size too). Is there anyway to get bbappconf to position one right below
the other or is this done with aterm itself? I don't know how to do it
either way..

Thanks,

I think that's a very sound idea. Perhaps stuff from the manpage could
merge with a user guide. The user guide should imho cover all of the
bbtools as well, as well as installation instructions (which typically are
not in man pages)

Actually, I've never even tried to use bbappconf, I just happened to recognize
what your compiler was complaining about.

No, you're not blind, I love blackbox (and associated utilities), but even
the most critical documentation is often only a brief off-topic comment in
an e-mail.

The approach I use is to follow all the links on the bb home page looking for
examples and follow all the links on those pages. I read every e-mail in the
mailing list and occasionally go back to the archives and browse the headings.
There are a couple of long threads that will help you out.

Soon, I am going to post a proposal for a comprehensive blackbox user's guide.
Blackbox deserves to be made more available to users who are not professional
software developers, without burdening those same developers with routine and
repetitious questions.

If you have the x-pixmap libraries, they may not be up to date enough.
I've noticed that these bbtools can require the very latest libraries. For
example,
blackbox itself runs fine on SuSE 6.2, but bbkeys requires SuSE 6.4.

If you don't have the x-pixmap libraries (xpm), install the very latest. In
particular, you need libXpm.so.4.xx.

Guess what tool it was based on ;)
No the window for the moment is just a placeholder (you have to map a
window before it can receive info from Blackbox).
I'm planning to add some features to that window, like starting up a
configuration app, stop messing with my windows, maybe save session.
The current peak release is just a snapshot of what I have untill now, so
I'll be adding some stuff. At least if you guys find the tool usefull.

It will be there in the final 0.0.1 release (I hate writing docs so it's
always te last thing I do, if at all).

I've got it up and working, and it's great that I'll be able to make a
.xinitrc that places xterms in different workspaces (this might be just the
spur I need to drop WindowMaker). But I have a couple of questions about it.
Is it supposed to do the same thing as bbpager as well? The documentation
seems to indicate that, as well as all the options like
"bbappconf.desktop.width: 40", but I don't see any such thing. And
if that's not the case, what is the point of that sticky empty window that it
brings up? I don't see any point to it.

Okay, I saw what it does now. The implementation is still a bit fuzzy,

bbkeys so that I don't have to look at the bloody thing? ;)

Because I know you write good apps, I'd like to extend this preemptive
`thank you'. Because I have been on Mars for the last two weeks, and
have no idea what this tool does, I'd like to ask `wtf'. I built and
installed it successfully, but have absolutely no idea what it is or how
to use it. Can you provide some sort of documentation? The README was
a bit vague...

Why does configure require XpmFree? I didn't need Xpm to compile blackbox.

Hello,

I just put up a preliminary version of bbappconf, a tool to set decoration
and workspace of windows in Blackbox.

Just have a look and let me know any suggestions/ideas you have.

Possible options I am alreay thinking about:
- session saving
- adding configuration tool
