Hi
On the weather sig website there are other files one can down load and
install for country's other than the US. I live in the US. So, I have no
experience installing these files.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Large icons?

2009-12-01 Thread Mark

Hi
If the mail client you want is not available in the weather program you
do have one other alternative. You can create a weather sig and copy and
paste it in to your E-Mail.
To do this, use jaws key plus f 11. Arrow to the weather icon and tab
to right click. Press enter. Now, down arrow to copy sig to clip board and
press enter. Next press escape to close weather sig. You can then paste the
weather and joke in your E-mail. Personally, I enjoy the weather icon in the
system tray. It is a quick way to check the temperature.

I hope this helps.

God bless,
Mark

Have you closed every other application , especially browsers, before
attempting the removal?
The other standard way of resolving these problems sounds odd but often
works.
Basically you have to re-install the Google Toolbar. Rerun whatever it
is

you have installed that has put the google toolbar on your system. If
you
are not sure what this is find the recent things that you have installed
and
as well as tabbing to the next key on each setup stage keep on pressing
insert plus B to read each part of the install dialogues as they come up
.

This will help you find the program which has installed the google
toolbar.

Once the Google toolbar is completely installed restart your PC.
Now go to add remove programs, make sure no other application is running
and retry removing the program . Hopefully it will come off now.

Hi Lou,

Was just thinking, can you get a copy of the Bible on CD? I purchased my
audio Bible on CD years ago and then ripped it to my computer. Yes, it does
take some time, but it was well worth it. I just copy the MP3's that I want
to listen to, when I'm done with that, I delete those and then copy the next
ones onto my MP3 player. However, giving the size of the Bible, I'm not sure
the whole thing would fit on a 2gb drive. It may, I've just never tried it.

Good Luck.

Re: [Blind-Computing] trying to remove the google tool bar

2009-12-01 Thread David Griffith
Have you closed every other application , especially browsers, before
attempting the removal?
The other standard way of resolving these problems sounds odd but often
works.
Basically you have to re-install the Google Toolbar. Rerun whatever it is
you have installed that has put the google toolbar on your system. If you
are not sure what this is find the recent things that you have installed and
as well as tabbing to the next key on each setup stage keep on pressing
insert plus B to read each part of the install dialogues as they come up .
This will help you find the program which has installed the google toolbar.

Once the Google toolbar is completely installed restart your PC.
Now go to add remove programs, make sure no other application is running
and retry removing the program . Hopefully it will come off now.

Regards

David Griffith

Subject: [Blind-Computing] trying to remove the google tool bar

Hi, everyone,

I've been trying to remove the google tool bar but with no luck. I went to
the control panel and went to the add and remove programs menu. Then when I
arrowed down to the google tool bar, I couldn't get rid of it. I got a
message that said "manager dialog" or something like that. I don't know what
to do anymore. I'm even being asked to send an error report but I don't want
to keep doing that. Is there a way to disable the tool bar so I can remove
it more easily?

Any help with this would be very much appreciated.

Many thanks in advance.

I just found out about a great program on this list a couple of weeks

It's called cdex. all you do is put your CD in, start CDEX, it goes out
to
an internet site and gets all the information about the CD including
Artist,
Track Titles, year, etc. Then you just hit either F8 to rip it in .wav
files

I just received my Coby MP200 MP3 player from J&R, and it is truly simple
and totally blind accessible. On top of the unit is the earphone jack
into which you plug the included earbuds. The front panel has 5 discrete
buttons arranged in a vertical column. From top to bottom, the buttons
are skip forward, play/pause/power, skip backward, volume up and volume
down. Pressing and holding the second button from the top for 5 seconds
turns the unit on, and pressing and holding it again for 5 seconds turns
it off. That's all there is to it. The bottom of the unit has a USB
connector that plugs directly into a USB port, although a separate USB
cable is also included. You just plug it into your PC and copy and paste
the MP3 files you want to download. Just install the included AAA
battery and you're good to go. The sound quality is surprisingly good,
at least using a better pair of earbuds than the included ones. There is
absolutely no learning curve, and no sighted assistance is required to
use it. The included software, which I have not tried yet, is fully JAWS
accessible. With 2gb of memory, it can hold up to 1,000 songs. This is
probably the best blind accessible MP3 deal ever. It is still available
from J&R for $10 with free shipping, but they probably won't last much
longer at that price. They make wonderful stocking stuffers. The
hardest part of using this gizmo is getting it out of the plastic blister
pack which requires a heavy duty scissors to cut open.

or does this program do that for you?

Hi Lois,

I just found out about a great program on this list a couple of weeks ago.
It's called cdex. all you do is put your CD in, start CDEX, it goes out to
an internet site and gets all the information about the CD including
Artist,
Track Titles, year, etc. Then you just hit either F8 to rip it in .wav
files
to your computer, or F9 to rip them as .mp3 files. It puts the CD in your
My

Music folder under your My Documents folder. I love it! It's so easy.

The direct link for the program off of the Blind Computer users programs
page is:

Good Luck.

Hi blindguy,
I downloaded and installed the software from:
http://www.weathersig.com
Then a person needs to set it up by locating ones local weather station, if
you want metric measurements or not, and more. The easiest way to do this is
to write click on the weather icon in the system tray. There is an entire
menu that appears. Next I edited the cookies.txt file to remove all the
offensive jokes. After that it works great. Personally, I would love to see
more people using the program. It would be fun to see the weather around the

Hello Ken. a netbook is a perfect thing for what you want. It can still be
purchased with windows xp pre installed which is a big plus. They usually
come with a 1 gig or bigger processor and one gig of ram. it can usually
be updated also. The keys are smaller than that of a laptop but think they
have models closer to the laptop style. you can of course install jfw or
window eyes whichever you prefer. You can even get a USB keyboard for it.
I have a friend who has one that rolls up even. If you have any more
questions feel free to email me off list at mcare...@optonline.net. It is
my other email address. I would also recommend that you go into a store
and look at netbooks to get a better feel. You can even start up narrator
like I did and get some kind of a better feel for it.

Hello everyone,

My wife and I really need to get something we can use on the road. Need
something that has a good speech program for me, or something that I can
put JAWS on. Also need something that will hook up to the internet via
phone modem or Wi-Fi. A pretty good sized hard drive is kind of important
as well as a couple of gigs of ram.

I'm wondering what might be the best, a laptop or a notebook. I don't
know anything about notebooks. What is the interface; keyboard or touch
screen? Any thoughts you might have will help me out a lot.

Thanks everyone. I love this forum, you have helped me so much in the

Hi
I think what you said about right clicking on the desk top will work. I
tried that on my desk top and there is a item there called views. In that
there is a selection box that says small, medium, or large Icons. Mine is
set to medium. Now when I get to talk with my sister this evening I can tell
her what we found. Thanks for the help everyone.

Hi

For some reason all the icons and print became so large they are hard to

Thank you.

I just received my Coby MP200 MP3 player from J&R, and it is truly simple
and totally blind accessible. On top of the unit is the earphone jack into
which you plug the included earbuds. The front panel has 5 discrete buttons
arranged in a vertical column. From top to bottom, the buttons are skip
forward, play/pause/power, skip backward, volume up and volume down.
Pressing and holding the second button from the top for 5 seconds turns the
unit on, and pressing and holding it again for 5 seconds turns it off.
That's all there is to it. The bottom of the unit has a USB connector that
plugs directly into a USB port, although a separate USB cable is also
included. You just plug it into your PC and copy and paste the MP3 files
you want to download. Just install the included AAA battery and you're good
to go. The sound quality is surprisingly good, at least using a better pair
of earbuds than the included ones. There is absolutely no learning curve,
and no sighted assistance is required to use it. The included software,
which I have not tried yet, is fully JAWS accessible. With 2gb of memory,
it can hold up to 1,000 songs. This is probably the best blind accessible
MP3 deal ever. It is still available from J&R for $10 with free shipping,
but they probably won't last much longer at that price. They make wonderful
stocking stuffers. The hardest part of using this gizmo is getting it out
of the plastic blister pack which requires a heavy duty scissors to cut
open.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Laptops verses notebooks

2009-12-01 Thread matthew
Hello Ken. a netbook is a perfect thing for what you want. It can still be
purchased with windows xp pre installed which is a big plus. They usually
come with a 1 gig or bigger processor and one gig of ram. it can usually be
updated also. The keys are smaller than that of a laptop but think they have
models closer to the laptop style. you can of course install jfw or window
eyes whichever you prefer. You can even get a USB keyboard for it. I have a
friend who has one that rolls up even. If you have any more questions feel
free to email me off list at mcare...@optonline.net. It is my other email
address. I would also recommend that you go into a store and look at
netbooks to get a better feel. You can even start up narrator like I did and
get some kind of a better feel for it.

You are right! I have never done this but, after opening Google I arrowed
up and loe and behold there was search settings. It was above the search
edit field. I had always assumed that the search edit field was at the top
of the page. Live & learn! Take care.

I don't have to open language settings to find the search settings link. It
is on the regular Google search page near the top, I think.

There is no longer a link for Preferences on Google. Instead it is called
Search Settings. The page that opens is easy to navigate by headings. I
usually just go to the heading for Number of results. I like 50 results
since I don't like having to going to lots of pages and getting my

topic in that heading.
Be sure to save your settings.
For some reason these settings become erased now and then and I have to go

The "preferences" used to be on the first page.

NO, it cannot play Audible books. It only plays MP3 and WMA files. What do

There is no longer a link for Preferences on Google. Instead it is called
Search Settings. The page that opens is easy to navigate by headings. I
usually just go to the heading for Number of results. I like 50 results
since I don't like having to going to lots of pages and getting my bearings
each time. I also like each result to open in a new window which is the next
topic in that heading.
Be sure to save your settings.
For some reason these settings become erased now and then and I have to go
back to reset them.
Hope this helps.

Not true. I just checked the J&R web site, and the Coby MP200 is still
available for $9.99 with free shipping. I have been using mine for two days
now and am very satisfied with it. But don't wait too long, because at this
price they probably will sell out soon. I have seen a few other good MP3
player deals like the 4gb Centon Movex at Newegg.com for $12.99, but they
all seem to have display screens which make them inaccessible.

pair

of earbuds than the included ones. There is absolutely no learning curve,
and no sighted assistance is required to use it. The included software,
which I have not tried yet, is fully JAWS accessible. With 2gb of memory,
it can hold up to 1,000 songs. This is probably the best blind accessible
MP3 deal ever. It is still available from J&R for $10 with free shipping,
but they probably won't last much longer at that price. They make
wonderful

stocking stuffers. The hardest part of using this gizmo is getting it out
of the plastic blister pack which requires a heavy duty scissors to cut
open.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Google is really getting to me!!!!

2009-12-01 Thread Silly Goose
There is no longer a link for Preferences on Google. Instead it is called
Search Settings. The page that opens is easy to navigate by headings. I
usually just go to the heading for Number of results. I like 50 results
since I don't like having to going to lots of pages and getting my bearings
each time. I also like each result to open in a new window which is the next
topic in that heading.

Be sure to save your settings.
For some reason these settings become erased now and then and I have to go
back to reset them.

Hope this helps.

Subject: [Blind-Computing] Google is really getting to me

Can someone tell me how to get to the Google preferences??
Like, number of hits per page etc.
The "preferences" used to be on the first page.
Now, it, along with just about anything else useful, ain't there.
Thanks in advance!!
