I'm completely confused as to why, if folks are experiencing so much difficulty, they are prone to use browsers and e-mail clients other than Internet Explorer and Windows Mail or Outlook. I understand the "glamour" of being able to identify one's self as a non-conformist and hence using tools other than those provided by Microsoft, but considering the difficulties I've seen on various lists I wouldn't touch any of these tools with someone else's screen reader. Obviously, JAWS has been developed and delivered complete with strong support files to interact with Internet Explorer and any of the Microsoft e-mail clients. I presume the same can be said for WindowEyes. So, why not not use what works best given the framework of needing to use a screen reader? I guess, that since I was a software developer for so many years, I find no personal satisfaction in being able to say I am not a conformist. I just want to use what works the best given my limitations. If the reason for using the non-Microsoft tools is enhanced security, then why not take the entire plunge and move to Linux? Re: [Blind-Computing] Coby MP3 Player!
I ordered my Coby player from J&R using IE 7, XP Pro and JAWS 9, and had no problems. This little gizmo is great. Just install the battery, plug the player directly into a USB port, copy and paste your MP3 files into it and enjoy. For best sound quality, substitute a better pair of earbuds than the supplied pair. Too bad they're no longer avaiable for $10. But even for $14.99, it's a great value for a blind-accessible MP3 player. JAWS does not work well with Microsoft Live Mail! Since Outlook Express and Windows Mail are not available in Windows7, people are forced to switch to something. FS has scripts for Live Mail in JAWS 10 and 11, but they have lots of flaws. The JAWS 10 scripts actually work better for me than JAWS 11. I can not even read mail with JAWS 11! I need to switch to JAWS 10 every time I want to read mail. This gets very agravating! The scripts for JAWS 10 are less annoying and my biggest complaint is that it will not announce "unread" or indicate when there is an enclosure. [Blind-Computing] changing computer name
Hi, I have a question. I recently purchased a new laptop with windows seven professional and I made a mistake which I don't know how to undo/change. There was an area where I typed the name of the computer which I typed my name but made a typo. Is there a way I can fix this? My name shows correctly on the start menu, and the welcome screen but not in the user folder in the local drive. Re: [Blind-Computing] zoom text
I started out with Zoomtext with speech before moving onto Jaws as my sight went.. I think even Zoomtext makers Ai squared admit that in terms of screen reading Zoomtext is not in the same league as designated specialist screenreaders like Jaws and has much less functionality. Zoomtext with speech works best if you have limited vision. For example the app reader works well only the web if you can see enough to spot the content that you want read out on the page and click on that part of the web page. In this sense the speech output from ZoomText is efficient and intuitive for those who have enough sight to use screen, pointer and other enhancements enough to use a mouse. Where Zoomtext starts to fall down badly is if you do not have enough sight to take advantage of these visual enhancements . So navigation on a web page with the basic Zoomtext screen reader is pretty tortuous. This is because you are pretty much limited to the tab and cursor keys as you are without the recourse to navigation tools that a screen reader would provide. . To be fair Zoomtext was never designed to be used by people who could not take advantage of the visual and mouse pointer enhancements it affords. I do not know it is still there but I remember reading on the AI squared site that if you did not have enough sight to take advantage of the screen enhancements you would be much better off with a specific screen reader like Jaws. This was refreshing honesty and is absolutely right. Actually I think a person without useful ability to use a mouse would be better off with NVDA rather than Zoomtext. Personally I found Zoomtext more intuitive and smooth than Magic and I would unhesitatingly recommend it for someone who still wanted to be able to use a computer with a mouse. I think it is a mistake to consider it as a appropriate utility for those without enough sight to use a mouse. It is simply not designed with these users in mind. Re: [Blind-Computing] zoom text
I actually find that mAGic, although developed for partially sighted people, has a very good speech component. It even allows one to navigate web pages just as if JAWS was reading with document presentation set to screen layout. Ok, it's not as flexible as JAWS, but it's better than nothing. I of course will use JAWS for my daily use, but like to try other software too, and thought MAGic was quite good actually. Re: [Blind-Computing] I took the plunge and am Now trying to gowithThunderbird
I don't think it's so much about being a non-conformist, but sometimes there's something else that works better than a Microsoft product. I haven't used Thunderbird, so I can't comment on it, but since it's a Mozilla product, I'd be willing to bet it's more stable than Outlook or Live Mail. The reason I say this is because I've used Firefox for over a year now and love it. If you notice, IE doesn't have any such plugin like WebVisum to help us blind folks out with captchas. Firefox is also more secure. True, constantly updating your flash player and quicktime can be annoying because you have to do taht in order for it to play sounds, but I consider that a minor inconvenience considering that it is much faster than IE. Sometimes people take the plunge and break away from microsoft products because they're actually better! Other than not using standard controls, I can not say that Live Mail sucks! I actually like it a little better than Windows Mail. Not being able to use first letter navigation in the Folders tree and not scrolling correctly so JAWS will speak the folder name are probably Microsoft's fault. The switching to a message view that displays html better is also a benefit in the long run. Unfortunately JAWS does not always work as expected and often gets stuck in forms mode and I can not get out without exiting JAWS and restarting. It is a shame that the JAWS 11 scripts actually are worse and any changes only seem to have broken things. The most troubling thing is that Live Mail has been out a long time, and FS does not appear to want to support it! That is why people are taking matters into their own hands and finding a solution. It has nothing to do with being a non-conformist or wanting to stand out! I am using windows live mail and actually liking it. Aside from having to open forms mode more than once to start an email it is ok. I can get out of forms mode with the pc cursor with no problem. I actually like the contacts feature also. It is pretty easy to add someone and then insert the email address into whatever field you want to. Also the bcc field is there to start with. I have only used it with jaws 11 so far and like I said it works pretty well. -- From: "Donald Marang" Sent: Thursday, December 17, 2009 7:26 PM To: Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] I took the plunge and am NowtryingtogowithThunderbird> Other than not using standard controls, I can not say that Live Mail sucks! Re: [Blind-Computing] changing computer name
Are you certain that you are talking about the computer name and not the user name? I do not believe the computer name will show up anywhere in the menus. Type "Network" into the Start menu search box to get a list of computers and devices on your network. To change your network name or workgroup name, press the Windows key + the Break key (the last key on the right end of the function keys), to bring up the System Control Panel. Hit Tab until you get to a button labeled "Change", and press Space. Press Tab to the "Change Name" or something similar button. In this dialog and press Space. It will now allow you to change the computer name and workgroup name. As you press the Ok button, it will ask you to restart. Re: [Blind-Computing] I took the plunge and am Now trying togowithThunderbird
Hi, I'm thinking of going to thunderbird myself. In fact, I already tried it with NVDA and it works great. It's even more stable than outlook express. I've had it up to here with windows messenger because it keeps interfering with whatever tasks I need to do. My sighted nephew Dave's coming on Sunday to uninstall it for me. I've done everything I know to do to get rid of messenger but nothing works. I don't see the need to keep it because I really don't instant message anymore. Even when I did instant message, it was only with a couple of people I knew but that was it.
