Friends, I took the plunge and decided to give thunderbird a try again.

Does anyone know where to uncheck the box that says use name and

authentication.

this is driving me nuts!
if I get help on this maybe I will be able to send messages without that

I ordered my Coby player from J&R using IE 7, XP Pro and JAWS 9, and had no
problems. This little gizmo is great. Just install the battery, plug the
player directly into a USB port, copy and paste your MP3 files into it and
enjoy. For best sound quality, substitute a better pair of earbuds than the
supplied pair. Too bad they're no longer avaiable for $10. But even for
$14.99, it's a great value for a blind-accessible MP3 player.

Re: [Blind-Computing] I took the plunge and am Now trying to gowithThunderbird

2009-12-17 Thread Donald Marang
JAWS does not work well with Microsoft Live Mail! Since Outlook Express and
Windows Mail are not available in Windows7, people are forced to switch to
something. FS has scripts for Live Mail in JAWS 10 and 11, but they have
lots of flaws. The JAWS 10 scripts actually work better for me than JAWS
11. I can not even read mail with JAWS 11! I need to switch to JAWS 10
every time I want to read mail. This gets very agravating! The scripts for
JAWS 10 are less annoying and my biggest complaint is that it will not
announce "unread" or indicate when there is an enclosure. FS is very aware
of the problem, do not seem interested in fixing the problems or even
admitting that they have scripts for Live Mail. They seem to think that
everybody should dish out more money for Outlook, since that is what all of
their corporate accounts require.

I am seriously thinking of switching to Thunderbird 3 as well, and I have
more interesting things to do than play around with a mail program. I have
downloaded the program, but have other things to do.

If so what is your experience like? Preferibly for those who are totally

I have a question.

I recently purchased a new laptop with windows seven

There was an area where I typed the name of the computer which I typed my

My name shows correctly on the start menu, and the welcome screen but not in

Re: [Blind-Computing] zoom text

2009-12-17 Thread David Griffith
I started out with Zoomtext with speech before moving onto Jaws as my sight
went..

I think even Zoomtext makers Ai squared admit that in terms of screen
reading Zoomtext is not in the same league as designated specialist
screenreaders like Jaws and has much less functionality. Zoomtext with
speech works best if you have limited vision. For example the app reader
works well only the web if you can see enough to spot the content that you
want read out on the page and click on that part of the web page. In this
sense the speech output from ZoomText is efficient and intuitive for those
who have enough sight to use screen, pointer and other enhancements enough
to use a mouse.

Where Zoomtext starts to fall down badly is if you do not have enough sight
to take advantage of these visual enhancements . So navigation on a web
page with the basic Zoomtext screen reader is pretty tortuous. This is
because you are pretty much limited to the tab and cursor keys as you are
without the recourse to navigation tools that a screen reader would provide.
. To be fair Zoomtext was never designed to be used by people who could not
take advantage of the visual and mouse pointer enhancements it affords. I do
not know it is still there but I remember reading on the AI squared site
that if you did not have enough sight to take advantage of the screen
enhancements you would be much better off with a specific screen reader like
Jaws. This was refreshing honesty and is absolutely right. Actually I think
a person without useful ability to use a mouse would be better off with NVDA
rather than Zoomtext.

Personally I found Zoomtext more intuitive and smooth than Magic and I would
unhesitatingly recommend it for someone who still wanted to be able to use a
computer with a mouse. I think it is a mistake to consider it as a
appropriate utility for those without enough sight to use a mouse. It is
simply not designed with these users in mind.

Regards

David Griffith

In the opening paragraphs of "A Christmas Carol" Dickens is overwrought
to express that Jacob Marley is dead:
"Mind! I don't mean to say that I know, of my own knowledge, what there
is particularly dead about a door-nail. I might have been inclined,
myself, to regard a coffin-nail as the deadest piece of ironmongery in
the trade. But the wisdom of our ancestors is in the simile; and my

Re: [Blind-Computing] zoom text

2009-12-17 Thread Chris Hallsworth
I actually find that mAGic, although developed for partially sighted
people, has a very good speech component. It even allows one to navigate
web pages just as if JAWS was reading with document presentation set to
screen layout. Ok, it's not as flexible as JAWS, but it's better than
nothing. I of course will use JAWS for my daily use, but like to try
other software too, and thought MAGic was quite good actually.

Hi,

I was wondering has anyone used zoom text with speech output?

If so what is your experience like? Preferibly for those who are totally
blind. I know, it's a program for visually impaired and not blind but with
the speech output, I can see how the program would be useable.

I don't think it's so much about being a non-conformist, but sometimes
there's something else that works better than a Microsoft product. I
haven't used Thunderbird, so I can't comment on it, but since it's a
Mozilla product, I'd be willing to bet it's more stable than Outlook
or Live Mail. The reason I say this is because I've used Firefox for
over a year now and love it. If you notice, IE doesn't have any such
plugin like WebVisum to help us blind folks out with captchas. Firefox
is also more secure. True, constantly updating your flash player and
quicktime can be annoying because you have to do taht in order for it
to play sounds, but I consider that a minor inconvenience considering
that it is much faster than IE. Sometimes people take the plunge and
break away from microsoft products because they're actually better!

Other than not using standard controls, I can not say that Live Mail sucks!
I actually like it a little better than Windows Mail. Not being able to use
first letter navigation in the Folders tree and not scrolling correctly so
JAWS will speak the folder name are probably Microsoft's fault. The
switching to a message view that displays html better is also a benefit in
the long run. Unfortunately JAWS does not always work as expected and often
gets stuck in forms mode and I can not get out without exiting JAWS and
restarting. It is a shame that the JAWS 11 scripts actually are worse and
any changes only seem to have broken things. The most troubling thing is
that Live Mail has been out a long time, and FS does not appear to want to
support it! That is why people are taking matters into their own hands and
finding a solution. It has nothing to do with being a non-conformist or

I am using windows live mail and actually liking it. Aside from having to
open forms mode more than once to start an email it is ok. I can get out of
forms mode with the pc cursor with no problem. I actually like the contacts

Gerald,
Is the sound quality via the ear buds pretty bad? Just curious. I'm
buying a new headset for my PC use soon, but I'll wait and judge for
myself and see if them buds sound good to me before I buy better
sounding ones.

MP3 files into it and enjoy. For best sound quality, substitute a

Hello all,
Well my wife decided to be nice to me and buy the new Coby MP3 Player
for me. Can't wait to get it! One note though. It works best with IE
8 to order from there site. She had some problems using Firefox. JAWS
wasn't reading the buttons to check out and a couple of other ones I
can't remember.

You could look in user accounts in control panel.

Re: [Blind-Computing] I took the plunge and am Now trying togowithThunderbird

2009-12-17 Thread ROSEMARIE CHAVARRIA
Hi,

I'm thinking of going to thunderbird myself. In fact, I already tried it with
NVDA and it works great. It's even more stable than outlook express. I've had
it up to here with windows messenger because it keeps interfering with whatever
tasks I need to do. My sighted nephew Dave's coming on Sunday to uninstall it
for me. I've done everything I know to do to get rid of messenger but nothing
works. I don't see the need to keep it because I really don't instant message
anymore. Even when I did instant message, it was only with a couple of people I
knew but that was it.

That's just my opinion.

Is that right, no Windows Mail in Windows 7? Actually, I believe that
Outlook Express and Windows Mail are the same basic program, but nonetheless
if neither are available in Windows 7, well if that isn't hors**it!
