[Blind-Computing] Need to create scheduled restart in Win XP

2010-07-15 Thread Barry G
Hi folks, I need to set my computer up to restart every day as I'm off on
holiday and want to leave DigiTV running to record things; I've found that the
program crashes if left unattended for more than a day or two...

I've been in to scheduled tasks and think I know how that
works. I have also set up a shortcut on my desktop with the target as
%windir%\system32\Shutdown.exe -r -t 00

This throws up some sort of error message when it activates if triggered by
scheduled tasks, although it works fine if activated by hitting enter on the
shortcut or using the hotkey assigned to it.

I used to create batch files in the old days of DOS but can't, for the life of
me, remember how to set one up, although I would presumably use the syntax as
above if I could remember how to go about creating the .bat file.

Has anyone got any ideas? I don't care how I achieve it, as long as I can get
the machine to reboot every day at a given time.

All the frustrated best,
Barry G

[Blind-Computing] daily tip

2010-07-15 Thread David Ferrin
PC Maintenance

Most PCs use traditional hard drives for file storage. Over time, the continual
data writes and deletions of everyday PC

usage start to take a toll on a drive's data transfer speed.
As a hard drive's capacity fills with files, it stores new information on parts
of the disks that are slower to write and

read. Moreover, a very full drive will pose problems for the OS (operating
system), which requires a certain amount of free

drive space to run properly. Therefore, you should occasionally run a utility,
such as Windows' Disk Cleanup or Piriform's

CCleaner (www.piriform.com) to get rid of junk files. While you're at it,
uninstall programs you no longer need.

Also, as free space dwindles into small chunks, a drive starts to store large
files in fragments. This bogs down reads and

writes, too. Use an automatic defragmentation utility to keep your computers
sprightly.

[Blind-Computing] Yahoo account settings

2010-07-15 Thread Hamid AITOUZNAG

Hi all,

I use thunderBird to import my gmail account mail. When I tried to add
another yahoo account, thunderBird kept producing error messages saying
that access to yahoo has been refused. I did a google research for the
correct settings and tried many suggested ones there til i managed to
make thunderBird send my e-mails, however, i am still getting an error
message while checking for my yahoo e-mails.

In brief, now i can send E-mails but can not receive them from my yahoo
account, please help...

[Blind-Computing] Disabling GMail Address Book

2010-07-15 Thread Eleni Vamvakari
Yesterday, when I sent an e-mail to you, it wound up also going to
one of my friends. I do everything through the web with GMail, and
because I didn't know your address off-hand, I was copying and pasting
it in. But then, NVDA would stop speaking and I had no idea that it
was putting the name of the group and then the address in the to
field. I thought I'd accidentally copied the extra information
instead of just the address, so I deleted it. I usually type in
addresses so don't come across this very often. In any case, is there
a way for me to make GMail not automatically paste in e-mail addresses
or change the ones I do paste in by adding names etc in them? It
would be fine if I could see it doing that but when I type in the
first few characters, I have to then wait for NVDA, then get out of
the form and go back in again to make sure that it chose the correct
address.

Thanks,
Eleni

[Blind-Computing] A Few Programming Questions

2010-07-15 Thread Eleni Vamvakari
Hi,

I'm interested in programming, mostly for myself, but am willing to
share with any other DOS users out there. I like proceedural
languages, where you write out all the steps that a computer must take
to do things and I naturally prefer the cli and tui interfaces with
commands, hotkeys and easy-to-use menus. I don't like object-oriented
languages, particularly graphical ones as I like a more straight
forward approach both as a user and as a programmer. I've just
started learning batch programming, since I was told this would be an
easy way for me to learn the basics. I'm really excited about the
many ways in which I can customise my machine and can't wait to learn
how to use this powerful language to do all sorts of things. I had
planned on learning QuickBASIC, either during or after the batch
programming, but today, someone recommended that I should learn
FreeBASIC for DOS. Has anyone worked with this language? If so, what
are the main differences between it and QB and what are the benefits
of using it? Does it have it's own built-in compiler and if so, how
accessible is it? If not, then can you recommend a compiler for it
that will work with a screen reader like VocalEyes? Is it anything
like Visual BASIC? Wikipedia has the Hello World program written in
BASIC, QuickBASIC and Visual BASIC and the latter totally confused me.
I'd much rather something similar to QB. Also, has anyone here
worked with DBASE and Clipper? I'm considering learning that as well.
It might be really early to ask this, but can anyone give me some
general tips on making my programs accessible? I know that I have to
write to the bios and not to the screen but am not sure if this will
be an issue with the languages that I'll be using. Finally, can I
create a tsr with said languages?

Thanks,
Eleni

[Blind-Computing] QWITTER ISSUES NOT MAKING IT TO LIST

2010-07-15 Thread Josh
B-C members,

I am not sure if my messages are being rejected by the server or not. I have
posted a couple of different times regarding my problems with Qwitter. If this
is not the place to post such message please someone direct me in the right
direction. Qwitter message posted two different times but I do not think either
one made it to the list pasted below.

members,
Afew days ago I posted a problem I was having with Qwitter. The problem still
exist. I had Qwitter back several months ago and had to uninstall it. When I
went to uninstall it I do not remember if Qwitter had an uninstall selection on
their icon on the start menu but I either went through the icon or the
add/remove programs in the control panel. The problem is Qwitter downloads
properly or at least goes through the motions this is on a reinstall of
Qwitter. When Qwitter appeared to not be opening up correctly I went to
uninstall the program again in the same fashion as before and got a message
that all the elements could not be removed but it also said I could remove the
elements manually. Can someone please assist me with this? Once the other
elements are removed i think Qwitter should install as it should.

messages to see if they went through. But I think in my case it's
just that most on here can't answer them or maybe the ones who can

If so, what

Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] QWITTER

Hi,

Programs that tell you of files you have to manually remove will usually
refer to the following situations:

(1) settings stored in INI files which you may need to use later; or
(2) Programs that create files which are useful to you. In other words,
the program would have created such files by your own action.

Now the nest question is how to remove such files.
Well, using a file manager such as 7zip file manager or even our native
Windows Explorer, navigate to Program Files (often C:\Program Files\,
find the folder where Quitter had been installed.
Highlight the folder, Then Press Shift+Delete to permanently wipe off the
folder from the face of the earth. Well, if you don't mind the recycle bin
size, just press delete and the folder will be sent back to the recycle
bin instead.

Next, you need to navigate to where programs often store their settings. I
am not sure which Windows OS you're using, but the folder on XP should be
C:\Documents and Settings\your user name\app data.
In this folder, you will find lots of folders referring to different
programs that store their settings there.

Find that of Quitter.
Now without opening the folder of Quitter, repeat the same operation you
did in Program Files: namely, press shift+delete to destroy the folder and
all its contents (the settings).
After this, you are clean: you're ready to install a fresh copy of
Quitter.

Actually Quitter is cool: so I wish you all the best. Any problem just
post with detail.
By the way, I made some assumptions like C:\program files for this is
the normal storage area of all installed programs unless you changed; if
you did so, just substitute my bigoted Program Files with your correct
path.
Another bigoted or assumption is the your user name just substitute that
phrase in angle brackets with your own username you are logged with.
Another issue you need to sort out is if you are on Windows 7, you need
not enter the C:\documents .. path, users have got a special folder in
the root.

Cheers,

Ishe

For whatever it's worth, take some advice from a somewhat grizzled veteran

found it to be an excellent way of transitioning to the GUI world. It works
pretty well with a screen reader (at that time Jaws 4.2). The EXE files that
the compiler generates also produces fairly good screen reader compliant
results. I hope this helps.

I don't know FreeBasic and I don't remember much DOS but I doubt that
FreeBasic will enable you to interface with the BIOS.
Basic is a very high-level language.

 Hi,

I think there's a list for programmers you can join to have all your
programming questions answered. I haven't used dos in years so I forgot most

of what I learned. I never really got into the programming aspect of it so
again I'm of no help here. Sorry about that.

Subject: [Blind-Computing] A Few Programming Questions

 Thanks,
 Eleni

members,
Afew days ago I posted a problem I was having with Qwitter.

Hi all,

NO no, your messages arrive here. The problem is that sometimes just
our messages get passed through unnoticed. That's what happened to me a
couple of times: the last one was when i asked about yahoo account
settings for mozilla thunderbird but haven't got any replies up to now.

I think we just have to be patient, and maybe if we don't get any
answers we just should post the same question again hoping for a the best...

[Blind-Computing] My Dream Computer: Am I Missing Anything?

2010-07-15 Thread Eleni Vamvakari
Awhile ago, I was considering a laptop or a palmtop. Well, I couldn't
find a palmtop that matched my specifications (alot less than these of
course), so decided to try for a laptop or desktop. I sent my request
to several places, and one company, JG Custom PCs, said that they' be
willing to make one for me. The laptop would be out of my price range
but the desktop would be far less than the $600-$800 that I'd set as
my highest prices. Plus, it would give me great flexibility and true
customisability. So here are my final computer specs that I sent to
the technician. Please let me know if I've missed anything essential
and feel free to make comments or to ask questions. He hasn't started
building it yet and is in the process of looking for parts. If you're
not interested in reading all the specs then I'd like to know one
thing. Should I get PCI or ISA slots or neither? I've already
included serial and parallel ports and pcmcia and scsi slots. But I'm
not sure if I'll need a pci or isa slot and wouldn't want to be
without one if I do. If you have a laptop that meets a good number of
these specs and are willing to sell it, could you please let me know
offlist? The 5.25 floppy, cd rom, scsi slot, ethernet jack and usb
port are not necessary on the laptop. I'd also like something under 7
lbs. if possible and with less than a 14.1 screen (smaller is better).
Needless to say, I'll also except a desktop if you have it, same
exceptions apply, with the addition of the pcmcia slot not being
necessary, since most desktops don't have those. But having both
floppies would be nice. The only catch is that it has to have some
DOS drivers, at least for important things like the bios, or I'm not
sure if I'll be able to have the os installed on it, which explains
why I didn't simply buy one from Ebay. But I can do the research if
you give me the name and model.

Stars mean that something is essential and dbd means determined by
designer.  The optional section is idealistic and not necessary.
