[Blind-Computing] CA (Charted Accountant) course

2010-08-02 Thread Silpa Mallipeddi
Hi All:

I would like to know what are the courses that can be taken to go for
CA after finishing 10th class.

And if one wants to go for Aeronautics, can I know the courses to be
taken after finishing 10th class.

What screen readers support 'React', an Operating System.
Has anybody on the list used and if so, can you share your experiences
in using it.

Thanks and regards,
Silpa.

[Blind-Computing] Laptop environment

2010-08-02 Thread Milos Przic
   Hi all,
Recently there was a message warning us that of the consequences of
overheating the laptop having it on the bed. As I knew it and it was not
something new for me, I still want to ask some similar questions.
Can laptop be dammaged if in the constant moving while active? For example,
in a car that passes many high curves.
Next, if I have to use my laptop outside and I have to expose it on the sun
as in a certain moment it is not possible to protect it, what parts of the
laptop are most resistible to the sun? So if I have to expose it, how to do
that with minimal risk?
Thanks to all, and best regards!

Re: [Blind-Computing] Laptop environment

2010-08-02 Thread Ishe Chinyoka
Depends with how your laptop is positioned while in transit. For instance,
if the car has got pressure absorbers, even if you are moving on a bumpy
road, it will be fine. I think it is wise just to make sure that the PC is
not directly placed on the car surface: you can place it on a velvet or
padded surface if you are using it. However, if it is not being used, the
best way would be to package it in padded boxes, or better still just leave
it in its carrying bag.

On the other hand, I personally think it is not safe to expose electronic
gadgets like laptops to the sun for a long time. With Respect To part of the
laptop to be exposed, I find that this may be when the laptop is shut.
Generally, PCs should be used in a cool environment as high temperatures, or
heat to be particular, is dangerous to some parts of the PC. We may differ
on this head, but I bet that to be safe, you shouldn't work for a long time
in the sun with a laptop: better to do that in the shade. This also reminds
me that exposure of this nature may also lead to damage not only through the
sun, but even dust particles.

2010-08-02 Thread Milos Przic
Yes, but I am asking about the situation when the laptop is active on the
move. I forexample had a situation where I was holding my laptop on my knees
while on a bus, and the bus drived through some holes in the road so it
seamed like it jumbed up a few times, and I was holding the laptop with my
hands in order not to bump on my knees. That are the situations I am asking
for.

What's the quickest and best way to navigate to that and other stuff on fb with

The easiest way i know to do this is to open the page. it is usually the
first edit field so hit control home to get to top of the page then hit
e to get to the field you want. type what you want it to say and then
hit tab to get to the button to share and hit enter. This is using the
mobile version but the normal one should be the same i think.

I manage to find most information about groups, events, etc. via the mobile
site.

Only thing couldn't really manage was enabling simple uploading of images
etc., but since I managed to enable the MMS sending of them via my phone
that's now sorted, but think had to go to normal site to make that happen -
don't remember all details, and, the site changes structure often enough
that it wouldn't necessarily be the same 2 days in a row smile

The easiest way i know to do this is to open the page. it is usually the

That depends on what you have auto forms mode set to. If you hit insert
b you can arrow down until it says auto forms mode by default it should

Re: [Blind-Computing] Laptop environment

2010-08-02 Thread Russ Hubley
Hi Milos,

I am using a small Toshiba ultra portable. When I have to use it for an
extended period of time, I notice that it does get warm. I don't worry about
this until I hear the fans constantly running.

At Staples and many other places they have a small laptop desk that sits on
your lap. It has bean bags under it that allow it to comfortably sit on your
lap. These are somewhat weighted which helps my laptop not move around to
much as I am typing. There are vents on the top of this unit which allow my
laptop to breathe.

Mine also has fans in it that cool my laptop. It uses a USB cable to plug in
to my laptop for power. I don't use these fans when I am on the move, only
at home when I am plugged in to home power because I have noticed that it
does put a slight drain on the battery.

Take care,
Russ

   Hi all,
Recently there was a message warning us that of the consequences of
overheating the laptop having it on the bed. As I knew it and it was not
something new for me, I still want to ask some similar questions.
Can laptop be dammaged if in the constant moving while active? For
example, in a car that passes many high curves.
Next, if I have to use my laptop outside and I have to expose it on the
sun as in a certain moment it is not possible to protect it, what parts of
the laptop are most resistible to the sun? So if I have to expose it, how to
do that with minimal risk?

[Blind-Computing] Firefox and flash

2010-08-02 Thread Chris Feist
HI. When using Firefox, often when I go to a Web site with video, I'll need
to click on a button to play the flash content but then there is no button.
However, when I go to the same site in Internet Explorer, the button is
displayed and I can click on it just fine.

I know Internet Explorer and Firefox are similar but not exactly the same,
but this difference has always confused me. I know I can just open Internet
Explorer when I need to use flash, but if Firefox can be configured to work
flash that would be better.

Thanks,

Chris

2010-08-02 Thread Jacob Kruger
You might still use it to activate forms mode on something like a drop down
box, or listbox, etc., but from (I think) jaws 10, it should generally
automatically go into forms mode when you enter a text field, and you could
then use the large numpad plus/virtual cursor key on the numpad to turn it
off more safely than hitting enter since that might submit some forms.

[Blind-Computing] getting sappy 4 to work properly

2010-08-02 Thread ROSEMARIE CHAVARRIA
Hi, everyone,

I like the sappy 4 voice in NVDA but at times it doesn't always work properly.
It either spells words as I read emails or sometimes it will stop talking. Do
any of you use the sappy 4 voice? If so, how did you get it to work properly?

Thanks for your help in advance.

[Blind-Computing] Irritating prompt on IE8 startup relating to re-opening last session - found the fix for it

2010-08-02 Thread Jacob Kruger
As the subject line mentions, every time after restarting computer, and then
when I started internet explorer 8, it would bring up a prompt saying something
like that the last browsing session had had an unexpected closing down of the
session or something like that even if I knew for definite I had closed all app
windows before shutting machine down.

Either way, just found what seems to be the fix for that issue, since it
occured to me that it might be somewhat related to tabbed browsing, since you
can have multiple home pages, which are meant to all open at the start of a
session, etc.

Anyway, if you go into the Tools menu, and hit on internet options, and on the
general page, tab over to 'Tabbed browsing settings', and hit space bar on it
to activate that button, when that dialogue pops up, tab over to 'Open only the
first home page when Internet Explorer starts', and check it (if that setting
suits you).

Then tab over to Ok button, hit space on it, tab over to main options
dialogue's Ok button and hit space bar on it, and then, unless I'm just
confused, the irritating issue will go away, like mine just seems to have.

Stay well

[Blind-Computing] Site for BBS Users and Sysops

Here is an incredible website for those interested in using and/or

not have to deal with annoying graphics and other unnecessary clutter.

Try reinstalling the program that came with a SAPI4 synthesizer, such as

I think the others are correct in that you would most likely need to try IE
7+.

FWIW, pretty sure it's due to something related to the target market for the
mobile site, since the request/response headers for the web server
communications/web pages could be slightly different since they assume you'd
be accessing the site from a mobile/cellphone web browser, and that could be
'bothering' IE6 since it's a bit older, but anyway...

Re: [Blind-Computing] Site for BBS Users and Sysops

2010-08-02 Thread Eleni Vamvakari
Taken from the site.

The definition of a BBS has changed over time. No longer are we just
a modem dial-up system running at a whopping 2400 baud (for you
youngsters, that's pretty darn slow). Instead we are connected to the
Internet and offer other services such as a Web interface, FTP and
more - depending on how sophisticated the system is.

So apparently, you don't need a DOS computer, tellnet or a dial-up
connection to access some of the boards out there, since they're on
the net. But they also have some regular ones as well as a guide on
how to use them for those interested.

Good luck,
Eleni

Re: [Blind-Computing] So... how do ya change your status on FBthis?week?

2010-08-02 Thread Josh
I think it is a matter of personal preference whether a person uses the
mobile or Pc version of facebook. I usually will use the Pc version of
facebook but if I need to post something then i will switch to the mobile
site as I have found it easier to post on the mobile site. I do not like the
mobile site myself for just general browsing of the page as it does not seem
to give you all the information that the Pc site gives. I understand that it
is a condensed version therefore not as many applications but it also seems
as though you have to keep hitting older post to see even half of what the
PC version site provides as far as messages from friends. I do fully agree
with others view point that the mobile site is more blind friendly
especially when it comes to posting messages. So all-in-all I think it is
just what a person gets use to using. Take care

I use the mobile site too. The regular one gives me a headache. But
the mobile site won't let me see the entire description of a group or
it's discussion boards. I also have to use the main site to edit some
parts of my profile. I wish they'd just allow access to everything so
that I didn't have to switch between them and deal with this nonsense.

 Hi Matthew,

If you mean the K-lite codec i sent yesterday. It is Me Hamid H a m
i d. I know most screen readers pronounce my name like hannah. Hamid
is an arabic name for males not females.

Now back to the player. After installing it, find under your start
menu/all programs, a submenu called K-lite codec pack. Open it with
your right arrow or enter and locate media player clasic and hit
enter. Of course it is preferable if you assign a hotkey to this item
 for quicker launching.

After the program is loaded, you can use the keystrokes I included
yesterday, find them coppied below. One you would need now is
control+q to open a file or control+d to open a DVD. Another useful
keystroke i forgot to mention yesterday is Control or alt+page down
or page up to jump to the next or previous file respectively if for
example you have many open files. Of course some keystrokes would be
unavailable until a file is open.

 SpaceBar = Play/pause
 Period = stop
 Control+Right arrow = Forward 5 seconds Left arrow = rewind 5 seconds
 Up Arrow = increase volume
 Down arrow = decrease volume
 Control+m = mute
 Control+Q = quick open
 Control+O = open
 Control+D = open DVD
Control+C = close open file or files
Control+5 = toggles the status bar
JawsKey+PageDown = read status bar, it contains info about the
file's duration, the elapsed time and the active control.
 O = program options

 Good luck!

In a recent article, I read a glowing report about the VLC Media player

But i can't make it function.
Below, you will find my questions and if anyone can help, I'd certainly

least for me.
I'm running an HP Pavillian 6510 with 4 gigs of RAM and a 750 gig hard

I'm running Windows 7 Professional and Jaws 11, the latest build.

1. If you load VLC, do you have to make some special adjustments to get it
to read and allow the user to interact with tracking information?

2. If yes, where do I find those settings and please provide detailed
instructions.

3. I was told that it doesn't read the actual text but just says Track 1,

just go into your jaws to options tab around until you get to the check box

Hi John,

Well, it is not a plugIn for windows media player, it is an independent
application called k-lite codeck. it has a built-in application for
playing most file formats. I can sent it to you with the instructions if
you like. It is very late here and i need to get some sleep. I will

I tried VLC and got absolutely nowhere.
I have the latest version of Windows Media Player and if there's a way to

SpaceBar = Play/pause
Period = stop
Control+Right arrow = Forward 5 seconds Left arrow = rewind 5 seconds
Up Arrow = increase volume
Down arrow = decrease volume
Control+m = mute
Control+Q = quick open
Control+O = open
Control+D = open DVD
Control+C = close open file or files
Control+5 = toggles the status bar
JawsKey+PageDown = read status bar, it contains info about the
file's duration, the elapsed time and the active control.
O = program options

Good luck!
