Daily Tip:
Large Charge

No one is really satisfied with the state of rechargeable batteries these
days. Laptops have grown so powerful that you may not be able to watch a
whole DVD movie before the battery quits. And expensive battery packs can
wear out in as little as a year, depending on usage patterns. If you're
faced with buying a replacement, and you're willing to accept some extra
weight, bulk, and cost, look into the availability of an extended battery
pack for your model of notebook. An extended battery has more cells and
can provide significantly longer charge life.

Hello all:

Sorry for my first attempt at sending this message and am now resending it with
my request.

I hope someone on this list can help me. My coffee maker has died after ten
years of excellent service and I need to purchase a new one. Does anyone know
an internet site where I can purchase the same type of Coffee Maker?

The last time I logged on to Amazon I was not able to find what I wanted except
for the paper filters that go with the product.

Hey everybody,

I'm using XP SP3 on my Asus netbook and I'm unclear about which power
settings will avail me of the maximum battery life between charges.
Currently, I'm getting only about 45 minutes with the following max
battery settings:

Power Options Properties
Power Schemes Alarms Power Meter Advanced Hibernate
Select the power scheme with the most appropriate settings for
this computer. Note that changing the settings below will modify
the selected scheme.
Power schemes
Always On
Save As... Delete
Settings for Always On power scheme
When computer is: Running on Plugged in batteries
Turn off monitor: After 20 mins After 15 mins
Turn off hard disks: Never After 30 mins
System standby: Never Never
OK Cancel Apply

Normal usage for this netbook is Internet browsing, checking e-mail
and e-book reading, with occasional audio streaming from the web.

Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

Mike, much depends on what the 2 programs do. Let me give a bit of
background, then perhaps, by way of that, address your question.

In the not so very distant past, spyware viruses were pretty much

that 1 antivirus 1 antispyware program could generally run together
in realtime w/o conflict.

Malware has, unfortunately, become much more sophisticated. Viruses
drop trojans which create a backdoor into your computer allow all
kinds of information to be passed to some1, e.g., spyware. Thus, the
distinction between viruses spyware-- other types of malware, for
that matter--have blurred considerably over the past few years. The
result is that antivirus programs have evolved to become
antivirus/antispyware programs, trying to become, as it were, all
protection for all malware, all things to all people, etc.

The answer to your question is that it really depends on what the
programs do. If the antivirus program confines itself to looking for
file signatures, etc., while the antispyware program monitors registry
changes browser redirects, then it's probably safe. If, on the other
hand, the 2 programs monitor for similar things, then conflict can
does result. The problem further arises when both try to quarantine
something at the same time, obviously, it is for this reason that
malware experts suggest running only 1 realtime security suite type
program, e.g., antivirus/antispyware program, at any given time. What
I personally do is to run my antivirus/antispyware program (Avast) in
realtime. Then I scan w/Superantispyware or MalwareBytes weekly or so,
just to get rid of tracking cookies other annoying nasties that may

lots of crap-ola gets in there.

So what I personally would do would be to run Microsoft Security
Essentials in realtime, let SAS be an on-demand scanner. I know some
listers have run both w/o difficulty, but I can't help wondering what
would happen if both try to quarantine the same threat--neither 1
might win your protection may well be compromised. I remember
getting this as a first exercise of my malware removal training,
this is pretty much how I answered it then, too, passed, so
hopefully it'll suffice.

I hope I've made myself sufficiently clear, invite further queries
if I haven't.

Blessings for a wonderful holiday season.

2010-12-28 Thread Jackie McBride
Well, Norma, u don't tell us what type of netbook it is, how big is
the display, its resolution, etc.

I do a couple things in this situation. Generallly speaking, there is
1 or a couple utilities located in the system tray to accomplish them.
1) I disable the camera enable it only when I want it.
2) When I can't connect to the internet, I disable the wireless.

Usually the netbook senses when you're on battery dims the display.
Unfortunately, it won't let u disable it or u could get superb battery
life. I personally bought a bigger battery for mine which gives me
about 10 hours battery life.

BTW, just FYI, ( this has nothing to do w/battery life), I was having
some severe issues w/my netbook until I went in disabled the
gestures on my touchpad (control panel mouse pointing devices
hardware settings). My issues are gone. Some of them included:
difficulty using jaws find;
Email disappearing while in the middle of writing it;
Applications losing focus, etc.

Try it--u might like it. I'd disable the bleapin thing entirely but my
sighted family members sometimes get on here so I can't kill it
completely, dad gum it!

Mike, much depends on what the 2 programs do. Let me give a bit of
background, then perhaps, by way of that, address your question.

In the not so very distant past, spyware viruses were pretty much
distinct entities, the programs designed to protect the computer
from each did quite different things. Antivirus programs tended to
look for what's called file signatures, e.g., certain strings in
files that were suggestive of a virus, while antispyware programs
tended to monitor things like registry changes, where the browser was
being taken to, etc. That's fairly oversimplified, but the crux was
that 1 antivirus 1 antispyware program could generally run together
in realtime w/o conflict.

What
I personally do is to run my antivirus/antispyware program (Avast) in
realtime. Then I scan w/Superantispyware or MalwareBytes weekly or so,
just to get rid of tracking cookies other annoying nasties that may
have popped up. BTW, 1 thing that can really help keep the bugs in
check is to simply delete your temporary internet files often--lots
lots of crap-ola gets in there.

I remember

Re: [Blind-Computing] microphone sounding awful

2010-12-28 Thread Jackie McBride
Yvonne, u really need to have a headset to plug into your computer,
because if u try to just use microphone speakers, you'll get
terrible feedback. Truthfully, it's best to use a good quality USB
headset w/skype, but, if u don't have that, you'll need to at least
plug a headset into your computer so that u don't have a huge bunch of
feedback.

[Blind-Computing] Modem and router Problems

2010-12-28 Thread Josh
Friends,
Thank you all for the advice offered on this problem. I have not really had an
opportunity to really get down and dig into the heart of the problem yet due to
my sighted fiance's work schedule. If it does turn out to be a router issue I
want to be able to go to Wal-Mart and get this issue corrected while dealing
with the router. However, before my fiance went back to work today on her day
off we did unplug all the wires on the modem and router including taking out
the battery. My fiance said all the lights on the modem were lit up, but on the
router all the lights except the power light was lit on the router. The power
button was pushed in and out a couple of times on the router with no change to
the power light. I have several emails with great advice and I have no doubt
that the solution will be found in one of them. Thank you all again

Hi Andre;

You are correct about the left arrowing. It seems like I had tried left
arrowing more than once in the past with no success. I should have tried
your suggestion before responding. I'm sorry for attempting to make a
correction when a correction wasn't necessary. Please accept my apologies.
Take care.

Mike. Why wouldn't pressing left arrow once work rather than pressing
right
  arrow 5 times?
I also see that you are correct in one not needing to use the jaws cursor
to
read the About dialogue, but either way its just as easy to read such
  details.

  Hi Marilyn;

Do as Andre says except, after you tab to the home button, right arrow
instead of left arrow to Additional Help Options, press enter, arrow down
to About Security Essentials, press enter, press control + Home to take
the
cursor to the top of the page , arrow down 1 line at time, after
arrowing
down 1 time you should hear Jaws read 2.0.657.0 . Hope this helps.
Take
  care.

To confirm installation of MSE2.0 launch MSE.
Tab till you come across the Home button
Left arrow to Additional help options and press enter.
Up arrow once to About Security Essentials and press enter.
Use jaws cursor to read the whole screen.
There should be a reference to you running version 2.0.
Remember, this information is from Andre.
