Some USB devices draw power from the USB connection. Consider the total power draw from all of the devices. Drawing too much power can cause problems with your computer. There are unpowered USB Hubs that are convenient for low power devices like keyboards. There are also powered USB Hubs with their own power adapter to relieve the strain from your computer. For external drives, printers and large scanners, a powered hub is recommended. I don't know of this program but you can set each program to maximize If you have the icon on the desktop Highlight it and tap the application key Just up arrow once to properties and enter tab through and when you get to the run selection This is a radio button so use the arrow key to get to maximize and then tab to okay! I did this for each program on my desktop and also others in the start menu and mine have remained maximized with no problems! Good luck! [Blind-Computing] memo please read
I feel it is important starting out a new month to bring to your attention the following couple of items. Everybody please read the footer message located at the bottom of each and every post sent out to the list. It is brief only two lines, but it contains all of the information you need to find answers too many questions regarding the mailing lists housed on this domain. The help page lists all of the addresses for subscribing ETC as well as the web pages for Blind Computing and JAWS Users along with the archives, and much more. This past week alone almost a half a dozen people wrote to me privately asking how to un-subscribe and other things. Personally it is beyond me that a person can subscribe to a mailing list and yet need help to un-subscribe. There is an audio tutorial on the server that will walk you through the process of changing your settings in Mailman which is the program that manages these mailing lists for me. It will discuss changing to digest mode, going no mail and resuming normal delivery ETC. If that is a bit over somebody's head that is some what understandable but for the most of you I'm thinking it is well with in your ability to figure out. If not then you can of course write to the owner address to ask either Bob, Rick or me to change your settings for you. Just remember we do not keep track of such things so for example if you want to go on vacation or what ever then you need to contact us again to have your delivery turned back on. Don't write to say you'll be away next week so reactivate my account next Saturday. You will need to write next Saturday to have us turn it back on for you. Also use the owner address listed on the help page, do not write to any of us directly because if who ever you contact is away then the other two guys have no idea you need something as the owner address goes to all of us at once. If you are changing your internet provider and do not quite understand how to switch your email address with Mailman then the easiest thing to do would simply be un-subscribe your old address and subscribe with your new one. Yes we can change that for you on the server but that is something you can do yourselves quite easily. There are well over 500 members on the JAWS Users List and almost 400 on Blind Computing so as you can imagine this kind of thing could start to mount in to a lot of background work for us and if that happens then it takes away from our time to answer questions on the lists which I figure most of you would rather have us do instead of getting bogged down in administrative work. One was 420 MB and the other was 130 MB in size. They asked me why one movie was so much larger in size than the other. Well, I had converted one movie from .ogg format to mp3 format, and forgot to change the Bit from 320 to perhaps 128 with my Switch converter. The other smaller size movie was already in mp3 format, so that one I did not have to convert to mp3 as my friend cannot open and play .ogg files in their Windows Media Player, they do not have the Plug-in I have. Now, sorry to be so long about this question, but I had a hard time explaining the difference in a audio file with a bit rate of 320 as opposed to a smaller size bit rate. I know when uploading or downloading I get a message stating I am uploading at a bit rate of for example 50.5 KB/sec, and I download at around 750 KB/sec, but how does one state the Bit Rate of an Audio file? I mean, it is not KB/sec as when you are uploading or downloading. I do not know what or how you would call the Bit rate of an Audible File, does some one have a clear explanation that I can understand? I would very much appreciate it! Re: [Blind-Computing] document files listed by date
Hi, Here is what I do. There may be a better and easier way. I open the folder and route Jaws to PC. Then I arrow up until I here name. I then do insert+numPad6 until I hear date modified. I move the cursor to modified and left click on the NumPad. This will sort in date order in ascending order. Repeating this step will change it to descending order. To sort alphabetically again, repeat the steps mentioned above and left click on name. Hope this works for you. Take care. Cliff asks: Other than typing the information: Is there a way to insert the present into a non-excel document? A word document, to be precise. Cliff, I'm going to presume that you meant the present date; use the CNTRL+, key sequence for the date - if it's the current time then type CNTRL+. And for future reference on how to do something with the keyboard, you can always open the keyboard manager for the specific application and look for the specific task you want to perform. If there's a key sequence to do it, it will be listed in the keyboard manager. Give a man a fish and you've fed him for a day, teach a man to fish and you've fed him for a lifetime. Re: [Blind-Computing] internet explorer 9 problem
Hello Since my post last night I have had a couple of replies including one to my personal email address The one to my email address has passed on a post that was overlooked for some reason This went on to say that I e 9 was unsupported and people were advised not to download install and use it . Not just yet anyway. Therefore it has been suggested that I go back to version 8 As far as I know I was able to use I e 8 with both jaws 10 and 11. But that was when I had xp. Now I have w7. So I upgraded to I e 9 as it was said that I e 9 was for w7 and jaws 12 was best one to use for I e 9. But as my post said I am having problems with I e 9 w7 and jaws 11 and 12. Now I can't remember where I can download and install I e 8. If it is possible I would like to have a self installing version like skyptalking has. If such a thing is not available then just download will do So can someone tell me some sites where I can get I e 8 for use on w7 systems And of course jaws 11 Thank you Yvonne -Original Message- From: blind-computing-boun...@jaws-users.com [mailto:blind-computing-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Yvonne Oliver Sent: 02 April 2011 00:00 To: blind-computing@jaws-users.com Subject: [Blind-Computing] internet explorer 9 problem Hello For some reason I am having a problem with internet explorer 9. For example I went to Debenhams website and the Debenhams opening page loaded ok. But when I went down arrow all jaws said for ages is blank blank for each press of the down arrow After a lengthy period of time jaws would announce a heading followed by blank blank blank. It's as though there are things missing and that is why jaws says blank. I could be wrong here but it is the only thing I can think of Does anyone know what is causing this and how can it be put right?. Debenhams is not the only website this happens on using I e 9. I go to amazon and before this happened if I press the letter b I could go to several places such as add to basket proceed to checkout etcetera. Now when I press button b all I get is jaws saying one or 2 things followed by wrapping to top.it no longer gives me the choices of adding to the basket and proceeding to the checkout. hi Mike, well i think my brain must have frozen. I have been sent a folder by a colleague which has each file named followed by the date created, as there are seven hundred files in all it is a bit of a nightmare. Lennie method works for him but I can't hack it, I found modified through your system but I couldn't change it to work. Never mind time for icecream I think. Any thoughts gratefully acceptted. Re: [Blind-Computing] Another dating question
Cliff, My sincerest apologies, the key sequences I offered were incorrect. The correct key sequences (for Excel) are: current date - CONTROL+; current Time - CONTROL+SHIFT+; Lest those lines are confusing, the basic sequence is to use the control key along with the semi-colon key, that will insert the current date; if you include the SHIFT key in the key sequence the current time will be inserted. Re: [Blind-Computing] internet explorer 9 problem
Hi Yvonne, I have not tried it on my system, but I suspect if you uninstall IE9, then the system will revert to IE8. The problem is this. When I start I e 9 it loads with no problem My opening page is there and I can arrow up and down with no problem. However when I visit a website either by pressing f6 or by going to favourites the following thing happens All I get is jaws saying blank blank blank. Therefore can anyone help with this? I am using windows 7 jaws 11 And internet explorer 9 Thank you Yvonne For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/ Send any questions regarding list management to: blind-computing-ow...@jaws-users.com For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/ For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/

Re: [Blind-Computing] document files listed by date
Niamh, First off, nobody has specified how you are displaying the files of which you speak. I will assume that you are displaying that list in the list view of windows explorer. If this assumption is inaccurate, all the following is possibly inaccurate. At the top of the list of files is a line containing column headings. The column headings can differ from one user's computer to another user's computer because the user can select which file descriptors to be displayed. You will need to use the JAWS CURSOR to navigate to these column headings. When you have placed the JAWS CURSOR on the appropriate column heading, click the left mouse button to sort the list by the values in that column. Clicking a second time on that same heading will sort in the reverse order from the first sorted order. HINT: Sometimes, this only works properly when the JAWS CURSOR is on the second or third character in the name of the column heading. So, for example, if the column heading is modified, place the JAWS CURSOR on the letter d in the word modified before clicking the left mouse button. hth Bob - Original Message - From: Niamh niam.mcke...@gmail.com To: blind-computing@jaws-users.com Sent: Saturday, April 02, 2011 1:11 PM Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] document files listed by date hi Mike, well i think my brain must have frozen. Either way Donny, just like our fearless leaderDave says, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. If you're running IE 8 and there are no problems, than it's more than likely a good bet that you should leave well enough alone. Smiles.
