I went to their site this morning and I agree with your findings. They must have made recent changes to the site which now make it very inaccessible with Jaws 10. This is very unfortunate, as the Southwest site was one of the model sites that I use when demonstrating accessible verses non-accessible sites to grad students in a Human/Computer Interaction class. Re: [Blind-Computing] google crome question
First, remove Google Chrome, which was probably installed when you updated CCleaner. Next, if you're running XP, access Set Program Access and Defaults on the Start menu by pressing the Windows key and hitting S until you land on it. Tab to the Custom button and hit Space to expand it. Tab to Firefox and hit Space bar to checkit. Finally, tab to the Okay button. This should restore Firefox as your default browser. [Blind-Computing] Computer tech resource
Just wanted to let anyone who is interested know, registration is now open for an awesome resource for classes on learning about building/repairing/maintaning computers as well as others on networking available on-line. And the good news is it is taught by and for blind individuals. Students range from folks that just want to learn more about computers to be more self sufficient and confident, to those wanting Cisco certification or A+ certification. It is available for anyone throughout the world, There is info at the address below, but trust me it is more laid back and less intimidating than it appears... good folks. I am in the midst of IT Essentials and entered with little to know ggeek knowledge and learning a lot. They also have what is called CaviCasts, which are couple hour demos on various applications and etc. One recent demo was done by one of the developers of NVDA who came in for QA and various walk throughs, another was a demo by blind users of the incredibly affordable multi-track recording software Reaper, other sessions were things like discussion of backup methods and apps, use of effects in sound recordings, and a range of topics. Its worth checking out. http://www.cucat.org/about/courses.php Courses are very reasonable, I could have paid for them already for work I had done just prior to my starting this class. You can also email them for more info at cavii...@cucat.org Thought some might like to know. [Blind-Computing] problem with USB devices
Hi all, I just bought a USB extender cable. The USB ports on this computer I just bought are all located on the back of the computer, and they're hard to reach as my computer is set up, so I ordered an extender as well as a USB hub, which I'm still waiting for to arrive. Anyway, the problem is this: upon plugging the extender into the back of the computer, I cannot get any devices that I plug into it to recognize. I've tried both my external hard drives and my headset to no avail. A message flashes saying that the device installation has failed or something like that. I had no idea an extender cable could have drivers of its own to cause this sort of problem. So, is there anything I can do to fix this? I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium. Thank you for any help you can give me, I'm hoping to get this fixed before the hub arrives. For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/

Re: [Blind-Computing] problem with USB devices
Hi Desiree, If the extender cable is too long, you may find that the power generated by the USB port is not strong enough to travel along the length of the cable to the device. I'm afraid that you may have to get a powered hub, or powered device to plug into that cable, otherwise the cable on it's own will not have enough power to power what ever device you plug into it. I'm not exactly sure what you can do to fix this problem except to say that you will have to increase the power coming out of your USB port, or nothing will happen. I thought it might be like a WI-Fi connection, where you can connect repeaters to the network, thereby extending the reach of the Wi-Fi area, but again, I'm not sure what you will need to fix this problem. Sorry about that. Scorpio For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/
Re: [Blind-Computing] problem with USB devices
Hi, OK that makes sense. So a USB hub will not provide that power? I guess that was a dumb question since I'll be plugging probably 4 or so devices into the hub. Maybe I'll try to figure out a way to maneuver the way my computer is set up so I can have easier access to the ports. Thanks for your help. Re: [Blind-Computing] problem with USB devices
The maximum USB length is 3 meters or around 10 feet. This includes both the extender and the device cable. If you have any devices that might draw significant power, I would recommend a powered USB hub as well. *Don Marang* Vinux Software Development Coordinator - vinuxproject.org http://www.vinuxproject.org/ There is just so much stuff in the world that, to me, is devoid of any real substance, value, and content that I just try to make sure that I am working on things that matter. -- Dean Kamen On 5/26/2011 1:18 PM, Scorpio Forever wrote: Hi Desiree, If the extender cable is too long, you may find that the power generated by the USB port is not strong enough to travel along the length of the cable to the device. Re: [Blind-Computing] problem with USB devices
Hi Desiree, Yeah some extender cables need to be installed before they're able to function properly. I would plug the extender and wait for the new device ditection prompt to pop up then would follow the prompts. They are very easy to be installed as Windows would recognize their drivers automatically... Hope that helps Hamid AITOUZNAG We never value what we have until we lose it! Re: [Blind-Computing] using Firefox
Don't be confused by the term safe mode. In Firefox, this simply means running it wit all add-ons disabled. So unless you are trying to troubleshoot a particular problem with Firefox, you should always run it in regular mode. Re: [Blind-Computing] I need help with outlook express please:
Ok, that's generally a connection/configuration issue, and those settings, which you can generally find using tools menu, hitting up arrow and then hitting enter on account options, selecting an account from list, and hitting alt + P for properties, and then ctrl + tab to servers page would most likely be relevant, but the actual settings you want to change there would generally be specific to your internet service provider FWIW. Also, if you hit space bar on the details button, you might get more information when then tabbing around that error dialogue.
