[Blind-Computing] Monitor is on, but no picture

2012-01-03 Thread Alan Dicey

Dear David,
Well, a slight light comes on the monitor screen after I boot up the
computer, but it is not enough to recognize anything.
When I hold the JAWS key and the number 5 on the number row, it does tell me
what colors have printed on doc files and such.

To be honest, I really do not know where I can take it to test the monitor.
I thought perhaps something got messed up in my Display Settings, and
although I am not that familiar with all which is in that, as I tab through,
I saw nothing I thought was not correct or needed changing.

Thanks so much David.

Does anything at all come up on the screen during any part of the boot up
cycle? Also not to sound like a broken record but make certain that all
cables are connected properly. It might even be possible that your video
card has gone bad. Definitely try testing that monitor on another system
such as take it to a friend's house if you have to and see if it works at
that point.

You need to verify that it is the monitor or the card before you make any
other decision.

No, this Dell is the only computer I have.

Dear Friends,
I have no idea what happened, but there is no picture on my Monitor.
It is turned on, and gets warm like usual, my JAWS reads whatever program
I
go to just fine, but I have no picture.

I am using XP-Home, JAWS 11, and I have a Dell System Model OptiPlex
745.

All the cables and wires seem connected just fine, and as I said, the
monitor even has the little signal lights on by all the buttons, of which
there is only 1 I know what is for, the off / on button, which I never
touch.

But turning this button off and on just gives me the sound signal that it
always did.

Anyone have any ideas?

If the monitor did not get warm like it always did, I would think it
burned
out, but as I said it does and so have no clue.
I can use the computer, but some times I need my better half to look at
things for me or she uses my computer to do things, so need a monitor
that

one can see!
I appreciate any thoughts.

Re: [Blind-Computing] need recomendation for a good pc sharing program

2012-01-03 Thread TJ McElroy gMail

Hello Melissa,

Depending on the files that you want to copy there should be no problem
copying the files from one windows computer to another.

If the files are of a specific kind of file, Microsoft word 2007 or Excel
2007 and you are copying them to a computer that only has Microsoft word
2003, you might have to download an update to allow the older version of
word to read the newer version, but other than version issues there should
be no problem copying from one computer to another.

You can just copy the files to a USB drive and transfer the files that way
or if this will be a routine procedure it might be worth getting a router

[Blind-Computing] Another excel question

2012-01-03 Thread Cliff Smales
I was filling in a spreadsheet for Bingo, yesterday, and a strange thing
happened.

I should explain, first, that my spreadsheet covers money dispensed during
bingo, plus other related factors.

I added a new column, Number Of Games.

I had Six dollars left in the bank, which I notated.

The number of games played was 6. When I wrote in the 6, It came up as six
dollars, responding to the entry of the same listing in another column.

How do I change that second six dollars into a just plain six, which sites the
number of games played?

Hi Folks,

Does anyone know if NVDA has a version of the Jaws cursor, and if so, how does

I don't imagine that the keystrokes are the same as the ones for activating and

To my knowledge, NVDA has no equivalent to the JAWS cursor. But you can
access hidden objects with a series of NVDA commands. To learn more about
object navigation in NVDA, refer to sections 6.4 and 6.5 of the NVDA User
Guide, the link for which can be found on the NVDA Help menu. Or perhaps
you should consider joining the NVDA Support list whose members may be more
knowledgeable about this subject than I am. To subscribe, visit the

Like other person said, you can use object navigation to move around object
hierarchy, using things like NVDA key and some numpad keys, or if you use
the physical mouse, it will more often report objects/items under the real
mouse cursor than jaws would as such.

I was filling in a spreadsheet for Bingo, yesterday, and a strange thing
happened.

I should explain, first, that my spreadsheet covers money dispensed
during bingo, plus other related factors.

I added a new column, Number Of Games.

I had Six dollars left in the bank, which I notated.

The number of games played was 6. When I wrote in the 6, It came up as
six dollars, responding to the entry of the same listing in another
column.

How do I change that second six dollars into a just plain six, which
sites the number of games played?

[Blind-Computing] emails taking awhile to read in my NVDA folder

2012-01-03 Thread Rosemarie Chavarria
Hi, everyone,

When I go to the NVDA folder to read my emails it takes awhile for the messages
to come up. I can hit enter on all other list folder emails and the messages
come up right away. What could be happening? I’ve done everything from
maximizing the folder to restarting NVDA. Is it possible that the folder could
be corrupted?

Any help will be very much appreciated.

Many thanks in advance.

Hi, Steve,

Do you have outlook express set to plain text? That could be why you can't
click on a link in an email.

You should try insert with f7.
That usually does it for me.

Hello friends, each time I press enter on a link in Outlook Express
nothing happens. I have read in plain text unchecked and still can't
achieve this. The last time it happened, a few weekks ago, I re-installed
IE and the problem was solved. Not sure what I can do instead of
re-installing IE. Thanks.

[Blind-Computing] Win 8 OS and Grade 3 braille

2012-01-03 Thread Silpa Mallipeddi
Hi All:

1. I would like to know if anybody on the list has used Win 8 OS.
If so, I would like to know the differences between Win 7 and Win 8 OOSs.

2. I heard that grade 3 braille exists.
But not sure who and where people are using it.
I would like to know grade 3 braille in text format.

Thanks and regards,
Silpa.

Hi, Maria,

Hadley no longer teaches grade 3 braille. I think you can still get a book
from American Printing House for the Blind. I have it and it's qquite good.
I also have the Key to Grade 3 which is also very good.
