I am using Jaws 12 and Windows XP at work.

I have for different USB connections constantly, and occasionally I have
to unplug and attach another.

I looked on Amazon at hubs and got a headache.

What should I be looking for?

I am plugging in two printers, a second keyboard, a harddrive backup and
so on.

1. Outlook is included in Office 2003 Standard and Pro.
2. As far as I have been able to find, Office 2003 is the minimum that is
officially supported on Win 7. Office XP can be installed, but has
reported issues with no work-around.
3. As far as I know, it can only be installed on one computer. But, once
I open the package, I will have my wife read the license to verify that
fact. If I recall, some MS products do allow you to install on more than
one computer, as long as not more than one of the copies is being used
concurrently. Not a problem for me, as I will only have one computer
running Win 7. Next new computer is going to be a Mac.

Couple of questions. Does this include Outlook as well? Is
this the minimum Office that will work on Window's 7? How
many computes can you install it on with the serial # they

Hi,
I completely agree with you. I just purchased a
shrink-wrapped copy of
Office 2003 for $50, which included shipping. I have not
installed it yet,
but I am in the process of upgrading my main computer from
XP to Win 7. I
currently use Office XP, which still serves me fine, but
there are some
issues with it running on Win 7. For what I do with Office,
2003 will be
just fine. There are tons of them available on eBay, but I
am always leery
of getting bootleg stuff. The seller I bought from had 100%
positive
feedback, which I always look for. It also said that it was
a shrink-wrap
package and in fact it was. I still haven't broken the seal
on the package.
I setup my main computer to dual boot XP and Win 7.
Unfortunately, I
haven't had much time to get everything installed on Win 7,
as I am always
working on other peoples computers.

Good luck,
John

Hi Yvonne;

When you type, shift + 3, does Jaws say pound or number? The reason I ask
is because, I switched my keyboard settings to UK English in, Regional and
Language Options, in the control panel. After doing so, when I pressed
shift + 3, Jaws still said, number. Also, I apologize if I appeared to be
contradicting you about this pound / pounds keystroke thing. I wasn't
contradicting you, I was merely giving other options. Especially when
British currency never crossed my mind, as I stated earlier in this
thread.

Take care.

In order to get the, £ , sign using the number pad, you have to hold down

[Blind-Computing] Getting my Outlook component to work

2011-02-02 Thread Francis E. Khan
I am using Office 2003 which works well for me for the time being. A friend
was trying to configure Ms Outlook to set up an e-mail account but for some
reason I can't access the microsoft exchange server. All I hear is to retry
but nothing happens.

Can I undo his handiwork so that I can get my outlook to work? The alternative
is to reinstall the Office 2003 program and try again. Any suggestions?

[Blind-Computing] Looking to purchase a Mr. Coffee Junior coffee maker

2010-12-28 Thread Francis E. Khan
Hello all:

Sorry for my first attempt at sending this message and am now resending it with
my request.

I hope someone on this list can help me. My coffee maker has died after ten
years of excellent service and I need to purchase a new one. Does anyone know
an internet site where I can purchase the same type of Coffee Maker?

The last time I logged on to Amazon I was not able to find what I wanted except
for the paper filters that go with the product.

Daily Tip:
Large Charge

No one is really satisfied with the state of rechargeable batteries these
days. Laptops have grown so powerful that you may not be able to watch a
whole DVD movie before the battery quits. And expensive battery packs can
wear out in as little as a year, depending on usage patterns. If you're
faced with buying a replacement, and you're willing to accept some extra
weight, bulk, and cost, look into the availability of an extended battery
pack for your model of notebook. An extended battery has more cells and
can provide significantly longer charge life.

I use the computer version of facebook. However, many people say that the
mobile version is more accessible "m.facebook.com". I enjoy using the
computer version of facebook because it allows me to chat directly from
the application without using a third party application. A couple of
emails that I have saved regarding facebook did not contain a tutorial,

See, this would be fine, except I use MP3 format with the default
attributes. My podcast on Cobra is over 23 MB in size. Not bad but like
you said you may be put off with it because of the size. I am exactly to
the point. I even edited the bit where I couldn't get Cobra to launch at
first (you will not get that in the podcast I uploaded), but I'm just
saying I try to make it short and to the point. But easy said than done
for a podcast. I may have to end up doing several NVDA podcasts.

Just a thought here,
If you are going to do a podcast, take it to a better

Keep the file to a small bit rate, remember we are talking about a
monologue here, not a concert.
And editing is very helpful to remove extraneous material that is not
relevant to the topic being discussed.
The only reason I bring this up, is that long-winded podcasts reaching
into the 20 to 100mb range are unnecessary,
and I have seen plenty of them over there.
Just my opinion,

Keep It Cool

Computers generate quite a bit of internal heat, especially if they
are running video or audio applications or multiple programs
simultaneously. Excess heat over prolonged periods of time can
damage components and connections, not to mention affect
performance. All computers are equipped with fans that dissipate
the heat, but sometimes they can't keep up, especially if the vents
are blocked or occluded by dirt and dust. In addition to keeping
the vents clear, you can keep your computer cool and healthy by
keeping the room temperature lower and making sure air can
circulate around your computer.

Firstly, who will be building the machine? You, or a family member, or a
computer store? I'm asking because prices will range significantly
depending

on who is building the machine.

What is it that you're doing? no need to build a powerhouse of a computer
if

you will only be using NotePad and casually browsing the internet.

Why is Windows7 Pro a necessity? the Jaws license will cost you about $300
more than regular license. Window eyes license will not demand this
outrageous additional cost.

A 64-bit machine will allow for more ram to be used--up to 24 gigs. A
32-bit

version of Windows 7 will only allow for 4 gigs of ram max. If you will be
processing large audio or video files as is the case with a media center
PC

then you will want Windows 64-bit.

If you want a good high-end sound card then expect to pay an additional
$150+--at the very least. My motherboard came with an 8-channel sound card
that seems to be doing the job for me. I use it with a 2.1 speaker system
and it sounds great.

You can install Office 2003 on your Windows 7 machine without a problem.

Motherboards vary in cost from under $100 to $350+.

You may also need to buy a new processor that will run with your current
motherboard.

A TV tuner card will cost you about $90+ for a good one. You can buy a
remote control for about $15.

If all this is a mystery to you then plan on spending the next couple of
weeks doing your research, or get an experienced person to help you build
the computer. In all honesty, unless that friend or family member is
willing

to be your go to tech support, you should buy an already assembled off the
shelf Home Theatre PC.

for what you want, I'm thinking you will probably be spending about $1000
for a low-end machine or up to $1700 for a nice almost top of the line
home-built machine. An equivalent machine from Dell will cost you about
$2400 to $3200 respectively.

If I were you I'd jump on the newegg.com or amazon.com and look around
because its black Friday today and there's lots of good deals on these
items.

I have been advised to get a new computer to help me do what I am doing
and

wonder whether it would be better to build a machine instead of purchasing
one from the brands that are now available. This is what I want.

My computer should be equipped with Windows 7 professional and I am told
that it should be a 64-bit setup. What is the difference between a 32-bit
and 64-bit machine and what are the advantages of having either one. It
should also have at least 4 GB of RAM and a fast enough processor. It
should be equipped with a good sound card that can show up the music that
I

am listening to but I have no idea of choosing a sound card.

At this point in time I am using Office 2003 professional which I can use
pretty good but my nephew has sent me Office 2007 and I don't know
anything

about using the ribbon menus. What about the motherboard which I should
purchase to get the best out of the package. One other thing: I have
been

told that some software is not available for 64-bit computers. The last
thing I need to have is a TV card so that I can listen to programmes on
television.

I hope my message makes some sense and I look forward to all the advice
you

can give.

[Blind-Computing] Advice on getting a new computer

2010-11-26 Thread Francis E. Khan
I have been advised to get a new computer to help me do what I am doing and
wonder whether it would be better to build a machine instead of purchasing one
from the brands that are now available. This is what I want.

My computer should be equipped with Windows 7 professional and I am told that
it should be a 64-bit setup. What is the difference between a 32-bit and
64-bit machine and what are the advantages of having either one. It should
also have at least 4 GB of RAM and a fast enough processor. It should be
equipped with a good sound card that can show up the music that I am listening
to but I have no idea of choosing a sound card.

At this point in time I am using Office 2003 professional which I can use
pretty good but my nephew has sent me Office 2007 and I don't know anything
about using the ribbon menus. What about the motherboard which I should
purchase to get the best out of the package. One other thing: I have been
told that some software is not available for 64-bit computers. The last thing
I need to have is a TV card so that I can listen to programmes on television.

I hope my message makes some sense and I look forward to all the advice you can
give.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Setting volume when listening to programs ontheInternet

2010-11-20 Thread Francis E. Khan

Hi Mike and Barbara:

I did what you suggested and it worked! The up down setting has been
adjusted to 75% and when I went to the sacred site at FBC and Classical King
FM in Seattle to listen to classic music, both sites sounded a lot beteter.
The stereo is great and I can hear the music a lot better and the choral
items are sounding a lot better.

Hi Francis;

I think you have used all your options but, 1 thing you could try is to
turn

the volume level on the up down slider down to around 75 or 80% and see if
that helps. You will have to turn the volume control on your speaker knob
a

little more but, it might keep it from blowing you out of the chair.
Take care.

The volume on my computer is set using the volume control on the control

listen to BBC radio programs or perhaps sacred music from FDC radio, it is
necessary for me to increase the volume so that I can hear what is being

it is deafening.

Is there another type of setting to adjust the volume for listening to

In the control panel I have set the up down setting to 100 per cent and

here's what let's do.
1) Go to control panel, display, then control tab to 'desktop page'.
2) Tab to the 'customize desktop' button & activate it w/enter/spacebar.
3) Check the 'my documents' button, then down arrow to 'my computer' &
'network places' & check those as well.

Hi Francis;

Here is a tip for when you run / install the pico-0.1.exe file. I tried
running it from where I had saved it from the download and not all of the
folders installed in the right place so, therefore the new synthesizer
didn't show up in the list of synthesizers in NVDA. I did this using 2
computers running XPSP3 Home

Here is how I got everything to work correctly;

1. After downloading / saving the the pico-0.1.exe file, I went to where
it

was saved & cut it from that folder.
2. Now, paste it into the
synthDrivers folder. This folder canbe be found in Local Disk C /
Documents& Settings / YourName or Owner folder / applications / NVDA /
synthDrivers.
3. With the file / program pasted into the synthDrivers folder, run the
program.
4. You should now be able to select it from the synthesizer list, combo
box

found in preferences / synthesizer in the NVDA program.

Hope this helps. Take care.
Mike

Francis,
I think that I can straighten this out a little. Jaws Professional will
work on any Windows 7 version.
I believe that there's a really limited version called Windows 7 Home but
I've never worked with it.
The more popular versions are below.
Windows 7 Home Premium,
Windows 7 Professional,
Windows 7 Ultimate:

There's another step between Professional and Ultimate but I can't
remember

what it's called.
Those higher functioning versions run a lot of money. Steve was right
though. You can get an upgrade package which will take you from Windows
XP
to Windows 7 Home Premium. The price may vary depending on your
particular

locale and on promotional considerations.

If you can afford it, Windows 7 Ultimate is an amazing piece of software.
I'm using Professional, myself.
If you'd like to learn more about what the differences mean, there's a
Windows 7 for Blind Users group.
The link for that group is below.
It's run by a man called Rick who is intelligent and knowledgeable but
he

doesn't have David's personality.
(grins)
Anyway, they are pretty sticky about things staying on topic over there,
namely Windows 7. It isn't our Rick that runs that group. I can't think
of

his last name but he has a site called BLIND-GEEK-ZONE.NET. Here's that
link I promised you.

http://www.blindwindows7-j...@yahoogroups.com

As I'm sure you are already aware, beware of Yahoo and its numerous odd
behaviors.

Good luck, Francis. I think you'll like Windows 7. I know I do.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Blind Cooltech podcasts

2010-08-13 Thread Francis E. Khan
Yes, I do want to monitor these feeds and will certainly follow your advice.
For the time being, I have about 15 feeds on my Internet program and
whenever I see something that is interesting, I check it out.

On the Blindcooltech feeds I am looking at recordings made by a gentleman
who is on the Bookport Plus mailing list as I hope to hone my skills in
recording items of interest.

If you want to keep track of podcasts on this feed as they are created,
you will want to subscribe to this feed. There are many separate programs
that do this. I prefer to watch feeds in Internet Explorer 8. Here are
some basics.

Often when browsing the web, JAWS will announce when it finishes loading
that there is a feed and so many links on the page. If it says there are
feeds available, pressing Alt + J will bring up a context menu near the
address bar listing the various feeds available on that page. News sites
always have such feeds available. It is also possible to use the Search
for feeds menu item in the Tools menu.

Once an XML RSS feed is being viewed, if you are interested in getting
updates from that site or listen regurarily to their podcasts, subscribe
to the feed. Most feed pages have a plus sign near the top of the page
that will subscribe you to that feed by pressing Enter on the link. I
finsd some sites, especially feedburner pages might not be in the right
format for to subscribe in IE. If you select the Subscribe to this
feed... menu item in the Tools menu. this seems to geyt put into the
correct format for IE. When you subscribe to a feed, it gets added to
your feed list. This is much like the favorites list. In fact, it is
handled from the same area on the toolbars.

To go to your feeds list, press Control + J. It will present a tree view
of your feeds. It is possible to place them in groups, much like
favorites. If the site has added items or articles to the feed since the
last time you viewed the page, a "- new" will be announced after the feed
name in the list. Press Enter to view the latest items in the feed. It
will only show the new items. It keeps track of what you have viewed
before.

The very last link at the bottom of every feed page is a link for
Properties. Hitting Enter here will bring up a dialog. These properties
let you select if you want IE to automatically download attached files,
which are also commonally called podcasts. You might also want to sabe
space on your hard disk by adjusting the number to be archived. For
weekly podcasts, reducing the default from 200 to 4 will still retain a
copy for a month.

I normally copy podcasts I am interested in to a podcaasts folder which I
use a couple of times a week to copy to my Victor Reader for relaxed
speeded up listening. To copy to this podcast folder, I use the
previously mentioned keystrokes. Press Insert + NumPad Minus (-),
followed by Numpad Star (*)., and select "Save target...". Sorry, I have
no idea what the laptop keystrokes would be.

I think that might cover the verry basics of RSS feeds. By the way, RSS
stands for Really Simple Syndication. It is a technology to allow the
viewer, like IE to check every so often for new materieral from a website
and download it automatically. The default frequency can be set to once a
day or every 15 minutes, depending on your needs. This is set on the
content page of the Internet Options dialog.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Do I need to change from Skype 3.8

2010-07-31 Thread Francis E. Khan
I have been using Skype for since about 2002 and it was only on Sunday last
that I changed from 3.8 to Skype 4.2. Google have been asking people to
upgrade to the later versions of Skype but I don't know how long Version 3.8
will remain as it is. I know that scripts for this version might not be
upgraded.

The Skype 4.2 works well and the audio is fantastic. However, scripts for
the newer versions are upgraded frequently and there is also a program
called Skype Talking which alerts users to people who are online or those
who have left and several other things which I can't remember.

Now that I have upgraded to Skype 4X - there is a beta version of Skype 5) I
am learning how to use all the new features and over time - a couple of
weeks - everything will grow on you.

I hope this e-mail will help.

Dear Friends,
I have been using Skype 3.8 for a year and a half and very successfully,
just perfect!

Yesterday, I received a message when on Skype that it wanted to download a
current version, I clicked "No" or "Cancel Download" I think both LOL!
Anyway, today, a friend said that she heard Skype was going to not allow
Skype 3.8 from being used any longer!
This would be very bad for me, as I hate to change programs that are
working Perfect, as Perfect is good enough.

Has anyone heard this "rumor" which I must call it now?

Thanks for any comments on using Skype 3.8.

When you're on some email you want to save just go to the file menu in OE

Re: [Blind-Computing] Windows XP Service Pack 3

2010-07-27 Thread Francis E. Khan
There is something I need to ask you. On a number of occasions when my
system has to be repaired, I often lose my e-mails and it takes a while to
get everything setup again.

I believe that there is a way that e-mails can be stored in some other part
of the computer or elsewhere. Do you know anything about exporting e-mails
to some other place and retrieve them later? If I could do that, I can keep
my hair almost black, although there are several patches of grey which seem
to thrive better than the rest.

You can go into the Start menu. Once there, find 'My Computer". Hit your
Applications key. Look for either "Send To" submenu or show on desktop.

If you see the Send to submenu, Enter on that. in that list, there is a
selection called, "Send ot Desktop." Hit Enter on this. then it's on our
desktop. Hope this helps! Wayne Scott

Re: [Blind-Computing] Messages deleted from the "sent items" folder

2010-07-14 Thread Francis E. Khan
McAfee is quite a good piece of software and I have been using it for more
than ten years. At this point, I have opted to access their subscription
plan and I renew it every year. If anything doesn't work on the system I
can use the DM setup and redownload the software so that I get a clean and
usually a better version than the one before.

You need to use the Jaws cursor to access the components and you have the
option to adjust how you wish to clean files and what you want to do.

You might wish to go to the McAfee site to determine whether you need to
install the McAfee suite or opt for the subscription package which costs
somewhere in the region of USD 39.00.

From the property sheet that appears, press control+Tab and switch to
the "Send" page.
Here tab once you wil find a field labelled "Keep a copy of sent items
in my 'sent' folder": make sure it is checked.
Once you check this one, click okay. your problem will disappear once

Re: [Blind-Computing] Converting plain text files to DAISY files

2010-05-25 Thread Francis E. Khan

Hello TJ:

Thanks for the comprehensive instructions for getting the files from
Sourceforge.net. I will attend to this as soon as I have read my e-mails
and paid some bills.

Hello Francis,

Sorry it took so long to get an answer to your question.

I was also interested in converting text to Daisy and here is a free and
quite easy to do just that.

It will require three downloads:
1. Open Office portable
2. Open XML to DAISY
3. Open XML to DAISY manual

I am using the portable version of Open Office because I was unhappy how
the normal install version slowed down my computer.
The conversion still works with the portable version and you have the
added bonus of being to save every thing on a USB drive.

You can read the manual for the step by step, but
in a nut shell here is what to do.

1. install Open Office
2. unzip the Open XML to DAISY plug in.
3. Start open office
4. navigate to the Tools > Extension Manager >
5 Add > Odt2DaisyAddOn.oxt ( located in the file that you unzipped
earlier )

6. Restart Open Office

Once you restart Open Office there will be an export to Daisy option
under the files menu.
When that option is selected, it will prompt for a file name, then a
screen will appear telling you of the data that will be stored in the
Daisy document.

you will have to choose ok from this screen.
Ok and cancel are located at the bottom of the screen
This screen does not speak for me, maybe it will for you.

The first Daisy book conversion might give a message that the Daisy
Pipeline was not found. This message has only appeared once for me. A
light version of the Daisy Pipeline is part of what you added to Open
Office.

After the conversion you will have three folders under the filename that
you choose to save the Daisy document as.

An audio book
a Daisy book
a z3986

I do not know what the z3986 is, if you find out let me know.

I have given the download urls below:

drives

Subject: [Blind-Computing] Converting plain text files to DAISY files

I purchased the Bookport Plus player/recorder from the American Printing
House for the Blind in March this year and downloaded approximately 129
books from Gutenberg.org. What I want to do is to change these books from
plain text to a DAISY format so that I can listen to them on the Bookport
Plus.

Does anybody on this list have any expertise in doing this conversion and
is it an expensive venture? I tried setting the pitch to minus 5 and the
resulting playback sounded very gravelly like a famous jazz trumpeter by
the name of Louis Armstrong also known as Sachmo. Any help would be
greatly appreciated.

Hi everyone

Whenever I open IE8 I get a message saying that my last

browser session

closed unexpectedly and would I like to return to it or go

to home page.

It's been happening for about a week now. I have tried a

reset but

nothing's changed. Any ideas?

Thanks in anticipation.

Kind regards
