[Blind-Computing] windows defender

2013-05-30 Thread Becky Buckner
Hello all.
I would like to use Windows Defender. I'm told that it is not turned on in my
computer, but when I tab to the link to turn it on, I get an error message that
says access denied. Is there a secret to turning this on?

If you are using Microsoft Security Essentials Windows Defender can't be
used as well.

Microsoft Essentials has an equivalent included with it?

Thanks.

How to Schedule Automatic Spyware Scans in Windows Defender

By Dan Gookin

If your PC is rapidly slowing down, moving so slow that you have to wait for
minutes to see what you have typed on the screen, you may have spyware on
your computer.
One of the best ways to fight spyware is to use the Windows Defender
program.

To quickly locate Windows Defender,
type Windows Defender into the search text box at the bottom of the Start
menu.
You should see the Windows Defender icon appear in the search results.

If it's not there, download the program from the Microsoft website.
It is free as long as you are running Windows.

Windows Defender not only scans your system for spyware but can also help
you remove stubborn piggyback programs.

Start Windows Defender by choosing the Windows Defender item from the Start
button menu's All Programs menu.
You see the Windows Defender main screen.

To schedule when and how Windows Defender runs, follow these steps:

Click the Tools link at the top of the Windows Defender window.
The Tools and Settings part of the Windows Defender window appears.
It lists many powerful utilities for helping pluck nasty software from your
PC.

Choose the Options link.
The Options page appears.
Ensure that there's a check mark by the item Automatically Scan My Computer.
When this option is unchecked, Windows Defender is turned off and you don't
want Windows Defender turned off.

Choose a frequency, either daily or a specific day of the week.
Daily is best.

Pick a time.
Specify a time when the computer will be on (either running or in Sleep
mode).
Windows Defender doesn't awaken the computer from hibernation.

Choose the type of scan, either Quick or Full.

Review other settings in the window.
There are too many to list here, and none is incorrectly set by default.
Click the Save button.

In Windows Vista, you will need to type the administrator's password or
click the Continue button.

A key to the success of running any malware utility is to keep it updated.
Windows Defender is no exception.
Updates for Windows Defender are automatically installed on your computer -
if you have Automatic Updates configured that way.
If you don't, you might want to reconsider your automatic update strategy.

end of article.

Hi
First, go to control panel, and open windows defender. Then tab to
options. Next, down arrow to advanced. Next, tab to the setting that asks if
you want to use this program. This may not be the exact wording, but it is
close. Anyway, uncheck that item and tab to the OK box. When you press enter
you should see a message explaining that defender is turned off and that you
can click here to turn it on. Do an alt f4 and you are done.
 I hope this helps.

[Blind-Computing] windows defender vs super antispyware

2010-10-14 Thread Lenny McHugh
Which is better to use? I am using windows 7 32 bit. In the action center it is
reported that both are running. I thought that I had windows defender turned
off, now not sure how to accomplish that.
A while back windows defender removed part of super anti spyware. Also the
action center warns about running two antispyware programs at the same time. I
do like the way that super antispyware can protect my home page from being
changed by a web site.

Hi Marilyn,

I think that you should give Windows Defender a chance. I have it set
up to run automatically 11 A.M. and this morning it deleted a couple
of unknown in the registry. I can also do a quick scan and a full scan.

Also, Windows Defender, I think, don't scan cookies like Super-Antispyware
and
Ad-aware does. By the way, I also use Super Anti-spyware, but like
Spybot Search and Destroy, it takes about on my computer 26 minutes
for a quick scan.

I am not a computer genius, but if I can be of any help, I will try
to do my best to help you. I find Windows Defender quite accessible with
Jaws.

Rick, can you help Marilyn too?

Thanks,

Marilyn,

To turn off resident in Spybot, do the following:

1. Go to the system tray
2. hit enter on Spybot to open it
3. Arrow down until you find Exit Spybot - SD resident and hit enter

I have not notice any performance problems. However, I need to go
into Spybot help and figure out what is going on.

Lisa, do you have Spybot SD resident on? If so, what are your
experience with it?

Marilyn, I do believe that you won't find any help with F1 for
scripts. I can sometime find some help of the scripts that I have
installed by going to the program sub menu under the start menu and
the scripts might have a ReadMe or help there to give you the
information that you are looking for.

For example, I have Spybot Script there and one of the sub menu is
Spybot Script Help.

Hope this helps,

Lennie

Also, Windows Defender, I think, don't scan cookies like Super-Antispyware and

Re: [Blind-Computing] WINDOWS DEFENDER

2008-02-26 Thread Lisa
Hello everyone,
I'm seriously considering giving windows defender a try. I now have AVG
free set to scan my computer at 5 AM, and I would probably set windows
defender to scan at 2 AM. What I'm wondering is if for some reason I don't
leave my computer on all night and I turn it on in the morning will AVG free
and windows defender play nice together and both programs do there
individual scans, or will I have a big problem? Also will windows defender
scan my external hard drive? Sorry for so many questions, but your help
with this is very much appreciated!
Take care,
Lisa

Re: [Blind-Computing] WINDOWS DEFENDER

2008-02-25 Thread Lisa
Hello everyone,
I have windows XP home adition so I was wondering if I could use windows
defender, or is it just for windows vista? Also my computer is about 4
years old so I would like to know what requirements are needed to run
windows defender? That is if I can even use it with XP. I wouldn't want to
use anything that is a ram hog because my computer only came with 256 megs
of ram, but I have added another 512 megs of ram. That seamed to help out
quite a bit. Does windows defender only scan for spy-ware? Any help with
this will be greatly appreciated!
Take care,

I'm ridding my computer of windows defender because it appears to be a work
in progress and is difficult to deal with. I far prefer the
superantispyware pro that I installed awhile back. You can set it to
manually scan quicktime or full scan or custom scan on any schedule you
like. It is accessible and runs in the system try. It has been picking up
three or four things a day which go into the quarantine folder where they
reside until you decide to remove them or leave them there.  Just a thought;

You have your choice of either a manual or scheduled scan. Even if your
scans are scheduled you can still force a scan at any time. I have Defender
scheduled to do a full scan every morning at 2:00 AM and then check the
history from time to time to see what has been caught.

Take care,

You should be good to go with Windows XP Home and the amount of RAM you
 now
have installed. Yes, Defender is just for spy-ware, ad-ware, etc. It is
 not
 an anti-virus program.

 Hope this helps,

Re: [Blind-Computing] WINDOWS DEFENDER

2008-02-24 Thread Lennie Rinaldi
Marilyn,

Yes, I am able to enter on the history and tools buttons. I found
that when you hit the spacebar on either button, you have to tab
around to get to the various entries under history and tools. It does
not open up (how can I explain this?) a dialog box that you can arrow
through. I admit that this method that Windows Defender uses is a bit
confusing. I hope that I explain it clearly.

2008-02-23 Thread Lennie Rinaldi
Hi Marilyn,

I followed Martina instructions and I now have Windows Defender in
the system tray. I also set up automatic scan at 11 A.M. daily. I am
able to navigate the program with the PC cursor, however, I found
information on the screen with the Jaws cursor while I am using the program.

I am also able to go into the various buttons without any problems. I
am using the latest version of Jaws 9. Are you still having any
problems using Windows Defender? I am anxiously waiting for Rick's
reply for this topic. I hope that he can shed some more light on this program.

Thanks,

Lennie

Rick,

Thanks for taking the time to check out Windows Defender. Let me know
when you write up the instructions for this program. I am still not
sure if it is running in the background.

Thanks for your hard work,

Lennie

At 08:26 PM 2/21/2008, you wrote:
I have looked at the program a little more,
enough to determine, from my point of view at least, that
it is not the most accessible with Jaws.
However, after testing it with Jaws 6.2, and being quite dis-satisfied,
I switched to Jaws8.0, and found that there is a way to actually make
changes to the program.
Additionally, I found that there is a setting that needs to be made in order
for the program to show in the system tray,
and I was able to determine that even if you close the program with ALT F4,
the program still runs in the background.
This was evidenced by the executable showing in the list of running
processes in the Windows Task Manager.
In order to make certain changes in the program, it is necessary to use the
Jaws cursor.
I will write up some instructions on this, but it will be some time,
because I have other projects in the works, as well as other
responsibilities.
In the meantime, I will try to answer any questions for anyone that needs
them.

Also, I tried control tab and that got me to some other things such as a

Hi!
I also tried Windows Defender now and I think I figured out how to set it so
that it would show up permanently in the system tray.
Well, there are various tabs in the program and in fact not much
JAWS-cursoring is necessary.

1. tab to tools and enter
2. then tab until you get to options and enter
3. there are various checkboxes and options to make various settings; tab
until you get to two radiobuttons; when JAWS-cursoring the text before the
buttons should read choose when the Windows Defender appears in the
notification area; on default it's set to only if Windows Defender detects
an action to take; so arrow down once to check always; then tab till you
get to save and enter and close the program by alt+F4.
After this change the program should be shown in the system tray and even
after the startup of the computer.

Well, that's it. Hope this helped.

Use Super Anti-spiware instead, its a great program. There's a free version
and a payed, pro version.

Re: [Blind-Computing] windows defender

2008-02-04 Thread Tony Hernandez
HI Allen. I'm running Windows defender and find it very acceptable with
regard to accessibility. During the actual scan, you need to use the JAWS
cursor or equivalent to read the progress , but it's accessible. There are
no irritating partially accessible parts of it, and no hastily
slapped-together or otherwise nonstandard controls that JAWS can't
recognize. It's worth your while to give it a try.

I've had it installed for about a year. Works good and no accessibility
issues. Plus, it's free!

[Blind-Computing] Windows defender vista and JAWS 82

2007-10-18 Thread torgersonenator
Hi
I am using JAWS 8.2 and vista home premium. What I wonder is how does one
access the windows defender program? I believe it may be interfering with other
programs I am trying to install or update. So, I would like to change the
program from actively defending my system to just occasionally scanning my
machine. Any ideas on how to do this is appreciated. I was unable to access the
options on the programs open screen even with the JAWS curser.

God bless,
Mark
God loves you!
