[BlindHandyMan] Clamping system
I am replacing the surface of my 12 by 16 deck with 16 foot long five quarter by 6 decking. I remember the last time I did this when getting to the last 3 to 4 foot of each board it would become necessary to pry the board over to have it remain tight with the previous one installed. This gets a bit tricky when you also have to drill a pilot hole and drive deck screws. Do they make any type expandable clamping system to assist with this type task? I'm envisioning something like a threaded rod with some type crank on one end that could draw the parts together? It would need to be expandable by adding say additional 4 foot sections as needed. If they do make something like this I would have many different type uses for it. Would something like this be available at Home Depot? What would it be called. Thanks in advance for all replies Al

Re: [BlindHandyMan] airconditioners
Alan, A ductless system is a great way to get something like central air in a house that does not have a forced air heating system. My house uses hot water radiators, so I do not have ducts already installed. To install a ducted system would be a very difficult retro-fit. A ductless system is much easier, because you only need to run small coolant lines rather than large ducts through the house. You could even run them on the outside of the house. So it is a much simpler retro-fit if you want AC in multiple rooms without having to use several window air conditioners. Also, since the compressor is separate from the chillers, it is much much quieter in the rooms than window air conditioners are. -- Blue skies. Dan Rossi Carnegie Mellon University. List guidelines. The topics that can be discussed on the Blind Handy Man list are as follows. Here is a direct quote from the beginning of every show, building repairing or maintaining, all designed with the blind in mind. That can be your house, car, or swimming pool ETC. No matter if it were how to do a job or what would be the correct tool to use for the task in question. We have people on here of all skill levels, from the beginner to those who build additions on their houses. So never hesitate to ask what ever you might need to know because most likely somebody on the list will be able to help you out. The only question that cant be answered is the one that is never asked. This isn't really a gardening list although questions about lawn maintenance such as mowing and that sort of thing are perfectly fine. Nor is it a technical list relating to software questions, but repairing your computer's hardware is certainly right on topic. [BlindHandyMan] down spout
Will one flexi elbow cover the same distance as two 90 degree bends? The way the down spout was put on my back porch was pretty stupid although it looked nice. From the gutter there is two 90 degree bends to put the down spout next to a support post. At the bottom there are two more 90 degree bends to take it over the wall. Even with a leaf guard the two top bends get really packed. I would like to bring the down spout straight down from the gutter then just use two flexi bends to get over the wall. --- Please visit my home page; it is motivational, inspirational and humorous with many resources for the blind. http://www.lennymchugh.com Lenny Please Copy and Paste into New Message to pass along. al, My ratchet strap was long enough for my purposes, but then again, my deck boards run at 45s from each side, so I had more options for attaching the strap and smaller distances to traverse. Re: [BlindHandyMan] Clamping system
My decking planks have about a quarter inch gap between each for air circulation. Unless you seal every join, I think that you are running a risk of them rotting as water can seep down between the planks and with them being so tightly packed together, there will be no chance of them drying out. Jewel - Original Message
Re: [BlindHandyMan] tread mill greese
Howdy Jim, First of all, I'd be very careful what you put between the belt and deck of your treadmill. You want to put only what the manufacturer suggests. On my Schwinn treadmill, they suggest only using a silicone product made for treadmills. I found that a simple silicone only product works very well. It's odd, as the silicone makes my deck as slick as an ice rink, but it doesn't affect the rollers at all. I think that's what you'll find as well. - Original Message - From: jim To: blindhandyman@yahoogroups.com Sent: Thursday, July 01, 2010 5:22 PM Subject: [BlindHandyMan] tread mill greese hi, i used to have a electric tread mill from sears. along withat treadmill came some grease to put under the belt. well i got rid of that one never having used the grease. so, now i have another one it was not new when i got it. and the belts getting kind of loud. i am wondering if i put the grease on the under side of the belt how will it keep turning with out slipping on the rollers that move it? thanks for any help someone might have that owns one. Jewel, You bring up an excellent point. With the type decking I'm using, over time the boards dry and contract leaving a small gap of an eighth to a quarter inch or better. If I start with a gap, eventually the gap will be too wide and could create some other issues Al -Original Message- From: blindhandyman@yahoogroups.com [mailto:blindhandy...@yahoogroups.com]on Behalf Of Jewel Sent: Thursday, July 01, 2010 6:25 PM To: blindhandyman@yahoogroups.com Subject: Re: [BlindHandyMan] Clamping system My decking planks have about a quarter inch gap between each for air circulation. Re: [BlindHandyMan] down spout
-- From: Lenny McHugh lmch...@verizon.net Will one flexi elbow cover the same distance as two 90 degree bends? The way the down spout was put on my back porch was pretty stupid although it looked nice. From the gutter there is two 90 degree bends to put the down spout next to a support post. At the bottom there are two more 90 degree bends to take it over the wall. Even with a leaf guard the two top bends get really packed. Are you sure these are 90º elbows? That would total to 180º and would have the effect of routing any water exactly back where it came from. I would like to bring the down spout straight down from the gutter then just use two flexi bends to get over the wall. I think if you bring the downspout directly down from the gutter you will be creating another problem in that that will not be a very robust assembly. The downspout was brought to that support post just for that reason -- support. I'm certain the downspout is secured to that post via some strapping because those fasteners holding the downspout to the gutter will really not be sufficient in stormy weather. One thing I did to minimize clogging in these sort of bends was to make sure that I used the shortest screws possible. These screws need to be at least long enough to catch the inside stock (the downspout/elbow joints) securely, but they need not extend into the tunnel where they can impede the passing of debris. Another thought is that, if you have aluminum or steel gutter material, is to use pop rivets. But I wouldn't recommend that technique on plastic or fiberglass material; I did that and it didn't do well. Holland's Person, Bill E-Mail: billgal...@centurytel.net - All men are frauds. Re: [BlindHandyMan] down spout
I found flexi that will work. The 4 90 degree bends are as follow. down and to the right, then another to make it down, a 5 foot down run, a 90 degree to the right and another 90 degree facing down. The first two bendsbring it under the over hang. The down run is secured to the roof support and the last two bends dump the water on top of a floor drain on the back pourch. - Original Message - From: Bill Gallik billgal...@centurytel.net To: blindhandyman@yahoogroups.com Sent: Thursday, July 01, 2010 8:46 PM Subject: Re: [BlindHandyMan] down spout -- From: Lenny McHugh lmch...@verizon.net Will one flexi elbow cover the same distance as two 90 degree bends? Re: [BlindHandyMan] Clamping system
When I built my deck, I used pressure treated deck boards. They were quite wet when I purchased them. I clamped the hell out of them when I attached them to the joists, to get them as tight together as possible. I now have gaps as much as a quarter inch along most of the planks. If using pressure treated lumber that isn't kiln dried, I would not leave any gaps when laying down the boards. -- Blue skies. Dan Rossi Carnegie Mellon University. Re: [BlindHandyMan] Clamping system
When I started building decks, I was told to use a 16 penny nail as a spacer between planks. That was a uniform size and as the planks dried out, it didn't leave too much of a gap. I took the nails and drove them through pieces of scrap wood so I didn't have to hold them while I was trying to line the planks up. The wood kept the nails from falling to the ground. - Original Message - From: Jewel To: blindhandyman@yahoogroups.com Sent: Thursday, July 01, 2010 6:25 PM Subject: Re: [BlindHandyMan] Clamping system My decking planks have about a quarter inch gap between each for air circulation.
