Re: [BlindHandyMan] talking thermometer or other solution.

Aloha Sheryl,
Given that the beans are inside a drum that can
be 400 degrees hotter than the actual beans, I
think that some device that will speak the
digital readout of the existing thermometers
would be the easiest way to go since those
thermometers are already installed in the big roaster.
I wonder if the manufacturer of the roaster could
be of any assistance in this quest.

[BlindHandyMan] Foaming drain cleaner

2010-09-07 Thread Betsy Whitney, Dolphin Press
Aloha all,
Our bathtub is running slow and my husband brought home a product
made by drano. It's a foaming product. The bottle looks very strange.
It is split into two parts but the mouth of the bottle is open to
both halves of the bottle so that when pouring it, the liquid will
mix together. I suspect that's when it will start foaming. The only
warning is to not use it in a toilet.
Anyone had any experience with this stuff?

Aloha Blake,
I think this is definitely a handyman question.
If I am sweeping in the house, I will often sweep
all the dust to a corner and then it is easier to
get down on the floor and, using a papertowel or
a cloth, you can push the dirt right into the
dust pan. When you're done, you can also use a
damp cloth to get the very fine dust that will probably still be there.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Buying a new Bed?

2010-08-06 Thread Betsy Whitney, Dolphin Press
Aloha Claudia,
You can purchase just a frame by itself. Some
metal frames have adjustable height. The legs are
kind of telescoping. The trick with those is to get them level.

Some of the wooden frames I have seen already
have holes that are supposed to be able to be used to connect to a headboard.

Haven't had an ice maker for many years, but I

Re: [BlindHandyMan] New Bed?

2010-07-14 Thread Betsy Whitney, Dolphin Press
I absolutely agree that my Tempur-Pedic is the
best purchase I ever made too. I also like the
fact that they are mold and mildew safe. I didn't
have to buy special sheets. We looked at the
number beds, but they didn't guarantee no mold or
mildew. The nice thing about this one is that it
conforms to your body and there's no need to
adjust it. Just get into bed and within about 15
seconds it molds to you. It also doesn't wiggle
when the other person gets in or out of bed, thus not waking others.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it. I do have
an old back injury and sleep is marvelous since the purchase.
Jusst another option,

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Considering building my own apple drier or dehydrator

2010-07-10 Thread Betsy Whitney, Dolphin Press
Speaking of using existing things, my friend that
I mentioned yesterday tells me that she has now
made a dryer out of the cupboard above her
refridgerator. She took out the bottom and the
top and replaced them with screen. For heat She
installed a light fixture inside to create heat
and the circulation from the refridgerator fan
creates the circulation to move the air. She's
been drying all sorts of things, but says that if
you're drying such things as apples you may have
to slice them thinner than you would for an actual dehydrator.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Considering building my own apple drier or dehydrator

2010-07-09 Thread Betsy Whitney, Dolphin Press
Aloha Matt,
My friend made trays with extruded aluminum just
like some folks use to make window screens. Then
she could just take them out in the yard and squirt them off with the hose.
She made a tent out of screen that was open on
the bottom so it could just be set over the whole
stack of trays. She used some sort of round metal
sticks to separate the stacked trays. I remember
that she had some sort of round stops on the
separation sticks, and the frames of the trays
had wholes for the separating sticks to fit into.
I'll try to reach her via email. She lives in
California now, but she used to dry apples,
pineapple, bananas, papaya, mango, parsley, and basil when she lived here.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] making a cat house

2010-06-29 Thread Betsy Whitney, Dolphin Press
Aloha Lenny,
Is this supposed to be a house for the cat to stay inside? I just
wonder because if it can get out, it will probably continue to
scratch it's favorite furniture anyway. I have found that having more
than one scratching post works well, and you put them in front of the
things you don't want them to scratch. A little catnip on the
scratching post gets their attention.
I also think a person has to be diligent about removing them from
things that are not appropriate to scratch. It takes some doing, but
it's worth it in the long run. Some of my friends have used a squirt
gun to shoot them when they are doing in appropriate scratching, but
my aim isn't that good.

Oh, and by the way. I believe that mold can grow

Re: [BlindHandyMan] calibrating oven

2010-06-10 Thread Betsy Whitney, Dolphin Press
Aloha Lenny,
Just a note about this. I complained that my oven was off. When the
guy came out, he said that after the oven light went out and the
preheated beeps sounded, I needed to wait until I heard the oven
performed two more cycles before it was actually at the right
temperature. He said that the preheat light goes out when the oven
hits the temperature that is set, but that the entire oven is not at
a steady temperature. Since I've been doing that, everything seems to
cook properly. We have one of those little round oven thermometers
that hangs on the rack. It is not accessible, but it was $4 and we
rarely have to use it.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] calibrating oven

2010-06-10 Thread Betsy Whitney, Dolphin Press
I think you can put the probe inside the oven
while it is heating. I have a meat thermometer
and you put the probe in the meat and there is a
cable that extends out of the oven to the talking
unit. I just press the button on the unit to hear
the temperature. No need to open the oven to check.

As for accuracy, we did a test with the talking
unit that we bought from Maxi Aids some time ago
and the little round one that we hang on the
rack. I suppose that is the spring type that you
mention, but don't know for sure, but I know it's
not digital. They both registered the same temp after about 11 minutes.

method successfully to remove tree pitch/sap from wood and tile.

[BlindHandyMan] Recall: Maytag Recalls Dishwashers Due to Fire Hazard

2010-06-03 Thread Betsy Whitney, Dolphin Press
There are so many of these units, I thought it best to send it along.

Maytag Recalls Dishwashers Due to Fire Hazard
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in
cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary
recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using
recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed. It is
illegal to resell or attempt to resell a recalled consumer product.
Name of Product: Dishwashers
Units: About 1.7 million in the United States
Manufacturer: Maytag Corp. of Newton, Iowa or Maytag Corp. of Benton
Harbor, Mich.
Hazard: An electrical failure in the dishwasher's heating element can
pose a serious fire hazard.
Incidents/Injuries: Maytag has received 12 reports of dishwasher
heating element failures that resulted in fires and dishwasher
damage, including one report of extensive kitchen damage from a fire.
No injuries have been reported.

Description: The recall includes Maytag(r), Amana(r), Jenn-Air(r),
Admiral(r), Magic Chef(r), Performa by Maytag(r) and Crosley(r) brand
dishwashers with plastic tubs and certain serial numbers. The
affected dishwashers were manufactured with black, bisque, white,
silver and stainless steel front panels.
The brand name is printed on the front of the dishwasher. The model
and serial numbers are printed on a label located inside the plastic
tub on a tag near the left side of the door opening. Serial numbers
will start or end with one of the following sequences.
SERIAL number STARTING with: NW39, NW40, NW41, NW42, NW43, NW44,

NJ, NL, NN, NP, NR

Sold at: Department and appliance stores and by homebuilders
nationwide from February 2006 through April 2010 for between $250 and $900.
Manufactured in: United States
Remedy: Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled
dishwashers, disconnect the electric supply by shutting off the fuse
or circuit breaker controlling it, inform all users of the dishwasher
about the risk of fire and contact Maytag to verify if their
dishwasher is included in the recall. If the dishwasher is included
in the recall, consumers can either schedule a free in-home repair or
receive a rebate following the purchase of certain new Maytag brand
stainless-steel tub dishwashers. The rebate is $150 if the consumer
purchases new dishwasher models MDB7759, MDB7609 or MDBH979; or $250
if the consumer purchases new
dishwasher models MDB8959, MDB8859, MDB7809 or MDB7709. Consumers
should not return the recalled dishwashers to the retailer where
purchased as retailers
are not prepared to take the units back.

Aloha Phil,
I did manage to find a users manual, but of
course there is no mention of how to solve your
issue. However, perhaps if you call:
* 866-674-3549 they can help you. They are in Arizona.
* I have the user manual in a txt or pdf file
that is quite readable with Acrobat, so if you
want it, I can send it off list.
* I wonder if because it has four alarms,
perhaps it only works with the 24 hour time.
* Good luck,

Re: [BlindHandyMan] How do I grab the archives

2010-05-13 Thread Betsy Whitney, Dolphin Press
Aloha Matt,
This may not be the fastest way to do this, but it will get you there.

Below this message is a link to the archives
page. I have moved through it in two ways.

You can type your query in the search box such as
airconditioner. This will bring up lots of items
including some from 2007 that didn't look like what you wanted.

Or, if you leave the sort by on Thread, it will
show you all of the different threads that have
been discussed. These appear to be in a List View
on my computer, so i used the letter l to move
from one list grouping to the next.
Once I find the list that I want, I open it and
then I can move from one message to the next
using the number 3 for Heading Level 3.
That's number 3, not F3.

I hope this helps.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] gloves

2010-05-11 Thread Betsy Whitney, Dolphin Press
Aloha Jennifer,
As someone else mentioned, it depends on what I'm
trying to protect myself from, but I did buy a
box of 100 non-latex gloves at my local drugstore
for things like dealing with messy stuff. I also
have some that are for using harsh chemicals. I
think the regular gloves from the drugstore were $7 for the box.

I'm also a fan of plastic bags for cleaning cat boxes and the like.
They give you plenty of room to stretch your fingers.

I have a funny little thing that is actually a
potholder that is worn only on the thumb. I like
it for protecting my thumb when using a hammer.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] door bells.

2010-05-03 Thread Betsy Whitney, Dolphin Press
Aloha Julio,
Yes, lots of places sell them. However, I bought
a mid-priced one at home depot and it lasted
about eight months. The one I bought has four D
batteries in the base, and one in each of the two
outside buttons. The batteries that go in the
buttons is smaller than a triple a battery, but
it is the same shape. I bought replacement
batteries but that didn't fix the problem. I wish
now that I had learned how to replace a real
doorbell. The wires that connected the original
bell are still in the wall, so maybe I'll think
about resurrecting them. I wanted a button in the
front and in the back, and my original bell had only one button.

Aloha all
I've never seen one of these things, but perhaps
it could become something. If it's big enough and
it can be cleaned, could it be a cabinet or
perhaps a doll house? If it is much bigger, how
about a place for a small person to hang out with
her books, color crayons and a soft blanky.
Or maybe it could be a small dog house? Obviously
I know nothing about it's size.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] linking wii to internet

2010-05-02 Thread Betsy Whitney, Dolphin Press
I'm so glad this subject came up. Scot, you mention using an Apple
router. I have 3 PCs in the house and one Mac. I can connect my PCs
to my router and get a wireless connection for my laptop. Router has
external antennas and is a linksys. However, when I try to connect
the Mac to the router it refuses to work. I have to keep it connected
to the hub directly.
Do Macs only work with Apple routers?

Aloha Lenny,
I'm so worried about things that fall out of, or jump across the room
when taking something apart that I often work inside a cardboard box
so that things can't get away from me. I also work over a cheap
aluminum pan if I think I might have lots of little things such as
bolts or screws. The pan is only about a half inch deep, but it is 17
inches long and about 15 wide. Keeps things contained pretty well.
Congratulations!

Aloha Lenny,
I don't have that exact item, but something similar. When mine
stopped working well, it was the connection between the end of the
brush and the outer enclosure. I bought a new brush, about $10 and
all was well. I think taking it apart to see what's happening will be
okay. Mine didn't have any of those little nasty springs that jump
out and fly across the room in it.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] handywoman question- needle threaders

2010-04-13 Thread Betsy Whitney, Dolphin Press
Aloha,
I think the web site was provided for the
possible purchase of needles that are already threaded.

I've seen the wire type needle threaders in the
notions section of the grocery store. Many
travel-sized sewing kits come with them inside
with several colors of thread, a thimble,
sometimes a pair of tiny scissors or a seam
ripper. Some kits even have a few buttons and safety pins.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] handywoman question- needle threaders

2010-04-13 Thread Betsy Whitney, Dolphin Press
Aloha Linda,
I agree with Dave's email. I have used both of
those threading solutions. I keep the wire loop
kind in my purse in case I am out somewhere and
don't have the self-threading needles around.
Before 911, I used to carry a self-threading
needle in my purse, but not anymore of course.

If you have hand coordination challenges, there
are some other needle threaders that are used by
putting the end of the needle with the eye into a
tiny cup shaped part of a device, and then you
place your thread on another part of the
threader. Then you push down on a lever and the
device threads the needle. I remember using one
of these when I was little and didn't like it.

Another alternative is to purchase needles that
are already threaded. I believe they are sold by
places such as American Foundation for the Blind
and/or the Braille Institute store in California.
I haven't seen a catalog of blindness products
from either one of these places lately, so don't know if they still carry them.
Good luck, Betsy

RE: [BlindHandyMan] hybrid water heaters

2010-04-13 Thread Betsy Whitney, Dolphin Press
Aloha all,
Are the instant hot waterheaters considered hybrids?
My instant tank cost $600.00 7 months ago,
produces 4.5 gallons per minute, costs me $20 a
month to run, removing it and created lots more
space in the laundry room. We took out a 30
gallon propane tank that was costing us about
$100 a month to run. I think the propane costs more here in Hawaii.
We love the new tank

it is his job to wash dishes and they are not
clean. I've been washing dishes for more years
than I am willing to admit here, but I assure you
that I will never forget how. There are some items that I still wash by hand.

I must say that since we installed the
dishwasher, my water bill has gone down $7 per
month. My dishwasher does not require me to rinse
the dishes before putting them in. I only have to
make sure that there are no chunks of food on them.

2010-03-28 Thread Betsy Whitney, Dolphin Press
Aloha Brice,
I have a Whirlpool conbo washr/dryer unit. There
is a setting for heavy-duty wash which does
something similar. I suggest that you try to find
out how to set it for a permapress load if you're not sure what it is set on.

Perhaps if you could find out the model of the
washer, you could download a manual or you could
contact Whirlpool tech support at:
whirlpool_customerexperie...@whirlpool.com

BTW, when I recently contacted them to get a
braille overlay for my new dishwasher, they told
me they no longer provide that service.

I think I'm not comfortable doing it, and scarier
than that, HWKE (he who knows everything) will
think he should do it. I probably can scare him
by reminding him that electricity is involved. I
suggested that he unplug the unit before messing

We are going to get our sheet vinyl installed by
the same contractor who installed our kitchen
cabinets and counter, so I think I'll let him do it.
However, it would be much more fun to let you

2010-03-23 Thread Betsy Whitney, Dolphin Press
Aloha Ron,
I thought exactly what you're saying. Yesterday
we got a flashlight and a mirror trying to see
what might be in there. I'm not afraid of putting
my hand in there and I even ran my finger nail
around the very edge to see if I could find something. No joy.

I think the poor thing may be 30 years old. It's
a Kenmore and I thought about calling someone,
but that will cost me more than a new one.
Please feel free to send more suggestions.

2010-03-22 Thread Betsy Whitney, Dolphin Press
Aloha Everyone,
We are ready to have vinyl flooring installed in the kitchen. We
discovered that the current vinyl was installed over some old
flooring that my contractor thinks is what they call VCT. Does anyone
know when they stopped using asbestos in such flooring? We may be
able to remove the top layer and lay the new over the bottom, but
this house was built in 1979 and I suspect that the VCT was the first
flooring installed here.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Molded Bathroom Walls!

2010-03-21 Thread Betsy Whitney, Dolphin Press
Hi Claudia,
I have those in both of my bathrooms and love
them. Depending on where one lives they may be
costly, but here I can get a replacement for
about $200. When we had to replace a washer in
our tub faucet, I priced a replacement because it
was a good possibility that the enclosure was
going to get cracked in order to get to the
problem. It didn't crack for which I was most grateful.

Having had tile and cleaning it for years, I
would put another enclosure in if something
happened to ours. What is your son using to
scrape it? It's not easy. Perhaps you can remove
the problem before it gets any worse. Maybe you
can remove anything from the bathroom that is sharp.

I did push the reset button, twice actually, but
no luck. Motor still just hums and there is no
sound that makes me think the hatchet-head things are moving.

[BlindHandyMan] Washer drainage hose lint catcher

2010-03-20 Thread Betsy Whitney, Dolphin Press
Aloha again,
A few weeks ago we discussed solutions for keeping water from
splashing when it drains from the washer. I took the suggestion to
cover the end with a nylon stocking, but when it gets full it pops
off of the hose even though I have it tied on and have a rubberband
looped around it three times. I went to home Depo yesterday to buy
one of the screen socks that someone mentioned but they didn't have
one. Will whoever wrote about the sock please let me know where you
purchased it?
Thanks, Betsy
