I saw many of the files on the handy man site when I helped David edit them.
There were many references to diagrams and figures. When Ray gets back from
vacation perhaps he can give me the URL sources so I can go there, see the
figure and then write a description.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] blind techniques

2006-10-19 Thread spiro
in your defense Tom.
I recently read a book on tape from NLS. I forget their RC#.
But it was called "Windows for Dummies". I am one.
I thought it would help.
Now reading along so far, carefully tells you alot. But it all comes
crashing down right here!
The book was full of, "right click" and "double click on the ..."
and i read the whole thing, (gaining alot on windows structure) and found
no key stroke commands.
Now, my complete frustration makes me ask, "why would NLS put it on tape?
Just for the *oherwise print impared?" So those who can't hold a book, or
the dyslexic will benefit, and I think that's great.
But even a readers note would have been helpful.
So i can, and we've all been there,
feelthat frustration.

similarly, even though it may be advertising, there have been some
articles that explain what a unit or substance will and will not do (CYA
on the part of the company) and that is informative as well. Even if it's
main benefit was to keep the company from getting hauled into liability
cases.
so I am thankful, if even what I have learned often, is that I am under
experienced for what much of what the other guys can do.
Info is knowledge, and fore warned is fore armed, and isn't that half an
octopus?

I'd vote to continue as it is as long as the general subject of

Aren't we taking this a little too far? Everyone should be able to express
an opinion, and that opinion should be respected! If there is no agreement,
I am sure that we all know where the delete key is located! I believe there
is always someone who benefits from the information!

Re: [BlindHandyMan] blind techniques

2006-10-19 Thread Dan Rossi
I have to agree with everyone on this, (nothing like a strong stance).

When I first saw Mickey's and Tom's messages, I agreed with them to a
certain degree. Sometimes there is virtually nothing I can get out of
certain posts, but other times the posts are extremely useful. I am
extremely liberal with the delete key but I subscribe to a number of lists
work and none work related and my delete key is getting a bit tired.

Never-the-less, I would much rather have Ray and others out there doing
the research with the occasional clinker in there rather than always have
to do it myself.

So, I prefer that we keep things as they were, and there is really no
reason at all for anyone to "get the hell out of here".

There are a number of people on this list who are pretty much amateurs
like myself, a number of folks who are just lurkers, and a few who are
exceptionally valuable for their hands on experience. I include Mickey,
Tom, and Dale as well as a few others who I can't remember at the moment,
in this category.

this is a tremendously useful list and I would rather not see it get
ripped up in flames over a misunderstanding. So let's get back on the
track of building things.

I have a further suggestion. When information is posted that includes a
reference to a diagram Ray, or who ever is posting it, should enlist the
help of one of us partials to write a verbal description of the figure. I
have considerable experience in doing this and am willing to do my share of
the work.

Since it's come down to a vote I say lets keep things the way they are now.
How did the first blind man to drive a nail figure out how to do it. He
first learned how a sighted person did it because that was the only
information available. Then he adapted the sighted method and worked out
how he could do it without seeing the hammer and nail. Let's stick with it.
I use my delete key a lot and I won't say on what. It's no big deal.
Listen to jaws read a sentence or so, reach for the delete key, and click,

RE: [BlindHandyMan] blind techniques

2006-10-18 Thread Jeff Kisecker
I too didn't think that Mickey's post was at all offensive, he was just
asking for some additional information and assistance from the blindness
prospective. Every list has to have some controversy once in a while, let
the thread work itself out.

Thanks, Jeff

Hi All,

If I can weigh in here for a minute.

I thought Mickey's post was done well, and I didn't think there was anything
wrong with it.

I just don't think that Mickey was necessarily thinking about the over 200
members on the list, and the fact that some of them, whether it be a small
portion or large portion of our members, have usable sight, such as Don
Shaw, or Boop, and for a time, before I went completely dark, I had some
usable vision, as well, so Ray's posts do have merit, whether they be from a
blind or sighted perspective.

There have been many different opinions on this subject, some agreed with
Mickey, and some did not, in any case, it is not up to a regular member on
the list to decide where the list goes, it is up to the list owner and
moderator.

If you have problems with how the list is being run, or the direction that
it is taking, feel free to write the owner or moderator. I mean, Jesus,
there are, I think, something like four or five moderators, and I'm sure you
get along with, at least, one of them.

Another point is that these problems should be discussed off-list, not on
list.

When the necessary changes are to be implemented, and or if the owner and
moderators feel that a consensus is needed from list members, then the
subject should be broached on-list, otherwise, comments on list practises
and allowances should be kept off-list.

Lastly, there is one suggestion I would have for Ray, and that is, he should
include the original website address with his posts, this serves two
purposes...

First, it allows the reader to check it's legitimacy, and accuracy, and
allows for added ability of the reader to add the website to their
favourites list.

Secondly, it allows for the reader to go onto the website and check out if
there's more stuff the reader might want to glean from it.

I know of such posts that Ray has submitted where the information was, in a
way what I was looking for, but had just the right amount off as to be
useless to me, however, I wanted to go to the website to see if there might
have been an addendum to the article that would've included that subtle
difference that would have adapted the article to suit me.

In any case, these suggestions have allowed the groups that I moderate to
work alright, and I offer these ideas as suggestions for possible
application.

OK Tom, you have had your saynow I will tell you the way things are going
to,. be,.
Yes it is a black/white/ yes no issue. We the moderators, that put the time
and effort in this list, sure don't have the extra time, to read each post, in
order to decide is this a sited how to,. are a blind how too issue.
does this post pertain to the sited are the blind. Besides I think that most
folks on this list, wouldn't want us to sincer the list postings like that...
I personally like to hear the sited way of doing some projects, then adapting
the project to do the blind way, that I would need to do the same project.
If the post does not pertain to me, well I sure know where to find the delete
key!!!.
I would rather have the sited way to do a thing, rather than, the other
choice, That would be know info at all. grin.
So again Tom and list it will need to be one way are the other. And I am
sure not saying that this needs to be a list of forwards,. Know way. But
some forwards from time to time In my way of thinking are OK. But We will do
what the biggest part of the list member ship wants to do...
And know this thread will not end now,.
We will take comments on this issue,. until tomorrow afternoon, and then I
will talk to the list moderators, then we will talk about what the list wants,
and then post the results. Then the thread will end. At that time the members
that don't like the way it worked out, can sure feel free to unsubscribe.
Regards Don

  don,
In no way do I want there to be no forwards on the list.
I simply thought, from my own personal viewpoint, that some wer so visually
oreinted as to be of little use.
However I see that many like such and
therefore withdraw the objections I had, particularly as I
offended the researchers which i had no intent to do.

I said I would not post on this subject again,
but had too because I didi not mean
  to imply any such hard
bound rule at all and don't want to be seen to have promoted such an idea.

Please do not make a black and white yes/no situation
out of something that was a discussion.

and let's, as David F. says, end it here.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] blind techniques

2006-10-18 Thread Dale Leavens
Come on guys! Knock it off!

Mickey expressed a perfectly reasonable frustration and it is not the first
reference to that sort of frustration I have seen on this list. Some things
are probably not fully appropriate, I have forwarded or copied stuff to the
list when I thought it to be relevant to a current or past discussion never
knowing for certain it would still be of interest or value to someone.
Therefore, although I put a different view on Mickey's post I also want to
say I am not fully opposed to the sentiment. I will add that though it
sometimes happens that probably inappropriate stuff does get posted it is
also true that it doesn't happen all that often compared with many lists I
follow.

Mickey has tested the waters, I expect has a sense of the general attitude
of the group and I am certain, from his posts that he has the intelligence
to make his own decisions about remaining subscribed or not.

Frankly, his loss would be the loss of a valuable resource here. I find
myself pausing and waiting before posting at times now because he is here
and often provides excellent information here so that I don't feel the need
to do so. There are a few here with varied experience to share and I don't
like to think that we would not want to keep them feeling welcome and
thereby lose their valuable contribution.

If, as I am told, there are about 200 subscribers to this list we don't need
to worry any of them that something they might say will result in this sort
of response.

Mickey, I am not a principal in this group or the list so I have no more
standing than you but that notwithstanding I want you to know I am sorry, I
apologies for what I consider to be extreme and unreasonable treatment.

Don,

Why all the hostilaty? It is certainly not called for.

The original question was fair, polite, and legitimate. It was asked simply to
see how others felt. It did that and then, for some reason, you and a couple
of others get nasty toward me. It makes no sense.

All I did was ask an honest question abut a list that purports to be about
how a "blind" person can do all kinds of handyman type jobs. I simply stated my
frustration that some postings are strictly geared toward the sighted and tell,
in no way, how a blind person can do the job. I was not at all rude or nasty to
anyone. I think this is a very fair question and it did get some honest
answers. I don't think I deserve the nasty treatment for asking an honest
question.

Maybe it's really just a "post anything you want as long as the moderator
agrees with you list" and really isn't about blindness at all. If so, then I
was mistaken.

At least, all of my postings have been from a blindness perstective.

I agree, Jay. Mickey asked a legitimate question. Some agreed and some
disagreed. I suspect enough agreed that things will continue pretty much as
is. However, things have gone from disagreements over a legitimate question
to...I'm not sure what.

Even though I didn't agree with Mickey's position I sure hope he remains on

Dear Don,
I found Tom's and Mickey's post well-considered and civilized. Every list
occasionally does a self-review of one sort or another and this is one of
the beauties of how these things work. I'm deeply disappointed in your
reactions. A suggestion such as "Get the hell out" is both unbecoming and
uncalled-for unless the person to whom it was directed has proven to be
malicious in intention. Please!!! listen to your last two responses.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] blind techniques

2006-10-18 Thread Tom Fowle
don,
In no way do I want there to be no forwards on the list.

 As far as forwards go
If they are about finnishing wood or some thing that I have no interest in
I just delete them
But if they are about cars or chain saws or some thing that I am interested
in I will take the time to read them.
So I have no problem with the curent format. I think it works out just fine.

Maybe it's really just a "post anything you want as long as the moderator
agrees with you list" and really isn't about blindness at all. If so, then I
was mistaken.

At least, all of my postings have been from a blindness perstective.

  Hi all.

I'm sorry, but I get frustrated when I read many things posted to this list
that are simply a rehash of information available out there that is intended
for sighted people. The information posted does not include the techniques and
procedures to get the task done as a blind person. Shouldn't a rule of posting
to this sight require the information posted to include the blindness
techniques needed to do the Job?

Granted, some posts do include blindness techniques and they are greatly
appreciated. I am here, after all, to learn and share blindness techniques for
doing all sorts of jobs as a blind person. It is of great help and
encouragement to hear how other blind people are doing these jobs. It is of
little or no help to me to hear how to do jobs by using vision. There are
plenty of tv shows, books, and the internet to find information for sighted
people. There is virtually no other place to get information of how to do these
things as a blind person.

This is, of course, just one person's opinion. I would like to hear what
others think.

  Thanks-- Mickey

Re: [BlindHandyMan] blind techniques

2006-10-18 Thread Jay Williams
Hi, Mickey and the list,
Nothing wrong with "how-to" posts as such, but in recent times it seems to
me that a virtual flood os such came along with little heed paid as to their
relevance to their usefulness to us. Many of us are on several lists and
there comes a time when a certain feng shui response must take over. If am,
of course, not advising that such collecting from other sites cease. I
simply suggest that whomever posts one looks at it and considers its
relevance.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] blind techniques

2006-10-18 Thread Mickey Fixsen
All I did was ask an honest question abut a list that purports to be about how
a "blind" person can do all kinds of handyman type jobs. I simply stated my
frustration that some postings are strictly geared toward the sighted and tell,
in no way, how a blind person can do the job. I was not at all rude or nasty
to anyone.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] blind techniques

2006-10-18 Thread Trouble
Your post is interesting, but totally one sided and that is from a
blind point of view.
Be nice if there was direction for jobs and products for the blind
along with the sighted. However, no matter what you think or say.
Many people out there in todays society still get amazed that we can
even do the most simple things being blind. Things that if a sighted
person said it they wouldn't even give it a second thought.
By knowing how the sighted do it, and your own abilities. You can
come up with a reasonable way of doing something people didn't think
you could do in the first place.
If you want a example of just how much people or friends think of
your blindness. Tell them that you cook or something simple that you
know wouldn't get a response from a sighted person doing it, check
there response. That alone is why things have no direction or even a
clue out side of directions for the sighted. They make up the mass
selling populous therefor get the easy way out. its up to us to
figure out the blind way of doing things, and sharing that with
others on a list such as this.

Thanks to all who replied to this issue.

As expected, the responses are extremely varied. If nothing else, it has been
interesting.

Keep all of the good blind tricks and techniques coming.

Well as a blind female and should I need to have some major repairs done
which I do have some patio issues hanging over my head and I asked this list
for some info pertaining to what I needed to do to have it fixed and I
received a ton of excellent information on the subject..
I of course will not do the repairs myself, but I like being aware of what
it takes to have the job done correctly and the tools/supplies are all
visual products but least I will know if I'm getting a good deal on the job
rather than being in the dark and having to go alone with whatever is
suggested at the time when it could be a less expensive way for me..
I appreciate the wealth of info that is provided on this list many many
things I never knew of.
So as far as I'm concerned I think this list is well worth the efforts all
is put forth into and the researching of said products weather blind or
sighted do it is irrelevant..

I'm confused by the discussion, I don't know of many things in the world easier
to do then press the delete key. In particular, with respect to advertising,
some of the material on power tools has been invaluable. It's the kind of
thing that it would take a lot of time to search for.

Mickey,
HERE HERE! In spades.

Although there may be some argument made that some visual techniquues may
help some low vision folks, I delete any and all articles
that do the following:
1. discribe a technique from a visual point of view:
2. promote a product by its manufacturer re: copy advertising.

Like I said yesterday afternoon, if anybody isn't happy with the level of
research that is being done on here by various list members then by all means

I agree with this statement,. Two years ago was my last roofing job. And it
isn't because I am blind, just old.

2006-10-17 Thread Lee A. Stone

I know from what I have learned from this list in the last few years
that a previous contractor gave it a shove with no vasaline for my
roofing job. that is why we are replacing a roof in less than 20 years.
actually only 2 out of 8 contractors this past year have suggested, as
you have on this list installing the heavier shingles. I will not do
this job as in my opinion the roof is far to steep for someone who is
not a trained roofer. nothing to do with blindness. Like Hailey , I want
to know what to expect, what to feel and if I get screwed this time, it
is my fault. . actually the man I am waiting for did a Friends roof
early this ummer j just a block away.. I have done a few small jobs
working with pvc pipe and it was because I learned from this list , so
I extend a hand of thanks to all who share what they know. Lee, PS, I
could use a full time plumber but could not afford the rates to keep up
with things that go wrong in a house which was built I think in 1951
and it was built in a hurry, as we slowly find out. Lee

Re: [BlindHandyMan] blind techniques

2006-10-17 Thread Dale Leavens
I would add to what Ralph has said that sometimes the best way to figure out
a blind way of doing something is to understand the usual way sighted people
do it, not because they are sighted but because understanding what is
required permits one to improvise.

I learned how to sweat copper pipe from the clerk in a hardware store. He
didn't actually teach me but he described thoroughly how it is done. The man
didn't have a grade 8 education but he also didn't have the presumption that
I shouldn't be told.

Now here is the thing as I perceive it; I cannot observe many things being
done, television programming frequently is insufficiently narrated, the few
books I have looked into depend on photographs and drawings partly because
it is clear but I suspect partly because the authors lack clarity of
intellect and/or language to be able to logically and sequentially write out
the description.

I am often struck by the information not present when reading a catalogue or
browsing the Web for goods and services and usually frustrated by the trivia
and tripe the descriptions contain. I have to believe that it is because the
image provides the information lacking in the text.

Well of course I actually know that is not true the objective is to shift
cash from my possession to that of the vendor which most seem to think is
more easily done on an emotional level than a factual and intellectual level
but I digress.

Some times it is just better to understand the process then work out how to
achieve it without sight.

Perhaps Tom will remember us working through the sweating of copper pipe
with the Educational Assistant and young high school lad a couple of years
ago. She did not know the process so that is where we started then how I
achieve it. Doubtless she had to improvise further to teach him how to
achieve it and she did. There is, in my opinion, some merit in description
of how things are done if for no other reason than to help grasp the
concepts that sighted people can acquire by observation.

Another example that comes up in my life fairly often is having a sighted
person tell me how to get somewhere. They don't describe the route the way I
would describe it to another blind person, much of what they use for
guidance has no meaning for me at all and they never or rarely have much
sense of what might be meaningful in way finding for me but, with their
input I am often armed with a good starting point to find my way in my way.

That reminds me, I should drop that lady a note to see how things are
getting along, she must be an exceptional woman.

People who post instructions and or information on how to do things can only
offer what is available to them during the course of their research. Now
having said that if anybody feels that this information is lacking in some form
or another then by all means find and post more detailed instructions for the
blind if you can find it. In other words if you can do better then go right
ahead and do so. We'll all benefit from it I'm sure.

I agree that what makes this list especially useful are the tips and
explanations for how to do things the blind way. I can see some value in
the information that does not pertain specifically to blind ways. One of
the challenges of being blind is that finding information is more
time-consuming and difficult than for sighted people. Therefore, it is nice
to have that information run through my inbox. (actually my Blind Handyman

Bottom line, though, is that the tips and discussions about how to do things

Re: [BlindHandyMan] blind techniques

2006-10-17 Thread one foxy lady

[BlindHandyMan] blind techniques

2006-10-17 Thread Mickey Fixsen

I would like to hear what others
think.

Thanks-- Mickey
