My own daughter spent over a year in that Texas Children's neonatal ICU.
It is the best around and with prayers I'm sure she will pull through.

You can help out by posting the attached fliers online, and providing
flier's to other groups you know of.

Examples of places to post online.
Facebook Groups you are a member of or that will allow you to post on
Email groups/lists you have access to
Other clubs or organizations web sites.
Online forum sites

Include other groups that could share amateur radio activity's such as
off roading groups, hunting groups, and other outdoors type groups
just to name a few.

Attached are two Houston Hamfest fliers, one is a PDF version and the
2nd is a JPG version.    They are the same, other then the format.
Facebook posts will work better with the jpg version, while PDF
version work better for everything else.

YOU can make the Greater Houston Hamfest even more successful by just
helping get to word out.

I’m not the only one that gave that as a description!

It was hard work, both physically, and emotionally. A lot of passionate
planning  from many folks that really care for the last 6 months. There were
some veteran planners among us And a lot of new hams working with us  that had
never been to a hamfest at all.  This gave us a huge range of new ideas and
talent.

Some of us knew we could easily do a hamfest because we have done it 19 times
before, “lets just do what we have always done”,  but a few of us wanted to see
it grow and improve. A few of us were very concerned about the budget, ALL of
us knew  it would be taking a big chance expanding the budget to do a TWO DAY
SHOW.
Will anyone even come on a Friday?

Setup on Thursday was tough, but thanks to Mr. Washington and his Grandson for
setting up all the tables and chairs. We had a good amount of volunteers to
help on Thursday, mostly BVARC members, one notable volunteer who is not a
BVARC member who was there all three days ALL DAY is Chuck Hale – KF5UXP
(trying to talk him into joining the club) …

Ham Radio Outlet (HRO) came in for setup on Thursday with a huge retail
display, and they thrilled the Houston airwaves by checking into our Stir Crazy
Net as they drove to the hamfest. Wow, what a great retailer and supporter of
our hamfest.

Friday we were there early to allow more vendors to claim tables and start
setting up. (it was a sellout (plus))

It was busy for me, looking up tables and walking folks to the tables (lots of
walking) verifying they are no the right tables and happy..  thanks to Scott
McKee – NT5SM and a couple of others for helping me with the paperwork.

We had an onsite Paramedic for your safety, BVARC Member David Stevens – KI5LDZ
– He was also a big help with other volunteer duties when he was not saving
lives..

Opening to the public at 2PM, we had a couple of early gate crashers I had to
throw out. Yeah you know who you are…  ha ha

We were fully booked and the folks started streaming in, the crowd got huge..
Wow, on a Friday?  yes!..
At least as big or bigger than our past hamfests, as I was squeezing through
the isles at one point it suddenly hit me, WOW, this is Friday, and the big day
Saturday isn’t even here yet…wow

The show ran till 8pm,  a lot of folks were clearing out by 6:30-7ish, around
8pm Walter (K5WH) and a group of Balloon guys were the only ones left… Planning
for an 8pm close was probably too late..  Lesson learned for next years show.

Saturday morning at sunup the tailgaters were already swarming, and our doors
opened at 8AM..  A few VENDORS showed up for a table they should have claimed
already (Friday and Saturday)
It is a sell out! Where were you Friday? We counted you as a NO SHOW!
Sorry I sold your Tables to someone else!
NO REFUNDS…
I was just being mean to drive home the point that we are a two day show, we
need vendors here for two days!!
but of course I am not really mean,
I was prepared to set up some new tables and I did have a place for them ..
(being mean for minute was part of my plan)
Initial vendor reaction was RAGE (wanting to beat me up).. ha ha
When I told them I was joking, I do have a table for you!!
I think I actually made a few new friends out of this crazy plan.

The Doors opened and wow, another huge huge crowd of people, by noon even the
food vendor was overwhelmed with a line of maybe 50 folks(?) waiting on burgers
..
it was difficult to to even squeeze down the isles..

Thanks to many companies (list on the houstonhamfest.org website) we had NINTY
SIX, count em, NINTY SIX donated door prizes PLUS three MAJOR RAFFLE  prizes (I
heard between $7000 and $8000 total) ..  With that many prizes to try to give
away, we almost didn’t have enough time (in two days!!).
What in the past had been a prize an hour, or a prize every half hour, BUT this
year it become our announcer’s main job  we had constant door prizes..

After recently traveling a couple hundred miles to a hamfest ( I won’t mention
which one) I was disappointed to find out they BAN ALL DOGS except service
dogs.. I brought my two Boxers and my wife stayed in outside with the dogs
while I walked through the show in 20 minutes)
As a joke – (sortof) In some of our early hamfest website blurbs, and on at
least one of our marketing hamfest emails, I mentioned

Maybe the all club idea may work for another reason. Houston is so ANATHEMA
big.

I can see the spring big meet in Rosenberg.

But for somebody in Conroe, you might as well go to the moon.

Maybe some small meets. Some on the Northside. We do have Baytown and Orange
on the I10E corridor.

Re: [BVARC] Greater Houston Hamfest

2022-08-26 Thread Nick Creason KE5QY via BVARC
Hi,

I’m coming in to the conversation late so these ideas may have been discussed
before but I’ll through in my thoughts anyway.

Have we looked at working with ARRL to tie an annual regional or divisional
meeting to the Houston Hamfest? May be to late to include this year, but could
work for future event. This would bring in some interesting speakers and free
advertising.

Could we work with other non-ham organizations and business in the area that
might be willing to donate prizes or exhibits that would be of interest to a
larger audience? Maybe NASA or SpaceX could provide some seminars or exhibits.
County or state emergency services and demos.

Set up some events or tours for non-ham activities that would make it more of a
family event. There are lots of activities for the whole family locally

Advertise it in all the ham magazines well ahead of time. Give people from
outside the area a chance to plan for the event.

Invite the local media to the event and play up what will be there. (Newest
radios, demonstrations, local celebrities)

Give it a unique name. Hamcom and Hamvention sound like a big deal I’d want to
attend. Greater Houston Hamfest sounds like a local event just for locals.

I went to the Dallas Hamcom for years and it was always played up as a national
or international event. People started planning for the next year while they
were there. Is the Houston event date set a year in advance?

I do think getting a group together made up of representatives from all the
local clubs would help pulling everything together and bring in new ideas.
Dallas and Dayton both have permanent committees planning and supporting their
events. (Maybe even contact them and ask for some advice and ideas).

Just some ideas.

Nick, KE5QY

I wish Not being in Houston makes it a little hard. But I do have
contacts there. I think it would be great if the club had a permanent
clubhouse, if it has the money to be able to afford it. The old Houston
amateur radio club site was down near the Astrodome and eventually became,
shall we say, an area nobody wanted to visit. I love the bi-monthly
auctions they had. Bought a lot of gear because of them. It's time for
Houston to have that again..
I'd be happy to join the committee. I'd have to be making the meetings at
night or on the weekends though. Provided I'm not on the road for work
which I've been doing a lot of. In fact I have today off because I already
hit my 40 hours yesterday

Re: [BVARC] Greater Houston Hamfest

2022-08-26 Thread Michael Amos via BVARC
I second this... and agree wholeheartedly. When I lived in the Atlanta area it
seemed like we had a decent hamfest at least once every couple of months. That
may not be exactly what was real but it felt that way. And not just tailgates
but actual hamfests. A couple of those were fairly sizable. When I moved to
Houston, I was expecting a HUGE amount of them and activity, etc. but was met
with disappointment. Houston is what, the 4th largest City in the US and we
have a VERY weak ham turnout.
The creation of an organization would help relieve some of the stresses of
setting up and running a decent hamfest. AGAIN, maybe some calls to the groups
that run the big shows such as Dayton and get advice on how to do it. I cant
imagine they would refuse that. I like to believe that hams overall want to do
everything they can to promote the hobby and keep it alive.

Also, a centralized location would also help. Or we could call it the "way out
in the boonies countryfied hamfest" jk.

Just my 12.345 cents.

McAllister once said " Houston hams suck." The old Houston Amateur Radio Club
used to have bi-monthly auctions at its clubhouse on OST. Sadly that club went
under and the property was sold. Which was a damn shame because it was a very
nice clubhouse with a fully operational HF station. And unfortunately that just
proved Andy's statement. I think it's time to change that.

Hi Neal,

Yes it was discussed and it was considered a non-issue. We feel that the event
is early enough on Saturday morning, people will still come out.

I know it may be an inconvenience on the ones that are either selling or
working the event but finding dates that will work are difficult.

Thanks for the input.

Re: [BVARC] Greater Houston HamFest - Organizational Meeting

2020-01-02 Thread Eddie Runner via BVARC
check the club website, bvarc.org  and the latest newsletter (monthly)is first
thing on the website for you to download and read (free)..
The be sure to listen in on the Monday night net 146.94MHz 8pm(details on the
website if you forget)In fact you might as well monitor this frequency or other
active ones in your area to keep in touch..
And the eating schedule, Saturday morning, wednesday lunch bunch.details on the
website..
Or get your ticket now for the club awards banquet in Januaryor Hamfest tickets
for the hamfest in March(tickets for both available on the
websites.)bvarc.orghoustonhamfest.org
or come to the Hamfest meeting at Fudruckers this sunday afternoon..Even if you
do not want to volunteer to help us run the hamfest in marchyou can meet a few
folks and eat a good burger!!
See you soonEddieNU5K
PS, we used to have an interactive calendar on the website, it allowed
individualmembers as well as other ham clubs post events and notices on our
main webspage..
It was used heavy for a while but just by a few people, and eventually no one.I
would like to see it come back, but its hard to get folks involved enoughto be
consistent.

Eddie,

I will be out of town this weekend. Curt, WG5H, who has agreed to help with the
organization of the next GHH event. He will be attending the Sunday meeting. He
and I are trying to get some people together to form a team for the next GHH.
Your help will be crucial. Please say hello to Curt.

You had mentioned that you had a list of vendors and their contact information.
Curt and I will be going to Dayton and intend to talk to some of them to see if
we can sign them up. It would be great if you can share that list with us.

2019-04-03 Thread Steve Agee via BVARC
I will be at work, so unable to attend. The only thing I wanted to
mention is that while checking wristbands at the front door, I only had
one issue and that was the same guy as last year and his wife with the 4
way baby stroller with his 4 dogs inside. I told him that only service
dogs were permitted, and asked if they were service dogs. He said no,
but that I had let him in last year. I told him yes, I remember letting
him in last year, but I was counseled about that after the fact. He then
asked me if I was going to refund his f***ing ten dollars. I told him I
could not refund his f***ing ten dollars, since I'm not the one that
took his f***ing ten dollars, but to go back to the ticket office and
ask them. He then asked me to show him the ordinance stating that only
service animals were allowed. I told him I did not have that immediately
available, but he was welcome to come back to the business office (next
door over) during normal business hours and ask them for the
documentation he was requesting, and that our rental contract spelled it
out as part of the agreement we were governed by.

Re: [BVARC] Greater Houston Hamfest

2019-03-25 Thread Eddie Runner via BVARC
Bill, I don't want you to hesitate!

I want your input!

and thank you for it.

And your right, I don't want to be defensive or arguementative..

But on the other hand, I did tell Mike (the hamfest chairman) that I wanted to
start EARLY (NOW!!!) in

the planning for next years show and I think I did tell him I might not be nice
about how I go about it.. ha ha

No (kidding) I am always a nice guy, but I do want to criticize the things that
went wrong and grow the things

that went right!!

We already know 95% of our club members and 99% of other hams probably wont
help us at all, it is just the way life is.

But we are going to push for and ask for folks to help us anyway!!

At least the last two shows (maybe more) were seriously about to NOT HAPPEN at
all… A few years ago the Volunteer

Chairman quit right before the show. Several folks (several times) wanted to
help with the hamfest website and

just as they get started they quit and dissapear leaving stuff in dis array…

It is so frustrating!!

This year the show was so close to not happening that the website was basicly
CLOSED for most of last year.

People started calling me in October asking if the show was going to occur this
year, I had to be honest and say

" I DON’T KNOW"…

Mike Hartwig, our show chairman and our club president has been working at his
job in Dallas and trying to

commute down here for planning meetings and and club business.. is that easy?
Heck no,

but there is no one stepping up to take his place.

I am not trying to be defensive, I am just trying to point out how we need
help!!

We can all sit around and say WE NEED BIG VENDORS….
DUH!!!

We need people calling those vendors, emailing those vendors, keeping up with
who to talk to, when to plan

with them, what are their needs when attending our show, and so on.. We need to
do this with litterlly hundreds of

companies just to make sure we have a few good ones… We did it a little in the
past but not this year.

Oh, and we also need to ask these many vendors for help in the door prize and
promotional materials department..

For next year we do have someone new to do this task, we are already getting
together a list of companies and

marketing plans for tempting the big guys to come to ur next shows.

you know the Hamfest buys most of its own prizes???
When I got very involved in the planning side, I was amazed that more prizes
were not donated by companies ..

In most of the industries I have been involved with in my life many companies

DONATE to the charity (the hamfest is a 501C non profit)..

For a while when we could afford it, I made sure my little company donated BIG
prizes to the hamfest,

for several years my company would dontate a transcciever to the hamfest. Of
course we also dontated to

museum ships, field day, and some local schools, police charities and a bunch
of other things.

But my little business has had to slim down a bit in the last few years and I
am only donating my time now..

(trying to do the best I can)

For next year, we already have some NEW folks that are stepping up in a big way
to help us grow. We have some

early plans that are just getting uinderway and want to encourage IDEAS and
VOLUNTEERS..

I hope none of the current volunteers and door prize donators are not offended,
or frustrated or

anything other negetive by my posts.. the few donations, and the precious
volunteers that that did make it

possible for this show to happen are my heros!!

We not only want the fantastic great ideas, but we want solutions on how to
achieve these things.!

And yes, brainstorming is good! ha ha

Thanks again Bill..

This is more people saying more about the hamfest that ALL LAST YEAR!!!

Eddie,

Hesitated to make a comment on the attendance at the hamfest because I was sure
that it was going to be taken negatively and those hard working hams that
produced the event would immediately turn defensive. And that's what happened.

Why can't there be accusation free discussion on how to make things better for
attendees? Isn't this a forum? Does a commenter need to take a position on the
planning committee before his/ her opinion is considered? Why not seek opinions
as a brain storming session without feeling attacked.

Howard,

of course we all know BIG retailers and MAJOR Brands would attract more people
to our hamfest.

But just how do you think we can attract these guys to our hamfest? What are
YOUR ideas Howard?

We had Icom a couple years ago,

We had FLex Radio for several years,

we had Alinco and GRE for a few years…

we had Main Trading a few times

we had HamThreads a few years in a row,

none of those were here this year or last year.. I don’t know why?
Did we forget to buy them dinner?

Did we have bad breath?

In the past,

we had Austin Ham Radio store, he DIED,

we had Houston Amateur Radio, they went out of biz,

This year we did have Expert Linear, and the Sign Man, we did have the
suspender man, we did have EPO!

We are very happy they came.

Howard, don't let your being stuck at home without a ride hinder your ability
to get involved,

Last year we were lucky to have Scott Royall as a BVARC board member (he died
in office last year),

if you don't know Scott he had Muscular Distrophy ( I think that’s what it
was) and he was stuck in

a wheel chair with a service dog and a nurse, he could only talk through his
computer in a computerized

voice..

but when Scott though his ham club needed him he stepped right up (rolled up)
and volunteered,

he was voted in as a board member and was very influential during his service.

Thanks for the input

Next year is already in the planning stages.

Thanks to your tireless efforts as well! I want to thank the VEC team for
slogging it out from 8:30 to 1:00 pm. Including those that checked in to see if
they could help.
We had 19 candidates. Several are Extra’s and General’s now, plus quite a few
new Techs.
