[OSL | CCIE_Voice] i do not get something reagrding the Audio product

2009-07-31 Thread Shai Loufton
Hello all,
I am sorry - I have tried to keep up with the emails here but I am confused.
Let's say I have bought the BLS and I have now here with me at home the
"old" v2.0 HDD of the BLS (which is the case here).
Now - the product gets updated - and the new VOD should come out "soon"
And there is a mention of a new Audio product, which raises these following
questions:

1. Will the new Audio product be part of the BLS?
2. Can I ask, if it is part of the BLS, to have the new v3.0 HDD be
shipped to me only once the Audio part is done and have it on the HDD (like
it was on the v2.0 version and on the RS track HDD)?

Thanks,
Shai L.

Re: [OSL | CCIE_Voice] Volume 2 workbook?

2009-07-31 Thread Wayne Lawson
The VOD is done, technically - but we're working on the menu and
creation of the final product (final edits / production). It will
probably be shipping much sooner, but I don't want to give a date that
we can't hit. ;-)

What do you mean it is not free if you bought volume 1?

What about those of us who bought the BLS for v2?

Do we need to pay for an upgrade?

If waiting for 2 more weeks means we get the best, most complete product
then I'm all for that. I'd rather not try and rush the IPX guys or hassle
them to get it sooner if any aspect of the product (or service) suffers.
On that note, I'm still hoping for that download option.. *pretty please?*

Alex -

Volume 2 already has 2 labs available, but it's not free if
you've bought Volume 1 (we have 2 different books - 1 & 2). The VOD
will be shipping in 2 weeks, Audio in about 6 weeks (audio will be a
completely different product than the VOD). Please reference our blog

I concur. Especially during the Gatekeeper trainingŠ Mark refers to ³the
slide² quite a bit. I¹m very excited about the audio training being a
separate product. Can¹t wait to load it into my IPOD and transfer it to my
brain.

Keep up the good work. Maybe I¹ll be ready for my November lab attempt
after all.

Jonathan, the most interesting bit of this entire thread is that Ben Ng sent
you an email with explanation of why you failed!! CCIE exam is notorious for
not telling you exactly where you lost points. So this must be a massive help
for you. By the way is that some kind of a new process that every candidate
will get detailed report of reasons for failure or are you some sort of a VIP

I know, in way too much detail, why I failed... I got an email from

Good post.

I had a co-worker that passed the V2 lab about a year ago and he was
disappointed that half of the technology was outdated.

He was a systems engineer for a major Cisco partner.

The v2 exam, in the end, had become absurd. I remember when I was studying
for it that it felt like the v2 practical was testing the candidate on how
to take a test. The ATA focus was rediculous. An extrememly light argument
could be made for the 6608, but not the CatOS, sorry. When it was announced
that v3 would remove these pieces, it seemed like it was put together
reasonably and it was pushing the candidate toward mastery in areas of the
technology that were relevant. So far, it seems that what is left is an
exam that covers topics an expert really should know. Also, frankly, the
fact that the topology can be built completely in a home lab is a VERY big
deal (still expensive, but justifiable and will remain a lab that can be
used for years to come.) If Cisco's goal was to encourage the candidate to
master topics on a fundamental level, it feels like they're on the right
track by aligning these stars. Even when you fail the test, you feel that
whatever you learned is marketable in the real world and, therefore,
valuable to the professional.

I hope Cisco does not get carried away and makes changes before a year has
passed. It's a new exam and it takes time for people to study and work
through the technology that was initially announced, nevermind the time and
expense to IPexpert as a training partner.

by that time, but so what? AD makes CUP EASIER. VPIM is no big deal.

Yea, no 6608 with the messed up QoS, no VG248 (easy, but end of sale for a
long time so don't get to touch it in real and too expensive to have in a
lab.) No ATA (the most messed up piece of c**p I've ever seen.).

It seemed Cisco was at witts end on the V2 and started to put in questions
that were just PUZZLES just to make it harder and try to beat out all the
cheating sites. Seems today they are trying to get rid of said sites. The
open ended questions might get rid of "those" types of people who
concentrate on getting the configurations done and not studying the theory,
etc. So I hope you are right and the exam stays a breath of fresh air and a
test of knowledge and skill instead of putting a jig saw puzzle together.

Well, I appreciate the feedback. The V2 exam was renown for its
frustrations. I'm happy to hear that v3 is a test of knowledge and skill.
I decided to wait until V3 so that I didn't have to deal with studying
techniques that are irrelevant in the real world, like esoteric knowledge of
ATA hex code settings and CatOS. Where I live, only one shop still used
CatOS and last week they filed for bankruptcy. The 3750 as the HQ switch
was a godsend, I can afford to buy this thing and spend days learnining in
my home lab. V3's equipment changes were the smartest thing Cisco's done in
it's cert track.

Well, after reading the CCIE Blog and seeing what is going to be added
in 9 months or so scares the crap out of me, DNS, AD, SIP providers,
and god knows what else (security?)...

The test is much easier now than it will be... I can see a Presence
question telling you to integrate it with an offnet OCS box... or a
CUCCX with a Campaign...

Re: [OSL | CCIE_Voice] Thoughts on V3

2009-07-31 Thread Nara Shikamaru

Re: [OSL | CCIE_Voice] Thoughts on V3

2009-07-31 Thread Vik Malhi
Nice post Tim.

4.02 T1/E1 CAS
Vik: Not in the works for the time being

4.07 IP-IP Gateway/CUBE
Vik: Vol 2 lab #1 covers this

10.01 L2 Traffic Classifications and Policing
10.02 L2 Queuing Mechanisms
10.03 L2 LFI
Vik: L2 LFI covered in vol 1 and in every vol 2 lab release so far. L2
queueing/classification coming up.

12.03 Redundancy (CCX)
Vik: No plans on a second CCX server.

One of the things mentioned at Networkers- and I always have to refer back
to this session- was that a single CCIE V lab will not test ALL the topics.
In version 2 every lab had all the items listed under the blueptint
(CUE/Unity/CCX/CME/etc/etc) but in the v3 labs there is enough content to
mix it up a bit more. The speaker gave an example- some labs at some point
in the future will contain NO UCM at all!!!

We will try and reflect these statements in our vol 2 labs. Some will
contain no UCM and focus heavily around CME and vice versa. Some will
contain no CUPS and focus more on other applications. Some will contain no
CCX...etc. You get the idea.

We aim to cover all technologies in our labs and let me tell you why. When
we released our version 2 WB in early 2006 we covered BACD, VPIM, CUBE, etc,
etc. Some of these topics were not tested for years, some of these topics
were never tested. We were accused of ³over preparing² at the time in the
politest possible way. What would have been the impact of never covering
BACD and VPIM? You can only search forums to see how heavily these two
topics featured in the latter part of the version 2 lifetime. (Or ask Mark
Rocky or Mikael Jackson:-)

The point I am making is this: each lab released by Cisco will cover a
subset of the technology mentioned on the blueprint. You will hear rumors
over the next few weeks and months that there are no SIP phones or no SCCP
phones or no CUPS or no UC or no QOS,etc...The rumors might be true based
on the lab you get but I think Cisco do a good job at recognizing when a
particular technology has been exhausted and at that time they will
introduce new material from the blueprint into the exam.

Vik - A while ago I lined up the Volume 1 workbook with the blueprint.  I
highlighted these topics for further studying.

4.02 T1/E1 CAS
4.07 IP-IP Gateway/CUBE
10.01 L2 Traffic Classifications and Policing
10.02 L2 Queuing Mechanisms
10.03 L2 LFI
12.03 Redundancy (CCX)

I've touched most of them, except the CUBE.  Based on what you heard at
Networkers, are there other topics you'd recommend for self study?

2009-07-31 Thread Vik Malhi
I would recommend people sit the lab sooner rather than later. The shape of
the exam in its present state versus 6 9 months will be very different. As
the lab matures variation will increase and inevitably it will be more
difficult.

This is all idle Friday afternoon speculation off course.

It seemed Cisco was at witts end on the V2 and started to put in questions
that were just PUZZLES just to make it harder and try to beat out all the
cheating sites. Seems today they are trying to get rid of said sites. The
open ended questions might get rid of ³those² types of people who
concentrate on getting the configurations done and not studying the theory,
etc. So I hope you are right and the exam stays a breath of fresh air and a
test of knowledge and skill instead of putting a jig saw puzzle together.

OK, I took it monday in San Jose and failed (got a nice email from Ben
 Ng telling me why...)

It was actually easier than I thought it was going to be... and
 remarkably fair...

I made a mistake that broke something and that is the primary reason I
didn't pass (no, I cannot tell you what the mistake was, or even what
 was broken...).

I will say the exam was not what I expected (nope, can't tell you what
 I expected it to be...)

I am retaking it 9/1 in RTP

Re: [OSL | CCIE_Voice] Presence integration issue

2009-07-31 Thread Brian Valentine
Cisco provides a Telco router that we will not have access to. Is it
possible that they could have an AD/DNS server, which we would not have
access to? Isn't it possible that they could have a preconfigured AD/DNS
server that we need to utilize for CUPS/CUPC integration?

UCCX runs LDAP and synchs with CUCM using AXL. It also passes
authentication attempts to CUCM (which passes them on to AD if LDAP
authentication is enabled). Now, UCCX's LDAP isn't Active Directory (I
believe it uses OpenLDAP), but could we use that for CUPS/CUPC?

Thanks Jeff, very interesting indeed, as you said the key point is it's not
recommended but still achievable without AD/DNS. The question is how ? J
Perhaps other people on this forum may contribute their findings? As AD/DNS
won't be available in the real lab, it would be quite a challenge to
complete this task

Aamir, the only way I was able to get presence/IM working was to setup
AD/DNS. I was never able to get it working without. I also found a pretty
good book on CUPS which has some really good troubleshooting tips. BTW,
this book says CUP without AD is not recommended. Does not say it won't
work just not recommended. Title is "Deploying Cisco Unified Presence"
author is HouTong Luo, CCIE no. 6183 available at Amazon.

Re: [OSL | CCIE_Voice] Thoughts on V3

2009-07-31 Thread Jonathan Charles
Honestly, it isn't that bad...

Most of the information from version 2 applies to version 3, a quick
look at the blueprint will prove that out...

Yes, the hardware changed, and some of it made life easier, some of it
makes life harder...

Yes, there are traps set up for you (where config in question 7.3
destroys the solution you did in question 4.2, et al)...

Yes, the questions are very specific, and so are the solutions, they
did not reinvent the CCIE here, they just updated it to current
material...

Re: [OSL | CCIE_Voice] Thoughts on V3

2009-07-31 Thread Tim T
Vik - A while ago I lined up the Volume 1 workbook with the blueprint. I
highlighted these topics for further studying.

4.02 T1/E1 CAS
4.07 IP-IP Gateway/CUBE
10.01 L2 Traffic Classifications and Policing
10.02 L2 Queuing Mechanisms
10.03 L2 LFI
12.03 Redundancy (CCX)

I've touched most of them, except the CUBE. Based on what you heard at
Networkers, are there other topics you'd recommend for self study?

Re: [OSL | CCIE_Voice] Thoughts on V3

2009-07-31 Thread Brian Valentine
I don't know what we expect Jonathan to tell us. What we really want to ask
is something we don't really want to know and something he really can't tell
us anyway because of NDA.

Jonathan, bummer that you failed. It sounds like you know why you failed --
which is a very good thing. Better luck on your next attempt.

I will add this. I took the R&S exam last year and passed on my first
attempt. I also thought the exam was a fair test of knowledge and skill.
If you are well prepared in terms of understanding the technology deeply,
have a plan of how to attack your lab, and follow your plan, you certainly
CAN get 80 points in 8 hours. Now, I realize it is a different exam, but I
would expect the voice exam to be similar in that it will be achievable.
Cisco doesn't want to know primarily that you can do stupid tricks with
routers and phones. Now I haven't sat the voice lab exam yet, but I would
be extremely surprised and disappointed if there were 30 points of stupid
phone tricks. Cisco wants to know that you understand the technology deeply
enough that you can configure to a set of complex requirements. Bottom line
-- they want to know that you are an expert. To an expert the exam should
seem "easy". Of course, you could always have a tricky question or two,
but remember that you don't need 100% to pass.

Hopefully we all don't want a braindump from Johnathan. I think that's what
caused Cisco to create more and more puzzling questions. A technical test
became a riddle. I was expecting Batman and Robin to show up next if the test
didn't change soon. I think it's just a curiosity to see how bad it's going to
be.

If you have implemented CUPS, CUCM, CUCCX, etc, before you will have
NO problems with the open ended questions... the IPExpert questions
were orders of magnitude harder than the actual questions...

To give an example of the kind of question:

"where would you go in CUCM to specify the default auto-reg phone
protocol..."

Answer: Enterprise Parameters...

Seriously, it was that kind of difficulty (but not that question...)

Re: [OSL | CCIE_Voice] Thoughts on V3

2009-07-31 Thread Michael Ciarfello
Makes me want to try the exam earlier, but I'm going to stick to my plan.
December is re-take of one-week lab experience and I'm targeting for February
for the exam. Small risk of AD/DNS/VPIM being put back on the exam by that
time, but so what? AD makes CUP EASIER. VPIM is no big deal.

Yea, no 6608 with the messed up QoS, no VG248 (easy, but end of sale for a long
time so don't get to touch it in real and too expensive to have in a lab.) No
ATA (the most messed up piece of c**p I've ever seen.).

It seemed Cisco was at witts end on the V2 and started to put in questions that
were just PUZZLES just to make it harder and try to beat out all the cheating
sites. Seems today they are trying to get rid of said sites. The open ended
questions might get rid of "those" types of people who concentrate on getting
the configurations done and not studying the theory, etc. So I hope you are
right and the exam stays a breath of fresh air and a test of knowledge and
skill instead of putting a jig saw puzzle together.

Well, I appreciate the feedback. The V2 exam was renown for its frustrations.
I'm happy to hear that v3 is a test of knowledge and skill. I decided to wait
until V3 so that I didn't have to deal with studying techniques that are
irrelevant in the real world, like esoteric knowledge of ATA hex code settings
and CatOS. Where I live, only one shop still used CatOS and last week they
filed for bankruptcy. The 3750 as the HQ switch was a godsend, I can afford to
buy this thing and spend days learnining in my home lab. V3's equipment
changes were the smartest thing Cisco's done in it's cert track.

If you have implemented CUPS, CUCM, CUCCX, etc, before you will have
NO problems with the open ended questions... the IPExpert questions
were orders of magnitude harder than the actual questions...

To give an example of the kind of question:

"where would you go in CUCM to specify the default auto-reg phone protocol..."

Answer: Enterprise Parameters...

Seriously, it was that kind of difficulty (but not that question...)

Re: [OSL | CCIE_Voice] Thoughts on V3

2009-07-31 Thread Nara Shikamaru

The "easier" and "remarkably fair portion" is GREAT information, especially for
this early in the game.

He could of said "I'm lucky to have gotten 10 points. No way, good luck
suckers." He could have said, it's harder than IPExpert Lab 5.

Were the open ended questions fair?

Thanks for the info.

It was, indeed, a part of the lab, to an extent that may or may not be
measurable...

Seriously, don't ask me specifics.

Were they supposed to be out today?

Also, if those of us with pre-existing BLS are not entitled to the new
material, how do we go about getting the upgrade?

Re: [OSL | CCIE_Voice] Presence integration issue

2009-07-31 Thread chikki venu
hi,

i have done some cups labs.

here my readings on it

1. we can do without AD
2. we cannot do without DNS. Casue DNS = SIP = DNS. Since we are purly working
on sip stack i see we need this for presence to work properly

i have made a video on integration which i will be posting on my blog very soon.

my blog site called http://chikkis.blogspot.com/

i hope will be able to upload the video on fileshare site today itself. so stay
tuned:)

Hope this helps
Happy labbing

Yeah, I don't think we need to be stressed about this. I received the BLS
material last year (all the V2 stuff), and like clockwork have had access to
all the updated workbooks as they were released. There's no need to panic,
they'll deliver.

It's gonna be awesome!!!
