A touching story...

2008-01-25 Thread Adam Churvis
Got this today from an old firearms mentor of mine:

A hunter and his friend were sitting in a tall tower stand near Highway 481
in Maverick Co., TX early one cold December mid-morning. Suddenly, a huge
buck walked out over to the corn they had spread in the scrub. Moving
quickly, the hunter carefully aimed his 300 Win Mag at the unsuspecting
buck.

As he was about to squeeze the trigger on this deer of a lifetime, his
friend alerted him to a funeral procession passing slowly down State highway
481. The hunter pulled away from the gunstock, set the rifle down, took off
his hat, bowed his head, and then closed his eyes in prayer.

His friend was stunned. "Wow, that is the most thoughtful and touching thing
I have ever seen you do. You are indeed the kindest man I have ever known,
and I feel lucky to call you a friend."

The hunter sighed and shrugged, "Yeah, well, we were married for 35 years."

No, actually, it's very simple: goods and services sold to a consumer at the
retail level, period. (somebody correct me if I remember this incorrectly
from the book).

> And then the problem with a flat tax is that it disproportionately
> taxes lower income people and so you need exceptions for this and that
> and pretty soon you have 12 volumes of tax code again.

Absolutely not, and this is one of the biggest misunderstandings of the Fair
Tax. Each month, at the *beginning* of the month, everyone -- *EVERYONE* --
receives an automatic "prebate" of the entire tax burden on their family up
to the level of poverty. So if the definition of poverty for a family with
two children is X, then 1/12th of 23% of X is pre-paid to the head of
household for that family at the beginning of each month, regardless of
their financial situation. This completely eliminates 100% of all taxes on
everyone up to the poverty line. And banks are chomping at the bit to setup
debit card accounts that the government can automatically drop these funds
into.

> And if you look at who pays taxes it's mostly rich folk:

Under the Fair Tax, the rich will end up paying a substantially higher
portion of the country's taxes, because it's entirely a consumption-based
tax. And when you consider what will happen when offshore tax havens are
eliminated through the Fair Tax, it gets even better.

Really, you ought to read the book first. It's a quick yet engaging read,
and it will explain away all your worries through straightforward logic and
reasoning.

sadly, i think that if we were **required** to educate ourselves prior to
the caucuses/primaries, most people would find themselves drawn to a
"lesser" candidate, but the big Dem/Repub machines really dedicate
themselves to pushing through those that tout the party lines. Who really
sees themselves as a straight-up red/blue member?

As I understand it, a national sales tax would tax "new goods"
bringing up the question of how one defines "new". 12 volumes of tax
code could be replaced by 50 volumes of goods definitions.

And then the problem with a flat tax is that it disproportionately
taxes lower income people and so you need exceptions for this and that
and pretty soon you have 12 volumes of tax code again.

And if you look at who pays taxes it's mostly rich folk: If you
define "middle class" to include the three middle quintiles, from the
20th percentile to the 80th percentile, they would only be paying 31.8
percent of the tax burden despite earning 43.2 percent of the nation's
income, according to CBO.

E.g., Households making pre-tax $40,000 or less per year paid 5% of
all federal income tax in 2005 while filers making $225,000 or more
paid 70%!

Put another way, those making $40,000/yr pay 10% in federal taxes and
those making $250,000/yr pay 25%

While I hate taxes, I haven't heard of a more workable solution than
the one we have - but I sure do LOVE the flat tax.

Eight, huh?

Well, I can see that.

But still, blowing eight goats...

Reminds me of the time I interviewed Martin Brest, writer and director of
"Gigli":

AC: Martin, you have blown many goats during your career, have you not?

MB: Why yes I have, Adam. It all started in 1972 with my directorial debut,
"Hot Dogs For Gauguin," where I blew no fewer than seven goats.

AC: Wow, seven goats right out of the chute. That's impressive.

MB: Thanks. Then it was onto "Hot Tomorrows," where I took on one more goat
for my troubles.

AC: A total of eight for that movie?

MB: That's right.

AC: When did you first realize that you were destined for goat-blowing
greatness?

MB: Adam, I think that had to be Meet Joe Black, where I took a classic
supernatural storyline that anyone would normally enjoy, covered it with
cold molasses, and then stretched it out so long that not even a Chihuahua
on speed could have kept from falling asleep.

AC: And for that you blew...?

MB: Nine.

AC: Nine goats a-blowin'! Wow, that's an accomplishment.

MB: Not really.

AC: I feel you. So... Gigli. Talk to me.

MB: Not much to say. It was July, 2002. I had just finished praying to
Uhh-Duh, god of fucktards, where I had asked for a creative spark. Uhh-Duh
inspired me to write a story about a mentally handicapped person, Ben
Affleck, and Jennifer Lopez.

AC: A tard, a turd, and a tart?

MB: Precisely.

AC: And for that you polished the goatly knob how many times?

MB: Ten.

AC: You rang the bell, in other words.

MB: You know, funny story about that, Adam. You see, goats wear little
bells around their necks, so each time I lifted my--

AC: Thanks so much for joining us on VH-1 today, Martin. That's all we have

Re: CF-Community Presidential Poll

2008-01-25 Thread morgan l
In fairness, their calculator does show an increase in income. And nowhere
near enough to put me in favor of it. More like it's a wash. My own
quick-and-dirty math had it at somewhat less spendable income. The cynic in
me keeps saying that of course their calculator is going to show it's better
for me. I think the results posted on-list prove that it really benefits
people that already have disposable income, and would barely affect those of
lower income levels, like myself, who have little to no disposable income.

And really, unless I make 100K a year, a 1% increase in annual spending
money is negligible. I'd be insulted if my job offered me something like
that.
Damn, I just realised I managed to get on another hijack of one of Erika's
threads. -d'oh!

To the topic: I haven't a clue who'll win! I'm not sure I like any of their
platforms enough to even pull for one over the other. All those "political
match" quizzes put me at barely over 50% matching to any candidate, and none
of them agree which is a higher match, lol...I guess my political ideal
simply doesn't exist.

Yeah umm..but isn't this Fair Tax thing similar to what exists today
in the Cayman Islands?

The Caymans have no direct taxation of any kind on income or
corporations. They instead have indirect taxes on Imports etc.

"Caymanians and Caymanian companies are not subject to any form of
direct taxation. However, an import tax of between 5% and 20% is
levied on most imported goods. Import taxes on automobiles ranges from
27.5% to 40% for most vehicles while Hummers are taxed at 100% of

Re: CF-Community Presidential Poll

2008-01-25 Thread morgan l
Well, I could move to MS (just one example of a very low cost-of-living
area), where the cost of living is about 1/2 of where I live. I'd lose my
job, meaning I'd end up making minimum wage... way less than 1/2 of what I
make now. I'd be even worse off. Of course, I'd make low enough income to go
on welfare and foodstamps.

I already live in the lowest-cost region for 100's of miles. And the job I
have pays twice what I've ever made before, significantly more than what my
neighbors bring in, and significantly more than most employers would pay for
someone with my education background, despite my actual ability.

So yes, I choose to stay in my affordable, modest-sized single-family (as
long as the "family" has no kids) home, making middle-class income rather
than going on welfare. Because honestly, those are my only options.

How many Blown Goats do *you* give it?

(remember: zero Blown Goats is something great like Godfather, 10 Blown

Yeah, been there; read that. Sounds great, for people who spend < 60% of
their income--you only get taxed on 60% of your income. Those of us who
spend closer to 100%, or even more than that with credit, are screwed.
Ok,
so if they're spending more via credit, they're doing it to themselves.
But
for me, living paycheck to paycheck barely getting by, unable to save
any of
my monthly income, I'd actually pay significantly more in taxes that way
that the current system. Doesn't quite seem "fair" to me.

And I don't exactly choose to spend 100% of my monthly income, unless
choosing to buy groceries, live in a meager/affordable home, and drive
to
work (no public transportation available) so I can keep my paycheck
coming
in are choices. I'm not talking extravagant expenses like HDTVs or PS3s.

Dammit, I swore I'd stay out of these political discussions.

Re: CF-Community Presidential Poll

Had trouble finding the link, so here's the direct page:
http://www.fairtax.org/site/PageServer?pagename=calculator

I get +0.78% spendable income. Practically nothing. Certainly nothing to get
excited about.

Of course, the calculator is weighted with their "expert predictions", and
changing from 10% price drop to 0% price drop, had the opposite of the
expected effect; it actually raised my spendable income. And their
calculation of my mortgage was almost half of what it actually is.

there was supposed to be another (sarcastic) comment after the ellipsis.

US Demands immunity for contractors and protections from Iraqi Law.

2008-01-25 Thread Vivec
http://www.iht.com/articles/2008/01/25/africa/25military.php

"WASHINGTON: With its international mandate in Iraq set to expire in
11 months, the Bush administration will insist that the government in
Baghdad give the United States broad authority to conduct combat
operations and guarantee civilian contractors specific legal
protections from Iraqi law, according to administration and military
officials."

"However, the American quest for protections for civilian contractors
is expected to be particularly vexing, because in no other country are
contractors working with the American military granted protection from
local laws. Some American officials want contractors to have full
immunity from Iraqi law, while others envision less sweeping
protections. These officials said the negotiations with the Iraqis,
expected to begin next month, would also determine whether the
American authority to conduct combat operations in the future would be
unilateral, as it is now, or whether it would require consultation
with the Iraqis or even Iraqi approval."

LOL!
Why were they in Iraq again? Right right..it wasn't about WMD..right...
Oh and it wasn't about Oil and about having a firm Base of Operations
in the Middle East..right..it was...it was

Something about Democracy and Sovereignty for the Iraqi people wasn't it ?

Re: Upgrading to Vista Ultimate

2008-01-25 Thread Vivec
Next time you can backup with Acronis Backup software, make a complete
disk image. Then if things don't work out, you can just restore the
image.
This is what I did the first time I moved to Vista. I used it for
about two months then restored the XP image.
I thought that after a year things would have been a lot better, though.

But take heart, Vista Service pack 1 may be released by February 15th.

RE: CF-Community Presidential Poll

2008-01-25 Thread Adam Churvis
What I'd like to see is a complete elimination of all taxes except the Fair
Tax, and just increase the tax percentage on the Fair Tax until it funds the
equivalent of what it did before there was a Fair tax.

I mean, no more alcohol or tobacco taxes, no more specialized or "hidden"
taxes of any kind -- everything paid directly by an aware citizenry. And no
whining about "non-smokers shouldn't have to foot the bill for smokers" and
such. You could make those arguments about anything and everything until
the cows came home, and then argue that cows should be taxed differently
because they cause heart disease. None of this matters more than the
citizenry knowing exactly what kind of a bite the government takes out of
their ass every time they buy anything.

If that doesn't get out the torches and pitchforks, nothing will.

Ajax compined with popup information...

2008-01-25 Thread James Smith
I am struggling to find a method for the following...

I have a small thumbnail of an image on my page, when someone onmouseover()
I want an ajax call to retrieve a description and image location from the
server to be displayed in a pop up over the top of the page. This should
clearly be closed onmouseout().

I have been looking into jQuery and it's plugins but can't find anything
suitable. Any suggestions?

I am off home in 10 minutes so you have the entire weekend to come up with
something ;-)

Re: CF-Community Presidential Poll

Yeah, been there; read that. Sounds great, for people who spend < 60% of
their income--you only get taxed on 60% of your income. Those of us who
spend closer to 100%, or even more than that with credit, are screwed. Ok,
so if they're spending more via credit, they're doing it to themselves. But
for me, living paycheck to paycheck barely getting by, unable to save any of
my monthly income, I'd actually pay significantly more in taxes that way
that the current system. Doesn't quite seem "fair" to me.

And I don't exactly choose to spend 100% of my monthly income, unless
choosing to buy groceries, live in a meager/affordable home, and drive to
work (no public transportation available) so I can keep my paycheck coming
in are choices. I'm not talking extravagant expenses like HDTVs or PS3s.

Dammit, I swore I'd stay out of these political discussions.

They started out classically trained Flamenco guitarists, joined a
rock band in their late teens in Mexico City. Then, as they put it
"grew tired of warmth and sunshine" and moved to Ireland, where they
quickly ran out of money. They fell back on their classic training and
busked their way across Europe playing original flamenco tunes and
covers of rock songs, flamenco style.

Eventually they landed a recording contract and a huge fan following.

Good stuff(tm)!!

PS, I'm currently working on learning their version of Metallica's Orion.

around forever. La Guitarra Romantica by Morton Davis is good to.

RE: Last night weather...

2008-01-25 Thread Jacob
I love it. But my wife hates the cold. I thought about driving up to the
mountains tomorrow, but she wants to stay home and have the heater on. I
think I should break the furnace tonight... :P

Well up here in the high desert, we had rain/sleet in the lower
elevations (below 3500 ft) and lots of snow in the higher areas. Still
sleeting and snowing here where I live and work, and hwy 138 has been
completely shut down before hwy 2 into the mountains. This is winter and
I love it.

Not sure if you group Flamenco with Spanish guitar, but Charo is the
best guitarist, hands down, I have ever heard. She is a phenom.

(And yes, I was as surprised as can be when she played)
