Could use this group's advice on a new backup product
Need some advice. Like a lot of companies, we eventually needed something faster and more reliable than tape backup, so we went to an Iomega REV AutoLoader 1000, which used up to ten 35 MB (uncompressed) disk cartridges. Backup was a blazing 1 GB per minute, and the cartridges never needed retiring because they would never wear out, ever. The problem was the backup software, which still emulated tape. That means that the entire collection of files written to a cartridge was lumped together into a single huge file, and a separate set of files contained the indexes into this huge file to tell the backup software where to get the files for restoration. And then there was the backup media database to contend with. What we quickly found out was that every specific combination of primary storage hardware and software, backup storage hardware and software, and the backup software itself, is highly sensitive to the slightest change in the environment. So you may end up with lots of backup cartridges or tapes that cannot be restored without painstaking patches, etc, on a different machine (such as after the primary goes kaput). And when a primary device fails the last thing you need to be concerned with is hunting down backup software installation CDs, license keys, patches, and configuration notes. So we ended up retiring about $4,000 worth of NAS, REV autoloader, and backup software less than three years after we had purchased it, and moved to a file server using an internal RD1000 removable 300 GB data cartridge. It has the same 1 GB/min backup speed as the REV, and everything on the shared file server volume fits neatly on the one backup cartridge. We went ahead and purchased an additional external RD1000 drive to go into offsite storage for disaster recovery so we could rock-and-roll in case of a disaster. Now all we needed was backup software that didn't treat the backup medium as if it were tape. The whole idea was simple: backup all files directly to a removable disk that could be taken out of the file server and inserted into any other Windows computer with a USB port, and be back up and running immediately. No backup software needed to restore files -- no restoration, for that matter - just insert the cartridge and go. Problem was there was no product out there that would do this for us. As we went further and further into the problem, we understood why: there are a lot of details to something so seemingly simple as copying files. You can't just copy over the same destination media because erasures would remain and grow out of control, so you have to delete on the destination. But you can't just wipe it because it may contain other files, so you have to place an ID file on the destination volumes and check its content against a RegEx that validates the backup medium. And you have to log everything and gracefully exit on certain conditions and email the backup administrator, and on and on and on. And it had to do certain things: double-click on it, and it runs as a Windows Forms application with a GUI. Schedule it with a -nogui switch and it runs silently. Test things from the GUI before scheduling. Save your configuration, start and stop backups manually from the GUI, etc. So we built it ourselves. We call it Back That NAS Up! and we were thinking of selling it as a commercial product. It's really useful for us, so we thought others might find it useful, too. My question is, How do you think we should price this product? It would be priced by machine, but how much? It's very simple and very small, and you can be up and running in five minutes. But it makes a BIG difference in the strategy a company can use to greatly speed its disaster recovery times. Do any of you need something like this? I'll be happy to give out trial copies to see how people like it, and also give full commercial licenses to the first ten people who run it as a scheduled task for at least twenty days (we need to see how people use the product, and how they like it). Please contact me *OFFLIST* if you're interested in a copy, or if you have advice on pricing. Thanks in advance to everyone who gets involved. Oh! You know what? What about Virtual Hard Drives?? You start things off as a VHD. You back the entire VHD file up using standard File backup. To Restore you just stick any USB drive with the VHD on it and run that VHD. WHAMMO BLAMMO! Instant 'new' and restored machine. So an application could churn out Dated VHD files which would constitute full system backups of any point in time! And then from any machine you just fire up the free Windows Virtual PC 2007 and run the VHD. ~| Adobe® ColdFusion® 8 software 8 is the most important and dramatic release to date Get the Free Trial http://ad.doubleclick.net/clk;160198600;22374440;w Archive: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/CF-Community/message.cfm/messageid:255444 Subscription: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/CF-Community/subscribe.cfm Unsubscribe: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/unsubscribe.cfm?user=89.70.5

RE: For any .net (C#) users on the list
Hi James, There is nothing like CFDUMP built into .NET outside of the VS debugger. Unfortunately, I have also never seen one of these from a third party either and have pined for one more than once. Part of the problem is that whereas CF has a rather limited set of types, the types available in .NET are practically infinite, so it's a much more difficult task. That said, I have actually been kicking around an autodump idea in my head that would use reflection to figure out what's what and dump it out. I'm really not sure how ultimately useful it would be, however, since it's often just easier to use the VS debugger, and the gains of having an autodump are probably not exceeded by the time it would take to build it. You might want to look into using the Trace feature of ASP.NET. You can write strings out to the trace, and even though it's not going to tell you what *all* of your variables are, you can write out selected bits of information and see it at the end of the request. Oh well, its mostly for development reasons when (for example) I have written a query and just want to dump the results to screen quickly to make sure I am getting what I want. It is also handy if your dev server is working fine but you are getting odd results from the production server hosted hundreds of miles away, it is simpler to just cfdump some variables than to try to connect VS to the remote machine. RE: IMAP or not to IMAP ...
H. So many good things to say about IMAP eh? I do like IMAP ... I use Google Hosted almost exclusively for all email accounts. I need Outlook's features otherwise I'd continue to use the Google web version which I have been doing for the past year. But, the ability to have about a dozen plus other accounts within easy one click access, the preview pane, One Note access and the RSS feed reader made me convert back to Outlook... In fact, since switching back to Outlook last month, my inbox went from over 1000 emails down to a few hundred because I was getting a little too lost with organizing things. Don't have a concrete why it's easier for me to organize in Outlook, it just is. The thing I was noticing though, is that it's so slow to synchronize and check all the IMAP accounts. The pop's just come on in. Done, dusted. (yes, I leave pop emails on the server in case I need emails and don't have my laptop) But the IMAP's are taking forever. I've got 8 IMAP accounts. For my main RUWebby account, I've got over hundred filters/labels which yes, translated nicely into folders in Outlook, but to check them all takes Outlook a long time. So I guess I'm trying to figure out how to streamline this process better. I thought maybe POP would be quicker than IMAP, just leave everything on Google so I get the backup if I need it. The answer may seem simple to you guys, cut down on email. But I can't. I've already tried. These are either client accounts or all related to the business. In fact, I've got more to add ... :( But you all seem to have no issues with speed? Outlook has crashed a couple times on me as well ... ~| Adobe® ColdFusion® 8 software 8 is the most important and dramatic release to date Get the Free Trial http://ad.doubleclick.net/clk;160198600;22374440;w Archive: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/CF-Community/message.cfm/messageid:255456 Subscription: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/CF-Community/subscribe.cfm Unsubscribe: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/unsubscribe.cfm?user=11502.10531.5

They must have figured out a way to allow the auto e-mail signup since everyone with a snowboard.com account automatically gets an @snowboard.com email address. ~| Adobe® ColdFusion® 8 software 8 is the most important and dramatic release to date Get the Free Trial http://ad.doubleclick.net/clk;160198600;22374440;w Archive: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/CF-Community/message.cfm/messageid:255481 Subscription: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/CF-Community/subscribe.cfm Unsubscribe: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/unsubscribe.cfm?user=11502.10531.5

Re: The good stuff on Iraq
I was listening to Diane Rehms this morning and the topic was the true cost of the Iraq war. The point was brought up that 1) no other president in history has championed tax cuts during a war, they were almost exclusively the other way, 2) All of this war is being funded on credit whereas other wars have been funded in some part by taxes, 3) Unless you are a serviceman or related to a serviceman, you have in no way had to give up anything for this war. Seems to me that if the republicans really believed in this war and thought it was just and deserved, they wouldn't mind paying for it. I generally let Google filter my mail with the objective being all list mail goes into a label and skips the inbox. That way ultimately my inbox is pretty lightweight with only 100 or so messages in it at any given time (less if I'm being really good about answering emails). I may be wrong about this, but I think IMAP can be configured to only retrieve headers and only to retrieve folder messages once you've selected that folder. My syncing seems really quick and I know (on my Treo at least) the folder contents aren't on my device till I select the folder to view. -Cameron ~| Adobe® ColdFusion® 8 software 8 is the most important and dramatic release to date Get the Free Trial http://ad.doubleclick.net/clk;160198600;22374440;w Archive: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/CF-Community/message.cfm/messageid:255492 Subscription: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/CF-Community/subscribe.cfm Unsubscribe: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/unsubscribe.cfm?user=89.70.5

Poll: Repubs Like Obama, McCain
Republicans like Sen. Barack Obama nearly as much as they like their own likely presidential nominee, Sen. John McCain, according to a new Fox 5/The Washington Times/Rasmussen Reports poll. The survey determined that a quarter of self-identified Republicans rated Mr. McCain most likable, but nearly as many 23 percent chose Mr. Obama as most likable. And among all adults surveyed, Mr. Obama was rated likable by more people than Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton and Mr. McCain combined, underscoring the Illinois senator's appeal to voters across the political spectrum. There is something about Barack Obama that is hard to capture in polling and it's an enthusiasm, it's a freshness, it's an excitement he can generate that will certainly be a factor in the campaign, said pollster Scott Rasmussen. Mr. Obama said his message and his brand of campaigning will help him compete in states traditionally hostile to Democrats, and the poll numbers suggest an opening for that approach. By contrast, likability has never been Mr. McCain's strong suit even long-shot Republican candidate Mike Huckabee was rated more likable in the poll, both among all adults and Republicans specifically. Mr. McCain instead is betting on his national-security credentials, and there the survey shows him topping both Democrats combined. Mr. McCain led with 39 percent to Mr. Obama's 17 percent and Mrs. Clinton's 19 percent when those surveyed were asked who will be the toughest on matters of national security. Even among self-identified Democrats, Mr. McCain fared decently with one in five rating him toughest. Mr. McCain is well-aware of his advantage on that score, accusing Mr. Obama last week of misreading the terrorist threat in Iraq. I've been involved in every major national security challenge for the last 20 years, the Arizona senator said. Mr. Obama responded last week that Mr. McCain's experience didn't help him make the right judgment on the war by supporting the invasion in the first place. Mr. McCain will wrap up the Republican nomination if he sweeps primaries in Vermont, Rhode Island, Texas and Ohio today. Mrs. Clinton, meanwhile, trails Mr. Obama in delegates needed to win the Democratic nomination, and is looking for wins today to help her regain momentum. Mr. Rasmussen said part of the New York senator's strategy has been to try to poke holes in Mr. Obama's veneer, and that has paid off in the past few days by removing some of the shine. That's the sort of challenge that Barack Obama is going to face he's got to convert that intangible into something when the questions come, Mr. Rasmussen said. But Mr. Obama brings more than just likability. Despite facing candidates with far more experience in government, he was rated smartest by 26 percent of those polled, more so than Mrs. Clinton, who won 22 percent, and Mr. McCain, who garnered 17 percent. Mr. Huckabee, a former Arkansas governor, was fourth with 10 percent. Even among Democrats, Mr. Obama was rated smartest by nearly half a full 10 percentage points more than Mrs. Clinton. Mr. Obama also was wildly popular among independents and third-party members, 41 percent of whom rated him most likable. The poll of 1,000 adults was taken Feb. 26 and 27, and found independent candidate Ralph Nader trailed on every measure, coming in below Rep. Ron Paul, Texas Republican, on likability, toughness on national security and on smarts. A plurality of those polled said they thought Mr. Nader's new presidential bid will hurt Democrats most, with more than half of self-identified Democrats thinking he will hurt their chances this year. In 2000, many Democrats blamed Mr. Nader's independent bid for siphoning off votes from their candidate, Al Gore, helping then-Gov. George W. Bush win the White House. ~| Adobe® ColdFusion® 8 software 8 is the most important and dramatic release to date Get the Free Trial http://ad.doubleclick.net/clk;160198600;22374440;w Archive: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/CF-Community/message.cfm/messageid:255511 Subscription: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/CF-Community/subscribe.cfm Unsubscribe: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/unsubscribe.cfm?user=89.70.5

Re: The good stuff on Iraq
And whats the risk vs. reward? What do we lose in the long run if we were to pull out? Seriously consider the ramifications of an Iraq that is nothing more than a satellite state of Iran. One that operates training camps and exports terror freely. I think the real problem is that we didn't finish the job the first time in 91. Thats where all these problems today stem from. We allowed the majority population of Iraq to revolt, and didn't give them the promised aid, ruining our relationship and sewing descent. If we don't stay and get it stable now we will just have to keep going back as the years progress. Dana wrote: yeah -- there's a lot of volatility there though -- probably not a safe investment. Re: Slipped Disc
My father-in-law is a surgeon and is originally from India. He had to stop operating several years ago because a disc problem prevented him from having 100% use of his arm. US doctors recommended surgery, but he opted instead to go to India and have treatments done at an Ayurvedic clinic. The treatment was very successful. He didn't go back to surgery, but he regained use of his arm. I don't know much about Ayurveda, but it seems to have done the trick for him. We've brought more good to the world as a nation in the past 200 years than any other nation in history. Yet no matter what we do someone always has to complain about it. We're not perfect and I know that. I've ranted and railed against my government's policies; both foreign and domestic, time and again. We make mistakes, in the end though we mean well. It's fun to hate on America, even Americans love to take part in the sport. The thing I don't hear from your side of these issues are offers of solutions. What would if you were king for a day Gel? Granted, he's a frisky little guy for being so long in the tooth, but never really seemed like much of an issue. Anyway, my dog is a 5 year old standard poodle (yes, go ahead and laugh...) that I fought for and won in my divorce. I was pretty excited to bring the little dog over here cause then the big dog would have a buddy, and they've gotten along really quite well. The problem I'm experiencing is that they're getting along TOO well as of late. I don't really know how to put this other than to just come out with it - they take turns trying to [EMAIL PROTECTED] each other. ~| Adobe® ColdFusion® 8 software 8 is the most important and dramatic release to date Get the Free Trial http://ad.doubleclick.net/clk;160198600;22374440;w Archive: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/CF-Community/message.cfm/messageid:255533 Subscription: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/CF-Community/subscribe.cfm Unsubscribe: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/unsubscribe.cfm?user=11502.10531.5
