RE: Macromedia Ultradev

2000-06-18 Thread Shane Witbeck

I purchased Ultradev with the same hope in mind (that it would allow me to
stop switching between applications). That hope died. One thing that I was
most disappointed about was Ultradev's inability to connect with remote
databases for truely "live development". I must say it DOES do a good job of
allowing you to develop pages with a local database and see the changes to
the page as you design it. Other than that I see no real incentive to
upgrading to Ultradev.

PS. Im now switching between CFStudio and Ultradev for development :)

I just received a 'special' offer from Macromedia to purchase
Ultradev for £199.00 ex VAT. I currently use a combination of
Dreamweaver 3 and CF Studio 4.5 and am contemplating whether
 to go for this offer.

It appears that Ultradev effectively combines the above two.
Is this a good anology? Anybody used Ultradev and then reverted
back to Studio? Is the help as good?

Unless you don't mind using Notepad, you'll want to keep Studio around.
Ultradev, whether you like it a lot or not, is no replacement for a text
editor. Ultradev doesn't provide CF-specific help, either; the help is
focused on Ultradev specifically.

Re: cheating: Time Zone rules

2000-06-18 Thread Tom Nunamaker

Eric,

We have that data in a program called "Andromeda" by camp-sys. They might
be willing to sell you the data.

One other consideration is Europe switches daylight savings time 1 week off
from the states.
I don't know about other continents, but that's something you don't want to
forget. Our
flight schedulers for my USAF organization do everything in Universal time
(ZULU) and convert
it to local for the customers with the data from Camp-Sys. If you have
access to the Flight
Information Publications (FLIP), the IFR Supplement has time zone
information in it. It's an
unclassified publication. My guess is you can buy a copy of it from the
National Image and
Mapping Agency (NIMA).

Let me know if you still need help.

Tom

At 6/7/00 10:10 AM, you wrote:

This is going to be used to calculate local times for international airline

The CFMAIL to the list which handles subscriptions and such was just backing
up in the undelivered directory. I've moved it over and wrote a page to do
it automatically.

I made the mistake of unsubscribing when I took an extended Memorial Day
Weekend. It's taken me over 2 weeks and repeated attempts before I was
finally able to re-subscribe

Weird Prepend

2000-06-18 Thread [ W E B D i V A ]

All cfm pages on our server seem to get this:

!--!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN"

html
head
 titleUntitled/title
/head

body

/body
/html--

prepended at that top of each page. When you open the file it is not there,
but when you view source, it is. Therefore, any page that has a body color
of black gets overridden by the body that is prepended. Is it something
with Studio since that is the template page that comes up when you start
it??? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

RE: studio errors

2000-06-18 Thread Andrew Scott

It appears you are running this under windows NT or Windows 2000, I am
running CF Studio 4.5.1 and also bet tested it through its beta stages. I
have never seen this error in doing all the installations of the betas.
However, if its running under NT or Windows 2000 you will find that some
rouge software you have installed might actually be the problem.

I have used all the features you are having problems with, all with 100%
succes in the use of it.

This happens to me too. Allaire haven't shown the slightest interest in
helping me with it either, no matter how I report it.

Basically, I think they've created something and don't have a clue how to
make it work. It costs more than A$1000. I also bought a 2 year
subscription and after 3 months I haven't been able to make it produce a
single template. I'm still using the old version. For such an expensive
package, it doesnt do even the most basic things properly, and isn't up to
the standard of a year 1 programmer's effort.

THe only suggestion I've been able to squeeze out of their support is that
there's a bug in the deployment wizard and you have to make sure you
upload the entire project not the changed files.

Big deal. IT still won't install properly and it still gives those
exception errors.

I believe it fails the test under the Sale of Goods ACt that it be of
merchantable quality, and therefore I have an action against them in the
courts. If there's no sign of interest by Allaire or their distributor,
Firmware eDesign soon, I'm going to be taking them to court over it.

My advice is, don't touch Studio 4.5.1 with a barge pole unless you don't
mind never using for anything other than a text editor.

Pity, cos the demo (obviously a big fraud because it worked) looked pretty
good.

If I ever hear of a fix for my problems, I'll be sure to let you all know.

This happens repeatedly when I quit. It did not happen when I first
installed 4.5, but it seems suddenly frequent, and I'm not sure what

Also, occasionally when I save a file, the file is saved, but the file tab
still shows the file as unsaved, and I occasionally also get exception

Any ideas what would cause this? Should I reinstall? Originally I was
running 4.0, then I installed a 4.5 upgrade, and finally I installed the
4.5.1 upgrade. If I reinstall, do I need to follow these steps again, or
is the 4.5.1 upgrade a complete version?

RE: CFIF syntax debate (kind of...)

2000-06-18 Thread Jeff Beer

If the question is whether or not to scope your variables, the answer is:
always scope your variables.

Scoping does a couple of things. One, it improves codes readability
immensely. Imagine the following code in a 1500 line template:

cfelseif IsDefined('lPageID')

Someone who is unfamiliar with the code will have no idea where this is
supposed to be coming from. Isn't this easier:

cfelseif IsDefined('url.lPageID')

Now it's obvious that the code is looking for a URL variable.

Second, it removes a bit of overhead. If you don't scope a variable, CF has
to search through all of the variable scope types to figure out which one
this relates to. Obviously if you tell CF where to look, CF doesn't have to
work so hard.

[Note: I'm not completely sure if this is true. Any gurus out there? Does
CF still examine all scopes when identifying scopeX.variable? I'm thinking
about the differences in housekeeping between local and global vars more
than anything else here, EG, session.var vs. variables.var]

As to the example, I'd rewrite it as:

CFIF LEN(form.var)

Here you're doing a numeric calc, as opposed to a string comparison.
Numerics are much faster. IE; LEN(scopeX.somevar) will evaluate to either 0
(no content) or the length of the variable. If it's 0, CFIF evaluates to
false, otherwise it's true. Very quick, easier to type, and IMO, it's
easier to read.

Good luck!

Jeff

All cfm pages on our server seem to get this:

 !--!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN"

 html
 head
  titleUntitled/title

 body

 /body
 /html--

prepended at that top of each page. When you open the file it is not
there,
but when you view source, it is. Therefore, any page that has a body

of black gets overridden by the body that is prepended. Is it something
with Studio since that is the template page that comes up when you start
it??? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

 Thanks in advance!

Re: cheating: Time Zone rules

2000-06-18 Thread Mike Kear

But don't forget Eric, when you're working out time zones, that some
countries have a habit of chopping and changing the daylight saving dates.

In New South Wales for example, we're going to summer time in September
this year - weeks early - because of the American TV networks and the
Olympics. But it still doesn't mean there's going to be a single frame of
live Olympics coverage on US TV. To my amazement, it's been announced
that every last second of TV coverage in the USA is going to be delayed!!!
A great opportunity for those who like to bet on sports!!

Our states make up their own minds as to what dates they're going to
change. There are some poor beknighted individuals in towns near the
border of NSW and Victoria who can never predict when the changes are going
to be.

Sorry but it 'tain't my fault yer honour!

Second, it removes a bit of overhead. If you don't scope a variable, CF
has
to search through all of the variable scope types to figure out which one
this relates to. Obviously if you tell CF where to look, CF doesn't have
to
 work so hard.

Well thanks for that Andrew - it means that it IS POSSIBLE that at the end
of this saga that's now been going for more than 2 months, I might have a
Studio that works. it **IS** possible the thing is going to be usable.

It's running in Windows98 64MB and I've tried it in Windows95/48MB

But on the plus side, I'm pleased to report that after all this time
Allaire's support has finally woken up and offered a suggestion. Perhaps
I have two web servers running. (I don't). Not much progress, but it
**IS** progress.

Andrew thanks for your suggestion and for giving me the confidence to
continue. I was starting to think I'm better just to cut my losses, throw
a A$1000 program away and suggest my clients buy another program. I was
not looking forward to telling them they have to throw out that amount of
money.

Pity, cos the demo (obviously a big fraud because it worked) looked pretty
 good.

If I ever hear of a fix for my problems, I'll be sure to let you all know.

too much memory being taken up from the machine's normal resources.

2000-06-18 Thread Michael Kear

Yes, I have two development machines I'm trying to work with, and a
production server that's working CFServer4.0.1 just fine. I'm reluctant
to upgrade the server to 4.5.1 until I see it working in my development
first, to see if there are any conflicts with my existing templates.

The development machines are totally stand-alone. Our firewall doesnt
allow access to the server so they're not even networked to each other.
Just PCs connected in one case to a ISDN line and in the other case to a
modem. No other apps on the PCs, except what you'd normally expect to
find on a PC - Office, Dreamweaver3, Fireworks3, Ultra Edit, Linkbot,
CuteFTP, SQLServer7 (yes I know its inefficient on a PC but it's the only
way to reproduce the server on the development environment)

Backwards and forwards

2000-06-18 Thread Parker, Kevin

Not sure if this made it to the list last week with the list having some
dramas so her it is again - apologies if its already hit the mark with some

Can someone give little bit of advice here please?

We are going to release our Corporate Plan on those little CD cards this
year. On the CD will be a web version of our Corporate Plan. In it will be
links back to our web site. We think it would be pretty useful if we had an
idea how many times the cards were used to link to our web site.

There are 2 options. I can create a phantom version of each page that is
linked to from the CD card e.g. if the link is to index.html then we create
a duplicate of that page e.g. index_2.html and use that for the card link.
Then we can trawl our web stats and do a count of how many hits on
index_2.html. This is simple but there is a maintenance overhead as we have
about 10 to 15 links in the plan i.e. each time we regenerate the site we
have to create the phantom pages again. It also means we are locked into a
certain site structure of a while.

The CF option is to place a CF page between the CD and the target page that
increments or adds a value in a database and uses CFLOCATION to move them to
the target page (our main web site is not am CF server FYI). (This option
allows us to change site structure - when it does we simply change the
value of the url in CFLOCATION). The problem I've encountered with this one
is when the user hits the back button they will be directed back to the CF
page from whence they came and then encounter the CFLOCATION bit that loops
them to where they came from - not the desired result. H! I could put
some JavaScript in to manipulate history but the problem there is what
happens when they hit the back button when they come to the page from within
the web site itself, not via the card.

Any clues please?

there have got to be other factors at stake that are causing the problem you
describe above. since a cflocation is essentially a server-side redirect,
the page containing the cflocation would never even be entered into the
user's history therefore making it impossible to get to with the back
button.

what you're describing sounds more like a javascript redirect using
location.href or a meta refresh with a delay.

my suggestion . . . point the links to a template with a cflocation and call
it a day.

good luck,

why don't you just assign a variable to the link you are going to include on
your cd and then on your main home page use some conditional logic to test
to see if that variable exists, if it does then do an insert into your DB
then you can track who's coming from he cd. just my 2 cents :-)

doen't really have to worry about form and url scopes as they will always be

Re: REGEX validating email

2000-06-18 Thread Seth Petry-Johnson

Chris,

Way back in the beginning of April you posted the following regexp to the
CF-Talk as a regexp that can be used to check whether or not a string is a
properly formatted email address.

 Here's the code I use

 CFSET IsEmail =

REFind("^([[:alnum:]][-a-zA-Z0-9_%\.]*)?[[:alnum:]]@[[:alnum:]][-a-zA-Z0-9%\
 .]*.[[:alpha:]]{2,}$", email)

I liked your regexp so much more than my long, drawn out method so I cut and
pasted your code into my templates and went about my business. Well, I just
discovered that the above regexp has a flaw. My regexp skills aren't quite
as sharp as they should be, so I haven't had the best of luck figuring out
the problem on my own.

The problem I have is that this regexp returns true on a string containing
some alpha numeric characters, the "@", and then 4 more characters EXCLUDING
a period. For example, if I pass "seth@argo" to the regexp it returns true,
signifying that the string is in fact a valid email address. If there are
three or less characters after the "@" then it correctly returns false. The
logic of the regexp SEEMS correct to me, and I can't seem to figure out why
this is happening. I've double checked my code 4 times, and I have EXACTLY
what you posted to the list.

Could you please check and make sure that this is indeed the regexp that you
use (i.e. make sure there are no typos). If it is NOT could you be so kind
as to send me the correct one? If this IS what you are using then you might
want to check and see if your sites suffer from the same error.

Finally, one last and final question: the only character in your regexp
that I don't understand is the "$" at the very end. I can't find an
explanation of this meta character anywhere in Forta's section on regular
expressions. What exactly does this character do?

Regards,
Seth Petry-Johnson

Ok I know the issue for compatibility with AOL and ColdFusion always comes

.cfm pages, ColdFusion has been out longer than .asp and the site you list
all of this info on is even written in ColdFusion. Do you not have any say
in what gets cached. There is no where else for me to write to because the
page doesn't have an email address for the webmaster, so please excuse me
for anyone reading this. I am just frustrated to no end. I try to make an
awesome application and now it gets all screwed up because aol likes .asp
better. Anyone who has some input please respond.

Don't hold your breath on getting a response from AOL. Even when they used
to respond, the context of the response was essentially, "tough luck, it's
your problem."

To prevent AOL from caching your pages, place the following statements in
your application.cfm page:

CFSET gmt = gettimezoneinfo()
CFSET gmt = gmt.utcHourOffset
CFIF gmt EQ 0
CFSET gmt = ""
CFELSEIF gmt GT 0
CFSET gmt = "+" gmt

CFHEADER NAME="Pragma" VALUE="no-cache"
CFHEADER NAME="Cache-Control" VALUE="no-cache, must-revalidate"
CFHEADER NAME="Last-Modified" VALUE="#dateformat(now(), 'ddd, dd mmm

Re: Webmaster for webmaster.aol.com

2000-06-18 Thread Sean Renet

I know this is going to sound like I am Satan's helper, but think of who you
are dealing with Bob. You are trying to get results from a company that
instead of innovating and keeping thier browsers (both inherent aol and
netscape) updated, they decided to sue microsoft . The same attitude that
allowed IE to surpass netscape seems alive and well in alot of other areas
of AOL. Last year I started the process to buy the music realistate and
found them technologically sluggish. There have to be hundreds of asp, c,
java and perl developers working there that do not want to or do not have
the time to learn a new skill set.

CF may be old for us, but its new to them. They are going through massive
re-structuring and other app server communities like Broadvision et al want
their attention also. So, I doubt you are going to see much change from
them for some time to come.

AOL is a huge corporation and I have not seen innovation there since AIM.
Who knows, maybe the change to not caching cfm pages would take hunders of
man hours in assembly code on their double top secret proprietary servers.

I suppose when you add pioneers like Ted Turner and WEA's Roger Aames to the
mix, progression will eventually come.

On the bright side of things, China and North Korea look like PC, non-AOL
markets to me.
