I had posted this question, in a slightly more vague
way, a couple weeks
ago. Well, the theoretical happened and I was wondering if
anyone might have
a solution to head off such future occurrences.

It seems that a no-longer-here developer had written a
template where in
when conditions were met, a custom tag was called, and an
email was
generated. He had named his custom tag the same as the
calling template.
Well, the conditions were finally met, and in the end,
some poor woman got
 116,000 emails.

So, with an example this time, is there a straight
forward way of shutting
this loop down? Possibly a way of setting up a template to
do it? Someway
other than shutting the service down? We ended up having
to kill the service
to stop it. We initially tried making changes to the
template hoping to
force it to error out...but the system had cached all of
the pertinent
information and was on cruise control.

Re: How to stop an infinite CF loop?

2000-06-19 Thread vincy

hi,
I seemed to have had the same problem with CF where according to some
people say that
the code runs into an infinite loop. And that is not possible cause i
triple checked the code.
Only here the code apparently queries SQL over and over a period of time
the server crashes
because it runs out of memory !
If it receives more than 200 active connections at a time ... it goes
kaput !: )

I cant seem to isolate the problem to a specific page ...Atleast then I
would know where the
error is happening.

regards
vince

Re: Macromedia Ultradev

2000-06-19 Thread Sean Renet

Weird, I have no problem connecting to remote databases. Matter of fact
none of the databases I develop for are local. Are the datasources set up
right on your machine? And so far as the CF docs go, they come online with
Server also. That is of course if you have some how found a way to develop
CF without Ben Forta's books on your desk :-)

Only bug I have come across so far is CFOUTPUT inside a form field when
trying to view "live data", but I hear they are working on that.

I think what makes me so giddy about Ultradev is its stored procedure and
query functionality. Its a pain in the butt to keep looking at your stored
procs in Enterprise Manager to see what the output variables are called and
what values are returned when using CFSTUDIO.

Of course I really miss those exception errors CFSTUDIO 4.5 gives me when I
close it. Maybe Ultradev can be developed into a bigger RAM hog so it can
also throw similar errors.

Looking for a simple 'library management' CF application

2000-06-19 Thread Larry W. Virden

I would like to have a simple application which would allow a ''group'' of
people to list books they have, allow someone in the group to sign out the
book, allow someone to search the list, etc.

Anyone know of such a thing already available? The additional requirement
other than the above is that it has to be able to run on a Solaris CF server
(so no Win32 specific tags...)

No data in new record

2000-06-19 Thread John Allred

Hi,

I've been wrestling with an add/update template. Using CFINSERT, I can
get the autonumber field to increment, but the record is not added. I'm
using Access 97, and the table in question is a child in a 1-M
relationship. I don't have referential integrity applied, but I'm
wondering if the relationship between the tables might affect my ability
to insert new records. The join type is to include all parent records
and only those in the child that are equal.

Doing the same thing with another pair of tables works fine. But the
relationship for those is reversed.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

RE: SQL Server/CF Question

2000-06-19 Thread Philip Arnold - ASP

Ok here's the deal. I run a TON of Cold Fusion apps on our site,
 and running SQL Server 7.0.
I am still learning SQL Server but here is whats happening. Over
time the RAM usage for SQL Server goes up and up, and continues
to until I stop and restart the service then it drops back down.
Obviously there is some type of memory leak and I dont know where
to begin to trouble shoot. Meaning are there some settings on the
Datasources I should change to prevent this or is it something in
SQL Server I need to look at.
If anyone has experience with this please respond.

Actually, this isn't a memory leak - SQL Server takes all of the memory it
needs to cache the queries and handle it's pending jobs

You can restrict the amount of RAM that SQL Server will use, but ideally, it
should be on it's own machine with (a minimum of) 512Mb RAM.

If you want to stop limit the memory of SQL Server, right click on the
Server name (in Enterprise Manager) and choose Properties - then into the
Memory tab - you will then see the sliders for the amount of RAM you can set
SQL Server to use

If you're running your CF/SQL machine with less than 256Mb RAM, then
UPGRADE! SQL Server loves memory, and uses all it can...

Cookie trouble - need a little help with the recipie

2000-06-19 Thread Todd Ashworth

I have this on one page:
cfcookie name="MyCookie" value="#qryMyQuery.my_field#" expires="1"

I have this on the 2nd page:
cfset varMyVariable = "#Cookie.MyCookie#"

When I go to the 2nd page, I get:
Error resolving parameter COOKIE.MYCOOKIE

When I go to the first page, I have a call to a JavaScript function in the
body tag that submits a form to the 2nd page as soon as the page loads.
Could this be causing a problem with the cookie similar to the problem with
using cflocation?

foxpro deletes

2000-06-19 Thread John Featherstone

I would appreciate help in deleting records from a Foxpro table. When you
issue the 'delete' command via CF/odbc, this merely marks the record for
deletion. to actually delete the record, Foxpro requires the 'PACK' command.
If this is not done, CF will continue to display those records marked for
deletion. How do I permanently remove records from the table via CF/odbc?
Thanks in advance

RE: Webmaster for webmaster.aol.com

I don't know that AOL likes ASP better, my guess is that they just don't
have much of a clue. I've known many people, including one of my current
roommates, who work for AOL as 'developers' but, are all business/marketing
people by training and general mindset. I don't know where they hide the
techies but, I've never met anyone that worked for AOL that you could have
an indepth technical conversation with. Maybe I'm just bitter because they
always flood my local Starbucks when I'm trying to get my morning coffee :)

Ok I know the issue for compatibility with AOL and ColdFusion always comes
up and I have put as many things that have been recommended in there as I
can. Here is my question I wish to pose to the webmaster for the domain name
mentioned. Why does AOL not cache .asp pages and .cgi pages but will cache
.cfm pages, ColdFusion has been out longer than .asp and the site you list
all of this info on is even written in ColdFusion. Do you not have any say
in what gets cached. There is no where else for me to write to because the
page doesn't have an email address for the webmaster, so please excuse me
for anyone reading this. I am just frustrated to no end. I try to make an
awesome application and now it gets all screwed up because aol likes .asp
better. Anyone who has some input please respond.

Timeout requests
Set a value to limit the amount of time ColdFusion waits before terminating

2000-06-19 Thread Chris Evans

Restart unresponsive server tracks unresponsive threads, and will restart
the service if there are a certain number of unresponsive threads. If you
have this set to 5, you would need 5 infinite loops before this would kick
in.

Timeout requests would limit the damage from an infinite loop.

RE: Urgent! CF Server 4.5 Response is Very Slow

2000-06-19 Thread Eron Cohen

Monday, June 19th 10:27 am

Hi John,

I don't know if this will help you or not, but I have found a problem on one
of our older servers that causes drastic problems. If you let the system
drive/drive where Cold Fusion is installed fill up completely, you will, of
course, start to get Cold Fusion errors, plus massive speed reductions.
Fair enough. But, the real problem I found was that freeing up the disk
space and rebooting didn't solve the problem with speed. Cold Fusion
continued to drag, even though the machine's CPU and memory were barely
being touched.

What seemed to have fixed the problem was removing and re-doing the ODBC
mappings in the Cold Fusion administrator.

This was on a machine running IIS 4.0, CF 4.51 and SQL Server and MS Access
databases (and a small system harddrive :-) ).

Also, you don't mention what your Performance Monitor looks like. You may
want to set up your Windows NT Performance monitor with Cold Fusion and IIS
instances to see if you can tell what exactly is hanging up.

The DB is Oracle 8i.

OS: NT (SP:6a)

One server in particular is dogging. HTML responses are fast as usuall but

no avail.

Does anyone know of any issues that I may have missed with a configuration

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I think it's because your IMG SRC is pointing to an image that is on YOUR

Re: image in e-mail does not come out

The reason hte image doesn't appear is because you're src is "/my
documents/" and that path doesn't exist on the recipient's computer.
You need to put the image on the Web and link to it via absolute URL.

pThis Guest Pass is only good for #FirstName# #LastName#.

The problem is that the SRC attribute of your IMG tag won't resolve
properly:

img src="/My Documents/wh1 color1.jpg" ...

It should look something like this:

img
src="http://www.yourserver.com/thedirectorywhereyourimageis/yourimage.jpg"
...

Otherwise, the person who receives your mail message won't be able to
retrieve the image.

Re: image in e-mail does not come out

2000-06-19 Thread Spencer Saunders

Ashley

If you are sending email to a client then you would need to set the Image
path as an absolute path instead of a Relative like you have in your code.
My guess is that although you have specified where the image should come
from in your CFMAIL tag that all that's getting sent is the IMG SRC tag.
This means that the client's email browser is searching in
"C:\MyDocumnets...". Try setting the tag to an absolute URL where the image
is stored. Like so;

img src="http://www.theURL_where_the_image_can_be_found.jpeg"

Try that. Should do the trick.

I think that the problem is that the code in your IMG tag is being
executed on the client's machine, so your mapping to /My Documents is
invalid. You'll need to use a full http:// address to access a copy on your
own server. This, in general is a good thing, because you can track the
hits to your e-mail graphic to determine how many people are opening your
e-mail. Code it correctly, generating unique URL parameters, and you can
determine exactly who has opened your e-mail...kind of an auto-notify.

You need to specify the entire URL path to where the image is located. If

RE: newbie question - Linking an applet

I have a java applet that is a ticker. Can anyone suggest
how I would make the entire applet or just the text in the
 applet link to another page?

To do this, the Java applet itself has to provide the functionality you
want. You might look at its list of parameters; it may have one which allows
the applet to be used as a link. Otherwise, you're out of luck, unless
you're a Java programmer.

cfx tags w/ java are a pain

2000-06-19 Thread Larry Meadors

Am I missing something?

I'm writing my first java cfx tag for CF4.5, and to get an new version after I compile
it I have to restart the cf services.

I know there's a better way.

The docs talk about "modifying the coldfusion.cfx.class.reload setting of the
config/jvm.init file" but after looking high and low on the web server, I could find
no such animal. Thinking maybe it got moved into the registry, I searched for
coldfusion.cfx.class, but to no avail.

There's talk about a reload attribute too, but it's unclear whether that is for the
tag (i.e., cfx_test reload="always") or where it goes. I haven't yet tried putting
the class in the classes directory yet (I just saw that) and will try that (with

RE: CFIF syntax debate (kind of...)

2000-06-19 Thread Philip Arnold - ASP

what kind of scopes are there? Form, url, session... anything else?

not forgetting Application, Attributes, Caller (already mentioned), CGI,
Client, Cookie, Query Name, Request, Server, Variables

Scoping is always worth doing, as you can always set the specific variable
directly to it's scope - v3 and v3.1 couldn't set to forms, so it wasn't
always worth scoping, but with the latest versions, scoping is how you
should always refer to variables.

RE: MS Access 97 vs. 2000

2000-06-19 Thread Philip Arnold - ASP

I have a little development box with CF 4.0 and Access 97 that I use to
develop db apps. Now, my workstation has Access 2000. Of course, when I
make a db in 2000, then put it on the development box, CF can't link up to
it. What do I need (short of installing Access 2000 on the
 development box
which can't be done at this point) to make CF link up to the Access 2K
 database?

You need the latest MDAC, or Convert the databases to the earlier version.

RE: HOW TO: Retrieve Large Text from SQL Server

2000-06-19 Thread Philip Arnold - ASP

How can I retrieve the full data from a ~350K text field? I was
successfully able to insert the full article into the text field via
ColdFusion, but when I'm retrieving and displaying it I only get 20% or
less of it back. Is there some setting in ColdFusion I can modify to
return the full content of the field?

How are you connecting to the datasource?

ODBC has an annoying tendency of only allowing 64k onto one field - if you
can, go to OLE DB

RE: Cfcache Connection Failure error!

2000-06-19 Thread Dave Watts

Humm, the fact that the page works right without the cache
enable means that the HTTP request is working fine!

The fact that the page works right without CFCACHE means that the server is
able to respond to your browser. If CFHTTP fails, then that's a slightly
different issue; the server, for some reason, isn't able to respond to the
CFHTTP request. You can test this by using CFHTTP from another page to
request the problem page, and see what happens.

RE: Outputting to .doc or rtf files

2000-06-19 Thread Dave Watts

I'm presuming the list is back in action. Basically I've got
a question about outputting to a .doc or .rtf file a fairly
 straightforward report.

 I know I can use
 CFCONTENT TYPE="application/msword"
 CFHEADER NAME="content-disposition" VALUE="filename=File.DOC"

Like Eron mentioned, but what do I need to do with the actual
template file? Just insert my CF variables as if in a cfm template?

With RTF, which is made up of ASCII text, you can just insert the CFML tags,
functions, and expressions you want to use. Here's an example:

CFQUERY NAME="MyQuery" ...
...
/CFQUERY

CFHEADER NAME="Content-disposition" VALUE="inline; filename=payme.rtf"
CFCONTENT
TYPE="application/msword"{\rtf1\ansi\ansicpg1252\deff0\deflang1033{\fonttbl
{\f0\fswiss\fcharset0 Arial;}}
\viewkind4\uc1\pard\f0\fs20 Hi, CFOUTPUT#MyQuery.UserName#/CFOUTPUT!\par
\par
You now owe $CFOUTPUT#MyQuery.CurrentDebt#/CFOUTPUT. Please pay at once,
or we'll break your legs.\par
}

Note that the line directly preceding the RTF text is the CFCONTENT tag. For
more info about using RTF with CF, you can take a look at this:

RE: Integration with NT Domain Security

2000-06-19 Thread Dave Watts

How do I hook into NT domain security with cold fusion? Does
anyone have any information on how to do this?

It depends on what you mean by "hooking" into NT domain security.

If you want to reference NT usernames that your users are already passing to
IIS authentication requests, you can use CGI.AUTH_USER.

If you want to force authentication programmatically, you can use CF's
Advanced Security and the CFAUTHENTICATE tag.

If you want to manage NT users and groups, you can use one of the many
objects available for this. Lewis Sellers has a CFX to do this
(http://www.intrafoundation.com/); Software Artisans has a COM object to do
this (http://www.softwareartisans.com).

Is it possible to do the process via a stored procedure, or its
equivalent? That way you could just kick off the process and move on.

 Hello all,

Is there anyway to do an HTTP request in the background without
effecting the user's session. We are developing a 5-step process and a
request needs to be made in the third step that takes 1-2 minutes. We
don't want to have the client's browser getting a time out (from a proxy
server or otherwise) and want them to continue on with the process.
When the long process completes, it doesn't need to return anything to
the user, just update a database. Can I accomplish this using a CFHTTP
POST or will the process still hang until I get a response? I basically
need a way to make a request without the user's browser waiting for the
response. Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

CFHTTP dying:(

2000-06-19 Thread Eric Dawson

My CFHTTP connections are dying. A reboot fixes the problem, but once it
fails, it doesn't come back, and all cfhttp calls fail. :(

I am using the FinWin tags, and cfhttp throughout various pages on the
server. I am underpowered on the RAM side. Win2000 Server with CF4.51 Eval.
I am sure the problem is on my end.

I tried using CFX_Service to restart CF but it won't restart it. I think it
makes sense.

Also if anyone has any error checking tricks let me know.

Any insight is appreciated.

Thanks
Eric

Am I missing something?

I'm writing my first java cfx tag for CF4.5, and to get an new version after
I compile it I have to restart the cf services.

I know there's a better way.

The docs talk about "modifying the coldfusion.cfx.class.reload setting of
the config/jvm.init file" but after looking high and low on the web server,
I could find no such animal. Thinking maybe it got moved into the registry,
I searched for coldfusion.cfx.class, but to no avail.

There's talk about a reload attribute too, but it's unclear whether that is
for the tag (i.e., cfx_test reload="always") or where it goes. I haven't
yet tried putting the class in the classes directory yet (I just saw that)
and will try that (with reload="always" in the tag) next.

If I see anything helpful, I'll pass it along here.

If any one has any helpful hints, I'd sure appreciate them!

Larry

RE: Comment tag

2000-06-19 Thread Philip Arnold - ASP

I have a loop on a template, but is comented for developing purposes.
But I notice that until I remove the loop from the template, it henerates
*many* blank lines, and the size of the html increase signifficantly.
Can anyone tell me how to get rid of these blank lines, and if it is a
setting somewhere that generate this error?
I use CF server Studio 4.01

Try using CFSetting EnableCFOutputOnly="Yes" before the loop and
CFSetting EnableCFOutputOnly="Yes" after - it only sends bits that are
inside a CFOuput tag to the browser, which means that loops appear invisible
to the browser

CF4.5 naturally supresses this

How can one make CFHTTP work with SSL protected documents?

2000-06-19 Thread Gary Robertson

Hi Gang,

Upon first blush, it seems that CFHHTP does not speak SSL. The results
returned from a CFHTTP-loaded SLL document appear to be in a non-readable,
binary format. Can anyone shed light on this issue and perhaps offer a
solution?

Many thanks in advance,

modifying variable names in a loop

2000-06-19 Thread Chris Giminez

I have a form that may have just one or up to 20 or so sets of data. The
form fields will be passed, but could be blank for all but one set up data.
It's being passed as something like

form.name1
form.address1
form.city1
form.state1

form.name2
form.address2
form.city2
form.state2

... so on.

On the action page, I want to loop over an insert query and only execute the
query if the set of data is not ""

so I need to do a cfif name1 is not "" run the querycfelsedon't run
the query/cfif
How do I run the count in the cfif statement since name#loopcount# won't
work within a cfif statement?

Then if I do the insert, how can I get the value of the variable for the
query. It has to be dynamically generated from the loop
Obviously this is not going to work, but I think it illustrates what I am
trying to do.

 CFQUERY NAME="name" DATASOURCE="name"
INSERT INTO tablename
(
name,
city,
...

)

VALUES

(
#name#loopcount##,
#city#loopcount##,

)

Re: modifying variable names in a loop

2000-06-19 Thread Sharon DiOrio

Basically, you're to pass the action page either a number (to indicate the
number of loops) or a list to loop over (sometimes I use a list of IDs on a
multiple update page.)

On the action page:
cfloop from="1" to="#FORM.loopto#" index="i"
cfif Len(evaluate("FORM.name" i))
!--- execute query ---
/cfif
/cfloop

HTH!

Strange. Does anybody know a good ISAPI mailing list or a good book on this

Extracting dynamic query statement?

Does anyone know if there is a way to capture a dynamically generated
CFQUERY statement and store it in a variable? Basically, I'd like to make a
copy of a dynamically generated CFQUERY SQL statement (which I can see when
I have debug on)? I know I can construct first in a variable, but it'd be a
whole lot easier if I could grab it after the fact so that I don't have to
go back and rewrite all my query code.

Thanks,

Re: How to stop an infinite CF loop?

2000-06-19 Thread Michael Kear

I think that's a given. But I think what he was wanting to know is ...
once you discover an infinite loop is running, what can you do to stop it
other than restart the server?

Which seems like a sound thing to want to know. It would be pretty
obvious that if you don't discover an infinite loop while you're writing
the routine, the next most likely time to discover it is when it runs.
What then?

Subject: How to stop an infinite CF loop?

I had posted this question, in a slightly more vague
 way, a couple weeks
ago. Well, the theoretical happened and I was wondering if
 anyone might have
a solution to head off such future occurrences.

It seems that a no-longer-here developer had written a
 template where in
when conditions were met, a custom tag was called, and an
 email was
generated. He had named his custom tag the same as the
 calling template.
Well, the conditions were finally met, and in the end,
 some poor woman got
  116,000 emails.

So, with an example this time, is there a straight
 forward way of shutting
this loop down? Possibly a way of setting up a template to
 do it? Someway
other than shutting the service down? We ended up having
 to kill the service
to stop it. We initially tried making changes to the
 template hoping to
force it to error out...but the system had cached all of
 the pertinent
information and was on cruise control.

Authenticating on NT System

2000-06-19 Thread Dave Phillips

Hi all,

I am wondering if anyone knows of a way to authenticate a user on an NT
system WITHOUT making the pop-up authentication window appear.

I already have a login page for my users and want to retain that. Then,
when they login, I want to automatically authenticate them on the server.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Sincerely,

... my CF studio is showing me an error
"THE TAG NAME MATCHES NOT FOUND IN CURRENTLY ACTIVE VERSIONS."

Don't worry about that. When you enable Tag Validation in CF Studio, if you
use any tag that Studio doesn't recognize, you'll get that warning
notification. Studio doesn't know about many tags, such as those used within
the Verity query language (which aren't really tags at all, but use angle
brackets like tags) or custom tags that you write yourself.

need a non-greedy RegEx

2000-06-19 Thread Owens, Howard

I have a series of headlines on an HTML page. Some (but not all) of the
heads have subheads. I need to strip out the subheads for a list of
headlines page.

The RegEx I've tried (and I've tried several variations):

cfset newpath=REReplaceNoCase(newpath, "font size=2.*/fontb/p",
"br", "ALL")

This is too greedy. It grabs everything from the first subhead on the page
to the last (including all intervening headlines). I just haven't figured
out how to make this not so greedy ... get just the subheads off the page
and leave all of the headlines.

Suggestions?

H.

Blatantly simple

2000-06-19 Thread Parker, Kevin

I'm sure this is one of those blatantly simple problems where I'm
overlooking something simple but for the life of me I can't see the
CF_WOODS_FOR_THE TREES.

I'm trying to get a database to update from the execution of a link from a
page on our non-CF server that goes via our CF server using this template,
and then back to the non-CF sever. I've tried INSERT INTO and CFUPDATE and
the variation below but none of them update the database - the CFLOCATION
bit does execute OK. There are two other fields in the table, an AutoNumber
field and a DateTime field which has a default value of DATE()+TIME(). Can
this only be achieved coming from a POST?

CFSET PageName = "Work To Live"

!--- Update the database ---

cfinsert datasource="wc_general"
  tablename="CorpPlan"
  dbtype="ODBC"
  formfields="PageName"

!--- Now relocate the user to the correct page ---

CFLOCATION url="http://www.workcover.com/worktolive/worktolive.html"
addtoken="No"

Re: need a non-greedy RegEx

2000-06-19 Thread Jim McAtee

If the headline text doesn't contain any HTML, then you could probably
use:

"font size=2[^]*/fontb/p"

Replacing the .* with [^]* matches zero or more of any character _except_
for a , so that section only matches up to the start of the next tag.

CT login CF application login

2000-06-19 Thread frank wei

Hi, is there anyone can share the idea:

Is it possible we can use NT login info in CF application login and how it
is set? That means after the users login in NT they don't need to type in
any id and pw in CF application.

Thanks,

Frank Wei

RE: CFHTTP and connection failures

2000-06-19 Thread Leong Yew

Thanks, Dave. That was a very informative reply. I've analyzed the HTTP
headers generated by my browser when the form data is sent directly to the
script as well as the headers CF sends to the script when CFHTTP is called.
I tried "forwarding" the client's user agent variable over to the script but
that didn't work either. Is there anyway where we can override all the HTTP
headers generated by CF and replace that completely with the headers coming
from the client's browser? I suspect that using the CFHTTPPARAM type="cgi"
tag/attribute set only adds to the headers rather than replaces them.

Subject: RE: CFHTTP and connection failures

Does anyone know under what conditions the use of cfhttp
returns "connection failure" as the value of cfhttp.filecontent?

I tried submitting form data to a cgi script on a different
server with the following code, and all I kept getting was a
connection failure. When I get rid of the form data cfhttp
connects normally and returns the default page when the cgi
script is called without any form data being passed to it.
Unfortunately I don't have access to the cgi script so I
can't figure out what it does to the form data when it receives it.

 Here it is:

 cfhttp url="http://www.somedomain.com/cgi-bin/script.pl"
 method="post" resolveurl="yes"
 cfhttpparam type="FormField" name="login" value="#form.username#"
 cfhttpparam type="FormField" name="password" value="#form.password#"
 /cfhttp

 cfoutput#cfhttp.filecontent#/cfoutput

There are a lot of potential problems you might have with CFHTTP. There are
a couple of approaches you can use to diagnose them.

1. If you're posting to a page, you're typically mimicking an existing HTML
form. Make sure you do exactly what that form is doing, since that form
provides exactly what the action page is expecting to receive. This includes
passing CGI variables that the action page expects, or cookies, or whatever.
For example, it may be the case that the action page is looking for either
IE or Netscape, and if you don't identify your CFHTTP request as one of
those, no response is provided.

2. Monitor the traffic. Use a proxy to record what the form sends, and what
the response headers are. There are many ways to do this; there's a utility
at http://www.coolfusion.com/ called HTTP Analyzer which provides some of
this functionality, but I prefer to use a recording proxy, like the Perl
script you can find at http://www.compansr.demon.co.uk/.

Re: How to stop an infinite CF loop?

2000-06-19 Thread Seth Petry-Johnson

I think that's a given. But I think what he was wanting to know is ...
once you discover an infinite loop is running, what can you do to stop it
 other than restart the server?

Which seems like a sound thing to want to know. It would be pretty
obvious that if you don't discover an infinite loop while you're writing
the routine, the next most likely time to discover it is when it runs.
 What then?

That's not such a simple question. How is the CF server supposed to
differentiate between a finite loop and an infinite loop? Is 1000
iterations too many? 10,000? 100,000? I'm sure there are valid processes
that could loop that many times and still have a definite exit point.

The only way for CF to tell what loops are infinite would be to examine the
loop logic and decide if the exit state would ever be met. Considering that
this could be incredibly difficult (or impossible) for even marginally
complex loops I don't see how this could be efficiently included in the CF
engine.

The best solution is to hire programmers that don't write infinite loops
g.
